WELCOME TO SUMMER @ MPA! Summer@MPA 2014 is here! Please take a look at some of the wonderful classes and camps we have to offer. Each Summer@MPA class and camp offers high-quality instruction, whether in academics, sports or artistic endeavors. Our excellent teachers and staff create a caring, active and fun environment in which children are free to explore and learn. We offer specialized classes for students enterting K through grade 12 during the weeks of: June1620, June 23-27 and August 11-15. We have made some exciting changes to our program to make it more convenient and accessible to all students and families. You may now register for individual classes, and we have reduced the cost of tuition to better serve our families. In addition, we are offering you the choice of paper registration, or online registration! Go to Moundsparkacademy.org/ summer@mpa to register online. Please see opposite page for tuition fees and other information. Summer@MPA is excited to offer Camp Invention again this year. Camp Invention is a weeklong summer enrichment program partnering with Mounds Park Academy for 32.5 hours of programming designed to challenge students in the areas of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) activities through inquiry-based, hands-on activities. This program is open to students entering grades 1-6. Students must register through the camp invention site: campinvention.org or by calling 1-800-968-4332. Panther Camp is open to students entering grades KG-6 next fall. We provide theme based educational experiences including field trips, arts and crafts, outdoor experiences, a summer reading partnership with our local library as well as full use of all our campus has to offer including kitchen, labs, and more! Please look for NEW Abrakadoodle, Steppingstone Theatre, expanded aerodynamics/rocketry class (with field trips!) as well as instruction in web design, 3Ddesign, and much more! We are also proud to offer before and after care at no extra charge to Summer@MPA students entering KG and up. Extended day is open at 7:00 AM and closes at 6:00 PM. TUITION RATES AM Extended Day (7:00 AM until 9:00 AM): no charge! PM Extended Day (4:00 PM until 6:00 PM): no charge! *Please note there is a $1.00 per minute, per child late fee. Payment must be given to staff at time of late pick up. Extended Day Care is available before the first class begins (7:00-9:00 AM) and after the last class ends (4:00-6:00 PM). Extended Day is not available while classes are in session, and children must either be registered for a class or picked up by a parent/guardian after their class ends. It is recommended children register for back-to-back classes. If children are left on campus and are not registered for a class during the time Extended day is not available, the child will be entered into an available class at the parent’s expense without applicable discounts.

WEEK ONE CLASSES

9–10:30 AM • JUNE 16-20

MIGHTY FUN MATH If math is your thing, this is the class for you! We will be learning and reviewing math skills in fun and unusual ways. Get ready to become a mighty math master! Grades K-2

GOLF FOR EVERYONE! This class is perfect for anyone who loves golf! No experience required. Learn the basics of golf, or perfect your game while spending time with your friends. Possible field trip to the Golf Dome driving range! Grades K-4

AERODYNAMICS/ROCKETRY 9:00-12:10 — MITCH THOMSEN Students interested in rocketry and aerodynamics will find this hands-on class fascinating! Paper, cardboard, balsa gliders and powered gliders will be constructed and launched. Attention to detail, reading and understanding directions, creativity, problem solving, proper use of tools, and understanding concepts are inherent parts of the student experience. Each student will build at least 2 rockets and 4 gliders during the week, and they will be able to bring them home and enjoy the rest of summer! This class will be focused on aerodynamics and will end with a fun Friday field trip! Grades 3-8

BEGINNING SPANISH Let your love of Spanish language come alive as you cook, play and create crafts while using lots of Spanish words! This class is intended for beginning Spanish students. No experience necessary! Grades K-2

KITCHEN CHEMISTS This class will use common kitchen items in not so common ways. We will investigate chemical reactions, take an up close look at items found in your pantry, make a mess and even make delicious things to eat! Have an explosive (but safe) time in our kitchen! Grades K-3 FRENCH COOKBOOK Interested in learning how to cook some classic French recipes? Our teacher will share culinary secrets for making some delicious traditional recipes. Make enough to try and take home and share! Grades 4-8

