Easement Reel Our state of the art, purpose built Easement Reel compliments our extensive drain cleaning capabilities. The versatile self propelled, skid steer unit can be remotely set up from the Hydro-jet or Combination Jet-Vac units in restricted areas not accessible with the large trucks from the roadway. The easement reel will fit through small openings of 1 metre wide or greater between buildings, driveways and fences.

Pipe Relining Rehabilitation This technology enables pipes to be repaired internally using an “in-situ” relining system without the need for excavation (in most circumstances). The liner system is fully approved for use in sewer drains by Water Authorities. It can be used in pipes from 100 to 225mm in diameter. Ambient Cured In Place lining can also be used in storm water pipes, pump suction and discharge lines, irrigation pipes, conduits, stacks and downpipes.

Pipe & Cable Location/ Leak Detection APMS has expanded our range of equipment to incorporate state of the art, radio-detection pipe, cable and leak detection. Welcome to the Nov, Dec issue of Plumbing SA. In this and subsequent issues we will review initiatives and activities undertaken by the Plumbing Industry of SA Inc. We will bring to your attention the changes taking place in the industry and what we are doing about it.

We are in the grip of a significant drought and we all need to do our bit to save water. The PIA has introduced an ecosmart environmentally sustainable training program. To date 60 plumbers have completed the training and similar numbers are expected to undertake the training this financial year. The program is sponsored in part by SA Water and we are working collaboratively together to develop other water saving initiatives.

This program is due to be launched by the Minister very soon.

SA Water have also agreed to keep plumbers updated by contributing to Plumbing SA. New requirements, current information and a range of other issues will be addressed as a result. We are very thankful for this commitment to the industry. Our magazine will continue to educate and inform plumbers about new products and what is happening within the industry and will provide content specifically aimed at the commercial and industrial and the residential markets, in both installation and maintenance. Here we seek our members input for issues you want addressed.

The recent decision by the PIA to enter apprentice group training is now underway. Anna Montebello has been appointed to manage this new initiative and will be contacting host employers and potential apprentices in the coming weeks and months. Anna has had extensive experience with training and has a passion for developing young people.

In order to better manage our member information and streamline our ability to communicate with our membership we

are installing a new membership data base. This will have the ability to track our communications, record training and address a range of shortcomings that exist in our current system.

We are working with TAFE in both roof plumbing and sanitary plumbing to deliver the best possible training and flexibility for employers and apprentices as a result of significant changes to the way apprentices are trained. The results of this may not be evident for some time as all of us adapt to the new requirements.

Our website was in need of attention and we have added several new features and updated the information. In the members area we now have links to current OHS&W legislation, including the Act and the Regulations. We will have a link to our eco smart plumber training website available soon and this will contain a link to SA Water’s website for both plumbers and the public. We will have the ability for the public to search for eco smart plumbers on the PIA website.

Other services we have been working on include the PIA OHS&W system which is almost complete and will be available for members very shortly. Likewise, when members require workplace agreements we can arrange this as needed.

We have to maintain our RTO status to deliver the green card training and this in itself has been a huge amount of work.

We are awaiting our final audit for this RTO status. A recent development in our training area has been the introduction of a course on thermostatic mixing valves. As soon as it is finalised we will be inviting plumbers to undertake this training which will become very important in the near future.

NEW PRODUCTS New Rheem solar hot water system

utilises two or more pumps, temperature sensors and controls.

A building management system interface is also included making trouble-shooting simple.

Rheem has introduced the Premier Loline Solar Water Heater, an indirect, gasboosted solar system that meets the requirements of government building regulations. It consists of a ground mounted tank with solar panel(s) located on the roof and was designed specifically for use in environments including areas prone to frost.

The new range also includes the Multipak staged supply system that is ideal for intermittent use such as sporting clubs. The system includes up to six instantaneous gas water heaters.

Ignition of each water heater is staged in response to flow demands, only heating the water as it is required, reducing energy consumption.

The Commpak systems are all pre-engineered and assembled

by Rheem prior to delivery. The systems can be installed by a plumber and electrician who simply need to connect it to the water and gas lines, and the power supply.

