Head’s Words Did you know it can take 500 years for a disposable nappy to decompose? And that the average baby goes through 10,000 of them before they are potty trained?

No, me neither. This was just one of the many amazing facts that Year 5 and Mrs Potter shared with our school on Monday morning, as they launched our school’s campaign to achieve the prestigious Eco Green Flag award. It’s an award that empowers young power to make a difference, an award that helps break large, global issues like climate change into more manageable and directed themes – themes that help our children to consider envihow to seek support. Junior School Reflections This Wednesday marked our first junior assembly of 2024, and what a start it has been. Our juniors are determined to make every moment count as they seek to improve on their knowledge, skills and understanding across their school curriculum.

In our assembly this week, we discussed the notion of ‘growth mindset’ and how to develop and improve one’s attitude to how they approach school, life, and everything in-between. We are encouraging our pupils to adopt positive language when they are overcome with difficulties.

An example of this is changing their mindset when they encounter a problem from “I can’t do this”, towards saying “I can’t do this yet.” Another example is to persevere when frustrated, rather than giving up. These are small changes, but when added together will make a great difference. School is the best place to learn these concepts, and we are all here to learn together. Many of our junior pupils shared examples of times when they wanted to give up, but where they powered on through in order to succeed.

It all starts with the attitude and that is the foundation for which greater learning and progress is built on.

One of my all-time favourite speeches is John F. Kennedy’s in 1962 regarding the ‘why?’ aspect. I believe that the following statement is one that holds a lot of truth and something for us all to learn: “We choose to go to the moon in this decade and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard” The next time we encounter difficulty, let us all remember why we do these things. For the challenge, for the growth, and for that special feeling of breaking new ground that one has never broken before. This year is what we make of it, so let us make it an exciting one.

A great moment in the history of humanity is when humans were first able to land on the moon. Of course, this idea seemed preposterous at first, but it captured the public’s imagination.

Year 1 - Oliver Awesome work, Oliver! Mrs. Cheal is super impressive to hear that Oliver has been working super hard over Christmas by practising his reading and writing. He has made a huge improvement in both forming his sentences and handwriting.

Year 2 - Hattie

Year 3 - Verity

Very well done, Hattie! What a great week Hattie has had. She made a beautiful penguin in art, using paint and collage. She also worked well in a group on a science experiment on absorbency. Mrs. Cooper is thrilled and is very pleased with the great start Hattie has made to the new term. Great work.

Congratulations, Verity! Mr. Legg has chosen Verity for her brilliant work in a number of areas. Verity created an amazing presentation all about her favourite hobby - ice skating. She articulated her ideas clearly and is working hard to gain the Junior Duke award. She has also shone when developing her knowledge of inverted commas correctly and sparkled writing a fabulous dialogue.

Year 4 - Cormac Brilliant work, Cormac! Well done.

Cormac has been selected by Mr. Hutchings for his enthusiastic, positive, and excellent start to 2024. He has been contributing well to all lessons and has done a fantastic job of remembering and recalling key information from the previous term.

This is an important part of the learning process. Well done, Cormac!

Year 6 - Eva

Year 5 - Rosie Well done, Rosie! Congratulations for being Year 5’s star of the week. Rosie has been selected as Year 5’s star

by Mrs. Potter for her tireless work in helping her local environment. Rosie has been litter-picking in her free time and is determined to make a positive contribution to the planet. She has made a bright start to the new year and is making brilliant choices inside and outside of school every day. Well done, Rosie!

Congratulations, Eva! Mr. Babur is very proud of the start that Eva has made to 2024.

She was impressive in her music lesson earlier this week, especially by learning how to play the A minor and E minor guitar chords, which she picked up effortlessly. Eva has also been working hard in her English lessons, and she is continuing to make good improvements every week. Well done, Eva!

Reception class makes windsocks Well done Reception class for demonstrating excellent teamwork!

You worked so hard to make a windsock, which are now hanging beautifully in the Early Years garden, ready for us to observe which direction the wind is blowing!

Year 5 non-Newtonian Fluid Year 5 had a fantastic time learning all about non-Newtonian fluids by creating Ooblek! “Is it a liquid?; Is it a solid?” This puzzling substance made by mixing cornflour with water.

A non-Newtonian fluid is a fluid that does not follow Newton’s law of viscosity. What a great way to learn about material properties.

Year 3 - Saxon Villages Year 3 have been creating saxon villages as part of their history lessons with Mrs. Potter.

These rectangular huts made of wood with roofs thatched with straw were replicated using lollypop sticks and straw.

Senior School Mental health Workshops Yesterday both our pupils and staff benefitted from mental health awareness workshops. These were run by Satveer Nijjar from Attention Seekers?