WE DIG VOLLEYBALL 1 All skill levels welcome to learn through drills and games led by experienced coaches. If you have never played volleyball before, don’t be shy! If you consider yourself an expert, we will challenge you. We will play both indoors and outdoors. Grades 4-8 IMPROVISATIONAL THEATER This class is for those students ready to jump in and learn improv acting basics while having a blast! Through physical warm ups, zany skits and character work, this class is sure to be non-stop fun. There is an optional opportunity to showcase your new skills in front of other summer participants on Friday! Grades 3-5 INTRO TO WEB DESIGN – (9:00 AM-12:10 PM) Have you ever wanted your own website? Want to customize it and truly make it yours? Don’t know how? Well, you’ve come to the right place. In this class, we will teach you about how the internet works, how to design your own website with HTML and CSS, and how to host it so anyone can view it. Grades 5-8

10:40–12:10 AM • JUNE 16-20

Grades 6-8 SENSORY OVERLOAD In this class we encourage kids to use all five senses while we conduct experiments, create works of art, play games and HAVE FUN! We will end the week by making tie-dyed shirts and other colorful keepsakes! Grades K-5

INTRO TO WEB DESIGN – (9:00 AM-12:10 PM) Have you ever wanted your own website? Want to customize it and truly make it yours? Don’t know how? Well, you’ve come to the right place. In this class, we will teach you about how the internet works, how to design your own website with HTML and CSS, and how to host it so anyone can view it. Grades 5-8 COMPUTER KIDS CORNER Children will be introduced to the FUNdementals of technology. They will learn many of the special terms that we call computer language. We will use ageappropriate, educational software while learning about the basic menu applications and keyboarding skills. They will print their own greeting card and have lots of fun! Grades K-2 CONVERSATIONAL FRENCH Learn numerous basic survival skills in one week. Introduce yourself to French by playing games, singing songs and participating in a variety of activities. It is great for beginners! Grades 3-4 GINORMOUS GYM GAMES If you love to play with gym mats, play balls, scooters and parachutes, then come and have a fun and energetic time with us! Learn new games (and play old favorites like GaGa) and have ginormous fun---inside and outside! Grades K-3 BASKETBALL 1 Improve your basketball skills while learning new techniques from experienced coaches while making new friends. Grades 4-8

12:50–2:20 • JUNE 16-20

3D DESIGN –(12:50 PM - 4:00 PM) Come join us for some 3D Printing fun! We will be using Google Sketchup to create 3D models to print on A Makerbot Replicator 2, at the end of the week your child will be able to Print off one or two of there creations they made. Grades 5-8 NEW! ABRAKADOODLE – CLAY MADNESS (12:50-4:00) Prepare to get messy and muddy! In this popular camp we’ll make animals, angry birds, ornaments, pinch pots and more with all sorts of clay and dough, from Air-Dry Clay to Model Magic and we’ll even make our own Glowing Clay! In this fun filled camp we’ll slab, pinch a pot, hand build, and sculpt our way through this creative camp that features an exciting combination of projects. Grades K-5 KNITTING Come and learn how to knit, or hone your skills while we relax, listen to music and create some colorful creations! If you are a beginner, we will lend you all that you need (the yarn is yours to keep)…if you have your own needles and yarn you would like to use, bring them and we can teach you some new tricks! Knitting is a time- honored skill that you will be happy to possess! Grades 4-8 FILMMAKING (12:50-4:00) Have you ever wanted to produce your own film? Here is your chance! You will be able to use all of our equipment to produce your own movie and burn it to a CD so you can view it as often as you like! We will close with, what else? A movie screening, and popcorn, of course! *This class is from 12:50-4:00 Grades 3-6