Rather than directly heating water by passing it through the collectors, special heat exchange anti-freeze fluid is pumped through the collectors to capture the sun’s energy and prevent freezing in the collectors. Additional protection is provided by the systems ‘drain-back’ design. When heating is complete or during periods of frost the fluid drains back into the tank providing total frost protection to -17°C. This design also prevents any possibility of undesirable wet stagnation.

The Premier Loline has a vitreous enamel-lined tank which is durable for all water conditions found in Australia.

The unit can be ordered as an integrated model, complete with 270 litre tank and a 26 litre five star instantaneous gas booster attached or separately to be installed as a remote tank and booster arrangement.

Rheem Commpak delivers turn-key hot water Rheem’s commercial division has launched the new Commpak gas instantaneous hot water system range that delivers continuous hot water for a variety of applications like hotels, apartments, hospitals and sporting clubs.

Why would a plumber be interested in food scraps?

A lot of people wrongly think that a plumber is one of those blokes who travels around in a ute with his blue heeler, tools and a coil of copper pipe in the back. Apart from charging like wounded bulls, all they do is dig holes, change tap washers, install hot water services and stuff like that.

Well, as a licensed plumber myself since January 1975, I know that you blokes do a whole lot more than that for your customers. But there’s one thing that has me baffled and that is why a lot of plumbers, when they’re called out to a job that involves the kitchen sink, don’t recommend installing a food waste disposer or replacing an old one if it’s broken.

I know what you’re thinking, I’m not a salesman and most people don’t ask about them. Well, my experience with IN-SINKERATOR has changed my view forever. State of OHS in Construction National Statistics It is estimated that the cost to the Australian economy of work-related injury and illness in one year is $34.3 billion.

Every year: • Over 300 Australians die from work-related injuries and significantly more from work related disease • 120,000 Australians are injured badly enough to lose one week or more of work • 20,000 Australians are compensated for diseases caused by their work • Someone will be injured seriously enough to lodge a workers’ compensation claim every four minutes.

Industry Statistics In 2003-04: • 52 people (employees and self-employed) were killed in work-related accidents.

• 32 injury and illness deaths were compensated • The most common causes of compensated fatality were long-term • exposure to asbestos (6 fatalities) and falls from height (6 fatalities) • Over 14,000 employees needed a week or more off work because of a work-related injury or illness • The construction industry had the third highest incidence rate of 29 claims per 1,000 employees, nearly double that for all industries (16 claims per 1000 employees) • The most common causes of compensated injury were muscular stress while lifting or handling objects (30% of claims); falls on the same level (12%) and falls from height (10%) • The Construction industry employed 777,000 people, representing 8% of the Australian workforce.

Commercial Plumbing The Commonwealth Law Courts – Plumbing Poses a Special Challenge Project Manager Les Gebauer said Hansen Yuncken put forward and achieved about $2.5m of cost savings at tender time. These were incorporated into the project, while a review of roof access systems resulted in savings of about $100k.

Les said, “There were a number of end user procurement requests incorporated into the project, including $3.5m of court technology works.

“Hansen Yuncken changed the method of structural system construction to eliminate propping to two floors, thus enabling the earlier commencement of electrical, plumbing and mechanical services.

“The use of hanging scaffolding for the installation of the copper cladding, on the western end of the building, in lieu of traditional scaffolding, saved a further $100k.”

Most of the facade is curtain wall of 1100 panels, 900 of which are different to each other.

A feature of the design is that in the public areas, there is always access to an exterior view and natural light. All court rooms incorporate windows, something not typical to modern day court buildings The interior design achieves spectacular effect with court levels adjacent to two atria and 26m high column spans through one of the atria. On the practical side, the building has up to date smart technology, including a Clipsal C-Bus lighting control systems, solar hot water and photovoltaic cells.

Rainwater is recycled for toilet flushing and wetting pads are utilised in the central plant room to lower the air temperature to the chillers. This effectively reduces power consumption.

