Titus County Judge Brian Lee wears his robe, one last time, in the final days before his retirement.
Metroplex to Mount Pleasant and back again
Lee spends four decades finding success in business; tops career off with three terms as Titus County Judge
By Sonya Roberts-Woods
Though not a native, three-term Titus County Judge Brian Lee found his way to Mount Pleasant, as the old adage goes, as soon as he could. After spending nearly 40 years here, Lee is now grateful for both the countless lessons he learned and the forever friends he made along the way.
Originally from Fort Worth, Lee’s childhood upbringing can best be described as idyllic.
The oldest of two, Lee and his younger sister, Courtney, were nurtured by parents Oliver Vanderbilt Lee and Barbara Lee. While his mother provided the much-needed stability as a stay-at-home mother, his father worked in a highly, classified area of General Dynamics, now known as Lockheed Martin, until his retirement.
“There are probably only a few people who can say they never visited their parents’ job,” Lee said. “I never saw my father’s desk.”
Described as diligent savers, Lee vividly remembers that his college-educated parents made daily sacrifices.
“My mother was the driving force behind my learning how to have good work ethics and how to treat people with respect,” he said. “My sister and I learned that delayed gratification would allow us to pursue our goals and dreams and how to succeed in life. We were always taught to invest in ourselves first.”
Lee’s mother, who taught school until young Brian was about five years old, handpicked the schools he attended and his teachers each year. Succeeding in the classroom, Lee graduated from Paschal High School in Fort Worth, a campus known for producing numerous national merit scholars.
“Early on, I knew sports would not be for me,” he smiled. “I wasn’t tall enough or big enough to really compete so I focused on my studies. And when I wasn’t in school, I also had a pretty good business mowing yards. I was 13 when I started doing that and I saved my money all the way through high school.”
Early on, the close-knit family of four lived a humble life focusing on what was next to come.
“My parents’ sacrifices put us both through Baylor University,” he said. “I didn’t have to work while I was in college thanks to what they saved. I was expected to focus on my classes and do my best.”
And that’s exactly what he did. Majoring in accounting, Lee was also a member of the prestigious Phi Delta Theta fraternity.
“I had four fantastic years at Baylor,” he said. “I was not a kid that should have financially been able to go to Baylor, but my parents made education a priority for myself and my sister. I formed lasting relationships while I was there. Some of my closest friends from college continue to be my main circle of friends to this day.”

LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT
Lee also formed a lasting relationship with anything to do with numbers.
“Math always came easy to me,” he said. “I really enjoyed numbers. I liked making money and saving it.”
While Lee focused on his studies, he also found a little time to socialize. One particular fellow female Bear immediately caught his eyes during his junior year.
“We lived in the same apartment complex and that’s how we met and started dating,” he said of his initial encounter with his future wife, Judy. “I lived with three other roommates in a two-bedroom apartment. Back then, that was great. Now, everybody has to have their own room.”
The pair continued to date with Judy later graduating a semester ahead of Brian. She moved back to Dallas while he finished up and graduated.
“By January of my senior year, I knew she was the one,” he said. “She was from a fantastic Christian family. She had grown up in the church at First Baptist Dallas. I just didn’t have any question that she was the one for me. When you know, you know.”
By March of his senior year, Lee had secured a job working for Ernst and Whinney, now Ernst and Young, a major accounting firm in downtown Dallas. After one week on the job, the couple got engaged June 1980 and married that November.
For three years, the two made a life in Dallas working and enjoying each other. The young couple then welcomed their first child in May of 1983. A few months later, Lee’s fellow Baylor classmate,
Larry Lawrence called with a business proposition. Larry, along with his wife Zena, had moved to Mount Pleasant to work for his father-in-law, Dr. Lee McKellar, in 1982.
“We would visit them (the Lawrences) in Mount Pleasant from time to time and just really enjoyed it,” Lee said. “It was kind of our way to get out of the hustle and bustle of Dallas and just relax in the country.”
Lawrence wanted Lee to come work for the McKellar Ranch. Then Dr. McKellar, while on a trip in Dallas, made a visit to see Lee and officially offered him a job as both his personal accountant and the head accountant for the ranch business.
“Dr. McKellar offered me an amount that was more than the two of us were making before,” he explained. “We both thought this is an interesting opportunity. We didn’t know how long we’d be in Mount Pleasant, but we decided let’s go give it a try.”
