MEALS ON WHEELS COLLIN COUNTY

WHO WE ARE OUR MISSION

Meals on Wheels Collin County is a leading nonprofit organization that provides senior nutrition and hunger outreach services. We are committed to serving at-risk seniors and disabled adults in Collin County. Our organization is one of the largest volunteerdriven groups in the region, and we work closely with businesses, faith-based entities, civic organizations, and community groups.

Our focus is on combating senior hunger and isolation through a holistic and transformational approach to promoting senior independence and sustainability. We are proud to be an innovative organization that implements cutting-edge interventions for food insecurity and social isolation, as well as engaging the community beyond the conventional methods.

We collaborate seamlessly with emergency first responders and healthcare providers to ensure that we are a Public Health partner. Our track record during the pandemic is a testament to our commitment to service sustainability and productivity, as we successfully delivered an impressive 566,000 and counting meals and well checks to seniors in need. At Meals on Wheels Collin County, we are more than just a meal delivery service. We are a source of support, care, and positive change in the lives of those we serve.

Community Care:

How Meals on Wheels Collin County Helps Families Address Senior Loneliness

Our mission is to combat hunger and isolation in disabled and older adults by providing nutritious meals enabling them to remain healthy and independent within their families, homes, and communities.

OUR VISION

Meals on Wheels Collin County is an innovative and compassionate leader committed to seeing all older and disabled adults age in place with dignity as healthy, productive, and socially engaged human beings.

Loneliness and isolation affect many, but they can hit our seniors especially hard. Felicia B., who is 100 years old, schedules her daily routine around her Meals on Wheels delivery. She does this not because she is helpless but because she enjoys having friendly conversations and eating warm meals.

Felicia’s daughter, Mary, says that her mother is alert, self-sufficient, and independent, and she refuses to move in with a family member or a care home. However, Felicia has experienced a significant social void since the COVID-19 pandemic, which was filled by the Meals on Wheels program. Some volunteers even practice Spanish, Felicia’s native language, with her. In addition to the social interaction, Mary is happy that her mother can eat nutritious food. Mary says that her mother considers each volunteer an angel, and she agrees.

Through regular meal delivery, well-checks, and partnerships with the local fire departments, we are there for senior adults and their families. People like Felicia and Mary, who have turned to us for support, find comfort in knowing someone cares. Their stories show us how much of a difference we can make in helping seniors feel better and more secure.

It has been a pleasure for Meals on Wheels to serve Felicia. We think she is an angel, too!

Felicia B., MOWCC Senior Plano, TX

Letter from the CEO/EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Heroes of Hope, you are amazing! You touched the lives of over 2,000 seniors and disabled neighbors through Meals on Wheels Collin County (MOWCC). Thank you for joining us in the fight to combat senior hunger and isolation. Your kindness and generosity have helped seniors remain safe, healthy, and independent in their homes, amongst their families, and within their communities. Your genuine care in creating a positive impact on their lives extended above and beyond the door knock and meal delivery. You penetrated their walls with your beautiful, warm smiles and one simple question: “How are you today?” You made a difference by fulfilling the greater purpose of delivering hope!

Above and Beyond the Knock

In the last ten years, MOWCC has provided millions of meals and well-checks across 21 cities in Collin County. Together, we provided services to homebound seniors. We launched Congregate Meal sites through partnerships with senior centers and apartment complexes. Our dedicated and compassionate staff remained on the front lines, responding to the evergrowing needs of our clients. We navigated uncertainty during the pandemic by working alongside first responders and health care providers to keep over 4,000 seniors safe, healthy, and connected to others.

Together, we are creative, innovative, and resilient in our methods of serving one of the most vulnerable populations in the country. To stay abreast of technology and ensure the safety of our clients, we partnered with Alert Media. Through this invaluable partnership, we implemented a communication system to provide timely updates and information through text messaging. Tablets acquired through a grant, enabled us to provide an avenue for our clients to engage in Telemedicine doctor appointments, FaceTime with family and friends, and connect with others. These technological advancements are beyond-the-knock services that have thrust us into next-level services, impacting how we deliver hope.

