LOCAL ACTRESS APPEARS ON IMBEWU: THE SEED Picture of Mbalenhle Cele

If you were glued to your screens watching Imbewu last Friday like millions of South Africans were, you would’ve seen a group of church women in Shongololo’s home who came to fetch “Sebenzile” (played by Busisiwe Shezi) for a church conference. One of those women was none other than our local actress Mbalenhle Cele from Umgababa.

“Working on Imbewu has been the greatest feeling ever. To know that someone believes in your craft, makes it better.

You will be seeing more of Mbali Nkomo on your screens.

Watch this space. I just can’t tell you more about her role on Imbewu though. You just need to watch”, Mbalenhle told Mphakathi.Org. She shared her grit and determination to make it within the acting industry and the massive obstacle she had to overcome to make it to her first call time on Imbewu.

“The day before my call on Imbewu, I burnt myself when –

I slipped on the floor while carrying a big pot of boiling water.

The water fell on my arm, face and breast and I was rushed to hospital. The following day I had to be on set at 06:00 AM. Since I’m new in the industry, I told myself that I won’t miss work.

After returning home at 1:30 AM from hospital, I woke up early for my call time at Imbewu. I went to work and explained what happened but they didn’t understand why I had to come in that condition. My reasoning was that it’s not a huge scene, I wanted to respect my craft and make a name for myself in this industry about being dedicated to my work. Plus I’m still new and I can’t be missing work but the pain I was in!”

Her previous work on-screen includes the likes of the SABC 1 show called Him, Her and the Guys playing Zondile; Mzansi Magics’ Isithunzi season 1 and 2, playing the role of Gash the “Ninja” alongside Emmy nominee Thuso Mbedu; and has done adverts for Grandpa, Lunch Bar, ABSA gold card and DSTV. In life we have choices and choosing a friend is a critical one. To be a friend doesn’t happen automatically, even though you click with someone or grew up together, you still have a choice. Like the English idiom goes, “show me your friends and I’ll show you your future.” It is upon every individual to make a choice about their friends because at a later stage it might come with regrets. This means anything that happens in our lives (good or bad), we can’t solely blame a friend nor provide full credit to them. The blame or credit still remains with the person who chose to mingle with the circle of friends. Some say as social beings we all need friends, people we interact with, share ideas and grow together to become better people.

Others say you can live without friends and still achieve great things. While others say, “I don’t have friends but I have people I know and obviously they justify their stance. You choose what works for you. However, it is imperative to protect and guide your space by having boundaries in defence of your character and reputation. In essence, never allow anyone to corrupt who you are or wish to be. Your friends are you and you are them. In isiZulu we say, “Izinyoni zohlobo zindiza ndawonye.”

The purpose of having a friend should be clear and what you share should be on the basis of positivity, coupled with similar visions and objectives in life.

ANGELS WITHIN THE COMMUNITY

If you notice a group of children in Ilfracombe carrying loaves of bread and plastic containers or you are surprised by your child or grandchild returning home with these items, don’t worry, the Albany/ BB truck did not break down. It is – the good-hearted work of Zanele Tozanani Khumalo, better known to the children as “Aunt Omuhle”.

Aunt Omuhle feeds numerous local children through “Abaholi Bakusasa”, a NonProfit Organisation founded by herself when the national lockdown began. From her home or vehicle, she gives bread and soup to children to take back home.

“I saw kids staying at home, others becoming homeless and parents losing their jobs when the lockdown started. Some children left their homes every morning to play with friends until sundown. When I asked myself why children did this, the answer I came up with was, “there is no lunch at home. That’s why some children are not at home the whole day and only return for supper”. That’s when I started my work and had the desire to provide them with bread, soup, and chips”, she told Mphakathi.Org. She said for now she only supplies children in Ilfracombe, either once a week or every 2 weeks depending on whether she is financially able because of her unemployment and lack of support.

“For the longest time I wanted to do this work because I grew up in poverty while staying with my grandmother and on some days we didn’t have food, not even bread. I thank my school teacher – uMaam Nkumbesi, who touched my heart because after school, I would go to her house to leave her books and she would give me enough bread to take home to my grandmother”, she added.

