MOVING WITH THE MILITARY

As we welcome 2025, I can’t help but feel a mix of excitement and reflection. This year brings so many changes for my family, and while transitions can be bittersweet, they also offer an opportunity to embrace new beginnings with open hearts.

After 20 years of service, my husband Patrick will be retiring from the military It’s hard to believe this chapter is coming to a close, but as one door closes, another opens. I am thrilled to share that Patrick will be joining Moving With The Military! His perspective as a veteran and his deep understanding of military families will bring an incredible new layer to what we do. It’s truly a full-circle moment, and I couldn’t be more excited to have him by my side on this journey.

On the home front, our daughter is graduating college a moment that fills us with pride and a little nostalgia. Meanwhile, our son has joined the military, embarking on his own service journey. As a mother, I am both incredibly proud and keenly aware of the unique challenges and joys that come with his decision

With all these changes, 2025 feels like a year of transitions a season of honoring where we ’ ve been and stepping boldly into what’s next Our mission remains the same: to remind these families that they are seen, valued, and appreciated.

Change can be daunting, but it’s also an invitation to grow, to dream, and to discover. This year, I invite you to dream alongside us. Create your vision boards, set meaningful goals, and embrace the transitions in your life. Together, let’s make 2025 a year to remember.

Thank you for being part of this incredible community. Here’s to a year of growth, gratitude, and new beginnings!

Transitioning Together

After 20 years of service in the United States Army, Patrick is retiring Those words still feel surreal to say out loud. For two decades, the military has shaped our lives, taught us resilience, and given us a sense of purpose. Now, as we prepare to close this chapter, we find ourselves reflecting on what this journey has meant and looking ahead with hope and determination.

Military life is not just a career; it’s a calling It’s a path that requires sacrifices from every member of the family, but it’s also filled with incredible rewards friendships that feel like family, experiences that make you grow, and a deep understanding of what service truly means.

Our Family’s Next Chapter

As we step into 2025, our family is standing at the edge of a big life change one that’s both exciting and bittersweet.

Patrick has lived this calling with honor, and I’ve been proud to walk beside him every step of the way.

Now, as he transitions from active duty to civilian life, we ’ re not saying goodbye to the values that have guided us for so long. In fact, we ’ re doubling down on them.

A Forever Mission

The military has been a part of our story, but service is in our hearts and that’s something that doesn’t change just because Patrick is hanging up his uniform Serving veterans and military families has always been the heartbeat of Moving With The Military, and it will continue to be our mission for as long as we ’ re able.

We see this new chapter as an opportunity to expand what we do. Patrick will be joining me on our home makeover projects, bringing not only his hands-on skills but also the unique perspective of someone who’s been in the boots of those we serve He understands, in a very personal way, what military families face the challenges of moving, the difficulty of creating a true “home” amidst constant change, and the sacrifices that often go unseen.

Whether it’s building a custom piece of furniture, offering a listening ear, or simply showing up, Patrick is ready to dive in and give back in this new way For us, this isn’t just work; it’s a calling. It’s about honoring the people who have given so much and making sure they know they’re never forgotten.

Navigating Change Together

Transitioning out of the military isn’t easy. We’re learning that firsthand. It’s not just a shift in job titles; it’s a shift in identity, routine, and purpose There are moments of uncertainty, but also moments of clarity and excitement.

For our family, this change has brought us closer together. It’s reminded us of the importance of setting new goals and leaning into each other for strength. and to celebrate the incredible strength and resilience of the military community. Thank you for being part of this story We can’t wait to see where this next chapter takes us and you. 4

Looking Ahead

As we move forward, our goals are simple:

To continue serving those who serve.

To honor the sacrifices of military families.

To create spaces where love, comfort, and community thrive.

This is more than a new chapter for us it’s a continuation of a lifelong mission. The military has shaped us, but the desire to serve others will always be who we are.

We’re excited to walk this journey with all of you, to share our experiences, and to celebrate the incredible strength and resilience of the military community. Thank you for being part of this story We can’t wait to see where this next chapter takes us and you.

