Course Description:

Students in this course will participate in two pathways of learning. The majority of the time, students will have the opportunity to pair up with another high school student in the building who has been identified as a target student or in need of positive social skill modeling. Students will attend class with their target peer and partner up with them to participate in the learning alongside the target peer. Their responsibility will be to show up on time, model appropriate social interaction, and essentially be a good friend! As part of this experience, students will have consistent coaching from an adult to support their interactions with the target peer. This coaching will happen with the course instructor during seminar or another time that works for both student and teacher. This time will allow students to ask questions, problem solve and understand how to work with peers with special needs. The second pathway of learning will be primarily focused on learning more about specific disabilities. The first semester will be autism specific. Students will be asked to watch videos, read articles and participate in online activities to better understand individuals with special needs. There will be a short journaling requirement.

Our goal is to find students who are ready to step outside of their comfort zone and try something new! This will be a fun class to gain a new friend as well as learn more about differences in our school!
