Greetings from the Director

Summer has gone by too fast, but we are very excited about everything we’ve accomplished these past few months.

Recently, the City purchased the Wentzville Ice Arena (910 Main Plaza Dr.). This facility provides opportunities for hosting additional Wentzville Parks and Recreation programs and special events including public skating, hockey tournaments, learn-to-skate programs and ice rentals. The addition of facilities like this one continue to provide Wentzville residents with opportunities to interact and connect as a community. To learn more about the Ice Arena, please see pg. 16.

This summer, the City also shared an update on the Multigenerational Recreation Facility project. Following the approval of a development agreement at a June Board of Aldermen meeting, the Wentzville Bend and the Multigenerational Recreation Facility are moving forward. The Parks Master Plan, Recreation Center Feasibility Study and a series of public meetings all indicated a strong community desire for this type of facility. We are committed to providing resources for our residents and the community as a whole. This project falls directly in line with the Board’s strategic goals and recognizes the distinct needs of all of our residents – varying from indoor recreational opportunities to amenities for senior citizens. The Mayor, Board of Aldermen and City staff are very happy to provide this new amenity to our residents. To learn more about this project, please see pg. 13.

Now that summer is coming to an end, we invite you to make plans to enjoy some of our fall and winter activity favorites! Don’t miss events such as the Monster Mash Trunk-or-Treat (pg. 11), Bingo with Santa (pg. 11) and, of course, Holiday Night Lights at Rotary Park (pg. 10). Again this year, we’ll also host our Fall Festival in Historic Downtown Wentzville (pg. 9); this second-year event will offer live entertainment, kid-friendly activities, art and craft vendors and more!

We’re thrilled to be able to enhance the community with events and projects like these and look forward to many more improvements in the future!

Parks & Recreation Board

This volunteer advisory group to the Board of Aldermen, Mayor and Director of Parks and Recreation serves as a sounding board by holding public meetings and exercising influence throughout the City to improve and expand recreational opportunities. Members are appointed by the Mayor and approved by the Board of Aldermen for a three-year term. The Parks & Recreation Board meets at 6:30P on the first Monday of each month at Wentzville City Hall (1001 Schroeder Creek Blvd.). The meetings are open to the public. Wentzville has been recognized for nine consecutive years as a "Tree City USA" recipient. In the fall of 2014, Wentzville's Parks and Recreation Board created the Tree Committee, which reviews the City's tree and landscape ordinances. Resident and Nonresident Definitions Wentzville residents are those living within the city limits of the City of Wentzville. City limits and Post Office boundaries are not the same, so it’s possible to have a Wentzville address yet live outside the city. A Household Annual Pass consists of two adults and three children, 22 years of age or younger, living in the same household. Additional children may be added to a membership for $25 per child (for residents) or $35 per child (for nonresidents).

Resident Card* Information Resident Cards enable Wentzville residents to access recreation facilities, recreation programs and classes at discounted resident prices. Cards can be purchased at Progress Park (968 Meyer Rd.) for $5 per person.

Each resident, ages 2 and up, must have a resident card in order to access the facilities at the resident rate. The resident card offers the following benefits: • Early registration for programs (before nonresidents) • One-time free admission to one Parks and Recreation facility • Free trees or seedlings at the annual Arbor Day Tree Giveaway (while supplies last) • Reduced rates when reserving City facilities • Reduced rates on annual passes and daily admission • Discounts on many City-sponsored recreation programs and classes

Photos & Videos If you do not want yourself or your child photographed/filmed, please notify the administration office in writing in advance of the program starting.

Register Early for Programs All programs must meet minimum enrollment in order to be offered.

If there are not enough registrants, a course must be canceled.

Unless otherwise noted, all registrations must be received a minimum of one week prior to the start of the first class. Parks and Recreation reserves the right to cancel, postpone, combine classes or change instructors as needed. If a class is canceled due to lack of enrollment, registered class participants will be notified of an alternate class or program if one is available, or a full refund check or credit slip will be processed within four weeks.

