Students will learn about landscape design and implementation of landscaping practices. Students will complete a 20 hour outside of class individual project as a portion of their grade for this class.

Course Description:

This course is designed to be an introduction to agribusiness management in the free enterprise system with an emphasis on management of production agriculture. Instruction includes a study of basic management concepts, government policy, economic principles, budgeting, accounting, finance, risk management, and factors of production and marketing. Projects will involve discussion of current agricultural topics and developing a marketing plan for your own business.

KCC:Precision Farming Systems

Grade Level: 11-12 Credits: .5 Length: 1 semester Considerations: This is a concurrent Kirkwood Community College. This is a challenging, college level course. This course is offered every other year and will be available during the 2021-2022 school year. This class is a good sequence with Plant Science.

Course Description:

This course is intended to serve students who are interested in learning about GPS/GIS (Global Positioning Systems/Geographic Information Systems). This course provides students with an introduction to the components, capabilities, and functionalities of GPS/GIS through lectures and use of ArcView software. Grade Level: 9-12 Credits: .5 Length: 1 semester Course Description: Trends in education for the future demand computer literacy. This class will teach students the basics of Microsoft Office. Included will be units in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. While this introductory "hands on " course is open to all students, it should seriously be considered by students their freshmen year.

Grade Level: 9-12 Credits: .5 Length: 1 semester Course Description: This introductory course is intended to outline the fundamental principles of the business environment. For students considering a future in any business field, this course is the place to start. Although it is not a prerequisite for other courses in the business department, this course will lay a foundation for other business courses. Topics covered include starting a business, economics, government role in the business world, insurance, financial considerations of owning/operating a business, and management functions in a business. We utilize a simulation curriculum that will give students the opportunity to run a business and make all decisions from hiring/firing employees, ordering inventory, having shipments of orders out on time, etc…

Business Law

Grade Level: 9 -12 Credits: .5 Length: 1 semester Course Description: Business Law is designed to give students an overview of legal matters adults may encounter throughout a lifetime. (i.e. buying a house, creating a will, contractual agreements/obligations, crimes/tort law, real estate law) There is also an emphasis on legal issues specific to the business world such as intellectual property, contract law, the legal process, and employment law. Guest speakers will bring in their expertise on various topics. A field trip to the county courthouse to observe a case takes place as well. Students will have the opportunity to do hands on projects and see how they would have decided a case if they were sitting on the judge ’ s bench.

Financial Literacy

Grade Level: 11 Credits: .5 Length: 1 semester Considerations: This is a required course for graduation. Course Description: Using the Take Charge Today curriculum, this course is designed to provide students with the information and skills they will need to assist them in achieving financial responsibility. The curriculum themes recognize the ongoing bond between individuals, communities and families. The themes, woven throughout the entire curriculum, are: 1.You are responsible for yourself. 2. Your present self impacts your future self. 3. You are better off in a community than by yourself. 4. Investing helps you cope with risk and uncertainty. Lesson plans are grouped into a series of units with topics that build upon one another to build financial capability and well-being. Units include: 1. Take Charge of Your Financial WellBeing 2. Managing Your Money 3. Earning 4. Receiving 5. Saving and Investing 6. Spending (includes borrowing and protecting) 7. Distribution of Wealth

Accounting

Grade Level: 9-12 Credits: .5 Length: 1 semester Considerations: This is an alternative year course offered2021-2022. Course Description: Fundamental to understanding the structure and operation of business is accounting. This class

provides the background for a variety of career objectives. While it offers beginning vocational preparation for a career in accounting, it also provides a foundation for further study at the college level. In addition, it prepares students for related business fields in which a mastery of some accounting knowledge and skill is needed.

Sports and Entertainment Marketing

Grade Level: 9-12 Credits: .5 Length: 1 semester Course Description: Sports and entertainment are important parts of our modern economy. Fans and companies spend billions of dollars each year on sports while entertainment represents one of the largest exports from the U.S. to the rest of the world. This course is designed to explore the marketing principles and processes used in the sports and entertainment industries. The sports segment will include collegiate, professional, and amateur sports, and various marketing and advertising strategies used. The segment will also focus on public image, community causes, and the marketing and endorsement of products. The entertainment segment will focus on the marketing of movies, theater, and music. Entertainment profits, awards and annual events, and promotion of entertainment will be explored. Careers in both sports and entertainment marketing areas will also be explored.

KCC: Fundamentals of Web Programming

Grade Level: 9-12 Credits: .5 Length: 1 semester Considerations: This is a Kirkwood Community College Concurrent Course. Students will receive 3 hours of college credit for this course. Course Description: Presents hypertext markup language, HTML and cascading style sheets for encoding Web pages. Introduces Server Side and simple JavaScript for enhancing them. Emphasizes a structured approach to page layout, coding and styling, exposing students to a variety of software tools.

*Innovation in Business

Grade Level: 9 -12 Credits: .5 Length: 1 semester Considerations: At the conclusion of this class, students have the option to take an exam to show proficiency and earn college credit. Course Description: Do you have the desire to be your own boss, or someday run a business? This course will explore the foundations and process of starting and running an organization or business. Discover how focusing your passion, knowledge, motivation, ideas, and skills can develop into an entrepreneurial opportunity. You will learn how to take an idea and develop it into a successful organization. Areas of focus in this course will include: innovation/creativity, recognizing opportunity, business planning, market research, advertising, entrepreneurial finance, business operations, business analysis/evaluation, and networking. Knowledge in problem solving, innovative thinking, and the topics previously mentioned will provide you with the basis for success in the worlds of business and entrepreneurship.