A Bedroom Transformation with Purpose

For military families like the Dowells, home is more than just a living space it’s a foundation for stability, peace, and renewal. Moving With The Military isn’t just about redesigning homes it’s about creating spaces that support the unique needs of these families, helping them find comfort and joy.

Every makeover tells a story, not just about creating a beautiful space, but about honoring those who have given so much. It’s about sharing their story, letting them know they are seen and valued Our mission is not just to beautify homes but to build a community of support, where people come together to show gratitude for the sacrifices made by veterans and their families.

The Dowells were nominated for their makeover by their students a beautiful reminder of the impact they’ve made in their community. Their students, inspired by Nick’s dedication as a school resource officer and Sara’s passion as a middle school teacher, saw their hard work and selflessness and wanted to give back. This act of kindness from the next generation speaks to the profound respect and admiration the community has for them

This is more than just about design it’s about community. It’s about creating a space where these families can feel the love and appreciation of those around them Every piece of furniture, every detail, becomes a part of their story a reminder that they are not alone.

Our goal was to transform their bedroom into a dark and moody sanctuary, a retreat that would offer tranquility amidst their busy lives.

The Vision

Our goal was to transform their bedroom into a dark and moody sanctuary, a retreat that would offer tranquility amidst their busy lives Inspired by Sara’s love for deep, rich tones and Nick’s desire for a peaceful, cozy space, we created a design that blended military heritage with modern sophistication.

Before the Makeover

Before the makeover, the Dowells’ bedroom lacked personality. It was a space that felt cluttered and disjointed, lacking warmth and comfort. Furniture was mismatched, and there wasn’t a cohesive design that made the room feel like a true sanctuary.

The Transformation

The transformation began with the color palette We incorporated deep, moody tones rich greens, warm woods, and gold accents that reflected Sarah’s love for a serene, calming atmosphere to character to the space we focused on decorative elements and exquisite textures to help tell their story.

We replaced the outdated furniture with pieces that combined functionality and style. Nick mentioned his love for "barracks furniture" because of its simplicity, so I used that as inspiration, giving it a fresh, modern twist. Statement plush, dark bedding became the focal point, creating a cozy and inviting atmosphere New lighting added warmth and ambiance, while carefully selected accessories, like velvet throw pillows and woven rugs, tied the entire space together.

The Result

The Dowells’ bedroom became a haven a place where they could rest, reflect, and reconnect after long days of service. The transformation not only elevated their space but also honored their journey and the sacrifices they made for their country.

We believe that a home is so much more than just walls and a roof it’s a place where love grows, where memories are made, and where families find comfort and renewal. For us, creating a home isn’t just about the décor; it’s about honoring the people who live there and the stories they carry. That’s why our mission is so personal Every makeover is a way to say, We see you. We honor you.

Using the triangle or geometric rule for styling shelves is based on the principle of balance and visual interest The idea is that placing items in triangular or staggered groupings creates a sense of harmony and structure By arranging books, plants, or decorative items, you draw the eye along a natural flow, creating a cohesive and organized look. This method also helps avoid a cluttered appearance, making your shelf feel thoughtfully curated and visually appealing

One of the makeovers that touched our hearts deeply was for Nick and Sara Dowell. Their story of service, dedication, and quiet sacrifice reminded us why we do what we do. It wasn’t just about transforming their bedroom it was about showing them how much they are valued by their community and by all of us Their journey left a mark on us, just as we hope we left a little light in their lives.

Vintage-inspired gallery wall. Think botanical prints, antique maps, and nostalgic portraits, all framed in chic gold, rustic wood, or classic black. Mix and match sizes and styles for a perfectly curated, timeless vibe. It’s like bringing the past into the present minus the dust!

In a world of minimalist trends, bold decor choices stand out like never before. Unusual pieces especially statement lamps not only light up a room but also transform it into a conversation-worthy space.