Special requirements in the Law Courts design presented challenges for plumbing contractor, Smith Brothers Plumbing.

Smith Brothers is one of a few companies with the resources and ability to handle a development of this size and complexity.

The experienced team led by Construction Manager, David Hurst excelled in information flow, managing site building works, co-ordinating labour and ensuring materials were available on-time. Smith Brothers were responsible for the hydraulic services package including stormwater, sewer drainage, trade waste, hot and cold domestic water. Major plant and equipment installed included solar gas boosted hot water plant, stormwater and sewer pump stations and rainwater holding tanks.

Other areas of interest included the major investment in reclaimed water and energy efficient measures. The design complies with Commonwealth and South Australian heritage requirements, as well as meeting the Commonwealth’s environmentally sustainable development objectives, to ensure the building’s energy and water use footprint is as small as possible.

Solar panels on the roof support the gas - boosted hot water plant. Massive infrastructure is in place to collect rainwater in the basement storage system which is then pumped up to flush toilets. The building’s structural engineering posed a challenge for Smith Brothers, as much of the drainage and plumbing are cast into concrete beams.

There was also a particular focus in the design on minimising service noise ie sound proofing and reduction in noise transmission within the building. Whereas PVC piping would

It was really rewarding to see quality bathroom renovations entered in the recent Plumbing Industry Awards and recognition by their clients that this work should be done by a plumber.

Bathroom Renovation is a significant component of work for many of the PIA’s smaller plumber members. The quality of bathroom renovation work is unfortunately all too frequently compromised by unlicensed people undertaking the work without the knowledge, skill and expertise of our members.

Frog Plumbing’s, Warren Hall had a challenging project converting an old bedroom into a luxury bathroom, Frog Plumbing have included Green Tap ware, a Sanity Opal 2000 spa bath and heated towel rails to create a contemporary design which reflects the clients personal taste and their desire for space and light.

The second task was to transform the existing bathroom and separate toilet into a single shower and toilet facility with space for laundry appliances.

Style and functionality are the hallmarks of Frog Plumbing success in this challenging renovation.

The Key to new business Key Plumbing’s Brenton Key, a non member, enrolled to undertake the Eco Smart Plumber Training Course. As a result his company has now joined the PIA and is planning to take out an Eco Smart Plumbing Licence because he can see the benefits of PIA membership and the huge potential for sustainable plumbing, as water shortages become a major issue for the world.

Key Plumbing was engaged to undertake the plumbing for a new office warehouse project in Edwardstown. The architect in order to accommodate stormwater detention tanks within limited space had designed the building with the detention tanks suspended under the eaves. 3600 litres of stormwater from the roof needed to be detained and the steel support structure for the tanks would have added a significant cost to the project.

Brenton immediately saw a cheaper and more effective solution for the warehouse project when he attended the July Eco Smart Product Day. Freewater manufacture a slimline modular tank system which has been designed not just for rainwater storage but also as a detention system.

Brenton advised the builder of this option and he approved its use as a cost effective alternative. The width of the driveway and the area at the rear of the warehouse were too limited to locate conventional tanks outside. Sixteen modular tanks were installed against the wall of the warehouse between two steel columns and they only encroach a few centimetres into the warehouse floor space, eliminating the problem of lost valuable floor area. The detention system bleeds the water from the tanks through two 20mm pipes from the base at each end of the tanks. Overflows at the top of the tanks release the water if the tanks reach full capacity.

The appearance of “milky” water often occurs when dissolved air is trapped in hot water and is suddenly released when a hot tap is turned on. As hot water flows into a container, the trapped air is quickly released in bubble form and quite often results in the water having a “milky” appearance.

The water will rapidly clear as the air comes to the surface and dissipates after a minute of two without affecting the quality of the water. In particular, the appearance of “milky” water often creates concern with consumers when a low pressure vented water heater is replaced with a mains pressure water heater.

In the case of a low-pressure vented water heater, the air that has been trapped in the water supply is released from the hot water storage through the water heater’s expansion vent.

Therefore, when a hot tap is turned on with this type of water heater there is no visible sign of trapped air within the system.

