Elm Creek Park Reserve Photo: Three Rivers Park District
As the temperature drops, Minneapolis Northwest heats up with festivals, events and plenty of exhilarating winter activities. From skiing wintry trails to making ice sculptures and strolling the beautifully lit, snow-covered streets, here are ways to celebrate and rejoice in the Minnesota weather.
Winter Sports at Elm Creek Park Reserve
Bring your family and skis and get ready to travel downhill with glee, experience the thrill of tubing or wander the cross-country ski trails at Elm Creek Park Reserve. The park’s chalet offers ski rentals, concessions with hot cocoa and a fireplace for you to warm up after an exciting day outside. If you’re feeling adventurous, try fat tire biking and ride along the park’s 13 miles of snow-covered trails with ease. If you don’t own a fat tire bike, you can rent one from Maple Grove Cycling.
Fun at the Central Park Ice Skate Loop
Tired of going around in circles at the skating rink? Try the ice-skating trail at Maple Grove’s Central Park instead, and take in the picturesque park views from the meandering 800-foot loop. The ice loop is the first of its kind in Minnesota and is one of only a few in North America – it really is a sight to see and experience! Entry is free, and skates are available to rent. Maple Grove Polar Plunge

Each year, the Polar Plunge challenges thousands of brave jumpers at numerous locations around the state, including Fish Lake Regional Park in Maple Grove. It’s a great way for everyone—individuals, organizations and businesses— to get involved in supporting Special Olympics Minnesota. The polar plunge is the kind of fun and thrilling event that you really must experience to understand, but it is an entertaining event to watch too!
Saint Paul Winter Carnival
During the Saint Paul Winter Carnival, which takes place from late January into early February, Saint Paul’s Kellogg Park transforms into a winter wonderland, full of elaborate illuminated ice sculptures, created by local artists. Sit on the Royal Throne of Ice and bask in the merry ambience as live music fills the crisp winter air. As you stroll through the carnival, sip on a glass of wine from Cannon River Winery, or go for a Summit beer at the ice bar. At the Frozen Family Fun Night, you and the kids will have a blast exploring the ice carvings and ice skating at the Wells Fargo WinterSkate.

Looking for a unique dining experience or an exciting meal out? In Minneapolis Northwest, you’ll find a variety of exceptional and tasty restaurants – everything from authentic, international cuisines to twists on your favorite comfort foods.

Dining tip: Wear the plastic bib – you won’t be sorry!
Now is the time to sample the delicacies at Ten Sushi, where you’ll enjoy gorgeous, perfectly presented sushi, sashimi and entrees made with high-quality cuts of seafood. Guests are routinely impressed with the selection of signature rolls crafted by expert chefs who understand Japanese cuisine as an art form. 3 WHERE to get a
Whether you’re longing for a house-made craft cocktail, a stiff bourbon concoction or a glass of full-bodied Italian wine, here are the best places to get a good drink in Minneapolis Northwest.
Brick & Bourbon
As self-proclaimed “ambassadors of great bourbon and whiskey,” Brick & Bourbon’s experienced mixologists are ready to help you find your perfect cocktail. You can sip on a classic Old Fashioned with a smoky twist, or perhaps you’ll prefer one of its unique cocktails like the Lavender Mule – a mix of vodka, lavender syrup and ginger beer, or the Manhattan Moon – a refreshing blend of bourbon, red wine and simple syrup. We also recommend dabbling in Brick & Bourbon’s whiskey (and bacon!) flights. NOLA Bistro & Lounge is one of the most unique restaurants and bars in the area where all the drinks are made with fresh fruits, flowers, and exclusive house-made syrups and bitters. Fuel your creativity with the Pick Your Flower cocktail option. Choose from a base of rose, lavender or orange blossom; then add lime, lemon or orange juice and mix in your favorite liquor. If you prefer to try one of the house specialties, we suggest Monet’s Garden, a blend of light flavors that’s refreshing any time of year. Located inside RISE By Elevation hotel, Serrano’s Cocina serves Tex-Mex-American fare and awesome drinks, including $2 margaritas. Gamble on the Serrano Margarita with MinneapolisNorthwest.com
3 SPRING NOLA Bistro & Lounge
sliced serrano pepper muddled into the tequila for a hint of spice, or stay safe with the always-delicious mango, peach or raspberry margaritas. The restaurant and bar also creates original concoctions like Electric Lemonade, The Hockey Mom and the Lemon Drop Martini. Bonus tip: If you’re staying in the hotel, you’ll receive a free craft beer at check-in! In addition to delicious pastries and sweets, Patrick’s Bakery & Café is known for its full selection of French wines. Sip a chardonnay from Burgundy or a merlot from Bordeaux. Pair your glass with a chocolate croissant or opt for a more savory option, such as La Brie, a flatbread topped with brie, crème fraiche, bacon and onions. Stop by for happy hour, Monday through Friday, to save $2 on glasses of wine and enjoy $5 appetizers.