In 2023, MOWCC exceeded our goal of 425,000 and delivered 471,948 hot, nutritious meals across 21 cities. Our newest rural congregate site in Princeton experienced growth. We underwent a vital kitchen expansion and upgraded appliances

to accommodate the demand for meals. We served thousands of holiday and emergency meals, adding a 5-day meal supply for congregate recipients and shelf-stable meals.

The Granite Properties donation of hundreds of fans along with The Tomes Auto Group, Subaru, and online donations made our Summer Cool campaign a huge success. Your donations enabled us to provide hundreds of air conditioners and fans. Community partnerships were vital in fulfilling hundreds of requests for emergency supplies and nutritional supplements.

A Heart-filled Thanks

I want to extend my sincerest gratitude to every Hero — Champion, Rick Dillahunty for his relentless commitment to the success of the annual regional golf tournament. I especially want to recognize Premier Arts Collective Foundation’s undying support and commitment. Globe Life Corporation for their board leadership and philanthropic support. Toyota North America for helping us maximize efficiency in our operations, and the Regional Area Agency on Aging for undergirding our work. Thanks to the State of Texas and Collin County Commissioners for their steadfast support, providing a strong foundation for our initiatives. We are deeply appreciative of the backing we’ve received.

Countless corporate and local businesses, including notable names such as Traxxas, and local Chambers of Commerce, have been instrumental in our mission. Author Sheila Williamson, along with these generous contributors, dedicated their time, talent, and resources to nourish seniors and respond to corporate takeover calls to action.

We are truly blessed with amazing stakeholders who have played a crucial role in our success. The leadership of the Meals on Wheels Collin County Board of Trustees and Advisory Board, under the guidance of Ray Ricchi, has been invaluable. Thank you for being an integral part of our journey.

Food Service volunteers John and Debbie Cave, Donna Sedota, and Pradipta Samal, thank you for your consistent support and dedication. Our Savior Lutheran Church for being a fantastic partner in love. Secret Santa Peggy Click, Cathy Jamison,

and thousands of regional meal delivery volunteers thank you for your overwhelming commitment to our cause. Your servant’s heart and spirit of excellence to Collin County seniors and disabled individuals is greatly appreciated.

Bridging the Generations

It’s heartwarming to see you playing such an important role in reminding future generations to care for seniors and fight against isolation and food insecurity. MOWCC’s Generation Project was successful in bridging the gap between the younger and older generations. The project involved designing programs, preparing shelf-stable care packages, delivering homebound meals, and serving seniors at congregate meal sites. Kudos to the Young Men’s Service League (YMSL), National Charity League (NCL), City of Plano Mayor’s Summer Intern program, City of Frisco Aspire, Job Corps McKinney, Girl Scout Troops, and Texas Women’s University for their contributions to this project.

What is the future for Collin County seniors at risk of hunger and isolation?

As our older neighbors experience a high rise of financial insecurity, a lost sense of purpose, ageism, health challenges, housing inflation, fraud, and mental health issues from isolation, Meals on Wheels Collin County will deliver hope!

In 2024, Meals on Wheels Collin County will continue efforts to maximize service capacity, delivering the highest quality senior services for 566,000 meals annually while accommodating a 20% annual recurring growth rate. As a result, MOWCC will need to be even more prepared and equipped to fight against senior hunger and isolation. The vision of a 40,000+ squarefoot building within the next year will expand the physical infrastructure to support regional demand and promote sustainability.

Meals on Wheels Collin County has been a highly effective and premier nonprofit leader, enabling seniors to age with dignity in their homes, families, and communities because of your partnership and relentless engagement to make a difference in the lives of others. The positive impact on senior food insecurity and loneliness in Collin County is a testament to the powerful support and dedication of volunteers and friends of Collin County seniors.

May you experience the blessings of peace and joy as you graciously share your time, talent, and treasure with the Collin County seniors through your families, ministries, businesses, schools, and organizations. Thank you for being Heroes of Hope! Most of all, thank you for being a part of the Meals on Wheels Collin County family.

The Lord is near to those who are discouraged; He saves those who have lost all hope. Psalm 34:18

Planned Giving through Gifts of Love & Legacy

MOWCC is fortunate to have some exceptional donors who offer their support through planned giving. They are true heroes who, by pledging their support, give us the freedom to channel resources to the areas where they are most needed.

We are profoundly grateful to two such individuals who have had a significant impact on Meals on Wheels Collin County and will always be remembered for their unwavering contributions.