Solve puzzles and have fun with the mysteries of math! Grades 6-8 MAGIC TREEHOUSE Travel back in time with Jack and Annie from the award winning “Magic Treehouse” series. We will go on a different magic treehouse adventure each day including a book and a project involving arts, science, history and cooking! Grades K-3 FRENCH REFRESHER In need of a bit of a refresher in French? This is the class for you. Join us and brush up on your French skills in a fun and creative way! Grades 5-6 LET’S MAKE A MESS! Finger paint---paint with your feet! Make glow in the dark slime! If you like to make a mess and be creative, then join this class and your messiness will be sated! Grades K-2

2:30–4:00 • JUNE 16-20

Grades 5-8 RED CROSS BABYSITTERS TRAINING Designed for young people ages 11-15, this course prepares you to become a great babysitter—and shows parents that you take responsibility seriously. Learn to respond to emergencies with first aid, rescue breathing and more; make good decisions under pressure, communicate effectively with parents, recognize safety and hygiene issues, manage young children, feed, diaper and care for infants, and start your babysitting business! Grades 5-8 (or ages 11-15) FRANCOPHONE Have you ever wondered about countries other than France that speak French? In this class we will explore the francophone (French-speaking) world! We will study five different Francophone countries by exploring their geography, language and culture. Grades K-2 SPANISH REFRESHER In need of a bit of a refresher in Spanish? This class is for you! Join us and brush up on your Spanish skills in a fun and creative way! Grades 3-5 PICASSO Picasso! Whether you love him or hate him, everyone can certainly recognize his style. In this class, we will learn about Picasso, his influences, and the different periods of his work. We will also use our own creativity to produce art-work that is inspired by his style, but uniquely our own. Grades 6-8

THEATER AND EXPRESSION This is an opportunity for students interested in acting on stage or film to get a grasp on the basics of theater and craft acting. Students will develop short dialogues/ monologues, perform in groups and practice reading fluency, expression, and reading comprehension through voice work to depict characters from texts of interest. This will culminate into a final play project at the end of the program, which will be recorded for students to take home and view. Grades 3-5 NEW! We will use well-known stories to inspire drawings, as well as create our own original stories! Each student will have the opportunity to share their stories with an audience if they choose. NEW! ABRAKADOODLE -DOLL’S BEST SUMMER CAMP EVER! (9:00-12:10) Bring your American Girl doll (or favorite doll) to summer camp! Each day we’ll have a new theme for you and your doll. Over the course of the week we’ll have a Doll camping day, Doll’s trip around the world, a doll’s room day and a fashion show. We’ll make a sleeping bag for our doll, matching necklaces for you and your doll, a back pack, paint a beautiful canvas for your doll’s room and many more exciting projects! Every day we will make crafts and art projects to go with the theme of the day. We’ll finish our camp with an amazing party. Bring your favorite doll! Grades K-4 FRENCH REFRESHER In need of a bit of a refresher in French? This is the class for you. Join us and brush up on your French skills in a fun and creative way! Grades 7-8 SCIENCE WIZARDS If you like making things bubble and brew, then you have come to the right place! Find out why certain mixtures fizz, gel, smoke or change color. Take home cool tricks to show your family! Grades K-4 MEXICAN COOKING WITH KARI KUNZE Tour Mexico through food with Señora Kunze as your guide! Learn how to make delicious traditional foods that you can taste and learn how to make on your own so you can share with family and friends! Grades 5-8