The appearance of “milky” water is common with mains pressure water heaters, although under certain operating conditions and variations in mains water pressure it can vary from suburb to suburb and often, from house to house in the same location.

Our focus is to launch Group Training and to liaise with the industry, apprentices and TAFE to ensure continuous improvement of service so that South Australia develops the best professionals for the future of the industry.

PIA Group Training has implemented a minimum standard of service which will be the base from which we negotiate and build service agreements to meet the needs of individual host employers and we guarantee that the negotiated measurable outcomes will be met.

Apprentices will be of the highest calibre, selected from the best applicants through a rigorous assessment and interview process. Support of host employers and apprentices for successful placements will include regular and frequent monitoring visits, mentoring, guidance and counselling for apprentices.

To assist host employers with flexibility in relation to duration and timing of placements, and to ensure that apprentices develop to their maximum potential, our apprentices will be placed on a rotation system, either within one business if all aspects of plumbing are available or in other businesses that offer the types of work.

Hourly rates will be comparable to the market place and we will be managing all payroll functions. Host employers will need to only manage a single invoice for the pay period. We will work with you to ensure administration tasks are simplified.

The Rainwater Tank Plumbing Rebate Scheme What does this mean for Plumbers?

Backflow Prevention Solutions

In June 2006 the Premier announced the introduction of a Rainwater Tank Plumbing Rebate Scheme effective of 1st July 2006 in order to encourage the community to become more water efficient.

•

This scheme is being administered by SA Water on behalf of the Government.

The rebate, capped at $400.00 per property will apply to the following; •

Your property has not had a significant additional extension constructed (additional roof size over 50m2 ) from1 July 2006 or was newly constructed from 1 July 2006. (These cases are subject to a separate building requirement from 1 July 2006 that installation and connection of a rainwater tank is mandatory for which no rebate applies)

•

The rebate will cover the plumbing work only and not the cost of the tank. The rainwater tank must be connected to at least one of the following; Toilet cistern, all laundry cold water outlets or hot water service.

•

The rainwater tank must have a capacity of 1000L or greater.

•

Automatic switching device between rainwater and any mains water or other appropriate supply

•

Appropriate backflow prevention device installed.

•

All pipework and outlets to be appropriately signed and marked.

Applications will also be subject to a site inspection to ensure all plumbing requirements/standards have been met.

Test Gauge Kit for Backflow Prevention

The test kits used for backflow prevention valve testing are “precision instruments” and need to be treated with the appropriate care. They need to be sent away every 12 months for testing and certifying, ask your merchant supplier for details of local test/certify facilities. SA Water does audit test kits for current calibration/certification.

Australian Standard states “ Test equipment used for the field testing of backflow prevention devices shall be annually calibrated and certified by a registered laboratory”.

Everyone is aware after having completed their backflow prevention training that the valves “ have the relief drain outlet located not less than 300 mm above the surrounding surface”.

Even numbered properties can use sprinklers only on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. Odd numbered properties can use sprinklers only on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays.

No sprinklers to be used between 8am and 8pm on any day. .

A fountain or pond that does not recycle water must not be operated and must not be topped up unless it supports fish. These fountains or ponds may only be topped up with water from a hand held hose or bucket and they must not be emptied and refilled.

Existing pools and spas must not be emptied nor refilled from empty.

Permits from SA Water are required to fill new pools or spas. A permit will not be granted unless there is proof a cover has been purchased to prevent water loss through evaporation.

•

Water must not be used to wash a vehicle except by means of a commercial car wash, or a bucket filled directly from a tap. A hand held hose fitted with a trigger nozzle or a high pressure low volume water cleaner may be used for rinsing.

History of Plumbing Part Four The Emergence of the Modern ‘Necessary’ The first patent for a “modern” toilet belongs to Alexander Cumming, who invented the “S” trap in 1775. It had a sliding valve underneath to hold the water. Three years later, Joseph Bramah, a locksmith and engineer, patented an improved version with two hinged valves. An original “Bramah” is still used in the House of Lords.

