You are the heroes! As we reflect on our second year as Meals on Wheels of the Greater Lehigh Valley, we thank you for helping us make this community one where seniors and people with disabilities can live independently. We salute our volunteers every day, but even more so this past year. They were truly the heroes of this pandemic. Their dedication to uninterrupted meal delivery saved lives. Grocery shopping volunteers shopped at a rate four times their usual number. Meal delivery volunteers carried frozen and shelf stable emergency meals in addition to regular meals, as well as creating valuable social connections. The community at large also rallied behind our efforts to increase our service with hundreds of community volunteers making masks and distilleries donating hand sanitizer to keep our volunteers, client and staff safe. Volunteers could not do this alone. We needed funds to purchase the meals for delivery and donors responded! Together, you raised a record-breaking $1,448,578! This is $300,000 more than last year and the highest campaign yet. While Meals on Wheels programs across the country limited customers or switched to once a week deliveries, we INCREASED SERVICES during this time of vital need. The giving spirit of the Lehigh Valley is both rare and remarkable. Because of you, we continue to create real and lasting change: •

You are the heroes! A Client’s Strength During Hard Times At 93 years old, MOWGLV client, Madeline, recently lost her longtime boyfriend, John, to COVID-19. Madeline and John had been together for 14 years; they found each other after their respective spouses passed. The couple were old friends and had even dated back in high school. The 80-year-old couple were happy to have found each other again, not only for companionship but to share in managing the general challenges of advanced age. Now that John is passed and Madeline is living alone again, Meals on Wheels bring normalcy to her life and something to look forward to each day. The meals provide her with nourishment and she has developed friendships with the volunteers who deliver meals. Prior to receiving Meals on Wheels Madeline would eat a lot of frozen dinners which was not ideal for managing her sodium intake. She is also recovering from various health ailments requiring her to use oxygen 24/7. Madeline’s family desperately wants to avert hospitalizations and feel that a daily check from the Meals on Wheels volunteers is an added bonus to the meal service. Even through harder times, Madeline continues to show her strength as well as her honest humor. We are glad to be able to provide her with healthy meals and volunteer check-ins.
Mike Harakal, Whitehall Township Mayor Whitehall Township Mayor, Mike Harakal (1984-1992; 2017-present) is no stranger to the Meals on Wheels organization. Both his mother and his mother-in-law received the service before their passing. For Mayor Harakal’s mother-in-law, Julia, receiving her meal was the highlight of her day. “She couldn’t wait for the volunteers to arrive. She would just light up”! Harakal’s mother-in-law loved the time the volunteers would spend at her doorway chatting about the day’s happenings. Harakal reminisces that there were two equally important benefits to Meals on Wheels – the healthy food and the visits from friendly volunteers. Over the past decade, Whitehall Township has been a dedicated supported of Meals on Wheels of the Greater Lehigh Valley. Their yearly donation not only supports those clients living within their township, but it also aids to the growth of the whole organization. We are thankful to Mayor Harakal and the entire Township for their support, both financial and through word-of-mouth.

IN THE FAMILY Helping others. That is the legacy that original Meals on Wheels volunteer, Phyllis Burdette passed on to her family. Phyllis’s eldest son, Bob was about 10 years old when she began volunteering for Meals on Wheel of Lehigh County in 1971. She was already very active in the community volunteering with both the Emmaus Library and the historical society. Bob fondly remembers his mother as a person looking to help others. She loved meeting and talking to new people, so being a volunteer with Meals on Wheels seemed like a perfect fit for Phyllis. For over 30 years, Phyllis delivered not just nutritious meals to homebound seniors in the Lehigh Valley, but she also delivered heartfelt conversation and smiles. Bob recalls that his mother was never one to brag about her volunteer work, but he could tell the positive impact that it made on her heart. Phyllis’s volunteerism and dedication to helping the clients of Meals on Wheel also made a lasting impression on Bob. “As I get older and closer to the age of the Meals on Wheels clients, you can see more clearly the value of the Meals on Wheels program”. For Phyllis, her family always came first. A dedicated mother to her three children, she always made a point to be attentive to the needs of her daughter and two sons. After Phyllis passed away in 2009, Bob took over his mother’s role as “family historian”. While he inherited all of the family photo albums that his mother kept, he decided that he wanted to keep Phyllis’s legacy with Meals on Wheels going. For the past 12 years, Bob and his wife, Bonnie, have provided support for the clients that his mother loved so much. This way, they can continue what his mother started – feeding and caring for those in need.