Accommodation Policy We offer reasonable medical accommodations to enable an individual’s successful participation in our programs and services.

To ensure a medically safe and appropriately planned program, please provide any special needs or precautions which may require medical accommodations for participation; once the registration has been processed, a staff member will call the registrant to obtain additional information. Refund Guidelines: • A full (100%) refund/credit/transfer will be given if Wentzville Parks & Recreation cancels the program or rental.

• If the participant withdraws from the program before the first class/game,* the Department must receive a request and a full refund will be given, less a $10 administrative fee.

The refund will be processed as a credit to the household account.** Credit can be used on future programs. A credit may be used by any member on the same household account.

• *No refunds will be issued for adult leagues after the registration deadline.

• Refunds for medical reasons, requested prior to the start date of the program, will be granted a full refund** subject to verification.

• If the participant withdraws from the program any time after the first class/game, the department requires a request and a prorated credit to the account will be given, less a $10 administrative fee.** No refunds will be issued after the program/session is half over.

• **All youth league refunds will be less the cost of uniforms.

• Any refunds processed for volunteer coaching will be applied to the household account for future purchases.

• An administrative cancellation fee of $10 will apply to all pavilion or field rentals.

• A cancellation for a Progress Park Center reservation will forfeit the deposit.

• If a participant withdraws from a program after supplies or tickets have been purchased, refund will be pro-rated minus these expenses.

GIFT CARDS AVAILABLE! Gift cards can be purchased for classes and annual passes to any facility in the Wentzville Parks and Recreation system. For more information, please call (636) 332-9236.

WE P.L.A.Y. Scholarship (Wentzville Residents Only)

The WE P.L.A.Y. Scholarship program (or Wentzville Providing Leisure Assistance for Youth) is designed to provide youth access to the recreation and leisure activities of their choice ― regardless of their ability to pay. Discounted annual passes may be available. Please call the Parks and Recreation Department at (636) 332-9236 for more information.

Who is eligible? City of Wentzville residents who are experiencing financial difficulty or who are in a unique hardship situation may apply.

•

How does the program work? Children residing within the city limits and who qualify through the established guidelines of free lunch program utilized by the Wentzville and Fort Zumwalt school districts are eligible to apply.

Children who do not receive the reduced or free lunch program may still qualify and are encouraged to apply, if assistance is needed. Children ages 17 and under are eligible to receive one program scholarship per brochure with a maximum of three per year.

Holiday Night Lights Holiday Night Lights 5K & Fun Run (All Ages)

Come enjoy our Holiday Night Lights display with a 5K or one-mile run! The Holiday Night Lights 5K will take you through the light display at Rotary Park just in time for the holiday season! Note: First portion of 5K will leave Rotary Park and enter the Stonemoor Subdivision. This race is fun for the entire family. *Registration starts at 2:30P; race starts at 4:30P. The first place winners of the 5K in each of the following age groups will receive awards: 10 and under; 11-14; 15-19; 20-29; 30-39; 40-49; 50-59; 60-69; 70 and older. The top three overall males and females will also receive awards, but they will not be awarded for winning their age group. To guarantee shirt size, please register by NOV 8. Medals will be awarded after the last 5K runner has completed the course. The one-mile race will begin once the 5K route is clear and medals have been awarded. (Min 75/Max 300) SU SU

Holiday Night Lights Walk-Thru | DEC 2 from 5-8P

This walk-thru event allows participants to enjoy the Holiday Night Lights display at a slower, more intimate pace. Attendees will stroll through the one-mile light display, experiencing enchanted scenes, twinkling lights and holiday-themed music.

After walking the illuminated route, participants will enjoy refreshments, photo booth fun, beautifully decorated Christmas trees on display and a photo with Santa.

