The Game That Inspired A Town

W

hen Craig Patrick brought junior hockey back to Austin in 2010, he wanted nothing more than for his team to be a integral piece of the community. Ten years later, it’s apparent that Patrick’s vision has become reality. The Bruins are a staple in the Austin community. They spend numerous hours at schools preaching their Healthy Habits programs, helping young hockey players learn the game by stopping by Austin Youth Hockey practices, and offer various donations to local charities and fundraising groups. The Bruins even have a specialty burger named after them at the B & J Bar and Grill, the Bruins Burger. For ten years, the Bruins have been welcomed by the Austin community and in return have tried to repay the favor in any way they could.

To find out where it all began, you have to look back to 2011, the second half of the Bruins first season. Craig Patrick, who was always thinking of ways to give back to the community, had an idea. This idea manifested in painting the rink pink, having players wear custom pink-colored jerseys, and create a night that’s entirely dedicated to battling cancer. The night was meant to raise funds which would be donated to the Hormel Institute for cancer research, and to honor those who have lost, won, and are still battling the disease. It wasn’t easy to get off the ground, but thanks to local businesses and the community of Austin, the first ever Paint the Rink Pink game was played on February 5, 2011. It was an instant hit. So much so, that the “Paint the Rink Pink” game, spawned off into a community wide “Paint the Town Pink” initiative which has raised over $1.5 million dollars for the Hormel Institute for cancer research, the Bruins themselves having donated over a quarter of a million dollars. Following the Bruins lead, various other organizations began popping up including a demolition derby and a polar plunge.

Since that very first game in 2011, the Paint the Rink Pink game has become the most frequently circled game on the calendar. It’s the closest thing you’ll find to a guaranteed sellout at Riverside Arena and the tickets go on sale months in advance to accommodate fans.

At Paint the Rink Pink, fans get so much more than a hockey game. Sure, there have been plenty of little tweaks to the presentation over the seasons, but fans are always in for a good time. It all starts with a hockey game, the Bruins donning their pink jerseys which fans can purchase right off the players’ backs following the final whistle. During the game, there are other ways spectators can help the fight against cancer, including a Punch-A-Prize game where for

a $10 donation fans can earn some great prizes from local businesses like gift certificates and other items. The players also perform skits following the game, as a way to lighten the mood of an otherwise heavy night. There’s been performances of National Anthems from foreign players, lip-sync battles, dances, and so much more.

During one of the intermissions, fans will be treated to a video memorial of people who have fought cancer. The Bruins are looking for fan submissions for this years memorial video are are collecting names on their website, austinbruins.com/ptrpphotos. The entire night boils down to one thing, to honor those who have had to fight this terrible disease and to give back so that we can one day find a cure.

It was the hope that a simple hockey game could chip in and give back to the community, and it turned out to be a movement. Paint the Rink Pink, the game that pulled together the town of Austin to fight under one cause. The Bruins are proud to announce their 10th anniversary of Paint the Rink Pink, happening on Saturday, February 8 at 7:05. Doors open an extra half hour early, at 5:30, to accommodate the extra fans with happy hour running from 5:30 until puck drop.