Why Statement Pieces Work

A striking lamp or quirky decor item can serve as both functional and artistic. Think geometric designs, vintage-inspired mushroom lamps, or sculptural floor pieces that double as art. “Unusual decor creates a connection between design and emotion,” says interior stylist Maria Reed.

How to Use Statement Decor

Here’s how to incorporate bold pieces into your space:

THE POWER OF UNUSUAL DECOR

1. Match the Mood: Playful designs create inviting spaces; sleek materials evoke modern vibes.

Start Small: Begin with a single standout item, like a lamp, and build around it.

2. Mix Materials: Pair materials like marble, wood, or glass for added texture.

3 Let It Shine: Keep surrounding decor simple to let your statement piece stand out.

5.

4. Add Color: Bright or patterned pieces can add energy to neutral rooms.

Beyond Lighting

Consider other bold choices, like sculptural coffee tables or oversized mirrors, to make your space unforgettable. Unusual decor is more than an aesthetic it's self-expression. A standout lamp or eyecatching detail can transform a space and spark joy. Let your home shine as brightly as your style.

Incorporating the Color of the Year into your home doesn’t have to be a daunting task, especially for military families who often face the challenges of moving and living in rental spaces with strict rules about painting. You can embrace colors in renter-friendly ways. Start with throw pillows, cozy blankets, or rugs in these earthy tones to add warmth and personality to your space.

Consider updating your decor with vases, picture frames, or lamps in complementary shades Even swapping out kitchen towels or adding artwork with hints of the color can make a big impact. These small, budget-friendly touches allow you to stay on-trend without making permanent changes perfect for families who are always on the move.

FRESH START MADE SIMPLE

YOUR GUIDE TO A BETTER JANUARY

Jumpstart your year with simple tips to declutter, reset routines, and refresh your home.

There’s something magical about January. It’s the month that invites us to reflect on the past and plan for the future, offering a clean slate to create the life and home we want. While the idea of starting fresh can feel overwhelming, the truth is that small, intentional changes can lead to meaningful transformations.

Whether you ’ re tackling clutter, building new routines, or creating spaces that inspire calm and joy, starting small is key. Here are some simple yet powerful ideas to help you hit the ground running this January.

Organize, Simplify, + Thrive

1

Declutter with Purpose

Clear the physical clutter to make room for mental clarity. Set a Timer: Start with just 15 minutes a day to tackle a specific area your junk drawer, kitchen counters, or that ever-growing pile of mail.

Sort into Three Bins: Label them Keep, Donate, and Trash. Commit to immediately dealing with the latter two once you ’ re done.

Declutter as a Family: Turn it into a fun challenge by giving each family member a small box and a goal to fill it with items they no longer need. Reward everyone ’ s efforts with a family treat or activity.’

2

Reset Family Routines

Create structure that helps everyone thrive.

Morning Power Hour: Dedicate the first hour of the day to simple habits like making beds, having breakfast together, and planning the day ahead.

Shared Calendar: Use a large family calendar in a central spot to track activities, appointments, and even meal plans. Color-coding for each family member makes it even easier to follow.

Weekly Family Meetings: Pick a day to gather and discuss the week ahead, share wins, and adjust routines as needed.

3

Refresh Your Space

Small changes can breathe new life into your home.

Tidy Up Your Entryway: Add a simple basket for shoes, hooks for bags, and a tray for keys to keep the area functional and welcoming Switch Out Décor: Replace heavy holiday decorations with lighter, neutral items like cozy throws and fresh greenery.

Rearrange Your Furniture: Experiment with new layouts to create a fresh perspective without spending a dime.

Small Changes for a Big Impact

4

Focus on Small Wins

Change doesn’t have to be overwhelming. In fact, the smallest victories often pave the way for bigger successes

Set Daily Goals: Write down one small, actionable task each morning. Completing it will give you a sense of accomplishment and motivation to tackle the next.

Gratitude in Action: Keep a “gratitude jar” where everyone in the family can drop notes about what they’re thankful for. At the end of each month, read them together to celebrate life’s little joys

Tidy Together: Spend 10 minutes each evening tidying up as a family. It’s amazing what you can accomplish in such a short time and it keeps larger messes at bay.

