HEAD’S UPDATE Week beginning 26th February 2024

A message from the Head

It has been great to welcome the children back to school this week; I hope you all had a superb half term. I often talk about the importance of resilience to the children, and this week was no different, but I approached a different aspect of resilience. This was prompted by a couple of things; firstly, an article (admittedly a somewhat clickbait type article ) I read, last week, about Gen Z ‘ghosting’ employers and not bothering to turn up for interviews. Secondly, a discussion I had with Mrs Henry about resilience in children when work is more challenging. This is a genuine challenge children face, and the more we can help them to navigate this type of challenge the more likely their chances of success in the future.

I speak as someone who really struggled with this when I was at school; in fact, one of my school reports described me as ‘flattering to deceive’...... this was written by my DT teacher, who essentially produced my work for me. I look back on this with significant regret (not to mention embarrassment), and wish my approach had been a more resilient one.

In my Assembly this week, I spoke to the children about the importance of both participation and resilience, and set 4 groups a challenge - do ask the children about it. It involved 1 marshmallow, 20 pieces of raw spaghetti, some tape and some string. The groups rose to the challenge brilliantly - hopefully you will have seen some of the results on our social media, but if not, please see how well Mr Shaw-Kew participated!

This half term will feel more like a sprint than a marathon, so I am looking forward to making the most of every minute with our children.
