Welcome to this special issue of Movie Mag where we finish our countdown to Halloween and do a watch a day in honor of Spooky Season!

A Childhood Classic That Works Every Fall By: Wil Brienza Casper is a movie that I grew up watching at my grandparent’s house on my favorite movie media format...VHS! My grandma owned this and Casper Meets Wendy, which were both watched religiously by my sister and I. Now that I’m older it has obvious flaws, but the nostalgia still hits home for me when watching this. I watched this with my fiancé in Salem, Massachusetts and the vibes were immaculate and I definitely enjoyed more than she did. The story is both fun and heartwarming and fills you with good feelings every time you watch it. Christina Ricci is the star of this film and she per usual does a phenomenal job. My favorite scene from Casper is towards the beginning of the movie where Carrigan and Dibs both discover that the estate she inherited was haunted and they send in a fellow Ghostbuster, Ray Stantz, to which the ghosts appear to be too much for him to even handle. This is definitely a required taste, but I love it.

Is Casper a Little Bit More Than I Remember?

By: Kory King I watched Casper a few times as a kid, but it was one of those movies I never knew what the plot or the point was. All I remembered about this film is that it’s Christina Ricci hanging out with an invisible dead-boy in a spooky old mansion with his three uncles. On this rewatch I wanted to get the movie out of the way early, so I put it on at 11:00am and finished around 1:00pm. The movie is no better than the bits and pieces I remembered from when I was a small child, but it did come with a few surprises. References, insane cameos, and pop culture nonsense rules this film in a way I didn’t expect. Beyond those surprises it was about as dull as The Addams Family, but it didn’t have nearly the same amount of magic and fun. The cast is just not as entertaining to watch scene to scene. Casper really isn’t for me but if it was the last movie on earth, there’s plenty of things to enjoy about it.

Is it Even Halloween Without Hocus Pocus?

By: Wil Brienza Hocus Pocus is another movie that was engrained in my childhood. Yet, this watch was even more incredible than usual. Another watch in Salem, Massachusetts with my fiancé and what helped this movie be even better than usual is getting to see some of the movie sites in person the very next day. This movie is truly a Halloween season staple, that if it fails to make it on your watchlist in October, I’d go as far to say as you didn’t even celebrate the spooky season. A simple yet incredible story that stands the test of time no matter your age. My favorite scene from Hocus Pocus is our group of protagonists believe they defeat the Sanderson sisters by burning them in the school and they celebrate afterwards. As a kid, I always thought this was the ending and I loved it. I still love the rest of the movie, don’t worry.

Like I said before this a fall staple, and if you are looking for a movie to pass the fall vibe check, this is towards the top.

A New Halloween Tradition Starts Now! By: Kory King Straight up… No foreplay… Only real truths here… I had never seen Hocus Pocus, and I have had zero desire to watch it.

Not because it looks stupid or any other ridiculous reason. I just don’t care to watch family movies for the first time especially if I’m by myself. I even asked Wil if I could skip this movie on the list because I’m gonna miss the irritation I give people when saying I’m a movie buff who has never seen Hocus Pocus. But I’m gonna explain this to you, if you don’t have parents, friends, siblings, or a significant other who loves this movie, why the hell would ya? Well, all this background aside, this movie is awesome. I loved every second of this watch, and I cannot wait to watch this again next year. I knew it would be covered in Halloween feelings and vibes, but the movie is also just very entertaining. The leads are all great and I had a fun time with this one. An absolute gem that I recommend.

Beetlejuice Shines Bright on the Silver Screen By: Wil Brienza I get to say that I saw Beetlejuice in theaters. To wrap up the Salem trip, my fiancé and I caught this film at The Cabot on the big screen for a 35th anniversary celebration. This activity was her pick due to it being her favorite movie of alltime. While I don’t love it as much as her, I still love this movie just as much as most. There isn’t much to dislike with Beetlejuice, featuring a great cast, a fun story, and dialogue that is very quotable. Michael Keaton is such a great pick for Betelgeuse and the supporting characters were also casted perfectly. I am truly excited to see what they do with Beetlejuice 2 in the coming year. My favorite scene from Beetlejuice is the commercial that introduces the Maitland’s to the idea of Betelgeuse. This is a commercial that would have me considering it as an option! Another film to throw on the list of hits from Tim Burton.