Sip on a glass (or two) of your favorite international wine at Pour Wine Bar & Bistro. Featuring wines from Italy, Argentina, Germany and France, this cozy bistro has a wine to please every palate. Try a wine flight and pair it with a charcuterie plate, rosemary fries or the in-house French onion soup. Pour’s craft cocktail menu is also impressive. If you’re looking for a craft beer, stop in one of Minneapolis Northwest’s breweries. Serving freshly made German-style beers, Blue Wolf Brewing – Brooklyn Park’s first brewery – features Wolf Cry, a lighter rye beer that’s perfect for craft beer novices thanks to its subtle hop flavor. OMNI Brewing Co. features hoppy beers that hit all the right notes, including seasonal brews with hints of coffee and chocolate. At PSYCHO SUZI’S MOTOR LOUNGE, you can take home
your festive tiki mug for just a few bucks!
You’ll love tasting the luck of the Irish at Claddagh Irish Pub, where strong drinks and a traditional Irish menu reign supreme and are served with a side of Irish hospitality. The Guinness Bloody Mary is a can’t-miss cocktail with its mix of vodka, tomato juice, Guinness and corned beef (yes, you read that right) topped with your favorite fixings. It’ll have your taste buds doing backflips! MinneapolisNorthwest.com
GOLF EVENTS MADE EASY with
S T E N DA H L at RUSH CREEK Psycho Suzi’s
Jenny Stendahl has spent her entire career working for one of Minnesota’s finest golf courses – Rush Creek Golf Club in Maple Grove. As Golf Operations Manager, she masterfully works with groups to host memorable events, from corporate outings to fundraisers. Get an insider’s look at the keys to making a golf event successful from the golf guru herself and also benefit from her top etiquette tips for beginning golfers.
Tips for Hosting a Successful Golf Event at Rush Creek Golf Club
Goals and Planning: While all opinions are valid, Jenny says ultimately there should be one or two key decision makers who keep things moving along and maintain clear communication. Establish goals ahead of time, so you can dive into the extra details that will make your event memorable. Signage: Bring your own signage to the course and do specialized branding, such as sticking branded decals on golf carts or branded pin flags on the course. You can also opt to have your logo on Rush Creek’s golf carts’ GPS system! Scramble Format: The most popular format for groups on the green is the Scramble format. Teams of four people select the best drive, the best second shot and so on, until the ball is in the cup. This format keeps the game moving and takes the pressure off first-time golfers. Get Creative: Host a trendy wine-and-paint MinneapolisNorthwest.com
3 SPRING night, have a bag-piper serenade golfers as they tee off, or add a little game, such as bean bag toss, to the start of each hole. Also consider incorporating contests, such as a longest drive contest or closest to the pin contest. Food Options: Rush Creek provides set menus to start with and groups can build from there. It can accommodate cocktail hours, buffets and sit-down meals. The taco bar and grilling/BBQ themes are very popular in the summer, along with fancy steak dinners for more formal events. Prizes: Winners love a prize. Whether you’re having a longest drive contest or want to reward the winning team, Jenny and her staff will assist you in picking out tee gifts, prizes or gift certificates. But What If It Rains? Jenny says rain often passes through without much delay and groups can continue playing within minutes. If it’s a longer shower, groups can head back to the club house for food and drinks for an hour or two before resuming play.
