Mounds Park Academy | 2012–2013 Annual Report

The 2012–2013 school year was a period of transition. Quiet changes, visible changes, a search process, and one major victory: an Annual Fund goal, reached. Your support of the Annual Fund ensures the success of our school and we are inspired by your deep and profound commitment to achieving educational excellence for our students. As MPA steps bravely into a new and inspiring chapter, each and every day is made possible by your incredible generosity. Students learn, teachers teach, and MPA continues to be the joyful and innovative place that it has been from the very beginning.

ALL BECAUSE OF YOU.

MPA ANNUAL FUND 2012– 2013 Moving forward during a time of change can be difficult, and fundraising during such a time can be especially challenging. MPA parents Chris and Jeanine Jesmer suspected this when they took on the role of Annual Fund Co-Chairs. As parents of an 8th grader, they were used to a challenge. The 20122013 Annual Fund’s success is due to their exceptional leadership and never-ending commitment to Mounds Park Academy. Whenever asked they stepped forward— signing letters, making calls and sending thank you notes, with grace and and welcomed humor the entire way. Their joy and enthusiasm was infectious and was responsible for, with the support of the Board of Trustees, Development Committee, and loyal Annual Fund volunteers, a nearly 60% increase in members of the Head’s Circle. Many, many thanks to Chris and Jeanine for a fantastic job!

my favorite thing about mpa is getting to do art. because some schools don’t have lots of art. but we can use paint and clay and drums and orff instruments and costumes and just go wild with art. i love it.

ALL BECAUSE OF YOU. On behalf of the students and staff of Mounds Park Academy, let me express my profound gratitude for your generosity over the course of the last academic year. While this is my first year at MPA, I deeply appreciate your support. The title of this year’s annual report, “All Because of You,” is more than a theme. It describes the reality that our school’s mission and vitality is due to your ongoing generosity. Because of you, we are able to retain and attract an outstanding faculty who inspire a life-long passion for learning, awaken curiosity and empower imagination. Because of you, we are able to create classrooms that engage our children, inspire their learning and guide them to new discoveries. Because of you, we are able to nurture character development with an inclusive worldview so our students can shape the world around them. Because of you, we are able to spark the imagination and foster innovation through technology and design thinking to realize student’s own power to know and create. Your support has strengthened Mounds Park Academy in its mission to provide awe-inspiring and transformative education … all because of you. Thank you,

Dr. Jeff Suzik Head of School Mounds Park Academy

MALONE SCHOLARS In 2012 Mounds Park Academy was recognized as a Malone Scholar School and has

partnered with the Malone Family Foundation to create the MPA Malone Scholars program. Malone Scholars are gifted students who demonstrate the following characteristics: • Malone Scholars are high achievers (generally top 5% of their class). • Malone Scholars are highly involved and independent learners. • Malone Scholars are effective communicators. • Malone Scholars act with respect and integrity. In addition to providing tuition for an MPA education, the Malone Scholarship supports funding for books, transportation, lunch and other expenses as needed. In the 2013–2014 school year, our MPA community was enriched by our four Malone Scholars in grades 7 through 10. These students are well on their way to achieving the vision of John Malone. Congratulations to our Malone Scholars!

ALL BECAUSE OF YOU. This phrase feels especially important when I think of Mounds Park Academy and the reasons my husband Gregg and I chose—and continue to choose—MPA for our family. Because of the exceptional faculty, our children have the foundation to explore and succeed. Because of the involved and creative families at MPA, our children have grown up among families where the joy of learning is valued and celebrated. Because of the benefits of PreK–12 under one roof, our kids have been encouraged by older role models to try new things and take advantage of the wide variety of opportunities at MPA, all while feeling safe and supported by teachers and friends. Because of all these things, we continue to choose MPA as the best place to educate our children. And like many of you, we continue to support MPA as best we can through charitable giving. MPA’s continued success is truly all because of you. Because of the hundreds of donors who are represented in this report; because of our alumni who are out in the world representing the value of an MPA education; and because of the involved and caring parents who put their trust in our exceptional faculty; because of every one of you, MPA continues to offer an innovative learning environment. Thank you – for all you do to support Mounds Park Academy, every day and every way.

BREAKTHROUGH TWIN CITIES 2013 was a year of significant change for Breakthrough – beginning with the name change from Breakthrough Saint Paul to Breakthrough Twin Cities (BTC), which signifies the organization’s ambitions to serve more students throughout the metro area over the course of the next several years. BTC also added key new staff members, became a fully independent 501(c)(3), and was fortunate to secure Social Venture Partnership funding through a new corporate partnership with Lube-Tech. Student outcomes continue to be strong for the program:

•100% of BTC alumni received admission to multiple colleges and universities. •BTC alumni have accepted full scholarships to Williams College, Tufts, St. Catherine University, Stanford, St. Thomas University, Carleton, Mount Holyoke, and Saint Paul College. •Students in the class of 2013 were awarded two Gates Millennium Scholarships, one   Wallin Scholarship, one Dell Scholarship, two Multicultural Excellence Program (MEP)     Scholarships, one Jack Kent Cooke Scholarship, one full scholarship to Williams College,   and one full scholarship to Stanford University. •The average annual scholarship for BTC alumni is over $26,000. •91% of BTC high school students enrolled in at least one honors class per academic term. •BTC middle school students were in attendance 98% of the time during the 2013 summer program. •75% of aspiring teacher interns who have completed college entered careers in the field of education.

Most notably, however, was the fact that the summer of 2013 marked the first time that a Breakthrough student became a Breakthrough aspiring teacher. In fact, four Breakthrough alumni students served as aspiring teacher interns during the busy summer program held at Mounds Park Academy. One of those aspiring teachers was Denise Quintanilla, a 2012 Breakthrough graduate currently attending the University of Minnesota with a major in neuroscience. Denise was part of the science faculty, and it turns out that she was assigned to teach her class in Mr. Schweiger and Ms. Nagle’s science lab, which she described as the room where she “fell in love with science.” Denise noted that the classroom gave her access to space and equipment that she had never seen before joining Breakthrough and that exposure made the difference in her desire to go into the sciences as a college student. Denise’s story illustrates the tremendous difference that the MPA community is making in the lives of our greater community’s children. The BTC staff and Board of Directors are grateful for the generous way in which spaces and resources are shared with its students and aspiring teachers. Thank you for an amazing year!