Good Lord, This Movie Ages Like Fine Wine By: Kory King What an all-time great film. I know for a fact not many people will even try to disagree with that statement. I can’t tell you how or when I watched Beetlejuice for the first time, but I remember seeing the ad for it every time I popped in my Batman (1989) DVD. If you know me, then you know I grew up on this movie and it changed the course of my life permanently. So, when I found out Betelgeuse was played by Batman himself, oh buddy… I was in. Ever since then I’ve seen this movie over a dozen times mostly by coincidence. My grandmother (who raised me) always left any Halloween movie playing during the Halloween season. Years later I own this film and try to watch it at least once a year but usually not during Halloween time. I had a great night watching this movie with Wil’s dogs in the dead of night. I’m severely entertained, and I am in love with the nostalgia this film provides on every rewatch.

The One That Saved the Slasher Genre By: Wil Brienza When it comes to the slasher genre Scream is right up there with the best of them. In 1996 this movie came out and took the world by storm. The slasher genre was in a lull and Scream came in and put the genre back on its feet. This movie took all the tropes of a slasher movie and made parody of them in such a way that makes it one of the most iconic horror movies of all-time. With a great group of characters we love to follow and all the rules of how to survive being told to us this is a film that never gets old. My favorite performance is from Matthew Lillard as Stu Macher. I believe Lillard is an underrated talent and he puts on quite a show in Scream. My favorite scene from Scream is the revel scene where we discover who the killers are and you finally get to see if you were correct in this whodunit horror masterpiece. If you haven’t seen Scream you are either not a horror fan or are missing out big time. The franchise itself is consistently good and the first will always stand the test of time.

Scream is a Franchise I Never Knew I Needed By: Kory King I was the moron who came in onto Scream too late. I let the internet and meme culture spoil the killer in the first film.

And then I watched Scream (2022) which is basically a re-hash of the first movie in a clever way. But I watched every Halloween movie in order for the first time and I needed a new franchise to watch through. I finally watched the original Scream for the first time in October of 2022 and I watched the next four films in two days because I was enjoying them so much. Scream is as solidified as a movie that gets a rewatch every year, and I have already seen it twice this year. On this rewatch I watched it in the night up in the studio and I took a nostalgic walk back through memory lane. I felt like I was right back in my old apartment watching scream alone on a rainy night.

Universal Monster Movies Always Win By: Wil Brienza Most people my age cannot get into the Universal Monster movies, to which I feel really bad at what they miss out on.

The Wolf Man is my second favorite Universal Monster behind The Creature from the Black Lagoon. This story always captivated me and made me fall in love with werewolf lore at a young age. Featuring Lon Chaney Jr. and Bela Lugosi, this is another very well acted monster movie from well before my time. This movie also felt way ahead of it times with great werewolf transformations and cinematography I truly love, even if the movie has no color. My favorite scene from The Wolf Man is the very first attack we see from the wolf in which he attacks and kills a grave digger. This scene follows our first transformation scene which is also a great scene. As for the grave digger scene we get to see the fully transformed wolf come around the tree and it is an iconic shot, that I have always loved. I wish the Universal Monsters got a little more respect from my generation, but if nothing else The Wolf Man is worth the 70 minute watch.

This Felt Like a Boring Version of a Movie I’ve seen By: Kory King The Wolf Man is a film I have never seen and knew virtually nothing about, and I was not disappointed. I watched The Wolf Man late in the night and was able to keep my phone down for most of the movie. It reminded me heavily of Marvel’s Werewolf by Night which happens to be my favorite project in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Though I was slightly annoyed with the shot selections in the film, I still appreciated it for all its impressive effects and transitions.

The transformation scene of the man turning into a wolf was actually quite impressive. There were some clever ways of hiding the limitations of filmmaking at the time and I believe this film will stand the test of time. I had a decent time watching it and I would take this film over some of the other movies on our Halloween watchlist.

David Fincher Doesn’t Miss By: Wil Brienza It is no secret that David Fincher is one of if not my favorite directors. He is a perfect example of a director that doesn’t make a bad movie, and Se7en is no different. This is actually my favorite of all of his movies, but it is close because they are all so good. The concept of Se7en is so incredible, that I knew before I even watched it that I would at least enjoy it.