Dr. McKellar built Lee an office with all of the bells and whistles.
“He set me up first class,” Lee recalled. “At the time, personal computers had just come out so we bought an expensive IBM and that’s where I learned how to do computerized bookkeeping. What that job gave me was a chance to build a set of books from scratch, have a few employees work under me and experience small town life.”
The young family quickly settled in to their new life forming a great circle of friends after initially joining the First Baptist congregation. But just three short years later, in 1986, the McKellar Ranch experienced tough financial times acerbated by high-interest rates.
“That was a difficult year working through reorganization bankruptcy,” Lee explained.
By Spring 1987, Dr. McKellar had returned to the medical field full time. But not before he suggested to Lee what his next move should be. Now firmly established in Mount Pleasant, the Lees wanted to stay in the area.
“While I was working for Dr. McKellar, he and I would often travel and eat at other El Chico restaurants,” Lee said. “We both liked Mexican food. Dr. McKellar thought it would be a good idea to open one in Mount Pleasant.”
After doing research on all the ends and outs of franchising, the Lees decided it was time to take the plunge and get support from family.
“At the time, my father-in-law was the top executive for Sysco Foods in Dallas so he knew exactly how risky this would be,” Lee said. “He dealt with failed restaurants all of the time so I couldn’t have picked a worse person to try to convince to let us go into the business than him. He certainly tried to talk us out of it, but the advice just went in one ear and out the other one. Judy and I were convinced we could do it.”
In early 1987, Lee’s father-in-law finally agreed to “back the note with the bank.”
“He told us that if we screwed it up it was part of our inheritance,” Lee smiled. “Judy and I were very optimistic and believed that we had the skills to do it. Back then, you could hire good people who were gifted in areas that we knew we weren’t.”
| YOUR CONNECTION 2022-2023 14
Brian Lee and his bride Judy share a smile on their wedding day in 1980.
Before the restaurant opened, Lee worked for local accountants, Baker & Johnson, during the busy tax season. In June 1987, construction began on the new business and by December they were operational.
“When the restaurant opened, we would bring our two (at the time) young kids to work with us and they watched videos on the VCR player in the office,” Lee said. “The kids did this for years while we worked. Those first four years were very difficult.”
In 1991, the couple hired Jim Chambers as general manager and the business continued to thrive. In early 2007, the Lees wanted a change of pace.
“We approached Jim about taking over the business,” Lee said. “We were ready to do something else and Jim wanted to continue the business. We were sleeping and eating that place. We couldn’t really get away from it. The first 15 years or so we could find people who were willing to work, but we started to notice a difference in the caliber of people we were hiring. They weren’t as dependable as they had been.”
The Lees worked the rest of that year preparing for the ownership transition. A year later, in August 2008, the real estate part of the business was also sold. While Lee still owned El Chico, he also started a side hustle that most people didn’t even know he had.
“I put two of my kids through college selling automated telephone systems,” Lee said.
Installing phones for countless friends and local small businesses, Lee also sold on eBay in the early days of the e-commerce craze. In 2001, Lee took a huge leap of faith purchasing an 18-wheeler filled with phone systems. The large delivery set him back six figures, but the savvy accountant-turned-small-business-owner knew he was on to something.
In fact, the telephone systems proved very profitable for the entrepreneur. A few years later, Lee discovered another unlikely-yet-lucrative business—storage buildings. At first, as a customer himself, Lee actually stored his telephone systems in the buildings. He then learned that the owner of that storage facility wanted to sell. Lee gave it some thought and decided to put in an offer purchasing his first location just north of Mount Pleasant. Today, Lee has eight other area locations with multiple units at each.
“Self storage was once considered risky and not the most stable kind of business back then when I started, but it has continued to do well,” he said. “Even when the recession hit in 2008, (200)9 and (20)10, the business did not miss a beat. Some people kept their life savings, or net worth, in that storage building. I have always felt it was the hand of God leading me into different business ventures whether it was phones, the restaurant or storage buildings. I’ve truly been blessed.”
While enjoying life after El Chico, Lee also started having several conversations with friends and fellow concrete business partners Mike and Teresa Price. Teresa, who was then Titus County Clerk, voiced concerns about local county government. At the time, Sam Russell held the position of first-term county judge. Before that, Russell, who had served in the Texas House of Representatives for almost a decade, worked under Governor Ann Richards and later served as a lobbyist.
