Annual Report

Cristo Rey New York High School is a Catholic, co-ed, college-prep school, part of the national Cristo Rey Network.

We serve students of all faiths who have the potential and motivation to achieve success and who do not have the educational background or financial means to attend another private, college-prep school.

Guided by the spirit of care for the individual, cura personalis, we challenge all our students with a rigorous academic curriculum and a demanding work-internship program.

Our ultimate goal is that our students will graduate from college and become professionals for others, transforming the world for the good of their families and society.

Dear Friends of Cristo Rey New York High School:

The 2023–2024 school year was Cristo Rey New York’s twentieth serving the students of our city. As we commemorate two decades of transformative education, we reflect on a journey that began with a courageous vision that has built Cristo Rey into a beacon of hope, opportunity, and remarkable human potential. Twenty years ago, our founders embarked on a bold mission—to create a school where students from underserved communities could imagine and actively construct their futures. Today, we revel in the strong and supportive community Cristo Rey has established in East Harlem.

The story of Cristo Rey New York is a testament to the power of profound love for our brothers and sisters, an unshakable commitment to our students’ inherent dignity and potential, and the certain belief that opportunities to learn and work lead to extraordinary accomplishments. The graduates in the Class of

2024 exhibited remarkable resilience as they began high school learning remotely during the pandemic, then adjusted and readjusted to various models of in-person instruction as their time at Cristo Rey progressed. As they matriculate at some of the country’s finest colleges and universities, our graduates possess the confidence to thrive in our sometimes-chaotic world.

Cristo Rey New York’s journey to this milestone would have been impossible without our extraordinary community of support. To our dedicated trustees and endorsing congregations, who provided visionary leadership; to our workstudy partners, who opened professional doors; to our generous benefactors, who transformed financial constraints into opportunities; to our advisory committee members who gave selflessly of their time; to our remarkable faculty and staff, who pour their hearts into every interaction; and to our students and their families, who bring courage and determination to our shared mission—we offer our deepest gratitude.

As we celebrate twenty years, we are not merely looking back but looking forward with renewed

passion. The world needs what Cristo Rey offers: an excellent Catholic educational experience that honors individual potential, that understands success is collective, and that believes we can transform the world for the better.

We invite you to continue being part of this extraordinary journey. Your support—whether through mentorship, work study partnership, financial contribution, volunteerism, or simply spreading our story—helps us nurture the next generation of leaders, innovators, and community builders.

The next chapter of Cristo Rey New York awaits, and we will write it together.

With gratitude,

John Rogan,

For two decades, Cristo Rey New York High School has stood as a testament to the transformative power of education.

This 20th anniversary marks a significant milestone in our journey. A milestone that invites reflection on the courage to pursue new horizons, the collective strength of our community, and our pride in reaching ambitious aspirations. These qualities have defined our school from the start and continue to drive our mission forward; inspiring the next generations to triumph when challenged.

This is the story of a community that continues to roar with courage, strength and pride.

HEAR US ROAR: 20 Years of Courage, Strength and Pride

Like a lion drawing courage from its lineage, Cristo Rey is grounded in a history of service and leadership.

In December 1980, four missionary women were martyred in El Salvador while answering St. Oscar Romero’s call for aid during a human rights crisis. Our founders took inspiration from the service and sacrifice provided by these missionaries, and with courage, guided the founding of a school with a vision—one that has endured since Cristo Rey’s inception. The church women’s courageous legacy reminds us that true strength lies in selfless service and unwavering commitment to justice, values that continue to shape our students and staff today.

With each step into the unknown, Cristo Rey students demonstrate strength as they conquer whatever lies ahead—whether in the classroom, the workplace, or beyond.

Cristo Rey New York students don’t just navigate the typical high school journey; they take on more. Not only are they held to the high standards of a college preparatory school, but they also work one day a week as part of our Corporate Work Study Program. The professional world is often like a dense wilderness, filled with unfamiliar rules and expectations. Strengthened in mind and heart by their Cristo Rey education, our Lions don’t just survive in these environments—they thrive.

Our community proudly stands as a testament to what can be achieved when we work together toward a common vision.

Cristo Rey’s journey is a collective one, with each achievement reflecting the dedication, collaboration, and love that define our pride of Lions. The parents entrust us with their children’s futures, the faculty give tirelessly to guide them, donors provide essential resources, and corporate partners open doors to new worlds of possibility. Supported by the community, our students stride forward, embodying Cristo Rey’s commitment to resilience, integrity, and purpose. Together, we forge a path where every step forward is a shared victory.

Class of 2024

Since 2004 at Cristo Rey New York High School:

1,389 Students Graduated.

1,375 Graduates Attended College.

Cristo Rey alumni are more likely to acquire a bachelor’s degree within six years of finishing high school than even their most affluent peers.1

Michelle Gonzalez

Class of 2008, CRNYHS

Class of 2012, Santa Clara University

Cristo Rey taught me that success is making a lasting impact, both in my career and in the world around me.

Attending Cristo Rey is a life-changing experience.

Academics and the Corporate Work Study Program were fundamental aspects of her time at Cristo Rey, but Michelle Gonzalez (inaugural Class of 2008) also believes that Cristo Rey’s formative culture played a crucial role in her development. “Cristo Rey allowed me to discover my own resilience while finding opportunities in places I never expected.” Navigating this new terrain required Michelle to face challenges head-on, to harness her grit, and to be self-disciplined in order to reach her goals.

In her early days as a second year student, it was a struggle to balance school, family responsibilities, and the Corporate Work Study Program. The weight of these demands often felt overwhelming, but the Cristo Rey environment, with its unique blend of rigor and care, didn’t allow for giving up. She was provided with the tools she needed and learned how to persevere. Today, she works at White & Case LLP, as a Legal Project Manager.