TRULY UNIQUE KEEPSAKES WITH JESSICA BLUE (9:00-12:10) We will make several small projects this week. Students will learn (or hone) hand-sewing techniques as they use wool felt to create decorations, accessories and small gifts. Projects include: door signs, barrettes, name banners, needle books, greeting cards, brooches…and whatever else we dream up! Grades 4-8 PICTURE BOOK COOKS “If you give a moose a muffin, he will want some jam to go with it.” Come and enjoy creating a variety of delicious recipes while exploring some classic and contemporary picture books. We will create yummy treats as well as a recipe book so you can make your favorites again and again! Grades K-3 INTRO TO WEB DESIGN – 9:00 AM - 12:10 PM Have you ever wanted your own website? Impress friends and families with your new culinary skills, and delight them with delicious treats. This class is right before lunch, so lucky for you—you will have a homemade treat to eat during lunch each day! Grades K-8 READING READINESS This class will help students improve their reading skills through games and reading passages. Taught by a tutor with past AmeriCorps K-3 Literacy program experience, students will work on fluency, expression, and comprehension. We will practice letter naming, phonetics, and combining letters to form words. Grades K-1 INTRO TO WEB DESIGN – 9:00 AM - 12:10 PM Have you ever wanted your own website? Want to customize it and truly make it yours? Don’t know how? Well, you’ve come to the right place. In this class, we will teach you about how the internet works, how to design your own website with HTML and CSS, and how to host it so anyone can view it. Grades 5-8 TALES FROM AROUND THE WORLDSTEPPINGSTONE THEATER Go deep into folktales and stories from around the world and learn about different cultures using different sounds and music as a tool for story telling! Grades K-6

12:50–2:20 • JUNE 23–27

3D DESIGN – 12:50 PM - 4:00 PM Come join us for some 3D Printing fun! We will be using Google Sketchup to create 3D models to print on A Makerbot Replicator 2, at the end of the week your child will be able to Print off one or two of there creations they made. Grades 5-8 BADMINTON Learn the basics of the game or try some friendly competition. It all depends on your level of play. In either case, there is a lot of fun in store for you! Participants will be grouped by age and skill. Grades 2-8 CLOWNING AROUND MAKEUP AND MOVEMENT—STEPPINGSTONE THEATER In this workshop, students will use different tools to explore fun characters and learn skills to help them be classic clowns! They will learn basic makeup design and application skills as well as learning how to move in creative and hilarious ways to “Clown Around!” Grades K-6 LOGIC PUZZLES Learn some new games, puzzles and solve mysterious mathematical riddles. We will work as a team while we play logic games, participate in friendly competitions, and have fun while training our brains to think like mathematicians! Grades 3-8 POETIC CREATIONS We will explore poetic inspiration found in music, nature, and more, and then create artwork based on our own original writings. Diving deep into our individual creativity, we will use all sorts of materials to make masterpieces that showcase our poetic visions. Grades K-8

WATER GAMES What is the best way to stay cool in the summer? Get wet! That is just what we will do in this fun class! Run relays, use squirters, make a water slide, and more— just be prepared to get wet! Children should come equipped each day with a towel and swimsuit, sunblock and sunglasses. Children are also permitted to bring their own squirters from home! Grades K-8 RAG RUG Make a shaggy rag rug to coordinate with your bedroom or bathroom. In this class we will cut up different fabrics and tie them to a ‘mat’ to create a trendy, multi-colored rag rug. Grades 5-8


WEEK TWO CLASSES

2:30–4:00 • JUNE 23–27

3D DESIGN – 12:50 PM - 4:00 PM Come join us for some 3D Printing fun! We will be using Google Sketchup to create 3D models to print on A Makerbot Replicator 2, at the end of the week your child will be able to Print off one or two of there creations they made. Grades 5-8 TUMBLING If you enjoy gymnastics, you’ll really “roll” with this class! Our experienced teachers will teach your child a variety of skills. Your child will have fun while staying safe. Grades K-4 BASKETBALL 2 Improve your basketball skills while learning new techniques from experienced coaches while making new friends. This week will offer a continuation of skills learned in week one. Grades 4-8 PIRATE’S LIFE FOR ME! Did you know there is buried treasure on campus? Learn to walk like a pirate, talk like a pirate and find hidden treasure! In addition to acquiring the pirate’s booty (if we can locate it!) we will also learn pirate lingo, sing pirate songs, and even earn your own pirate name! Grades K-2 THE ART OF TOY MAKING Long ago, before toys were mass produced, children and adults alike spent many hours devoted to the craft of toy making. This class will introduce you to a variety of toys you can make yourself and bring home to play with or share with a sibling or friend. Grades K-3