Sisi Jabu whose 10 year old daughter is a regular recipient of the bread and soup said, “Children at home eat a lot, so the bread we receive from Aunt Omuhle is very helpful. When my daughter first came home with the loaves, I didn’t believe that someone would simply give kids loaves of bread, I thought she stole it. I remember one day I had no money for bread but luckily my daughter came home with bread from Aunt Omuhle and saved me. What she –

is doing for us, our children and the community is noble and I thank her for it.”

NOT ALL POLICE ARE BAD While members of the Umkomaas SAPS were engaging with the public on Gender Based Violence in Imfume, KZN, a wheelchair bound elderly and frail woman approached the gathering needing help with an affidavit. She needed it to apply for a replacement identity document after losing her original. It was important that she had a replacement ID because the day for the old age pension was fast approaching and she would be unable to receive her pension without it. Since they did not bring their affidavit sheets, the SAPS were unable to immediately help her but promised to return the next day.

The elderly woman also shared with the officers the poor living condition of her home and her need for something to eat because she was hungry and did not have food at home.

On the turn of events, before the awareness ended, the SAPS, CPF, Woman’s Forum and Induna each contributed money and bought a few groceries for her and delivered them to her home.

After following up with the SAPS on their promise, Officer Nenela confirmed that they indeed returned and helped draft the affidavit for the elderly woman.

Draft your Will for Free during “National Wills Week” This year with Covid-19 in our midst, death has unusually become a reality for everyone. If it’s not a loved one, it’s someone you know. There has never been a time that forces one to think about death and makes having a will a priority.

Many South Africans die without leaving a will and as a result leave terrible consequences for their families and dependents. To limit this, the Law Society of South Africa runs National Wills Week, were attorneys offer their services to draft a basic will for free for members of the public. It normally takes place in September but due to Covid-19, this year it takes place from 26- 30 October.

What is a will?

2. Your partner may be left with nothing if you are not married.

Simply put, a will is a document in which a person sets out what must happen to their assets or estate when they die. It also sets out the care of any minor children and nominates a person(s) known as an “executor” who administers the estate on their death.

3. Your children’s inheritance could pass to the governments Guardians Fund or appointed guardian instead of a trust that will ensure your wishes for them are fulfilled.

Why must you have a will?

By making a will, you ensure that your assets are distributed according to your wishes after your death.

The consequences of not having a will are that; 1. You lose the opportunity to decide who inherits what and your assets are distributed in terms of the law known as “intestate succession”. This means people who you may not have wanted to benefit from your estate end up inheriting your assets.

4. Family disputes often occur when family members argue over the distribution of your estate if your final wishes are not clearly stated in a will.

5. Winding up of your estate can take years without a will appointing a professional Executor.

SANTACO Cancels Road Safety Awareness in Magabheni Last Friday was meant to be a day filled with activity, loads of prizes and road safety awareness for taxi owners, taxi drivers and the public when SANTACO held its annual road safety campaign in Magabheni; but due to bad weather and before the programme could begin, it was cancelled. Taxi owners, drivers, insurance companies, the SAPS and members of Hlokomela had turned out in their numbers but the rain persisted.

Mr Joe Mkhize, who is the Ningizim 1 Region Secretary and Thuthukani Mathuli Taxi Association said that since October is Road Safety

Awareness month, SANTACO KZN holds this campaign annually in different places within KZN as a way of raising awareness about the importance of road safety.

“Unfortunately, because of the rain, it was decided that the event should be cancelled as it would have been difficult to continue with our entertainment filled programme; which had dance and exercise sessions.

The awareness will continue in other places. In fact, for the rest of the month we’ll be in Durban, Pinetown, kwaDukuza, Empangeni, Hluhluwe, Gingindlovu, Vryheid, Newcastle, Msinga, and Piet Retief,” he went on to say.

GBV Awareness Continued In Imfume and Mahlongwa Pictures of the awareness in Mahlongwa and Imfume

Wednesday all roads led to Imfume, kwaMnganga ezitolo. The day was buzzing with activity when members of the SAPS, Women’s Forum, Community Policing Forum and a social worker where engaging with the public.