Lee, himself, had previously served on local boards and committees including the Mount Pleasant City Council, the Industrial Foundation and the local hospital board.
Finally, after several discussions with the Prices, he posed one very important question.
“I asked: ‘what do you think about me running for
MTPLEASANTTX.COM | 15
Judy and Brian Lee are surrounded by family during a holiday celebration.
Continued to Page 16
office?’,” he said. “Several people told me I’d be stupid to run as a Republican.”
In November 2009, Lee signed up ….as a Republican. The following year, he narrowly defeated Russell, a Titus County native and longtime lawyer. Lee immediately began working to bring the various County departments closer together.
“I’m a problem solver so one of the first things I did when I took office was to get people together to talk things out,” he said. “I wanted them to know it was OK for elected officials to call each other and work together.”
During his 12-year tenure, Lee, is especially proud of his part in establishing a countywide bail bond board and picking up the pieces after losing the County’s largest taxpayer, Texas Utilities turned Luminant. But he counts reducing the judicial backlog as one of his greatest team-effort accomplishments.
“I credit John Mark (Cobern, the County Attorney) and his staff for working hard with us to get the docket current,” he said. “We moved a lot of court cases in those first four or five years. I’m pretty proud of how hard everyone worked to get rid of the huge backlog.”
Now firmly embracing life as semi-retired, Lee will continue running his successful storage unit business with help locally.
“I’ll be spending a lot more time in Rockwall to get closer to my children and grandchildren who all live in the metroplex,” he said. “Judy and I will definitely travel more and now we will be able to do so for weeks at a time.”
With three grandchildren under the age of seven, the Lees’ adult children include: Brian, Jr., who works in real estate in Carrollton; daughter, Lauren, who lives in Royce City and works for a nonprofit organization and the youngest, Preston, who is in banking and lives in Rockwall.
While both of Lee’s parents are no longer living, he still cherishes
the many lessons he learned from them as well as the lessons he’s learned from the citizens of Titus County.
“I learned to have more tolerance of people who might disagree with me or how I handle things,” he said. “As County Judge, I learned to see things more from their perspective and realize that you’re not always right and they’re not always wrong. This job made me realize that there’s a lot of truth and validity to their opinions that sometimes just needs to be heard.”
The Chamber’s 2022 Lifetime Achievement Award recipient offers this advice to others going into public office.
“Do a lot more listening than you’re probably use to doing,” he said. “Learn to control your initial emotions. Be available. Do what is best for the citizens long term instead of making shortsighted decisions based on political pressure. I’ve learned a lot over the years and believe I am leaving things in better shape than when I got there. I think that should always be the goal with anything you do.”

Rundles makes Chamber history, healthier lifestyle changes
By Sonya Roberts-Woods
A Pastor’s Journey HEALTHCARE
For Mount Pleasant native Dr. Francis Antonio “Tony” Rundles, Titus Regional Medical Center’s mantra, ‘Healthier Tomorrows Start Here’, truly served as a wakeup call to start his own healthier lifestyle journey.
As a member of the Titus County Hospital District Board of Managers since 2016, Rundles decided to take charge of his own health.
“I knew it needed to start with me,” he said. “If I was going to ask others to be healthier, I had to be willing to do the same. I needed to practice what I was preaching and be an example. Because this is my home, I want what’s best for the people around me.”
Growing up in Mount Pleasant as the oldest of five children, the future pastor first learned the importance of strong work ethic from his parents, the late Wilbert Rundles and Nona Ann (Smith) Rundles.
“My father did whatever he could to take care of us,” Rundles recalled. “He worked day and night when he had to and took on odd jobs just to provide for his family. Dad wasn’t an educated person, but he made sure his children all had an education. Mom took care of the home and made sure we stayed fed and clothed. She always made sure we had what we needed. Family was important to my parents.”
In addition to his parents, Rundles could also count on “neighborhood moms” to “fill in the gaps.” Raised on the West side of town, Rundles has never ventured too far away from Mount Pleasant.
“It was Booker Street all the way,” he laughed. “People on Riley Street and Pecan Street; we all looked out for each
other. Back then, that’s just what you did. That was when people borrowed sugar and community was everything. We were a village. People like Louise Mitchell took care of me. She was like a second mother. Mama Gene (Imogene Garrett) was my great aunt. She also looked out for me. There were so many people who loved and nurtured me.”