The Good Life: In 1848, England passed the national Public Health Act, which would become a model plumbing code for the world to follow. It mandated some kind of sanitary arrangement in every house, whether a flushing toilet, a privy, or an ash pit. The government also released 5 million British pounds for sanitary research and engineering, and began to build a sound sewer system.

With this new incentive for invention, pottery makers including Josiah Wedgwood, Thomas Twyford, and John Shanks began to team with the inventors as they replaced brass and metal workings of Bramah’s invention with all ceramic parts.

George Jennings popularised public lavatories in 1851. He introduced the novelties by installing them in the Crystal Palace for the Great Exhibition; over 827,000 people paid to use the “necessary convenience.”

By 1870, Thomas Twyford’s improved version of the Bramah contained no metal parts, and Bramah ceased production. And, although Jennings’ pedestal vase toilet of 1884 won the Gold Medal at the Health Exhibition, it was Twyford who is credited with the revolutionary design of a one-piece toilet.

Prior to 1885 a toilet was built in two parts: the top part a bowl, and the bottom half holding a separate pan, the entire unit had to be contained within a wooden box. The box would leak at the joints and the smell would be terrible.

In 1885, Twyford pioneered the first trapless toilet and built the “Unites” as a one-piece, free-standing unit on a pedestal base.

This eliminated the problem of leaky joints and foul odours.

Tests for quality control were very basic: Jennings, whose toilet was judged “as perfect a sanitary closet as can be made,” tested his unit by throwing in 10 small apples, one flat sponge and four pieces of paper. If the items cleared, the unit was pronounced fit.

Acceptance of water closets came slowly at first. But as closets became better made, and as proper connection eliminated disease, production grew. Sporadic cases of typhoid still continued in the second half of the 19th century. One of the most notable cases was the death of Queen Victoria’s husband, Prince Albert, who died of typhoid in 1861, as almost did her son, the future Edward VII, in 1871.

The Prince of Wales lost his groom, a friend, and almost his life to an outbreak of typhoid at a lodge where he and his friends were staying. Investigations proved contamination in the plumbing lines.

The 19th-century sanitary engineer had brought sanitation almost full cycle from the days of King Minos. In tribute, the Prince would be quoted as saying, “If I could not be a prince, I would rather be a plumber.”

Incident Report Report of fire incident in South Australia 16/06/2006 Brief Overview: On 16 June 2006, at a multi-storey redevelopment a fire broke out in a ground floor storage room used by a fire systems company to store their equipment. The fire was the result of plumbing work being carried out just below this room, which was previously a toilet and shower facility. The result of the fire was a full evacuation of the building workers on the site that day, with the MFS attending the site and the closure of nearby streets. Two employees of a plumbing company undertaking the work received minor heat flash burns as a result of the flash back down the copper pipe.

The findings of the investigation has found that: • The fire origin was from the basement below the storeroom.

• The fire spread through the storage room in the floor above the source.

• The ignition source for the fire was heat from the oxy cutting flame.

• The fuel that was ignited was in all probability residual sewer gas still in the pipe work.

• Sewer Gas combined with oxygen to create an explosive mixture.

• The two gases potentially with one at ground and the other

•

at ceiling level may have created the ignition source and flash back through the pipe work.

The mixture of the two gases ignited and spread the fire into the upper storeroom through a short section of copper pipe with the contents of the storeroom igniting and the fire then spreading throughout the room.

Conclusion The investigation concluded that the fire was accidental, however with some operational deficiencies being evident. The investigation found that there were some deficiencies in the procedures in the cutting of the pipe work, these deficiencies were: • The lack of a proper Hazard Identification/Risk Control of the work being conducted by the plumber • The non-venting of the pipe work prior to any oxy cutting being carried out • Not checking with other persons on any possible risks that may be evident • The consideration on what they were doing at the time, as the removal of the old copper pipe work in the redevelopment may be considered as being demolition work and not construction work and therefore the risks associated are greater The investigation has concluded that the fire was accidental, however the issues above have been discussed with the plumbing contractor.

