Biology
Grade Level: 9 Credits: 1 Length: 2 semesters Considerations: Students will need a 3-ring binder for this course. Course Description: Biology is the study of life. Students will be introduced to the basic principles of living things. Topics to be covered include information and concepts related to the structure and processes of molecules and organisms, ecology and the interactions of ecosystems, heredity and variation, and biological evolution. Students will practice using lab equipment, design and conduct experiments, collect data, and write laboratory reports.
Anatomy and Physiology
Grade Level: 10-12 Credits: .5 Length: 1 semester Prerequisite: Biology Course Description: This course is designed for students who have an interest in the human body. Students will study the structure and function of major body systems. Much memorization is required.
Advanced Biology
NOT OFFERED 2020-2021 Grade Level: 11 -12 Credits: .5 Length: 1 semester Prerequisite: Biology and Chemistry is recommended Considerations: An AP Biology review book is strongly recommended. Course Description: This is a rigorous labbased course designed to prepare students for college level science classes. Topics to be covered included biochemistry, the cell, photosynthesis, and cellular respiration. Good study skills and a strong work ethic are required.
AP Biology
Grade Level: 11 -12 Credits: 1 Length: 2 Semesters Prerequisite: Biology and Advanced Biology Considerations: An AP Biology review book is strongly recommended. Course Description: This is an extremely rigorous lab based course designed to prepare students for college level science classes. The AP biology curriculum covers; • Cell communication and cell cycle • Heredity • Gene Expression and regulation • Natural selection • Ecology Students are strongly encouraged to take the AP Biology examination upon completion of the course. Good study skills and a strong work ethic are required.
Physical Science
Grade Level: 11 -12 Credits: 1 Length: 2 semesters Considerations: This course is recommended for juniors/seniors to help prepare them for Chemistry and/or Physics or to fulfill the third science requirement. Course description: During the second semester students will explore physical principles such as energy, machines, work, sound, light, and electricity. The first semester is designed to explore chemical principles such as atoms, chemical formulas, writing & balancing chemical equations, and examining chemical
reactions. Both semesters include multiple laboratories and projects.
Chemistry
Grade level: 11 -12 Credits: 1 Length: 2 semesters Considerations: Complete Geometry prior to taking. It is recommended that if you received a “C” or below in Algebra, you take physical science first. You will need a calculator and 3 ring binder. Course description: This is a rigorous, labbased course. Concepts covered include the nature of matter and energy as well as many concepts related to understanding and describing chemical reactions. Mathematical skills needed to succeed in the course are part of the advanced algebra curriculum.
Advanced Placement Chemistry
Grade level: 11 -12 Credits: 1 Length: 2 semester Prerequisites: Chemistry Considerations: Completion of advanced algebra recommended. You will need a calculator and 3 ring binder. Course description: This is a rigorous course designed to mimic one year of college chemistry. Students are expected to take the AP Chemistry examination upon completion of the course. Students will be required to synthesize multiple concepts in order to solve complex problems. Good study skills and a strong work ethic are required. ____________________________________
Physics
Grade Level: 11 -12 Credits: 1 Length: 2 semesters Prerequisite: Advanced Algebra and Geometry recommended Considerations: This course is recommended for students pursuing a degree after high school. Course description: This course explores physics concepts that deal with forces, motion, waves, acoustics, electricity, and magnetism. Focus is strongly placed on engineering, designing, and mathematical applications for these various concepts as they relate to physics in everyday life.
Earth/Env. Science & Natural Forces
Grade Level: 10 Credits: 1 Length: 2 semesters Course description: This course focuses on the study of the Earth, the environment, and it’s natural forces. Students will be introduced to topics such as the Universe, Earth’s history, plate tectonics, various forces of nature, weather, climate, and current world environmental issues. Concepts are introduced through hands-on labs and activities placed throughout the course. ____________________________________