These small habits might seem insignificant, but over time, they create a foundation for lasting change and a more harmonious home

5

Create Intentional Change

January is also about looking ahead with intention. Use this time to set the stage for a fulfilling and joyful year.

Vision Board Night: Gather the family for an evening of creativity. Use magazines, photos, and art supplies to make vision boards filled with your goals, dreams, and priorities. Display them as daily reminders of what you ’ re working toward.

Monthly Themes: Choose a focus for each month, such as “kindness,” “organization,” or “health.” Incorporate simple, fun activities that align with the theme to keep everyone engaged and inspired

Celebrate Progress: Don’t wait until the end of the year to celebrate your accomplishments. Acknowledge and reward even the smallest steps forward it keeps motivation high and spirits bright.

ERA Your NOT TO-DO LIST

IT’STIMETOPRIORITIZEYOU!

Enter the Not To-Do list: a liberating practice that focuses on unlearning behaviors, releasing guilt, and setting boundaries. It’s a roadmap for reclaiming your time, energy, and mental well-being by identifying what no longer serves you

For military spouses or anyone juggling complex roles and responsibilities this approach can be lifechanging. The relentless pace of military life, constant relocations, emotional load of managing a family, your career and supporting a partner’s demanding career often leaves little room for self-care or personal fulfillment But it doesn’t have to be this way

So, for 2025, let’s flip the script! This year, it’s not just about mapping out what we’ll do (cue the vision boards on the next pages) it’s about boldly declaring what we won’t do.

1. Stop Saying Yes to Everything

How many times have you said “ yes ” to something when your heart screamed “ no”? Whether it’s volunteering for another bake sale, taking on too many work projects, or overcommitting socially, constantly saying yes is the fastest route to burnout.

The Actionable Shift:

Practice Saying No: Start with gentle responses like, “Let me think about it and get back to you, ” or “I’d love to help, but my plate is full.” Give yourself permission to decline without guilt

Set Priorities: Write down your top goals for 2025 If a request doesn’t align with these, it’s an easy no.

2. Stop Putting Yourself Last

When everyone else’s needs your spouse, kids, friends, or coworkers come before your own, your well-being takes a backseat. This can lead to resentment, exhaustion, and even health issues

The Actionable Shift:

Schedule “You Time”: Block out non-negotiable self-care time, whether it’s a yoga class, a hobby, or simply enjoying a quiet cup of coffee Treat it like an important appointment

Delegate Without Guilt: Whether it’s asking your spouse to handle a household task or outsourcing chores, remember that you don’t have to carry every load alone.

3. Stop Comparing Yourself to Others

The Pain Point: Social media is a highlight reel, but it’s easy to forget that when scrolling through perfectly curated feeds For military spouses, the comparisons can be especially sharp envying someone ’ s PCS destination, their career, or how seamlessly they seem to “have it all together.”

The Actionable Shift:

Audit Your Feeds: Unfollow accounts that make you feel inadequate. Fill your feed with positivity and authenticity

Practice Gratitude: Each day, write down three things you ’ re grateful for Shifting your focus to what you have cultivates contentment.

4. Stop Overcommitting

From FRG events to hosting gatherings and joining every support group, there’s an unspoken pressure to “show up ” for the military community at every turn. While these connections can be valuable, overcommitting often leads to unnecessary stress

The Actionable Shift:

Define Your Engagement Level: Decide how much time and energy you want to dedicate to military life activities, and stick to it.

Politely Decline: “I’m taking a step back this season ” is an easy, respectful way to set boundaries without guilt.

5. Stop Neglecting Your Own Goals

Military life often feels like an obstacle course for personal dreams. Whether it’s pursuing a career, finishing a degree, or starting a business, your goals can get sidelined while supporting someone else’s mission.

The Actionable Shift:

Write Down Your Goals: Be specific about what you want to achieve in 2025 Break each goal into smaller, actionable steps.