Plumbing Industry Matters JB’S Corner So, you’ve finished Trade School, passed all of your exams and been issued with all the appropriate licences to pursue your trade as a plumber/plumbing contractor. The occasional read of an industry magazine will keep you up to speed with all the latest trends and materials. Will it? Never in human history has change been so rapid and pervasive!

Due to the increasing pressures on our water resources change is being forced upon us whether we like it or not! The plumber with all the smarts about water conservation will be a lap in front of the field when water becomes too expensive to use willy-nilly and the restrictions on its use become extremely onerous.

China and to a lesser extent India, are having a larger and larger influence on the plumber’s everyday life. Through their insatiable demands for raw materials and the advancement of their manufacturing industries, the price of copper and copper by products have risen to the point where I doubt that there is a plumbing contractor that hasn’t looked for an alternative to keep pricing to a more acceptable level.

As to manufacturing, it seems that not a day goes by without another manufacturer availing themselves of the Chinese labour market “offshore” and upping stumps to set up in Asia. Our major sanitary and tapware manufacturers are already sourcing most of their supplies offshore and already we are starting to experience some silly hiccups. Quite simply, on the world stage, Australia does not loom large representing just 1-2% of the world market. Quality control is another issue again.

As if the afore mentioned items aren’t daunting enough, we also have an ever increasing supply of new product and technologies hitting the market. There’s also a lot you don’t see that has been weeded out by merchants as unsaleable.

So back to Trade School and licensing. Our initial schooling can only teach us the basics and unless we keep abreast of the times we will be left behind in the skill stakes. Is there a need for a brief “refresher” course say every five years for licences to bring them up to speed on the latest advances and regulations?

If we don’t address these issues I feel there will be even more dilution of our trade.

In the meantime, if and whilst we debate the above issues, we can avail ourselves of the many courses and seminars such as Eco Smart Plumber which are run by the PIA and the TAFE School of Plumbing.

Drainlayer’s licences. So what’s new?

There has been a drainlayer’s license for over twenty-five years.

There is a drainlayer’s pay rate classification in the federal award. The PIA lists both ‘registered drainers’ and ‘drainers’ on their award wage rate sheet. The drainlayers license has only been omitted within the last 12 months.

Currently registered with OCBA are 80 restricted plumbing workers who are able to perform and certify drainage work licenses that can provide technical direction and are able to certify limited to draining work and 17 restricted plumbing workers limited to performing drainage work under technical

direction licenses. To my knowledge, these drainers have not brought the plumbing industry to its knees, so why now have the goal posts moved?

It is my understanding that the proposal is not to hand out drainlayers licences from a ‘weetbix’ box, but to train them through a certificate 2 course in drainage that already exists (BCP20103). Criteria available from OCBA and TAFE. TAFE SA already has the capacity to run this course. This licence will only be to work for a licensed plumber. The plumber who signs the notice will be responsible for the work performed.

I believe there is a demand for drainlayers as do other businesses in my position. This would not compromise the quality of plumbing and drainlaying but enhance it, as drainlayers would only be doing drainlaying and be very competent in it. This is not to say plumbers cannot do drainlaying, but very few would choose drainlaying or operate machinery on a full-time basis.

Not all plumbers want to outlay the expense of trucks and machines. Not all plumbers or plumbing firms want to be ‘all-rounders’. Most specialise in a particular area be that maintenance, new housing, or commercial.

Of the ten plumbing apprentices my company trains, not one of them wants to lay drains when they complete their apprenticeship, however drainage is an essential and full-time part of my business and I cannot find licensed plumbers who want to do this work.

I would like to thank the PIA for allowing and encouraging me to have my say as I know their position to date, that they have been ‘vehemently opposed’ to this licence, a position I cannot understand and is not 100% supported by the industry.

We must consider there are many different types of plumbing businesses operating, all with their own needs, but I believe healthier discussion is required as this borders on a restraint of trade. There are many other points for and against, but space restriction prevents me from elaborating.

