NEWS FROM MRS KNIGHT, HEAD OF PRE-PREP

14th June 2024

Last week, we seemed to have 43 little fish in the swimming pool as the children showed off their swimming skills and the progress they have made at the annual Years 1 and 2 Swimming Gala. There has been an emphasis on teamwork across the school this week, including lots of opportunities to work together and also to reflect on the importance of unity and collaboration. The gala was a powerful example of our children working together to achieve a common goal. Healthy competition is always evoked by a Castle challenge and the three castles were all desperate to do their best and come out on top in the various water-themed obstacle courses, set up and designed by Mrs Belton. Warkworth was ultimately victorious but the most special part of the afternoon was seeing the older children guiding and encouraging the younger ones, no matter what castle they were in!

The 80th anniversary of D-Day provided an opportunity to appropriately explain to the children one of the greatest examples of teamwork of the last century. As a school we learnt more about that remarkable day and took time to remember and reflect, thankful for the sacrifices of so many.

I have also taken time to speak to the children about the recently announced General Election, explaining that different ‘teams’ (parties) were vying to lead our country by establishing a Government. We likened this to our School Council members of our own democratically elected team.

Sports Day preparations are in full swing with Mr Shaw-Kew and Mrs Atkinson busy organising sporting activities which ensure that each and every child participates in a wide variety of fun events.

A Year 2 child reliably informed me that we only have another 3 Thursdays or 19 ½ days left in school before they are in Year 3. Time definitely flies when you are having fun. Have a lovely weekend, Warmest wishes, Kirsten Knight

Year 2 was justly proud of their medals!

NEWS FROM MRS KNIGHT, HEAD OF PRE-PREP

Nursery has rolled into this week finding out all about tides and rock pools. We have enjoyed learning a poem all about the tide coming in and out as well as exploring life in a rock pool, using our tuff tray to create their own mini rockpool. There has been lots of fantastic loose parts play, creating seaside scenes as well as bug hotels. We have also really enjoyed getting ready for our Sports Day; the children are excited about showing off their speed and skills!

Reception has been focusing on firefighters this week and their role in helping us. We hunted around the school for extinguishers, alarms and fire exits, and enjoyed role playing with the uniforms and hoses. The children have been having fun with phonics, splatting tricky words in a race against their opponents, and squirting digraphs with water pistols. We have also laughed when writing about Zog and the Flying Doctors in Drawing Club.

Year 1

The children had a fantastic trip to St Mary’s Lighthouse this week. They bravely climbed the 137 steps to the top of the lighthouse, where they took in the view, looked out for sinking ships and watched the seals sunbathing on the rocks. In the afternoon the children enjoyed rock pooling where they found a vast range of marine life, including a variety of crabs, fish, dog whelks and even a starfish!

Year 2 was also out and about this week with a fascinating trip to the Locomotion Museum at Shildon. Here we got up close to dozens of legendary locomotives from across the spectrum of railway history and engineering. We took part in a dramatic reenactment of the celebrations of "Locomotion" originally built by Robert Stephenson & Co. in Newcastle and used on the opening day of the Stockton & Darlington Railway on 27th September 1825.