Now this obviously wasn’t my first watch, but this movie truly gets better with every watch. Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman have incredible on screen chemistry and deliver performances that are near the top for both. Kevin Spacey might be in it a limited amount, but he is such a great antagonist and truly instills fear into viewers. My favorite scene from Se7en is the iconic ending scene where we get the “What’s in the box?” quote. It is so out of left field and is one of my favorite endings to any movie all-time. The acting, aesthetic, and compelling story all make this a top tier film.

Se7en Owns my Heart By: Kory King I watched Se7en for one reason, and one reason only... The Batman. Matt Reeves, director of The Batman, mentioned Se7en on one of the main inspirations for his dark noir detective flick. So, in 2020 when the world was on pause, I watched Se7en in my new apartment with my best friend, and watched in my pitch-black room while my roommate was gone. I had no clue what I was in for. This film gives me a new type of nostalgia when I see rooms lit only by warm colored lamps, blinding amounts of rain, and music that will turn your gut upside down. I watched Se7en in my studio at my house. The lights were off, the night was young, and I was looking forward to experiencing my favorite David Fincher film. (Zodiac is close) I still enjoy watching Zodiac in the nighttime because there is something so moody about the sound design and the set design. It’s a disgusting film that is rooted in early 2000’s noir/metal films.

Another Great Installment in a Great Franchise By: Wil Brienza Evil Dead Rise does one thing that not a lot of horror franchises can say which is make the franchise five for five on making good films. There is not a bad movie in the Evil Dead franchise and sue me, but Evil Dead Rise is in my opinion the best of the franchise just edging out Army of Darkness. It is hard to find consistency in horror franchises like you see here. My first watch was in theaters, but this movie was still just as good watching from home. This is the scariest installment in the franchise and the movie does a great job at creating fears in things you’d never be scared of. The acting is top notch especially from Alyssa Sutherland as Ellie, the possessed mother throughout the film. My favorite scene from Evil Dead Rise is when a cheese grater is used to shred the back of a calf leading to a cringe like no other.

Evil Dead Rise Still Creeps me Out By: Kory King Evil Dead Rise is the first Evil Dead film I ever experienced. I never got around to watching the rest of the films in the franchise so Evil Dead Rise was just the one I saw first by default. I was working in Michigan in early 2023 so I decided to watch Evil Dead Rise in a nearby theater in Flint, Michigan. When I walked out of the movie, I called Wil immediately because Wil had reminded me once a day that I need to find time to watch Evil Dead Rise. Rewatching the film five months later I can say I appreciate this film even more on a rewatch because I have now gone back and seen the first film. I see all the inspiration that was taken and saw where all the inspiration came from. When I first watched the film, I was more creeped out due to the amazing sound mixing. I kept hearing whispers like the demons were getting in my head too. I repeatedly turned my head around to see if anyone was sitting near me. It was a viewing experience I can’t ever forget.

Great Cast + Solid Story = Worthwhile Watch By: Wil Brienza Growing up I caught glimpses of my dad watching The Amityville Horror, but this was my first complete watch of the film. Overall I enjoyed this movie. The cast is incredible, led by Josh Brolin and Margot Kidder. Brolin portrays some of the best face acting in this film and it makes you feel exactly how he feels throughout the film. The story is unsettling and some scenes are jaw dropping. This will definitely be a movie I revisit in the future and I am very happy it made it on our list this year. The ending was kind of abrupt which lowered my score a little, but other than that this a worthwhile watch. My favorite scene from The Amityville Horror is when the boys are playing a trick on Amy when Kathy catches them forcing them to turn around when one leaves his hand under the window which is slammed shut by a ghostly force. It is both a jump scare and a shot that makes you feel the pain in your hand as well.

Is The Amityville Horror Underrated?

By: Kory King I had never seen The Amityville Horror prior to this watch and I apparently knew nothing about this film. I knew about the reboot with Ryan Reynolds from 2005 but I didn’t even know the correct story, it would seem. My introduction to this story began with me watching The Conjuring 2 which lightly brushes up on the history of the Amityville house’s original tragedy. Because of that I figured the story of both Amityville films would be the story of the original killings that happened in that house, and I had a crude awakening when watching this film for the first time with Wil. It seems to be one of the original house haunting stories in film and I think it’s an automatic classic for me, thanks to that fact. I’m not sure this movie will end up being a yearly regular for me, but I enjoyed nearly every minute of this film. Not one of my favorite oldies, but a classic in my books.