Rundles also vividly remembers fun times at Oaklawn Park swimming and playing in countless softball tournaments as a member of the Master Jammers team. That athletic prowess also translated into success on the football field in junior high where the team went undefeated two years straight. Once in high school, Rundles continued to excel as a standout athlete lettering in football, track and basketball. Coached under Donnie Laurence and later Mike Zoffuto, it was Zoffuto’s teachings especially that still resonate with him today.
“Coach Zoffuto was a former drill sergeant for the Marine (Corps),” he said. “He paid attention to every detail and he taught us to do the same. Right before each game, he would have the team go into a dark room and just listen to General Patton and visualize winning. Our team motto when we came to high school our freshman year was ‘Win state.’ Once Coach Zoffuto came, we changed our motto our senior year to ‘We believe.’ Coach Zoffuto truly made us believe in ourselves.”
As a running back ranked 80th in the state and as one of the fastest on the 100-meter run, Rundles and his Tiger teammates went 9-2 in football his senior year.

While sports were an important part of his high school career, he also served as a member of the school newspaper staff and later worked for a short time with the Mount Pleasant Daily Tribune during his first year of college. He even minored in journalism in his first year of college at Cypress Basin Community College, a division of Paris Junior College held off site in Mount Pleasant.
“I had offers to play football, go off to college and at one time I wanted to be a journalist,” he said. “But I just wasn’t quite prepared like I should have been. I wasn’t ready when the time came to go off to school so I stayed near home and, for a time, just lost my way.”
During that time, Rundles also gave his life to Christ as a member of the First Church of God in Christ in Mount Pleasant. Rundles believes God was working to prepare him for his life to come.
“I got derailed for a time there and went through a period that I often call deferred blessings,” Rundles said. “Just like Proverbs 13:12 (Hope deferred maketh the heart sick: but when the desire cometh, it is a tree of life) sometimes you set goals, but don’t accomplish them on the front side of life. You feel deflated and want to give up. But when you are able to finally accomplish them on the back side of life, it’s an awesome thing. It’s all in God’s timing which is always perfect.”
While at a crossroads after deciding not to return to college for another semester, Rundles received a call from the Texas Highway Department in 1983.
“They wanted to hire me so I jumped on it,” he said. “I was 20 years old at the time. It was a great career and eventually I was promoted to lab supervisor which was a first for a black person in this area. I worked 30 years and left with full retirement at the age of 50.”
The same year he started a new career he also found the love of his life.
“Lillie (Tumey) was a grade behind me in high school,” Rundles said. “We had the same psychology class together. In high school, we were just friends. I think that’s the best way to start a relationship. But then, she was home from college and we had our first date July 1, 1983. We were married on February 6, 1984.”
Just three short years into his new marriage, Rundles had a chance for a “do over” of sorts.
“It was 1987 when the Lord God saved me real good,” he said. “God’s hand was in it because that was just long enough for me to miss some things in life. I had been saved before, but this time was different. It was truly a pivotal point in my life.”
His next assignment, just three years later, would also be divinely ordered.
“I was called to the ministry and began preaching,” Rundles said.
Several years later, through an encounter with an inmate during a jail ministry visit, Rundles’ life was further transformed.
“The inmate ministered to me indirectly,” he explained. “He spoke a word that God affirmed to me. James 4:10 says: Humble yourselves in the sight of God and I will lift you up. That scripture radiated my spirit. Three years later, we renovated the old funeral home and started the church.”
Before and after photos of the Rundles’ couple show their dramatic health transformation.

Dr. Rundles regularly works out in the TitusFIT gym.
Motivated to continue God’s work, Rundles became the founding pastor of the Greater Hope Church of God in Christ in Mount Pleasant in 2000.
“We started with just 12 people and the ministry just flourished,” he said.
In fact, the congregation moved to a new location, at 1398 Elyse Avenue, in 2012 and has continued to thrive with numerous ministries including for women, young men and brotherhood. Rundles also serves as the Superintendent of the Greater Hope Outreach District and is Chairman of the Board of the Superintendents for the Texas Northeast 3rd Jurisdiction within the Church of God in Christ denomination.
Now retired for a decade, Rundles has been able to devote even more time to the family business, Tumey Mortuary, with his wife and mother-in-law. He also has had more time to spend with his three adult children including daughters Ashley McQueen and Toni Rundles and son Sean Rundles. He and his wife are also the proud grandparents to seven grandchildren:
Brooklyn Hines, Rihanna Hines, Amaya McQueen, Princess McQueen, Logan Rundles, Preston Rundles and Braydon Rundles.