Carve Out Dedicated Time: Even 15 minutes a day can make a difference. Consistency is key.

Build Your Support Network: Find communities online or in-person that encourage and uplift your ambitions

6. Stop Letting Guilt Dictate Your Choices

Guilt can show up in countless ways feeling bad for taking a break, for saying no, or for putting yourself first. This guilt becomes a mental drain that holds you back.

The Actionable Shift:

Reframe Self-Care: Remind yourself that taking care of yourself is a responsibility, not an indulgence You can’t pour from an empty cup.

Let Go of Perfectionism: Celebrate progress over perfection. Even small wins are worth recognizing.

7. Stop Thinking You Have to Do It Alone

Military life can feel isolating, especially after a PCS or during deployments Asking for help may feel vulnerable, but going it alone only increases stress.

The Actionable Shift:

Build a Support System: Join local groups, virtual communities, or military spouse networks. You’ll be surprised by how much connection is out there. Communicate Your Needs: Be clear with your partner, friends, or family about how they can support you

8. Stop Letting Military Life Define You Entirely

While military life is a huge part of your reality, it’s not all of who you are. Losing sight of your identity beyond the role of “military spouse ” or “caregiver” can leave you feeling unfulfilled.

The Actionable Shift:

Revisit Old Passions: Dust off a hobby, interest, or dream you shelved This is your time to rediscover who you are.

Set Personal Milestones: Create goals that have nothing to do with military life. Let 2025 be about your personal growth and happiness.

Your 2025 Not-To-Do List isn’t about quitting it’s about reclaiming By letting go of what drains you, you create space for what truly matters This isn’t just about subtracting tasks; it’s about adding joy, balance, and peace to your life.

Step-by-Step Guide to Creating a Vision Board

Creating a vision board isn’t complicated, and it’s something anyone can do. Here’s how to get started:

Step 1: Define Your Goals

Start by figuring out what you want to achieve in different areas of your life health, career, family, personal growth, and more. Write down specific goals that inspire and motivate you.

What kind of life do you want?

What have you been dreaming of but haven’t quite made a priority? What goals have you been putting off?

Step 2: Gather Your Supplies

You’ll need a few basic things: A poster board or corkboard

Magazines, printed images, and quotes

Scissors and glue or push pins

Markers, pens, or stickers

Decorative items like washi tape, stickers, or embellishments

Step 3: Collect Inspiring Images & Words

Go through magazines, print out photos, or find words that represent your goals. Look for images and phrases that spark joy or reflect what you want to create. Images: If fitness is a goal, include pictures of healthy meals, workouts, or active lifestyles

Words: Use affirmations or inspiring statements like “I am capable,” “Success is within reach,” or “My home is a sanctuary.”

Step 4: Assemble Your Vision Board

Once you ’ ve gathered everything, lay out your materials and start arranging. Create a layout that feels inspiring to you. Place your vision board somewhere you’ll see it daily like your bedroom, office, or any space you use often Get creative! Add stickers, washi tape, or other decorative touches to make it visually appealing.

Step 5: Reflect and Adjust

Your vision board isn’t set in stone. It’s something you can revisit and update as your goals evolve. Check in regularly, make adjustments, and remind yourself of what you ’ re working toward.

Vision boards keep me grounded. They remind me of what I’m working toward, and I check in with mine every day to stay motivated.

She has always found joy in building community, becoming a steady presence for other military spouses during tough times. But in 2023, her own world was shaken when she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer.

The Diagnosis

The diagnosis came unexpectedly Samantha had been experiencing persistent bloating, abdominal pain, and fatigue symptoms she initially brushed off as the stress of managing a household during a deployment. When the symptoms persisted, she listened to her instincts and sought medical advice. Tests revealed stage I ovarian cancer. “When I heard the words ‘ you have cancer, ’ it felt like the air was knocked out of me, ” Samantha recalls. “But almost immediately, I thought, ‘I have to fight. I have too much to live for.’”