Jenny’s Golf Etiquette Advice for Beginners
Don’t be nervous: If you are, try to dissipate that feeling by asking the staff questions because staff love to help. It’s always fun introducing golf to someone who’s not familiar with it and giving them a memorable experience. No judgement: “Golfers don’t care how well other people golf; there’s really no judgement,” Jenny says. So, rest easy – golfers love the social aspect of the sport, being on the open green with friends, enjoying the sun and beverage carts. Practice round: Consider a practice session at Rush Creek’s Golf Academy. Friendly instructors can show you the
basics and get you started. Then you’ll have an extra level of comfort when you get on the course. Pace of play: Slow pace of play can back up the entire course, so no matter your skill level, you must keep moving along. “You don’t have to be good to keep up,” reminds Jenny. Proper attire: Look the part of a golfer and be aware of your attire. Good rules of thumb include no jeans, cutoffs or sweatpants, and no sandals; tennis shoes or golf shoes are a must.

Chalkfest at Arbor Lakes
S H AW N M C C A N N
Chalkf es t ’s A r t is t-in-Residence From humble Midwest roots, Shawn McCann has grown into an internationally known multi-media artist who creates various forms of street art, fine art, murals, illustrations and commercial art. As co-founder and Artist-in-Residence of Chalkfest at Arbor Lakes, Shawn reflects on his journey and looks ahead to Chalkfest 2019. It all started with his childhood in Wahpeton, North Dakota – a city known more for its manufacturing plants than its art galleries. “I always knew art was something I had to do,” Shawn says. His parents were supportive from the beginning, helping their son by gifting him Bob Ross painting kits, and his school teachers were equally encouraging. “I had some amazing teachers inspire my madness,” Shawn recalls. “Everyone encouraged me, telling me to keep pushing for it.” Shawn attended the Minneapolis College of Art and Design and was immediately surrounded by people with an enthusiasm for art that matched his own. “When I walked in the doors, I felt at home,” he says. He achieved an Illustration Degree and for a while worked part-time at the Minneapolis Institute of Art. Eventually, he realized that if he was going to be an artist, he needed to jump in with both feet. Street art and chalking weren’t areas Shawn had planned to venture into. In 2003, he got a call to recreate one of his landscape paintings on a sidewalk. Coincidently, the request Shawn was for the opening of The Shoppes at Arbor Lakes in Maple Grove. He enjoyed the new challenge and loved seeing the public’s reaction, since chalk art, especially at that time, wasn’t something most people saw often, if ever. It turned out to be quite fitting that Shawn went on to co-found and MinneapolisNorthwest.com
4 become Chalkfest at Arbor Lakes’ Artistin-Residence. Prior to its start in 2016, Shawn knew the Twin Cities would embrace Chalkfest because of its already rich and diverse arts community. “We rank right up with the rest of the country in terms of quality art, like New York, L.A. and Chicago,” he says, “and it’s a unique opportunity for the public to watch artists at work.” Shawn isn’t bothered that his chalk art never sticks around for long. “People appreciate it more if they know it will be gone,” he says. “People love it, remember it and move on.”
A new work of art that won’t wash away any time soon is the vibrant super herothemed mural spanning the expensive domed ceiling inside Minnesota’s Largest Candy Store in Jordan, Minn., just 35 minutes south of Minneapolis Northwest. Eleven internationally known artists, including Shawn, created the mural Minnesota’s with a Gotham City Largest Candy Store vibe, and you can even spot Spiderman hanging from the ceiling. The beautiful piece makes a stunning addition to the epic candy store. Shawn is deeply passionate about bringing the arts to kids and teens, and
encouraging budding artists to pursue their passion, just as he was encouraged in his youth. “I’ve worked in so many mediums and with so many elements, and there’s much more to art than ‘Do you draw or do you paint,’” Shawn explains. “Whether you’re illustrating a book or working on a 5,000-square foot mural, you’re still using a creative mindset.” Meet Shawn and other artists from around the world at Chalkfest at Arbor Lakes, June 8-9, 2019, as they create stunning and inspiring street art, including eyepopping 3D creations you have to see to believe. Come on Saturday and enjoy food and entertainment as you watch the artistic process begin, and you can even do some chalking yourself. Then come back on Sunday for more fun as you see the final products and meet the artists and learn the inspiration behind their chalk masterpieces.