Retirement also allowed Rundles time to earn three theology degrees starting in 2016 when he received a Bachelor of Arts (B.A) in Theology and Bible with High Distinction from Trinity College of the Bible and Theological Seminary. He also holds a Doctor of Divinity (D.DIV) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) from Atlantic Coast Theological Seminary.
Rundles was also appointed to a countywide position at the urging of one of his favorite, former coaches.
“Coach (Willie) Williams came to me, the year before he passed away, at that first Juneteenth celebration (downtown on the square in 2019) and told me how proud he was of me,” Rundles said. “He wanted me to take his place on the (hospital) board. That meant a lot to me that he thought enough of me to ask me to serve. He also encouraged me to join the Chamber and that’s when I later became a part of that first Diversity and Inclusion Committee. As a coach, Coach Williams was very stern and tough, but he always encouraged us. Our class was actually the last class he coached, during my sophomore year, before he took the job as principal at the junior high. It felt good to have him still encouraging me now as an adult. He wanted me to be more involved in the community. Whether I was a kid playing sports or now a grown man with a wife and kids, he was still fully invested in seeing me succeed.”
Terry Scroggin, Chief Executive Officer for Titus Regional Medical Center, credits Rundles with helping him to stay focused on the mission at hand.
“Tony inspires me to use equity lenses daily ensuring individuals are not marginalized and OUR health system meets their individual needs,” Scroggin said.
With a penchant for taking on leadership roles in the community, Rundles made Chamber history in 2022 becoming the first African American to hold the office as board president.
“It has been an honor to serve as a Chamber leader,” he said. “At the Chamber, we are very family oriented; very diverse and very tight-knit. Whenever we see each other, we immediately want to hug one another.”
Under Rundles’ leadership, nearly 50 new members joined the Chamber which now boasts a membership roll of more than 500 local businesses and individuals.
“What I especially like about the chamber is that it is for everybody,” Rundles continued. ‘It’s not for just one group of people, but everyone can benefit from what the Chamber offers. I also like the fact that we work well together as a team meeting the needs of the community. And whether you are a Mom and Pop store or a big corporation, you have the same Chamber benefits. We truly are one chamber; one voice.”
Sometime in 2018 or 2019, Rundles’ own voice spoke to him about his health.
“I realized that, even though I wasn’t necessarily at high risk, I still wasn’t taking care of myself like I should,” he said. “When you start feeling sluggish and tired all of the time, it’s time to listen to your body. When I got on the scale at 5’6” barefooted weighing 280.4 pounds, I knew I had to do something. So my

wife and I started the journey together. We do intermittent fasting and try not to eat after a certain time at night. I also started walking and exercising more. Since I made those changes, I’ve lost and maintained at least a 30-pound loss.”
“I like the quote that says: ‘Don’t let a stumble in the road be the end of your journey,’” he said. “Your health is a lifetime journey. And with any journey, there are highs and lows. If you eat bad for one meal, just start doing better with the next meal.”
In addition to eating better, Rundles attends the TitusFit Wellness Center four days a week where he usually completes a cardio workout combined with strength training.
“Dr. Rundles has represented OUR community ensuring all segments are given the opportunity to access health care,” Scroggin said. “Tony and his wife have been inspirations for many on their journey of improving their health and wellness. They are true selfless leaders.”
Despite the rewards, Rundles admits the journey has not always been easy.
“Consistency is the hardest part of all of this,” he said. “You have to be consistent and stay the course.”
Rundles stayed the course when it came to writing a book that was first a sermon in 2007. Published in 2021, the book entitled, Throw Her Down, has been extensively promoted.
“The book is now in stores in Australia, the UK and Canada,” Rundles said. “It just blows my mind how well the book has done. It is about that Jezebel spirit. It’s about a controlling, manipulative spirit that tries to undermine leadership. This is something that can happen not only in the church, but also the corporate world.”
With more writing projects on the horizon, Rundles continues to have a can-do attitude about his health and life in general.
“Failure is not final until you quit,” he said. “You just have to keep going.”

Community-minded company expands exponentially to meet market demand
By Sonya Roberts-Woods
The Diamond C Way: Do Work. Love Strong.
Synonymous with creating quality products and a strong sense of community, the Diamond C Trailers company has been on a steady, upward trajectory all while diligently working hard and intentionally loving strong.
