Legend of Lord Hanuman Lord Hanuman is the son of King Kesari and Queen Anjana. His mother was earlier an Apsara who was born on Earth as a Vanara Princess due to sage Durvasa’s curse.

The birth of her son Hanuman was instrumental in lifting the curse from Anjana.

Kesari and Anjana had performed an extreme penance asking for a child, and Hanuman was born from this boon.

Lord Hanuman is also known as the son of Vayu (God of the winds). There are numerous stories that recount the reason as to why Hanuman was also known as the son of Vayu (the God of Air), simultaneously known as Vayuputra.

There are almost three legends that come to talk about Vayu’s role in Hanuman’s life. In one such legend when King Dashrath was performing the Putrakarma Yagna for bearing sons, the King received some sweet rice as a blessing. He was asked to share the sweet rice with his three wives. As he was passing the bowl of sweet rice, suddenly a kite snatched a small part of this sweet rice/pudding and dropped it in Anjana’s outstretched palms. Anjana was praying to Lord Shiva at that point of time.

Another legend quotes that one day while roaming in the forests, Hanuman felt very hungry so he flew up to eat the Sun, thinking the Sun to be a fruit. He was hit by Indra and due to Indra’s Vajra, Hanuman dropped back on Earth dead with a broken jaw. Later Vayu stopped flowing, seeing his favorite disciple dead. Lack of air led to

the death of the Earth and then Lord Shiva intervened resuscitating Hanuman. His broken jaw was later modified in Kishkinda.

In another story, Hanuman was burnt to ashes by Sun’s heat and the rays of the Sun. It fell back on Earth. The fishes and other wildlife creatures collected his bones and ashes and gave it back to Kesari. Lord Shiva gave life back to Hanuman but they could not find his jawbone. Thus in Kishkinda they healed his face by transplanting it with a monkey’s face. At that point of time, Lord Vayu had played a very crucial role in collecting his ashes and his bones. Hence, he is known to be greatly favoured by the Lord of the Air element- Vayudev.

Now, Lord Hanuman was born on a Tuesday before the Sunrise. This muhurat is known as the Brahma Muhurta. Usually, his worshippers get up early and wear clean attire, worshipping Lord Hanuman with Kumkum (Sindoor or vermillion), some yellow sweets and yellow flowers. It is often believed that Lord Hanuman is a very big hearted soul. He is a Bal Brahmacharya and smearing him merely with Kumkum can make all your wishes come true.
