SOLIO KITCHEN PROJECTS 4 year plan FURAHA PRIMARY SCHOOL (Village 1) SOLIO DEB PRIMARY SCHOOL (Village 2) BAHATI PRIMARY SCHOOL (Village 3) TETU PRIMARY SCHOOL (Village 4) MATHINGIRA PRIMARY SCHOOL (Village 5) MKANDAMIA PRIMARY SCHOOL (Village 6) Total amount requesting for funding is 550,000 /= per kitchen in the 7 village Ideally, we would like to see at least the kitchen constructed within a year. Francis Kioni, Moving Mountains project manager, estimates the cost of each kitchen and energy saving stove at 550,000/= Kenya Shillings. The Jiko can cook food for up to 500 students maximum. Over the years we have seen the improvement and development in academic performance of children once such projects are implemented in the schools. The children are more comfortable and attentive in school once they get a meal a day at school. With the new energy saving Jiko there will be positive impact on environmental as firewood will be saved a lot unlike what they are cooking with currently. The Kitchen will be clean and hygienic and so will the food.
PROBLEM STATEMENT: Since the government in 2010 build 6 classrooms in each of the 7 villages. The schools have been developing slowly with Furaha Primary school – 225 students, Solio DEB primary school -487 students, Bahati primary school – 280 students, Tetu Primary school- 225 students, Mathingira Primary school – 206 students, Mkandamia Primary school – 200 students and Baraka primary school – 220 students. The school have now good classrooms but the kitchens are still in makeshift structures which are not ideal for cooking in. The student’s meals are prepared in a 3 stone fire which not only consumes a lot of firewood but that means that the students have to look for firewood in the already depleted forests and it is many Kilometres away. PROJECT OBJECTIVES: The main objective of the project is to build a kitchen that when food Is prepared it is clean and in a proper building .The other objective is to have a Jiko that not only saves energy but is environmentally friendly not only for the students but to the community at large . The time frame for building one kitchen is 4 weeks. The project will be implemented in 6 stages. Stage 1 – Preparing the foundation Stage 2 – Setting up the wall by putting shutters Stage 3 –Putting in the mesh and the mortar, when dry removing the shutters Stage 4 – Putting the Jiko in place and Sufuria, doing the finishing work of the Kitchen Stage 5 –Handing over the Kitchen to the school committee and children
