courses offered by the Mid-Prairie High School, credit-bearing courses offered that lead to an educational degree, courses in the discipline areas of mathematics, science, social sciences, and humanities. The Mid-Prairie Community School District will pay eligible claims for reimbursement to the post secondary institution in which Mid-Prairie students have successfully completed the enrolled course(s). Costs that may be claimed by a post secondary institution shall be limited to the lesser of the actual and customary costs of tuition, textbooks and materials, and fees directly related to the course taken by the eligible student or two hundred fifty dollars ($250). The parent or guardian shall furnish transportation to and from the post-secondary institution for the pupil. COURSE EXEMPTIONS PHYSICAL EDUCATION: All physically able students shall be required to participate in physical education. Phys. Ed. will be counted as part of your grade point average. Students may be excused from physical education under the following circumstances: a) Physically unable to participate due to illness or injury. This may require a doctor's written excuse. b) Due to a conflict with the student’s religious beliefs. A student’s parent or guardian must file a written statement with the school principal if the course conflicts with the student’s religious beliefs. c) If there is a direct conflict between P.E. and another academic class a conference will need to be held. This will be between the student, parent, teacher, counselor and principal before opting out will be allowed. HEALTH: Parents who object to health education instruction in human growth and development may file a written request with the principal for that the student to be excused from the instruction. PARENT EDUCATION & LIFE MANAGEMENT Parents who object to the unit of instruction in human growth and development may file a written request with the principal for the student to be excused from this unit of instruction within the class. Students are not permitted to be exempt from enrollment in the entire Parenting & Life Management course, which is a graduation requirement. As per state law, parents may request and see all curriculum materials used in the Parenting & Life Management class.
GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS The Mid-Prairie School Board passed the following set of graduation requirements, which took effect beginning with the Class of 2009. The school board and the high school staff are committed to enhancing both the rigor and relevance in more effectively preparing our students for their future. The high school graduation policy allows students to select the most relevant option based on their post secondary interest. All three options begin with State of Iowa Dept. of Education requirement of 4 units of English, 3 units of Science, Math and Social Studies. In addition, the school board enhanced our graduation options to address both the quantity of core classes required as well as the quality of relevant courses required.