We Need More Movies Like This By: Wil Brienza Trick ‘r Treat is yet another Halloween season staple. As a huge advocate for more movies set on or around Halloween and a fan of horror anthologies, this movie is made for me. Outside of the school bus story, I enjoy every moment of Trick ‘r Treat. This film hits the ground running with an insane on screen kill that leaves your jaw on the floor. Then it continues with a crazy principal story, ghost stories, and even werewolf and vampires! We also get the iconic character of Sam from this film who is disguised as a trick or treater but is much more sinsiter than that. My favorite scene from Trick ‘r Treat is the opening scene which is an iconic cold open that leaves a lady lifeless with a pumpkin sucker stuck in her mouth as Sam strikes early on in the film. Like I stated before this is another film that I watch every Halloween and encourage everyone else to do the same.

Trick ‘r Treat is More Treat Than Trick By: Kory King I’ve been aware of Trick ‘r Treat ever since 2007. My sister loved watching Trick ‘r Treat and owned a poster of the film inside her dark, cold, basement room. I always questioned how and why there was a kid with a pumpkin head wearing a sack but was too afraid to ever give it a watch. Now at the ripe age of 22 I finally get to have none of my questions answered but I was happy having been given no real backstory on the kid. On a dark October night Wil and I went to the house where a group of our buddies live, and watched it for the first time stuffing my face with a Sheetz flatbread sub. I was the only person watching it for the first time and I was more than content with a less focused watch, where we didn’t take the film too seriously. It’s not as great as other entries in this series, but I will be watching it every holiday season.

It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown

I Believe in the Great Pumpkin By: Wil Brienza Okay, I have used this term a lot, but this is another Halloween staple. I mean come on, It’s the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown has been watched by me every Halloween for as long as I can remember. It is a nostalgic watch and takes me back to simpler times with my siblings and family at family-friendly Halloween functions. A very short watch, this film made for television flies by, and is very rewatchable. A quick captivating story from the Peanuts gang we all know and love, how can you not give It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown a chance? My favorite scene from It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown is when the Peanuts gang goes trick or treating and every time they get done at a house they talk about their haul to which Charlie Brown repeatedly says, “I got a rock.” Even at 24 years old that scene draws a chuckle from me and I catch myself quoting it all the time no matter the time of year.

Sometimes Things are Kind of Cute By: Kory King Look I don’t use this word often but, It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown is just cute. There’s no way around it.

There’s no way to sound cool when saying it. That movie is just cute. I’ve never seen this movie before, I think. I say that because I know I’ve seen some classic Charlie Brown films in elementary school with no clue of which ones. So as far as I am concerned, this is my first time. I watched It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown with Wil and his fiancé in their home, with the two mutts’. The movie was as short as I expected, but 1,000 times more interesting than I expected as a single young adult. Every ten minutes I shot a look at Wil and proclaimed, “Dude… I think I like this movie… like a lot.”

Because I was in such disbelief of how I could enjoy a cartoon from the 60’s that I have no nostalgia or bias for. This one is a yearly watch now.

Expectations Were High, and They Were Met By: Wil Brienza You ready for this... before this marathon, I had never seen Psycho before. This Alfred Hitchcock classic has eluded me my entire life which is insane with my love for horror, especially slashers. This is the film that started it all for the genre, and I truly loved the film. Albeit a slow start, the story is compelling, Anthony Perkins is amazing, and the score is as iconic as it gets. I watched this before a Halloween party and I got excited when I walked into the party and the film was on the television even thought I finished it minutes prior. Although the replay value might not stand out as much as other slashers for me, I am happy I finally got around to this film. Hitchcock does such a great job at creating suspense and a twist at the end that would have been even more incredible had I known nothing going into it. My favorite scene from Psycho is the killing of Arbogast, because I did not expect a jump scare like that in a movie from 1960.

An Undeniable Classic That I Like at Best By: Kory King The first time I watched Psycho was in the second semester of my freshman year of college. April of 2020 I was at home due to the… Well, you remember it. I had to pick a movie to cover in my film history class final paper, and I chose a movie with an iconic score, due to my desired career. Therefore, I chose Psycho from 1960. This watch was much more different than sitting in my parents’ dark basement watching this film on my wall via my new projector. I rewatched this film in the middle of day lying in my bed after a late-running Halloween party. I was freshly awake and realized I missed any chance to watch Psycho the night before and got to it as fast as I could before starting my day. On a rewatch I found Anthony Perkins even more standout but was less enthused on a second viewing. I still like it, and think it’s a classic, but this one might be a two-time ride, for me.