SCIENCE INVESTIGATORS: WILD WEATHER Snow in summer? We will make it! Lightning indoors? We will make it! A mini- tsunami? We will make it… and more! And then we will learn about how these wild weather phenomena occur and how people have learned to adapt and stay safe when wild weather hits them! Grades K-3 FAIRY/TROLL GARDENS Fairy and Troll gardens are great for boys or girls—we start with a pot that we decorate with mosaic tiles, then we select just the right plants for our fairies or trolls— after that, there is so much to do to make our garden suitable for habitation! Design landscaping, furniture, shelter and other necessary implements to create a magical home any mythical creature would love! Grades K-8


WEEK THREE CLASSES

9–10:30 AM • AUGUST 11–15

JAPANESE LANGUAGE AND CULTURE In this class, children will learn the basics of Japanese conversation, reading/writing, and crafts from an experienced Japanese language teacher. This class is suitable for beginners and those who would like to explore their interest in Japanese culture. Grades 3-5 MOVIE MAKERS—STEPPINGSTONE THEATER (9:00-12:10) Lights! Camera! Action! Be the director or be inside your own movie as a Zombie, an action hero or a fairytale princess! The possibilities are endless when you fast forward or rewind through your own created story on stage. Grades 1-8 INTRO TO KG (9:00-12:10) If you are going to be a kindergarten student at MPA in the fall, come spend some time in a kindergarten classroom and experience a typical day as a big kinder! This is a great way to get to know the school, the teachers, as well as have lots of fun before school starts! Grades K FABULOUS FIRST GRADE (9:00-12:10) Are you or your child a little hesitant about the transition to first grade? Is your child curious as to what first grade is like? Have him/her spend a day with an MPA teacher to experience a typical first grade morning. Get ready to start first grade with confidence! Grades 1 SPANISH LANGUAGE ¿Se habla español? In this class new to Spanish students or students who are interested in reviewing basic Spanish will be exposed to basic Spanish vocabulary and expressions including greetings, asking and answering simple questions, describing ourselves, talking about the weather, numbers, days

of the week, months of the year, and many more interesting topics! where your imagination will take you in this class! Grades K-5 BRAIN CHALLENGE! In the spirit of Destination Imagination and Odyssey of the Mind, this course offers students the opportunity to experience mini challenges that will not only be fun but will get your child incorporating science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and arts while learning to be flexible, patient, persistent and collaborative while solving problems together. Throughout the week students will spend half of each day working on mini challenges and the other half of class working on a bigger challenge to present at the end of the week. Grades 2-4 INTRO TO WEB DESIGN (9:00-12:10) Have you ever wanted your own website? Want to customize it and truly make it yours? Don’t know how? Well, you’ve come to the right place. With the LEGOT WeDo Robotics system, young children can build and program their own robotic creations. Designed by the experts at MIT, this unique system teaches children about simple machines, engineering, programming, and so much more. Young imaginations soar! Grades 1-5 3D DESIGN (12:50-4:00) Come join us for some 3D Printing fun! We will be using Google Sketchup to create 3D models to print on A Makerbot Replicator 2, at the end of the week your child will be able to Print off one or two of there creations they made. Grade 5-8 MEXICAN ART AND CRAFTS Learn about the beautiful art originating from Mexico and create some art of your own in this colorful and exciting class with Señora Kunze. Grades 5-8 BRAIN CHALLENGE! In the spirit of Destination Imagination and Odyssey of the Mind, this course offers students the opportunity to experience mini challenges that will not only be fun

but will get your child incorporating science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and arts while learning to be flexible, patient, persistent and collaborative while solving problems together. Throughout the week students will spend half of each day working on mini challenges and the other half of class working on a bigger challenge to present at the end of the week. Grades 2-4 MATH MYSTERIES This is a fun way to sharpen your math skills—solve math mysteries involving patterns and missing number equations, money and decimals, fractions and more! Enjoy solving these puzzles in a fun group setting while becoming a math detective! Grades 3-5 SUPER STRUCTURES If you have a knack for building forts, lego creations, Lincoln log cabins, and more, then join like-minded friends as we try building different structures out of various materials! Each day we will tackle a new project with new materials! Grades K-4