Editor’s Comment Plumbing licensing training packages are currently being reviewed nationally. Decisions related to licensing and training of plumbers and drainlayers are being reviewed by various national bodies including the National Plumbing Regulator’s Forum (NPRF), Plumbing Occupation Action Group (POAG) and the Council of Australian Governments (COAG).

Until there are outcomes from this process there is too much uncertainty in the industry about licensing, qualifications and skill sets. When these outcomes are known, it will affect the plumbing industry as a whole. The PIA and other state plumbing associations support the view that Certificate III in plumbing is the base qualification for plumbers.

Changes affecting the Government’s financial incentive for home owners installing solar hot water As a result of the Federal Government’s commitment to reduce Greenhouse Gas Emissions (GGEs), home owners who install a solar water heater are being offered a financial benefit. The Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) program enables home owners to get cash back by trading RECs after a solar water heater (SWH) or Heat Pump has been installed.

Previously, customers upgrading from electrically powered water heaters were eligible to create RECs. This program, operating successfully since 2001, has recently been expanded to include the replacement of any water heater with a new solar water heater. Now, eligible solar water heater installations installed on or after 11 September, 2006 will receive the full value of the RECs. RECs fluctuate in price but are currently $16 each (October 2006). A rebate of between $200-$800 per hot water service can be paid to your customer depending on location and other factors which determine the RECs. Contact your solar hot water or heat pump manufacturer for further information to assist your customers.

Water Borne Diseases Diarrhoea Diarrhoea occurs world-wide and causes 4% of all deaths and 5% of health loss to disability. It is most commonly caused by gastrointestinal infections which kill around 2.2 million people, mostly children in developing countries. The use of water in hygiene is an important preventive measure but contaminated water is also an important cause of diarrhoea. Cholera and dysentery cause severe, sometimes life threatening forms of diarrhoea.

Diarrhoea can also spread from person to person, aggravated by poor personal hygiene. Food is another major cause of diarrhoea when it is prepared or stored in unhygienic conditions. Water can contaminate food during irrigation, and fish and seafood from polluted water may also contribute to the disease

The disease and how it affects people

The infectious agents that cause diarrhoea are present or are sporadically introduced throughout the world. Diarrhoea is a rare occurrence for most people who live in developed countries where sanitation is widely available, access to safe water is high and personal and domestic hygiene is relatively good. Worldwide around 1.1 billion people lack access to improved water sources and 2.4 billion have no basic sanitation. Diarrhoea due to infection is widespread throughout the developing world.

Diarrhoea is the passage of loose or liquid stools more frequently than is normal for the individual. It is primarily a symptom of gastrointestinal infection. Depending on the type of infection, the diarrhoea may be watery (for example in cholera) or passed with blood (in dysentery for example).

Diarrhoea due to infection may last a few days, or several weeks, as in persistent diarrhoea. Severe diarrhoea may be life threatening due to fluid loss, particularly in infants and young children, the malnourished and people with impaired immunity.

The impact of repeated or persistent diarrhoea on nutrition and the effect of malnutrition on susceptibility to infectious diarrhoea can be linked in a vicious cycle amongst children, especially in developing countries.

Diarrhoea is also associated with other infections such as malaria and measles. Chemical irritation of the gut or noninfectious bowel disease can also result in diarrhoea.

The cause Diarrhoea is a symptom of infection caused by a host of bacterial, viral and parasitic organisms most of which can be spread by contaminated water. It is more common when there is a shortage of clean water for drinking, cooking and cleaning.

Water contaminated with human faeces for example from municipal sewage, septic tanks and latrines is of special concern. Animal faeces also contain microorganisms that can cause diarrhoea.

Distribution

Interventions Key measures to reduce the number of cases of diarrhoea include: • Access to safe drinking water.

• Improved sanitation.

• Good personal and food hygiene.

• Health education about how infections spread.

Key measures to treat diarrhoea include: • Giving more fluids than usual.

• Continue feeding.

• Consulting a health worker if there are signs of dehydration or other problems.

Once again it needs to be noted that the importance of clean water and good sanitation are critical for the well being of our society. It is vital that government and the plumbing industry maintains the highest standards for our protection.