Cristo Rey’s emphasis on service and social justice was also a defining aspect of her experience. “We were constantly reminded that success isn’t just personal—it’s about lifting others around you.” This commitment to service has carried over into her adult life, guiding her to mentor others, engage in community work, and advocate for equity in the workplace. To Michelle, it’s about using her gifts to create a more just and compassionate world.

Reflecting on her time at Cristo Rey, Michelle sees herself as part of a legacy of resilience and heart. She maintains those values in everything she does.

“Being a Cristo Rey Lion means being part of a community that doesn’t just aim for individual success, but collective progress. It’s a reminder that we are all connected through the school’s mission of access and service.”

At graduation with Fr. Parkes in 2008.

ROARING INTO OPPORTUNITY:

The Power of the Corporate Work Study Program

Work Study Program (CWSP). Over the past 20 years, CWSP has not only supported the financial model of our school but also ignited the professional futures of our students. Every day, these young men and women take the bold step of entering the professional world, bringing with them the courage to ask questions and seek mentorship, the strength to learn and grow in unfamiliar spaces, and the pride of representing their school and community.

Our students work in a range of industries, from healthcare to finance, where they develop professional skills that go beyond the classroom.

Through CWSP, they gain the confidence to step into boardrooms and hospitals, knowing that their contributions are valued. In a changing world, CWSP fosters adaptability and resilience.

The transition to a hybrid workforce over the past few years pushed us to rethink traditional placements. By creating innovative roles and expanding partnerships with nonprofits, we ensured that our students’ roar continued to echo in workplaces across the city. Nonetheless, Cristo Rey is in need of more CWSP sponsors and partners.

Brendan Faughnan

Assistant Principal, CRNYHS

(Began as an English Teacher in 2006)

Cristo Rey has allowed me to empower and be empowered by a powerful and caring community .

We are all growing together, and that is the beauty of Cristo Rey.

For Brendan Faughnan, the journey at Cristo Rey New York has been a transformative one. Starting as a young teacher during Cristo Rey’s foundational years, Brendan found himself part of a close-knit, passionate team, all united by a single purpose: to offer students life-changing opportunities. As he moved up to Assistant Principal, Brendan has witnessed firsthand the evolution of Cristo Rey.

In those early days, everything felt like “all hands on deck,” Brendan recalls, a spirit that fostered deep camaraderie among the staff. Over the years, he’s seen Cristo Rey expand in countless ways, refining academics and growing support systems for students, but that strong sense of purpose has remained constant— “It has always been about the students, about being there for them.”

Brendan’s time in the classroom offered him some of his most profound moments. He vividly remembers an assignment when a student, tasked with advocating for a marginalized group, chose to speak about her brother with autism. Her vulnerability and advocacy moved Brendan deeply, reminding him of the importance of creating a space where students feel empowered to share their full selves. “You realize how powerful these young people are, how much strength they have—lions in their own right.”

After nearly two decades at Cristo Rey, Brendan’s connection to the school’s mission has only deepened. His background is in Jesuit education, so Cristo Rey’s call to be “professionals for others,” resonates with him personally. He not only strives to instill this sensibility in his students but also to live up to this value in his own life.

In the classroom in the 2009–2010 school year.

Cristo Rey New York’s 20th anniversary was a time of celebration and reflection. School and Board leadership spent considerable time identifying what will be necessary to maintain and build upon Cristo Rey’s outstanding track record. And, most importantly, evaluating what our students will need to continue to be successful.

In early 2025, we will proudly launch Building Bright Futures: The Campaign for Cristo Rey’s Next 20 Years which will invest critical resources in our facilities, our signature Corporate Work Study Program, and technology. We look forward to sharing more information in the coming weeks and months, and we hope the Cristo Rey community will offer their enthusiastic support for this effort.

CONGRATULATIONS CLASS OF 2024!

Beginning with their freshman year on Zoom, this remarkable group faced challenges with the tenacity and resilience that define true leaders.

On June 7th, at the Church of St. Ignatius Loyola, the Class of 2024 was celebrated with a memorable graduation ceremony. Jaylene Gonzalez, our senior speaker, delivered a heartfelt farewell, reminding her peers of the courage they’ve shown throughout their journey. Dr. Mark DeWaele, a long-time trustee, offered an inspiring commencement speech, encouraging our graduates to face the future with strength and boldness.

FY2024 Revenue & Expenses Highlights Year ending June 30, 2024

Notes: In FY22 and FY23 there were operational shortfalls driven by a drop in revenue from CWSP as a result of the pandemic. The shortfall was covered by reserves generated during the Resilience Fund campaign and by one-time federal PPP loans.

Keith & Miller Foundation

When Cristo Rey New York High School was halfway through its first academic year, the Charles Lawrence Keith & Clara Miller Foundation gave the school a $10,000 gift. It was just the beginning of the generous support Cristo Rey would receive from the Foundation over the next two decades. Last year, as part of its plan to complete its philanthropic work, the Foundation awarded Cristo Rey two sunset grants totaling $1 million to support the creation of the Charles Lawrence Keith & Clara Miller Scholarship. Each honoree’s nonprofit placement will be sponsored, and the cost of those students’ education will receive additional support. The names of honored students will be engraved on the Keith & Miller Award plaque, which hangs outside the CWSP office. Cristo Rey is deeply grateful to the Foundation and its President, former Cristo Rey Trustee Brian O’Dwyer, for this opportunity to honor the legacy of Charlie Keith, who helped many needy New Yorkers through his philanthropy.