The main takeaways from these sessions from our pupils included: "I learnt you should talk to anyone you trust"; "I learnt not to wait until crisis point"; "I learnt to always talk." Satveer aimed to de-stigmatise conversations around our mental health, how to spot the signs of a deterioration in our mental health, healthy and unhealthy coping mechanisms, and how to seek support. We hope that these workshops combined with the support we provide our pupils, will ensure that during trying times in their lives both now and in the future, they will indeed "rise again."

Reception - Sewing Reception class have been learning a new skill today...sewing! They all followed the instructions brilliantly and handled the needles with such care, stitching around the outside of their chosen sea creature and filling them with stuffing.

Exciting Eco-House developments from Year 7 Year 7 have continued to impress me. After the Public Enquiry resulted in the housing development getting the go ahead – much to the dismay of the Environmentalist, the students have been investigating how the development can be sustainable. They researched other sustainable cities and looked into various eco-features for the houses, producing some great designs.

The Law of Reflection - Y6 Science Year 6 have made a great start to their new science topic, where they have been studying the 'law of reflection'. They conducted a full scientific investigation by testing and measuring the angle of incidence and comparing it to the angle of reflection by using light boxes, transformers, and mirrors. The pupils worked together really well in their groups and showed a great understanding throughout the task. Well done, children!

It is always a pleasure to hear about Storm's karate adventures. He has enjoyed yet more success recently by obtaining the red belt. Storm proudly explained to the entire junior school the steps he had to take to earn his belt, and he wowed us all by showing off more of fabulous moves. To begin with, Storm showed us some of the core strengthening activities that he often performs, before demonstrating his punching and blocking techniques. We cannot wait to hear what Storm does next! Well done!

Data Handling - Y6 Maths Mr. Babur's maths group have thrown themselves fully into their data handling topic. To take things up a gear, the group created a survey which they then conducted with the assistance of all pupils in Years 3,4,5 and 6. The children have then used this data to complete their table and have constructed a bar chart. Their task on Friday morning is to make a pie chart to show off their data! Very exciting, indeed. Keep up the great work, our young mathematicians.

A fabulous afternoon of Hockey was enjoyed at Lee- Our team did really well, especialHurst Swan by all pupils in Year 4. ly with our shooting and marking.

Our team is really doing well in The first match saw Team 1 take to the pitch lead by netball at the moment. Keep the captain for the day, Violet. Against some strong indi- good work up !!!! viduals MCS got to grips with the game and battled well throughout. Etta played particularly well and Megan, Y6 showed some real skills. Cormac did a brilliant job at the back and everyone gave their all. We lost that match 0-2.

Netball vs Sandroyd Team 2 captained by Maxwell took to the pitch and it was clear they had been watching Team 1 closely.

With Ella showing particular strength in the centre of the pitch and Jack Wyman giving his all in defence, the team set about the match with gusto.

Jack Rogers scored twice past the LHS defenders and showed some real natural flair with his hockey. Ava was an example to others with her sporting conduct too, supporting others to give their very best!

The match finished up 2-0 to MCS. A quick hot dog tea and shaking of hands finished a lovely afternoon.

Well done to all year 4 for playing their parts, and to those parents who were able to come along to watch.

We worked very hard against a strong team, making good use of space and were good at driving for the ball. We had great communication between us calling for the ball and letting each other know where we were. Overall a good match to start the season.

I think that today, we all definitely had an experience, with Louisa scoring a goal. Millie was very good at keeping the ball high. Nanfadima was amazing, and running back and forth, intercepting and catching balls everywhere. She worked very hard during he match, Evie made a good defender, and Cindy even went on to defend for a bit, and she was also vey good.

This was the First netball match for our Moyles team since Christmas, unfortunately we lost however I don’t think that the score was a fair reflection of our performance.

Yr 6 Line Netball Match vs Ballard This was our first line netball match and what a great way to start! Both of our teams picked up the rules of the super speedy game almost immediately. From the beginning our team work was impeccable; we were supporting each other and communicating well. As the games progressed, we improved our positioning and tactical play. With neither of the teams losing a game against Ballard, we all walked off with a smile on our faces. Everyone agreed it was an extremely successful afternoon and we had certainly earned the hot chocolate and donuts!

During the first half we saw great teamwork with communication from the whole team, we also saw lots of driving on to the ball by Eleni which made a really positive impact on the match.

In the third quarter we saw Sophia making a great appearance with some really good defending.

In the final quarter after a great team talk from miss Clark, we saw Edel making some great defensive marking in the centre position and we also saw Daisy making some good goals working with Balla, Miss Clark said that we’ve found the dream team!!

BCS gave their players’ player award to Martha and Balla, which were well deserved as they both put in a great performance on the day.