Decorated trees are donated by local businesses and organizations. To donate a tree from your business or organization, please contact fun@wentzvillemo.org. Cost is $3 in advance and $5 day of, per person. Inclement weather date if we cancel the event: DEC 3. Children under age two are free.

Sleigh Hayrides

Book a wintertime, tractor-pulled hayride through beautiful Rotary Park to tour the breathtaking Holiday Night Lights. *Rides are available on Mondays and Wednesdays at 6P, 6:45P, 7:30P, 8:15P and 9P. (Except Monday, DEC 2 and Wednesday, DEC 25).

Sleigh Hayrides are perfect for scouts, church groups, picnics, company parties or family/neighborhood get-togethers. Sip hot chocolate, munch on cookies and listen to holiday music while sitting around the bonfire. The hayride will hold a maximum of 25 people, including lap children. Rides are scheduled on a first-come, firstserved basis. You must register ahead of time. A two-week notice is required; no refunds will be given, unless the display is closed. You can pay ahead of time for an additional lap around the park with your group for an extra $25.

Holiday Night Lights Drive-Thru | 5:30-9:30P

The annual Wentzville Holiday Night Lights display at Rotary Park opens on Friday, NOV 29 for the holiday season. Enjoy a one-mile light display that features large illuminated commercial scenes and tunnels of twinkling lights. This holiday display is a great way to experience the magic and joy of a winter wonderland close to home.

Drive-thru admission is only $8 for vehicles holding up to six passengers; $1 per additional person after the sixth. On Saturday evenings at the Kolb Building, you can enjoy a visit with Santa and see beautifully decorated trees on display from various businesses and organizations. SEE SCHEDULE BELOW.

Fall Citywide Yard Sale

Wentzville’s Citywide Yard Sale is Friday and Saturday, SEP 27-28. The Citywide Yard Sale is the perfect opportunity to clean out before the seasons change. Just think, you'll have a cleaner house for the holidays! For $7 you can list your sale in our yard sale booklet. You have the option to have a one- or two-day sale! Deadline to list a sale is Monday, SEP 23. Beginning Wednesday, SEP 25, shoppers may purchase a booklet listing all of the local sales at City Hall or Progress Park for only $2.

Halloween Window Decorating (All Ages)

The Wentzville Downtown Business Association and the Wentzville Parks and Recreation Department have teamed up to offer a revamped Halloween Window Decorating Contest. Participants will have the option to choose between three different mediums: Paint, drawing (with crayon and/or marker) or construction paper. Entries will compete to win in two different categories: Best Halloween Theme and Most Original. Each category will have a first-, second- and third-place winner. Winners will receive a gift certificate (First = $50, Second = $25, Third = $10). Some supplies will be provided. Downtown Wentzville window locations will be assigned when supplies are picked up. The registration deadline is OCT 11.

Supply pickup is OCT 14. Designs must be hung by OCT 25. Judging will take place on OCT 27 and winners will be announced on OCT 28. (Max 20)

Buddy the Elf

Between DEC 2 and DEC 18, be on the lookout for Buddy, the life-sized elf, at one of Wentzville’s parks, City buildings or local businesses. Buddy will move to a new location every few days. Buddy will post pictures and/or clues about his location on Wentzville’s Parks and Recreation Facebook page (www.facebook.com/wentzvilleparks). Simply find Buddy, take creative pictures and send them to BuddyTheElf@wentzvillemo.org.