What started in March 1985 after the demise of another local trailer company has now become a multimillion-dollar, family-owned operation. In 1984, Kim Crabb, the matriarch of the family, suddenly found herself out of a job. For more than three years, she worked at the former trailer business learning everything she could. Her husband, Mike, drove route trucks at the time and knew his way around an auto body shop very well.
“My biggest concern about starting our own company was making sure we wouldn’t have to shut down later on,” Kim Crabb said. “I wanted to be sure we figured out a plan, that once we hired people, they would be able to keep their jobs and take care of their families.”
The Crabbs also knew they would need money to get started so they approached a few family members about investing in the concept. Several turned them down. Undeterred, the young couple decided to ask Kim’s parents.
“God took care of us because we would not have been where we are today most likely if any of those family members had said ‘yes,’” Kim Crabb said. “So, then we went to my parents. My Mom wasn’t so sure they should invest in the company because it was their savings. My Dad, on the other hand, believed we could do it so eventually that’s where we got the money to help us get started.”
The Crabbs started the business in their backyard—literally. In the beginning, the money was short and the days were very long for the classmates-turned-married couple who, at the time, had 2 ¾ children: daughters Kristen (who now works in real estate) and Caroline (who now co-owns a
BUSINESS
leather shoe company) and future CEO Jeffrey on the way. They would later add son Jacob to round out the offspring quad.
“After Mom’s job shut down, she had trouble finding another one because she was pregnant with me,” Jeffrey Crabb said. “So that was even more motivation for them to start the business. Diamond C was born in March 1985 and I was born two months later in May.”
“Once we knew the business was a go, we just had to trust that God would lead us in the right direction, keep the faith and stay humble,” Kim Crabb said.
“We were raised at a time when you just did whatever you had to in order to survive,” Mike Crabb said. “My father was a brick layer and remodeler so all I knew was work. I was raised to work.”
How the co-founders met
To talk about the creation of Diamond C and the hard work involved, there first has to be a discussion about just how Mike Crabb and then Kim Copeland initially met.
A mutual friend pointed Mike out to Kim during their senior year at Mount Pleasant High School. Mike was interested in a date, but Kim wasn’t too impressed with his attire on that particular day.
“He had on cowboy boots and a western-looking shirt and I told my friend ‘I’m not into cowboys.’ Actually, Mike wasn’t really even a cowboy,” she said.
“I was the farthest thing from a cowboy,” Mike laughed.
With no match made, Kim went off to school at Tyler Junior College while Mike attended Paris Junior College for a semester. By December of that same year, Kim was back home for the holidays and ran into Mike, along with some of his friends, at a local eatery.
“We all met up at the Dairy Queen and I started asking how everyone was liking college,” she explained. “Mike told me he was back working in Mount Pleasant. And then I said, ‘well, you should move to Tyler. We have fun in Tyler.’ Two months later, he moved to Tyler and the rest is history.”
A year after they both moved back to Mount Pleasant they married in July 1977. Now partners in life, they decided to become partners in business eight years later.
“I think we meshed the best of both worlds together when we started the business,” Mike Crabb explained. “I knew a little bit about a lot of things and stayed out in the shop designing and creating. I didn’t have to worry about the office. I knew Kim was going to take care of that. Her mother was a professional secretary at the refinery working for several executives for many years. That’s what Kim went to school for at TJC. Her office skills and strict adherence to office principles and rules have always been impeccable. I never had anything to worry about when it came to running the office.”
Hard times at Diamond C
In those earlier years, the husband-and-wife duo did worry about how to keep the business afloat. In 1997, Diamond C opened a location in Utah. Four years later, the facility shut down and almost took the entire operation with it.

“That closure nearly brought the business to bankruptcy,” Jeffrey Crabb explained. “My parents were exhausted emotionally, physically and financially from that experience. I call the period from 2001-2003 the dark ages because it truly was a dark time for the company.”
“After 20 years in the business, we felt like we had carried it as far as the two of us could go,” Kim Crabb explained. “We were in a difficult time. Mike and I felt like we were at a dead end. We weren’t sure we could grow the company. And so, one day Jeffrey said to us: ‘do you mind if I try?’”
Enter the couple’s 19-year-old, third born. Jeffrey actually started working at the company while still in high school. As a sophomore, he worked with tail lights in the shop after school. By his senior year, he worked in the retail trailer shop and from there he began handling the marketing part of the company. He took over as CEO in 2005.