The Fight Begins

Samantha’s treatment plan included surgery to remove the cancer, followed by intensive chemotherapy. Each step of the journey tested her physical and emotional strength.

“I learned quickly that fighting cancer isn’t just about the medical treatments,” she says. “It’s about keeping your mind and heart strong, even when you feel like giving up ”

Her military community rallied around her, providing meals, childcare, and emotional support Friends organized fundraisers to help with medical costs, and her family stood by her side every step of the way. “It was humbling to see how many people cared,” Samantha says. “It reminded me that no one fights alone.” Living with Purpose

Now in remission, Samantha approaches life with a renewed sense of purpose. She’s using her experience to raise awareness about ovarian cancer, particularly within the military community, where access to consistent healthcare can sometimes be challenging due to relocations and deployments.

“I want to remind women, especially military spouses, to listen to their bodies,” Samantha emphasizes “Ovarian cancer symptoms can be subtle, but early detection saves lives.”

She has become an advocate for educating military families about the importance of preventive care, screenings, and self-advocacy in medical settings. A Message of Hope

CANDLE CARE oak leaf lane

How to Care for Your Oak Leaf Lane

Soy Candle

To ensure you get the most out of your candle, proper care is essential. Here’s how to enjoy a safe and clean burn every time:

1. Trim the Wick

Before lighting your candle, always trim the wick to about ¼ inch This prevents the flame from getting too large and reduces soot, ensuring a clean, even burn and helps your candle last longer and keeps it looking beautiful

2. Let It Burn Long Enough

On your first burn, allow the wax to melt evenly across the entire surface of the candle. This prevents tunneling, where wax builds up around the edges, and ensures your candle burns evenly all the way down. Typically, this takes 2-3 hours, so plan accordingly.

3. Burn Safely

Never leave your candle unattended or burning for more than 4 hours at a time Place it on a heat-resistant surface, away from drafts, flammable objects, and out of reach of pets and children.

4. Reuse the Jar

Once your candle has burned down to about ½ inch of wax, it’s time to retire it. Clean out the jar and repurpose it for storage, as a planter, or as a charming decorative piece it’s too beautiful not to reuse!

From Marine Corps to Media

Joe Ramirez knows what it means to serve. As a retired Marine, he’s lived through the highs and lows of military life, from the camaraderie of his brothers and sisters in arms to the challenges that come with transitioning to civilian life But for Joe, service didn’t stop when he took off the uniform it simply evolved.

Joe founded VetStream with one goal in mind: to create a space where veterans, military families, and anyone curious about the military experience could come together, share stories, and find inspiration.

Joe spent his career in the Marine Corps, embracing every challenge with grit and determination But when his time in service came to an end, like so many veterans, he found himself asking, What’s next? The answer came from his deep love for storytelling and his desire to continue serving the military community in a new way. “I’ve always believed that the stories of veterans and military families are some of the most powerful stories out there,” Joe explains. “But they’re often left untold. I wanted to change that.” And so, VetStream TV was born a platform that celebrates the military experience in all its complexity, from the everyday moments to the extraordinary.

Why VetStream TV Matters

For Joe, VetStreamTV isn’t just about entertainment; it’s about creating a sense of belonging. “The military community is so unique,” he says. “There’s a bond that’s hard to describe unless you ’ ve lived it. VetStream is my way of honoring that bond and making sure those stories have a place to be shared.”

Check out VetStream TV today and be part of the movement.

The platform is packed with content that speaks directly to veterans and their families: uplifting documentaries, dramas created by military filmmakers, wellness programs, and even shows designed for kids. But at its heart, VetStreamTV is about people telling their stories, honoring their sacrifices, and showing the world what it truly means to serve.

For Joe, VetStream is personal It’s his way of continuing to serve, of giving back to the community that shaped him. “Our stories matter,” he says. “They’re part of our legacy not just for us, but for future generations. VetStream is here to make sure those stories are heard ”

VetStream TV is more than a streaming service. It’s a home for the voices of veterans and military families a place where every story counts and every person matters. And for Joe Ramirez, that’s what it’s all about