On DEC 20, we will award first-, second- and third-place prizes for the most creative photos with Buddy. This contest is open to both residents and nonresidents; enter as often as you like. Tree Lighting & Christmas Parade

The Annual Tree Lighting will start at 5:30P on Sunday, DEC 1. The tree is located at the intersection of Pearce and Luetkenhaus boulevards, across from Pete’s Drive-In. Gathering for the Tree Lighting will begin at 5:30P, with holiday musical entertainment to kick off the festivities. Mayor Nick Guccione will officially light the tree just prior to the start of the 16th Annual "Spirit of the Season" Christmas Parade. The Parade will begin at approximately 6P in Historic Downtown Wentzville, at the intersection of Linn Avenue and Pearce Boulevard; it will travel east on Pearce Boulevard and north on Luetkenhaus Boulevard, ending at the Wentzville Fire Protection District Headquarters at 502 Luetkenhaus Blvd. Following the parade, attendees can enjoy cookies, candy canes, hot chocolate and a visit with Santa and Mrs. Claus at the fire station. Staging for the floats will take place at Pearce Hall at 317 W. Pearce Blvd. Parade participants should call Donna-Marie Pierre at (636) 332-8801.

During the June Board of Aldermen meeting, an ordinance was passed approving a Development Agreement for the Wentzville Bend project.

This development will encompass approximately 60 acres of property located south and east of Wentzville Parkway, and north of William Dierberg Drive. As currently envisioned, the project consists of two major elements – a 140,000 square-foot retail shopping center and an 80,000 square-foot Multigenerational Recreation Facility.

Larry Hinson is offering a six-week American Sign Language (ASL) class for individuals with a basic knowledge of ASL. Youth Futsal League (Ages 8-12)

Futsal is a sport that is a derivative of soccer and played on a basketball court with no walls and a smaller, low-bouncing ball. Participants will be placed on co-ed teams based on age. Participants will receive a shirt. Games will take place M-TH evenings.

Youth Lacrosse Clinic (Ages 6-18)

The Wentzville Lacrosse Club brings you this three-hour clinic. It will focus on the fundamentals of lacrosse in a fun teaching environment. Players will participate in a variety of drills, which include techniques of catching, throwing, weak-hand training, ground balls and basic defensive/offensive concepts. Players will be broken up by skill level, age and gender. Experienced players are welcome! This is a great opportunity for high-school age players to explore the game of lacrosse before choosing their spring sport this year! Tweens and Teens Helping Hands (Ages 10-16)

Are you looking for a way to better your community? Wentzville Parks and Recreation offers a FREE volunteer program for youth. This once-a-month, one-hour program will take place on the third Wednesday of each month, except November. Parents will be responsible for transportation to and from the destination. Projects are subject to change as volunteer needs change.

Fall Festival: Teen Talent Search

Calling all teen singers, dancers, jugglers, magicians, comedians and more! We are on the search for a variety of local talent to perform at the 2019 Fall Festival.

Selected performers will take the stage for up to 15 minutes and share their talent, skill or ability with the community. Judges will score each performance based on a number of categories. The top three winners will receive a cash prize. Third place will receive $50, second place will receive $75 and first place will receive $100.

All participants must complete an application and could be called upon to display their skills via an interview. Applications can be found at Progress Park and the deadline to apply is SEP 13. Performances may be scheduled for any day/time during the festival: SEP 20-21. For other questions, please call (636) 639-2088 or email fun@wentzvillemo.org.

Eagle Scout & Gold Award Project Partnerships

Wentzville Parks and Recreation wants to support our local Boy Scout and Girl Scout leaders by partnering with them to complete their Eagle Scout and Gold Award Projects. Participating Boy Scouts or Girl Scouts can work alongside the Wentzville Parks & Recreation Department to complete a project that makes a unique, positive impact on our community. If you do not have a project in mind, we can offer several suggestions. Based upon the details of your project, we will put you in contact with an individual who can support you and your project the most.

Beginners Spanish (Ages 11-16)

Hablas EspaĂąol? Learn how! This eight-session class will be instructed by Peter Hult, a Spanish teacher in the Wentzville School District. Participants will learn at their own pace in a supportive setting. Along with professional instruction, all participants will have access to online resources to ensure their success in and out of class. Class will meet twice a week from 3:30-4:40P. Participants should bring a smartphone or electronic device and headphones to each class. (Min 5/Max 15) M/TH 3:30P