A child with high or positive self-esteem generally feels good, valued and respected. Helping children develop healthy self-esteem is key to them enjoying a successful life. Taught by Janna Fennel, an MPA staff with a psychology background in child development; this class will promote positive self-image through videos, lecture, reflection, and relaxation techniques, self-esteem builders and antibullying campaigns. Grades 5-8

BEACHCOMBERS PARADISE Take a mini vacation with this beachy class! Relax while we listen to beach music and use colored sand, shells, sea-glass, and other items to make wonderful treasures to take home! Learn how to make tropical drinks to help stay cool and hear tales from around the world’s coastal towns. Each day is a new creation to cherish and bring the seashore home with you! Grades K-8 YOGA FOR BEGINNERS Kids will move, stretch and play as they learn several yoga poses. This class will help your child relax and focus their energy for positive results. CHESS CAMP AGES 5-15, INTRODUCTORY-ADVANCED USA Chess is the largest and premier chess camp organizer for children in the United States. Their staff is comprised of the finest children’s chess instructors in North America. Registration options include mornings, afternoon and all-day sessions. Campers experience chess instruction and play in a fun filled environment designed to improve their skills whether they are interested in casual or competitive chess. INTRODUCTORY VIDEO GAME CREATION AGES 8-15 INTRODUCTORY - INTERMEDIATE, MS WINDOWS Starting with basic commands, campers will be taught in a step-by-step progression how to build a game that they design. Camp begins with an introduction to Game Maker software including adding rooms, building walls, adding backgrounds, warping to new levels, music, sound effects and many other great techniques. The first few days focus on programming basics and by late week the children are well on their way to creating their own unique game. At the end of camp each child is provided access to our custom download site. From this site they can download Game Maker LITE software, their games, our custom walk through guide and resource folder. While the game that is created at camp can be played at camp, in order to play the game at home, a license ($40 from yoyo games) is required. Discounted licenses may be available from your camp director. Once Game Maker software is downloaded, campers can continue to develop their game and create new ones as well. Campers will also receive t-shirts, trophies and a certificate of participation. VIDEO GAME CREATION – PLATFORM AGES 8-15 INTRODUCTORY - INTERMEDIATE, MS WINDOWS In the spirit of Mario, Sonic, Samus and other legendary video-game stars come our newest camp class! Campers use Game Maker software to create a side-scrolling, platform game with running, jumping, falling, climbing, blasting, and enemy stomping! Students will learn how to program real world physics of gravity and friction, as well as plotting out head scratching mazes for themselves and other avid gamers to solve! Actual programming techniques will be used to create power-ups and saved game data during the journey. Each student’s game will be a unique adventure programmed entirely by him or her! Additionally campers receive access to our custom download site featuring thousands of games as well as a t-shirt, certificate with photo and a trophy. SUMMER PANTHER CAMP FOR CHILDREN IN GRADES K-6 SELECT WEEKS FROM JUNE 30 – AUGUST 8, 2014 PROGRAM HOURS: 7AM - 6PM Panther Camp is a fun opportunity for your child to spend the day in a nurturing environment while participating in exciting summer adventures. We offer a full-day camp program with flexible daily or weekly care options. Kids will spend the day participating in age-group-specific activities such as arts and crafts, sports, group games, and weekly field trips. Our program offers different weekly themes that let kids explore nature, science, the arts and so much more. We have air-conditioned facilities, a gym, and a kitchen for cooking projects. We are surrounded by 32 acres of land with a beautiful playground and enough grounds to facilitate all of the outdoor activities. Panther Camp cost is $60/day or $250/week per child. Weekly fee includes all field trip admissions, program supplies, and daily crafts. Panther Camp is open from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily. Healthy snacks, drinks and milk are provided throughout the day, but children should bring their own cold lunch. Please do not send a lunch that must be heated or cooked. Please have your child bring a water bottle each day. Panther Camp runs from June 30 through August 8, with the exception of the three weeks that we offer summer classes: June 16-20, June 23-27 and August 11-15. REGISTRATION AND PAYMENT ARE EASY Weekly themes are listed on the next page. Please fill out one registration form per child and submit to Mounds Park Academy, Attention: Kirsten Mulraney. FAIRY TALES AND FABLES: JUNE 30-3 (REDUCED 4 DAY WEEKLY COST $200)
 Explore a magical fairy land that awaits you on the MPA campus. There will be villains and heroes and mythical creatures. We will create our own stories to share through writing, drawing, craftmaking, costumes, role-playing and much more. By the end of this short week you will have mastered the use of the magic wand, pixie dust and mysterious spells! On Wednesday, we will take a field trip to Wild Rumpus bookstore for story time, and then ice cream at Sebastian Joe’s around the corner! CAMPING WEEK: JULY 7-11 This week is for those adventurous spirits! The fun starts on campus where we will make handy camping trinkets and learn how to set up camp! We will go on exciting scavenger hunts and hikes, create outdoorsy keepsakes and play fun outdoor games! On Friday we will take a day trip to a state park where we will enjoy the great outdoors and make S’Mores over a campfire! WILD WEST HORSE WEEK: JULY 14-18 This week is dedicated to those who feel an affinity with horses. We will start out the week learning all about horses and their care. While we do not have horses on campus for the first three days of camp, we will do all sorts of fun western and horse related activities and crafts! On Thursday, we will have an opportunity to ride horses right on campus! On Friday, we will take a trip to a horse stable where we will ride and get some hands-on experience with horses and later take a break for S’Mores by the campfire. This week is a relaxed and safe way to get to know horses! SUMMER CELEBRATION: JULY 21-25 Join us for a fun-filled week of sun and water games! We will celebrate the heat with water balloons, water relays, and much more! We will make boats and other water related crafts. We will make an awesome water slide down the hill—fun that always ends in a big splash! On Friday we will take a trip to the Maplewood Community Center for a fun day in the pool! CRAZY ABOUT ART: JUNE 28-AUGUST 1 If you have a passion for art then this is the week for you! Sculpture, collage, painting and mosaic are some of the ways we will express ourselves. In addition to making awesome, fun and sometimes messy art, we will also learn about famous masterpieces from around the world and even in our own state! To top it all off, on Friday we will take an “Adventure into Art” with a visit from Abrakadoodle! SHARK WEEK @ MPA! AUGUST 4-8 If you are interested in these creatures of the deep, then you will
love this week at Panther Camp! We will not only find out more about these fascinating fish, but we will learn about other ocean dwelling critters! We will end our week with a field trip to the MN Zoo! Bring your sea legs and join us for a fin-tastic time!