Miss Henny Ries, a staunch supporter, is a shining example of generosity within our donor community. Her commitment to Meals on Wheels Collin County went beyond her lifetime, as she included us in her estate planning.

We would also like to express our heartfelt appreciation to the Richard W. Goode Trust. The legacy left by Mr. Goode will have a lasting impact, enabling us to reach out to even more individuals in need.

We pay tribute to and value the extraordinary contributions of Miss Henny Ries and the Richard W. Goode Trust, recognizing them as true champions of our cause. Their vision and support empower us to build a brighter future for our community.

When asked if well-checks from their volunteer made them feel safer, Mercy said, “Absolutely, you feel more confident and secure.” Mercy was very vocal about how friendly and accommodating their social worker was.

The Benefits of Planned Giving

Planned giving is a way for donors to contribute to charities while taking advantage of tax benefits offered by federal and state laws. These benefits include reduced income taxes, lower gift and estate taxes, or even generating income during the donor’s lifetime. Donors can make a lasting impact by including Meals on Wheels Collin County in their living will or trust, or by naming the organization as a beneficiary in retirement accounts, bank

brokerage accounts, or life insurance policies. By exploring planned giving options, donors can leave a lasting legacy and support Meals on Wheels’ vital mission of providing nourishment, care, and aid to those in need. It’s an opportunity to make a meaningful difference in the lives of vulnerable individuals in the community.

EMERGENCY BOXES

In times of crisis, being prepared can make all the difference. At Meals on Wheels Collin County, our commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of our seniors extends beyond daily meal deliveries. Our Emergency Preparedness initiatives play a crucial role in supporting our community during unexpected events such as storms, power outages, and other emergencies.

Our Emergency Meal Box Program has significantly expanded this year. Each box contains a weeks worth of non-perishable, nutritious food items and essential supplies, designed to provide immediate relief to seniors when regular meal deliveries are disrupted. Over the past year, we have distributed more than 12,000 emergency meal boxes to seniors across Collin County, ensuring they have the resources they need to stay safe and healthy during emergencies.

In response to power outages, we developed the Senior Power Outage Kit Program These kits include vital items such as flashlights, batteries, bottled water, and blankets, providing seniors with essential supplies to navigate power interruptions safely. To date, we have delivered 3,500 power outage kits, offering a lifeline to seniors during critical times.

Our First Responders Program continues to be a vital part of our emergency preparedness efforts. This initiative trains and equips volunteers to act as first responders in their communities, ensuring that seniors receive timely assistance during emergencies. Our volunteers are the backbone of our emergency response efforts.

From packing meal boxes to delivering kits, their commitment ensures that our seniors receive timely assistance. With the help of our dedicated staff and over 200 volunteers, we have been able to mobilize quickly and efficiently, reaching seniors even in the most challenging circumstances.

Looking ahead, our Emergency Preparedness programs are continually growing to better serve our community. Future plans include expanding our supply inventory, enhancing volunteer training, and strengthening community partnerships to ensure we are ready to respond to any crisis.

None of this would be possible without the generous support of our donors, partners, and volunteers. Your contributions make a tangible difference, providing security and peace of mind to our senior neighbors during emergencies. Together, we are building a resilient and prepared community.

Community Engagement: Drives & Fundraisers

Whether it’s a fundraising gala, a charity run, or a virtual gathering, events provide essential resources from shelf-stable foods to necessities like toiletries and wheelchairs to hugs and a smile that help us meet our seniors’ daily needs.

In the summer of 2023, the DFW Metroplex in Texas experienced an extreme heatwave, recording the third hottest summer ever. There were 47 consecutive days where the temperature reached 100 degrees, tying for the fourth longest stretch.

We were privileged to partner with three amazing organizations that understand the effect extreme heat may have on our clients: Granite Properties, The Tomes Auto Group, and Subaru. Granite Properties in Plano delivered a record-break-

ing 300 fans to Meals on Wheels Collin County through their annual fan drive. The Tomes Auto Group and W.E. Fowler a representative of Subaru donated window air conditioning units. In addition, our online Heroes clicked the Amazon online donation link to contribute to fans and air conditioners!

Thank you all for your generosity and for keeping our seniors safe and cool!