“By default, I sort of fell into it,” Jeffrey Crabb smiled. “In all of my ignorant glory, I didn’t know any better.”
Today, Jeffrey’s involvement in the company is a full-circle moment for sure.
“Diamond C, in the earlier year, was actually our playground,” Jeffrey Crabb said. “It was any mischievous child’s dream come true. Some kids hopped hay bales for fun. We hopped trailers in the backyard.”
“Jeffrey and Jacob are what we call trailer brats,” Mike Crabb said. “They literally came up in the business as infants.”
While Jeffrey joined the team in a leadership role early on, Jacob was convinced he, instead, wanted to be a first responder.
“After high school, I went to the fire academy,” Jacob Crabb explained. “I really wanted to be a fireman, but after that didn’t work out, I had to go in a different direction. All of this happened on purpose. It was God’s will. I didn’t realize it at the time, but now looking back that’s exactly why it happened the way it happened.”
After several years working wherever he was needed in the company, the husband and father of two transitioned into the Vice President of Sales and Marketing position in 2018.
“I’m a talker so sales just made sense for me,” Jacob Crabb said. “I’m just like Mom. I like to talk to people and help them. What working in sales did

for me was ignite a passion to help people whether through sales or in leadership helping them, however I could, to grow and succeed. It was a unique chain of events that eventually led me to sales. At the time, we were needing to really grow and so sales was a big part of that growth. Jeffrey is more like Dad so he naturally took on the role of design, innovation and product development. We each just naturally gravitated to the roles we now have within the company.”
“God puts you in places where your strengths stick out,” Mike Crabb said. “When we would race boats, Jacob would go with me and he knew no stranger. He would wander from boat to boat talking to people just like he had known them all of his life. That’s what he brings to the table.”
Jacob also brings a keen sense of understanding how social media has the ability to dramatically impact the company’s bottom line and the customer’s overall experience—to the tune of over 60,000 followers.
“We had to figure out a way to relate to our customers and give them a visual connection to the brand, to who we are and to the innovation,” Jacob Crabb explained. “So, one day we just picked up a camera and started doing videos. What drove us crazy was that some of our competitors were already doing videos, but it was like watching paint dry. We wanted to connect the brand to the customer and show them why they needed our product and how it could help them.”
Diamond C’s next chapter
in how those core values had played out for us in the previous 25 years that gave me the confidence to take the risk. There was definitely no guarantee it would work, but it did. And when we had capacity, customers showed up and we did our best to take care of them.”
“That was a galvanizing moment in the journey,” he continued. “It was at that point that we knew we did the right thing. That award in 2019 and the growth that we had realized up until then really set the stage to scale the company to where we are today and beyond.”
And then COVID hit.
“COVID really did some crazy things to the world and to the trailer industry, “Jeffrey Crabb said. “All of our manufacturing is here, but our customer base is nationwide. So, before Titus County even had its first confirmed case, half of our customer base was already shut down in California, Oregon, Washington, the far Northeast and the New England states.”
“God puts you in places where your strengths stick out,”
Mike Crabb said.
“The formula, then and now, has been to focus on doing what we do best—building innovative trailers all while striving to take the best care possible of everyone involved in that process,” Jeffrey Crabb said. “It’s been a very imperfect journey with lots of hard lessons learned, but we just continue to focus on those core values.”
Starting in 2016, Diamond C significantly extended the scope of those core values embarking on a monumental building project to create a massive 135,000 square foot powder coat facility at their flagship location just south of Mount Pleasant. The expansion would increase the familyowned company’s potential for exponential growth.
“That expanded our manufacturing capacity significantly,” Jeffrey Crabb said. “From 2017-2020, we gained a lot of market share. There was a good, strong demand for the product that we had designed and built. By the grace of God, we had that trust and respect from our customers. So, when we had more capacity, they wanted more.”
And more is what Diamond C delivered. Receiving the Fastest Growing Market Share Award in the Open, Flatbed Industry in 2019 signaled a new era for Diamond C.
“There was definitely a lot of risk associated with expanding,” Jeffrey Crabb explained. “Some would say that I bet the farm when we did that. But it was confidence
But in less than three weeks, after sending the entire workforce home, they returned.
