Message from Raizi Chechik Head of School It is with pride and joy that we share our 2020-21 Annual Report.

This report highlights a truly unique and awe-inspiring year for our school. We came together as a community to re-open our doors, creating a safe and secure environment that allowed our students to flourish academically and socially. I am in awe of what our faculty were able to accomplish in the classroom and on Zoom, challenging our students with engaging and meaningful learning, inspiring deeper connections to Torah and Israel, and continuing to foster, even from afar, the midot and values which are so core to who we are.

The resilience of our students, families, and faculty inspired me daily, as did our children’s appreciation for being physically present in school. We saw our community live its ethos, as students, faculty and families supported each other through sickness, quarantines and loss. As we share the highlights of the year that was, it is with a heart full of prayer that we hope for a rising year of health and blessing for our school, our nation and our world.

Message from Tova Epstein President of the Board of Directors I am filled with gratitude as I reflect on our school’s accomplishments in this 2020-21 Annual Report. What is outlined in this summary is due to the tremendous efforts of our Board of Directors, lay leaders, administration, staff, and faculty. Their dedication to the financial health of our school and the academic growth, mental health, and physical safety of our children could not be overstated.

This year, we had two priorities—opening safely and ensuring every child continued to receive a stellar MDS education. We established the Covid-19 Relief Fund, which raised funds to support the $600,000 in increased costs associated with reopening. We raised an additional $1 million toward scholarships and programming, ensuring that our students could learn and thrive educationally and socially, despite the pandemic around them and often the financial uncertainty of their families. We cut hundreds of thousands of dollars from our budget to offset the lack of rental and camp revenue, and at the same time invested in technology which was fundamental to the success of the year. We also supported many areas that will promote our school’s growth in the future even beyond these Covid times.

As all this was happening, we continued to provide an excellent education in a warm, nurturing, and safe environment for our students.

On behalf of the Board of Directors, I want to thank each and every one of you for your dedication, patience, and generosity. Every year, but especially this year, I am grateful to be part of the MDS community.

Treasurer’s Report When MDS first shut down in March 2020 and our education team was transitioning to a new learning environment because of COVID, our finance team swung into action to secure our financial well-being.

We immediately reduced our building costs and were among the first to receive a PPP loan (which has since been forgiven) to begin meeting the emerging COVID-related financial challenges.

This school year presented new challenges, as direct COVID costs (including operating a second campus) strained a budget that was already at risk of lost revenues in a most uncertain financial time.

But through hard work (and a lot of ‫)השגחה פרטית‬, we endured. While we increased financial aid on a student-for-student basis our by more than a quarter, and maintained our investments in education, bolstering our teaching ranks, student:teacher ratios and salaries.. In order to make MDS as financially accessible as possible, we continue to maintain tuition just below our cost to educate and to offer generous tuition assistance.

We owe tremendous thanks to our donors, who made this year a record year for contributions, and to our government, which came through with a second forgivable PPP loan and additional grant fundsto help offset losses due to attrition, lower net tuition revenue, lack of rental and camp income and increased operating expenses during COVID. As we look forward to the upcoming school year, our Board has mapped out a plan to deploy our resources efficiently and judiciously to ensure the continued vibrance of our education and viability of our institution for decades to come.