CAMP INVENTION WE’RE BUILDING THE FUTURE ONE THINKER AT A TIME Led by local educators, the weeklong Camp Invention experience immerses elementary children in hands-on activities that reinvent summer fun. Throughout the week, children work in teams to solve real-world challenges. WHITE BEAR SAILING CLUB CLASSES Summer@MPA is pleased to partner with the White Bear Sailing School, offering students a safe and convenient way to participate in the exciting world of sailing! Our week-long beginner sailing classes are aimed to teach first- time sailors the basics skills needed to sail in a fun, safe, active and encouraging learning environment. Sailors will be learning on a boat called the Optimist. During each session, students will be taught the basic points of sail, how to rig and de-rig the boat, knot-tying and general seamanship. Other activities such as swimming and sailing games will take place during the week to keep things fun and exciting. On the first day of class, each student will need to pass a swim test of 20 ft (with a life vest on.). Please wear closed-toed shoes and clothes that can get wet. Students should also bring sunscreen, water and a change of clothes, if they want. Where: Students will meet at Mounds Park Academy at 9 AM to be transported to the White Bear Yacht Club for classes (56 Dellwood Ave • Dellwood, MN 55115). Students will return to Mounds Park Academy after class ends for pick up at 12 PM. Actual class time runs from 9:30 AM until 11:30 AM at White Bear Sailing School. When: Sailing classes will be offered (Monday through Thursday) during the weeks of June 9-12, 2014 and July 21-2, 2014. Limit 5 students per class week. Grades 1-6 Cost: $220 per class week

