Join us for a little experiment

We’ve heard your concerns about long lines and big rushes of people all coming in at one time when multiple buses arrive simultaneously, and we’re going to try something a little different in August. We’re rescheduling a few of our bus visitors and for four days only in August there will be no buses. We hope this will create a more relaxed, down-home kind of environment with shorter lines and a more even flow of traffic. Let us know what you think about this Jackson Rancheria Style™ experiment. These special bus-free days are

Thursday, August 6; Monday, August 10; Friday, August 21; and Wednesday, August 26.

Go ‘Around the World’ at Kennedy Mine Amphitheatre

Main Street Theatre Works’ 2009 summer season at the Kennedy Mine Amphitheatre in Jackson continues with the highflying adventure “Around the World in 80 Days” August 7 through September 5. The adventure begins with Phileas Fogg (Ron Adams) making a wager with members of the Reform Club, that he can travel around the world in 80 days. Joined by his manservant Passepartout (Benjamin Ismail), the two head off to the Suez, pursued by the inimitable Detective Fix (Scott Divine), who is convinced that Fogg is a bank robber. It’s a mad dash to India, where Fogg takes a few hours to rescue Princess Aouda (Julie Anchor) from a suttee fire, then they charge on to Hong Kong, Yokahama, America, and back to Jolly Old England. The question is “Does Fogg make it in time to collect on the wager?” Or “Does he miss the rendezvous with cash as Detective Fix serves his arrest warrant?” Don’t miss the exciting conclusion, and the wild ride involved, as five actors take on 32 different characters, with Michael R.J. Campbell playing half of the characters on his own, in this hilarious romp to beat the clock. Performances are Friday and Saturday, with gates opening at 6:30 p.m. and the show starting at 8 p.m. Come early with picnics, chairs, and jackets for cool summer nights. The Kennedy Mine Amphitheatre is located on North Main Street in Jackson, next to the Country Squire Motel. Meet Poker Dealer Michael Battaglia

Dealer Michael Battaglia has dealt just about every card game Jackson Rancheria offers and says his favorites are Poker, which he’s currently dealing, and Craps, which he calls “intense and crazy.” “All the games are great,” he adds, but with Poker you get to sit down. “I get to interact with different guests every day and get to know the regulars, know all about their families. There’s something wonderful each and every day.” He’s quick to point out that playing Poker here is nothing like what you see on TV. It’s much more relaxed and fun, and a great place for beginners to learn the game. Michael was born in Roseville and raised in the Sacramento area. After Florin High School he worked a variety of jobs, including assistant manager at a gas station, supervisor at a printer repair place, and at an Anchor Blue shop in a mall. During most of this time he was working two jobs while raising his younger brother. He even managed to get about a year of college in somehow, studying accounting at Cosumnes River College. His life settled down after he started

He got here too late and the fair was over, but he picked up an application at the front desk, filled it out, and turned it in to Human Resources. He was surprised three months later when he got a call asking if he was still interested in dealing Blackjack. After completing the Dealer School that was then offered here at the Casino, Michael began dealing and discovered a job he truly loves. He’s currently dealing Poker, but has dealt Craps and Roulette (when we used to offer them), Blackjack, Three and Four Card Poker, Pai Gow, and Mini-Baccarat. “It’s a great job,” he adds. “The thing I love about customer service is that people are so friendly, both the guests and co-workers, everyone. I get to interact with people all day, a real variety of people.” He’s proud that his brother, who he raised from age 12 to 21, graduated from high school, got married and has a kid. When not working Michael says he likes to listen to a variety of music and watch movies. And he likes to shop. “I know people think it’s a girl thing, but I like new things,” he notes. Michael is one of the many people who daily demonstrate Jackson Rancheria Style, making sure that we offer a comfortable and fun experience for all guests whether they are learning a new game or are regulars. If you sit down at Michael’s table, you know you’re going to have a great time.

Enjoy Ice Cream & Wine at Convergence Vineyards

Join Convergence Vineyards for a weekend of cool August fun. Ice Cream and wine, they said it couldn’t be done. They did it last year and it was such a hit, people asked for more, so they had to commit. Seriously folks, if you have not paired ice cream with wine before, it is a real treat. Don’t miss it. No charge for this event on August 8 and 9 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Convergence Vineyards is among the first stops on the Amador County wine route, conveniently located on Highway 124, two miles off Highway 16, in Plymouth. Named for a location where three creeks (Amador, Rancheria, and Dry), converge, the winery offers unforgettable views, a great spot for picnicking, and fine wines. Some people drop everything, move to Amador County and open a winery. They risk it all in order to make their winemaking dreams come true. But Stephen and Jamie Concannon followed a more common route now days. To achieve their dream they both worked full time jobs for seven years, while commuting from the Napa Valley to Amador County every weekend. It was a passion for which they were more than willing to give up every hour of their free time. “The area reminded us of what Napa Valley was like 30 years ago,” according to Stephen. “We came upon the most beautiful stretch of land. It was 105 acres of rolling hilltops, sun slopped fields and three creeks all racing to the same destination. It was a convergence of sun, land and water. Within two hours not only had we decide to purchase the property, we also knew where we would build our home, construct a winery, and where the first vineyards blocks would be planted. Everything was falling into place, but there was a lot of work to be done”. Stephen is the winemaker, tends the AUGUST 2009 • THE ARROW

The winery is named for a location where three creeks (Amador, Rancheria, and Dry), converge vineyards, and works the tasting room with his wife Jamie. Jamie has become the winery chef and TV persona, often seen on local programming pairing gourmet food with premium Amador wines. In 2004, they had their first crush as a bonded winery. 2006 saw the first crop from their estate vineyards. They expect to grow the winery production to around 2,000 cases annually, which they sell only in the tasting room and through their web site. They now offer nine wines - Sauvignon Blanc, Viognier, Barbera, Mourvedre, Zinfandel, Syrah, ZinRah, Petite Sirah, and a Gnarly Vine Zinfandel Port. The wines are outstanding, but production is small and some varieties will be sold out during parts of the year. Many medals and awards have been won including Gold, and Best of State at the California State Fair. An educational vineyard is also planted on the property, with different varietals in four different trellising systems alongside the tasting room. In addition to being a topic of conversation and a learning tool for guests, this will also allow them to see which varietals grow well in their unique environment. Stop by to taste their wines and learn about the solar project, the barn owls nesting in the vineyard, and sustainable farming practices. The tasting room is open Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information call 209-2453600 or visit convergencevineyards.com.