“As soon as we brought them back, at like half capacity, it was the wild, wild West for the trailer industry,” Jeffrey Crabb said. “Our best guess is that all of these people were now sheltering in place at their homes. They weren’t going on summer vacations or traveling for baseball or spending money like they usually do. They were stuck at home staring at their broken-down fences and the landscaping that they always wanted to upgrade. And all of those projects required trailers to get the work done. In a matter of a few weeks, we went from a shutdown to the unknown of wondering if we would ever return to being completely sold out. The whole trailer industry was sold out too. It really took the whole year of 2021 to dig out of that and to try to get dealers some inventory back. Coming into 2020 with really strong market-share growth and the phenomenon of COVID really made it clear to us that we had an opportunity to grow our impact far beyond where we had been and where we are today. This is all way more than what we could have ever asked for or imagined.”
Growing that impact meant Diamond C needed more facilities and even more team members. In the last 5-6 years, the company has increased its workforce from 175 to 650 to now more than 800 (and growing) employees. Acquisitions such as the former Parker Trailers plant, a former manufacturing building on Industrial Road and the Mount Pleasant Economic Development Corporation (MPEDC) speculative building in Business Park as well as the purchase of a former car dealership location in Pittsburg. That growth is also part of what earned them the Chamber’s Business of the Year award in 2022. But regardless of the growth, the owners remain committed to their original, core values.

Do Work. Love Strong.
“Diamond C is a combination of yearning to build an extraordinary product and taking care of all of the people involved for many years running--the same core values and principles that my parents really founded the business on,” Jeffrey Crabb said. “We focus on our primary stakeholders—our team members, customers and the community.
“We didn’t really reinvent the wheel,” the husband and father of five continued. “We just kept doing what my parents did their best to do for the first two decades of Diamond C. They never really had a name, or a label, for it. But as we started really growing about 10-11 years ago and I no longer knew every team member personally, our culture began fraying at the edges. We had to get serious about defining what our culture was, what our core values were and what our purpose was. It became a process of soul searching for the company’s soul to determine what makes us who we are and that quickly became clear.”
Who they are today as a company, almost four decades later, is a direct result of Mike and Kim’s significant influence and impact.
“My Dad’s part, his personality or focus was always the innovation of the product,” Jeffrey Crabb said. “He always had that drive to do extraordinary, innovative, highquality work--cut no corners. So that’s what we coined ‘Do Work.’ It’s about the relentless pursuit of progress. The other piece that balances it out is the ‘Love
Strong’ and that’s always been a part of my mother’s DNA. She has always been passionate about loving and serving our team members as well as doing the right thing for our vendors, customers and the community. As long as we don’t leave either one of those two things out, the formula will always work very well.”
“Doing what we do at Diamond C is an opportunity to continue impacting people in a positive way both internally and externally,” he continued. “I really think we’re just getting started in that journey. We have so much opportunity that we’ve been blessed with. In turn, we want to continue being a blessing to our team members, customers and community.”
The two brothers, along with Chief Financial Officer Jeff Weaver, have formed a triangle of trust providing strong leadership to an ever-growing group of team members.
“I call them the Three Js,” Mike Crabb said. “I’m proud of the fact that they have remained grounded through all of this. They are really tackling some big things and it’s exciting to see what is happening. Over the years, I’ve thought: Why us? Why did this work? In the grand scheme of things, God has big plans and we don’t know what they are. We just have to trust Him.”
“I feel like we have three, great Christian men who are going to pray about it and think it through before they make any kind of big decisions,” Kim Crabb said. “Now that’s not to say that things couldn’t go wrong, but I think Mike and I are in good hands.”
Remaining a family-owned trailer company is somewhat of an anomaly in today’s market.
“We see a lot of instances where people like doing business with a truly, family-run organization,” Mike Crabb said. “In our industry, in the last few years especially, that’s less and less common so I am glad both of the boys chose to be a part of it.”
“In the 80s, when my parents started the business, 80 percent of the trailer businesses were family owned,” Jeffrey Crabb explained. “Now, it’s just the reverse. Less than 20 percent are still family owned.”
The Diamond C family is also well known for its generous, give-back philosophy donating time and resources to everything from trailer loads (literally) of school supplies collected by team members to trash cleanups in town to spearheading Sunday church services to helping the women and children of Hope Ministries in whatever way possible. It’s something the grandmother of 13, in her wildest dreams, could never have imagined.
“Never in a million years would we have thought this business would be doing all of what it is doing now and be where it is today—never,” Kim Crabb said. “We definitely have God to thank for that.”