UPPER SCHOOL DIGITAL PAINTING DIGITAL ART - DRAWING AND PAINTING IN PHOTOSHOP 10:00 AM – 1:00 PM July 14-18 and July 21 (Final Critique Day) From concept art for movies and video games to book covers and illustrations for magazine articles, the world of the professional artist has become increasingly computer-driven. This class is a 6-day introduction into drawing-based digital art created in Photoshop. It will introduce students to drawing using graphics tablets, as well as introduce them to a variety of contemporary digital artists and illustrators, and finally give them a taste of professional world of the digital artist with real-world projects such as character design and editorial illustration. Students will be issued their very own (new) graphics tablet to keep and use during class and for future projects! Grades 9-12 Cost: $350.00


FEES AND POLICIES (EXCLUDING PANTHER CAMP) TUITION AND REGISTRATION A completed application for each child with full payment is necessary to process registrations for all programs. ENRICHMENT CLASSES 2014 Enrichment Classes run during the weeks of June 16-20, June 23-27 and August 11-15. Classes take place from 9:00 AM until 4:00 PM. . Each class runs for 90 minutes, with a 10 minute break in between. Two classes are offered in the AM, and two in the PM, with a break for lunch and recess at 12:10. If your child is joining us for the AM session only, please make sure to pick up your child promptly by 12:15. You must register for the full week. Tuition during these three weeks is $90.00 per class, or $300 for all day (4 classes). All registrations should be completed at least one week prior to the start of the week of service. For MS Adventure Week: MS Adventure week runs from 9:00 AM until 4:00 PM Monday through Friday. You must register for the full week. Cost for the full week is $550.00. There are no refunds for Summer@MPA programs if you withdraw less than one week prior to start of service. Please contact Kirsten Mulraney to withdraw any registration. CANCELLATION POLICY If a class must be canceled due to low enrollment, a full refund will be offered. No refunds will be given due to student absences. No refunds will be given for lost days due to unforeseen acts of nature or environment. We will notify students if Mounds Park Academy must close during class times for one of these reasons. PHOTOGRAPHS Mounds Park Academy reserves the right to use photographs of your child participating in Summer@MPA activites. You may notify us in writing if you do not want your child photographed. LUNCH DURING ALL PROGRAMS Please provide a bag lunch for your child. MPA will provide milk. We can refrigerate lunches if need be— please be sure to let a teacher know if this is necessary. You may send extra food for snacks. OUTDOOR PLAY Please dress your child accordingly for outdoor play. We will follow hot weather safety precautions by limiting time outside and offering water breaks. Please make sure to apply sunblock before arrival, or send sunblock with your child for application as needed. Please send a water bottle with children participating on outdoor sports.


REQUIRED SIGN OUT PROCEDURE Please indicate on the registration form those authorized to pick up your child at the end of the day. We will only release your child to these persons, unless notified by you in writing. Any authorized adult must have available proper identification and may be checked by MPA staff. An authorized adult is any person 16 years or older, listed on the registration, or a person granted permission in writing with a parent/guardian signature and date present. Emails are permitted. Phone calls/verbal permission will not be accepted. All children must be signed out by an authorized adult. The sign out sheet will be located in the main hallway, and a staff person will be available to instruct parents and guardians. TRANSPORTATION Mounds Park Academy requires written permission from the parent/guardian to transport the child off campus for field trips. Information about field trips and permission forms disclosing the mode of transportation are distributed on Monday before the enrichment week or earlier.