Brick & Bourbon, the new can’t-miss restaurant and bar in Maple Grove, adds a unique touch to Minneapolis Northwest’s impressive dining scene. It exudes a cool, industrial-chic atmosphere with its cavernous ceiling, impressive wood-working details and bourbon barrels throughout. The space is brought together by the central bar, a communal area to congregate around with 30 draft beers poured via a custom-made tap. The ambiance and menu are expertly crafted by owners Adam Dreher, Gary Sivyer and Brandon Warner, and designed to blend classic and modern styles and flavors. Think of all your favorite comfort foods – juicy burgers, tasty sandwiches, gooey mac & cheese – and turn them upside down. That’s Brick & Bourbon. There are so many enticing choices that you’ll be planning your next trip before you’ve finished your first meal. Start with the Duck Bacon Wontons, Firecracker Shrimp or go full Minnesotan with the shareable Tater Tot Hot Dish. You’re guaranteed to be tempted by Brick & Bourbon’s outstanding burgers, sandwiches and sliders. The Caprese Chicken Sandwich tastes like a summer afternoon with its tender, smoked chicken, fresh tomatoes, mozzarella and balsamic drizzle. Sliders are served on thick and fluffy mini Belgian waffles, and the BLT sliders include a slice of fried green tomato and bacon jam aioli. You can also kick your favorite comfort food up a notch with the selection of artisan MinneapolisNorthwest.com
mac & cheeses. The St. Louis Rib Mac & Cheese’s mini mountain of always-tender rib meat is piled high on the pasta, and the Black & Bleu Mac & Cheese is made with a blend of bleu and gorgonzola cheeses, finished with tenderloin medallions and chipotle bread crumbs. Delicious entrees include BBQ Whiskey Pork Ribs, Roasted Short Rib Ravioli, Million Dollar Medallions and Macadamia Crusted Halibut with a cilantro pineapple relish. For the feast of all feasts, opt for The Bricklayer’s Usquebaugh & Feast (“Usquebaugh” means whiskey or “water of life” in Gaelic). Comprised of a 48-ounce top choice porterhouse with a bourbon and port wine sauce, rosemary scalloped sweet potatoes, red romaine Caesar salad and your choice of one of Brick & Bourbon’s hand-crafted cocktails, this meal will leave you satisfied for days!
When all is said, done and devoured, Brick & Bourbon hits the trifecta for dining out: excellent bar, incredible kitchen and top-notch service. You have every reason to visit this new eatery, whether it’s to enjoy happy hour, have lunch with coworkers or celebrate a special occasion. Brick & Bourbon also serves a hearty brunch menu on the weekends!
Aside from the notable food offerings, be sure to tackle the fantastic drink menu with libations reminiscent of a bygone era. Explore “Bourbon and Whiskey Fun” with all kinds of unique bourbon and whiskey-based cocktails. Enjoy added excitement when you order the Smoking Gun – a Maple Old Fashioned that comes covered by a glass lid and enveloped by a mysterious cloud of smoke. Also featured is an excellent selection of flights highlighting American bourbons, rye whiskey, Scotch whiskey, Japanese whiskey and Irish whiskey. Man In A Lady Dress is perhaps the most accurately named cocktail on the menu. Deep pink and garnished with a stunning slice of dragon fruit, this beverage looks deceptively sweet until you taste the crisp jalapeño kick in the tequila. For something that is indeed sweet, order the Magic Cricket, which tastes like a milkshake with vodka and Crème de Cacao Liqueur blended with mint ice cream. MinneapolisNorthwest.com