They spoke to people who were stationary, passing by and, people in their cars about GBV and human trafficking and handed out information pamphlets.

Nonkululeko Blose who was waiting for a taxi said it was great that the SAPS did the awareness because woman and child abuse is on the rise. “I didn’t know that they were coming today but I am happy they did because I’m scared that something might happen to me or my family like I have seen on TV. I even take extra care of my child and watch her when she goes to the shop because you can’t trust anyone these days.”

In support of the campaign, iNduna ubaba Musa Hlengwa of Imfume came and shared his thoughts about the initiative but also raised his concerns. “I am happy about the initiative but more emphasis is placed on women. Men are also being verbally, emotionally and physically abused but are scared to report it for fear of embarrassment. They fear being laughed at by SAPS members when they go to open a case so they choose to hide and suffer in silent.”

He commented on the short notice to the public and suggested that churches and schools be included in future advertisement. And in addition, he asked for more police visibility and suggested the opening of a SAPS satellite office with a social worker to serve the community.

A week before that, the awareness was in Mahlongwa kwaSibiya. Mahlongwa Local ward councillor Mbali Cele was among the SAPS entourage who engaged with –

people in their places of business and those passing by, to educated them on GBV and handed out pamphlets. She was adamant in letting the public know that both men and women are victims of GBV and encouraged all victims to be brave enough to report it.

Sibusiso Majola who manages a car tyre shop in Mahlongwa said he was happy with the initiative but knew that people would not come because they fear the police and he wished the public would’ve been given more notice of the event. He further went on to share his desire for the police to have a small satellite office within Mahlongwa to ease the burden on people having to be forced to travel to Umkomaas to certify documents, make affidavits and to report crime.

HUSTLER OF THE WEEK This week’s hustler is 27 year old Ntethelelo Phiwayo, known to locals as “Gaddafi”. He runs a car repair service from his home on Msebeni Road, Ilfracombe. His services include engine and gear overall, motor vehicle service and wiring. Anything car related, he is your man.

“I learnt this work from my older brother when I was young and I would help him when he repaired cars from our yard at home. From there, my love for cars grew. I do this work because I enjoy it and it comes naturally to me,” he shared.

He started his business in Ilfracombe in 2018 after he left his job as a vehicle mechanic and says he has received overwhelming support from within the community and clients from afar.

HUSTLER OF THE WEEK CONTINUED… “When you are an entrepreneur in my line of work, it’s not without its share of challenges, like being solely responsible for a client’s car when it’s left in your possession; clients hold you responsible for anything wrong with their cars even if the faults are unrelated to the work you did; and some people choose the cheaper repairs against your advice because they don’t want to pay more and after some time, the vehicle is back needing the same repairs,” he commented.

He noted that his toughest challenges have been not having a workshop, which forces him to travel to clients and also since his business is unregistered, it limits his work and his client base, for example struggling to get work from companies. But he said that the challenges have not stopped him from doing the work he loves.

“My future plan is to eventually be registered and have my own workshop,” he shared.

To young people who want to be entrepreneurs in his line of work he said, “Working on your own is a challenge, you need to be able to handle finances and have customer care but of importance you need to love cars and understand what you love about them. Know that fixing cars is a messy job. It’s not something you can do if you are not prepared to get your hands dirty.”

Last Saturday was a big day for AC Milano when an under 15 tournament was hosted in Roseneath sports field. Four teams participated and they were Ilfracombes’ AC Milano; Mahlongwas’ Black Stars FC; Roseneaths’ Citizens; and Amandawe FC from Amandawe. AC Milano won all three matches to claim the cash prize of R800 after winning 2-1 against Blackstar; 5-1 against Citizens; and in the final, 1-0 against Amandawe. The player of the tournament was Nkanyiso Ngwane from AC Milano who scored a total of 5 goals.

Young Sazi Mthethwa who coached the winning team related his excitement about coming out top in the tournament. “I am happy about the team’s performance. They showed they needed this tournament by their dedication. But it all started from training. Our theme is “team work makes the dream work”. So I thank the technical team for being supportive in grooming these young boys to participate in the sport. I’m looking forward to achieving more.”