Is This the Best Horror Movie of All-Time?

By: Wil Brienza There is a reason this is the only horror movie to ever win Best Picture at the Academy Awards and that is because it might just be the greatest horror movie of all-time. For me I’d probably rank it at the top of the genre, despite some saying it isn’t really a horror movie. I’ll hear them out as it is more of a thriller, but I consider that a sub-genre of horror anyway. Anthony Hopkins and Jodie Foster deliver two iconic performances which was solidified when they both took home an Academy Award for their performances. This is a movie that I fell in love with upon my first watch, and I watch it a couple times a year, it’s that good. Jonathan Demme created great suspense and a monster in Hannibal Lecter that is one of the best in cinema. My favorite scene from The Silence of the Lambs is Lecter’s escape scene. It is gory, intense, and so well written, that there aren’t many scenes better in horror. My god, this movie is immaculate.

Hot Diggity, This Movie Gets Better By: Kory King The Silence of the Lambs is a masterpiece and I’m far from caring about how cold that take is. Funnily enough this is only my second viewing of this film, but the more time I spent looking at this film, the harder it got to not think about restarting it as soon as it’s over. My first viewing of this film was last year in 2022 with my now roommates at their old apartment. We were all looking for something to watch for the first time during the fall and stumbled upon this Amazon Prime recommendation after some scrolling. We all shook our heads and immediately immersed ourselves. This time around, after watching Psycho, I had a full day that ended with watching The Silence of the Lambs on Wil’s couch after he fell asleep. I had a long day, but I was more than content rewatching an amazing film in the dead of night alone, and immersed.

A Wild Ride with a Great Landing By: Wil Brienza A Clockwork Orange is insane, but very good. If I didn’t know Stanley Kubrick was the director before, watching the film would have given it away. Although there is controversy due to the graphic violence, I thought the story itself was very compelling. I didn’t know much about this other than it was a Kubrick film. Malcolm McDowell was phenomenal and it was a pleasant surprised finding out he was the lead after all these years of not seeing this film. The score is incredible, with a theme that will be added to my movie music playlist. My favorite scene from A Clockwork Orange is what causes Alex to get arrested and that is him accidentally killing a lady with a sculpture of vulgar shapes. This scene is just so out of pocket, that it catches your attention, and the art displayed after the strike to the head is wild. Again, this movie is all over the place but it is very well done. Also, I love plain milk, but I don’t think I’m a psychopath!

God This Movie is Weird By: Kory King Yet I love it. When I first watched A Clockwork Orange it wasn’t in the most flattering circumstances, but I loved it anyways. It was post-Christmas of 2021, and I was coming down with that sickness everyone talked about. (Again, you know the one) So I figured the best thing for me to do was lock myself in my room away from civilization and be the lazy son of a bitch I always wish I could be. I had this film on my list for a long long time but I never knew a single thing about what happens in this film. This time around almost a year later I got to experience this film outside of my lonely dark room in my parents’ basement, and I watched it with the one and only, Wil Brienza. He woke me up at 8:00am after I spent all night busting out some reviews until 4:00am. I was tired as hell, but I loved rewatching this with my best friend, and seeing his first reaction.

The Movie I Watch on Repeat By: Wil Brienza It doesn’t get much better than Halloween. This was my fifth time watching this movie just this year alone if that tells you anything. I got the chance to watch it twice in theaters which was another amazing experience with one of my favorite movies of all-time. When it comes to the horror genre it comes down to Halloween and The Silence of the Lambs and depending on the day that might change. John Carpenter and Debra Hill created a story that has captivated audiences for decades and I don’t see that changing any time soon. Donald Pleasance as Dr. Sam Loomis is almost as iconic as the shape itself when it comes to horror movie icons. There is no complaints from when it comes to this masterpiece from 1978. My favorite scene from Halloween is when Michael Myers adds a victim in Bob. This is the most iconic kill in this first film and we get the very first held tit when Michael is admiring his work.

Yeah, This Will Always Be my Jam By: Kory King I can’t pinpoint the first time I saw this film because it was when I was a kid and I caught it on TV thanks to my family forcing me to watch it. I know I was young between the ages 5-10 because that’s when I started having nightmares based around the shape, Michael Myers. I was petrified by fear and hated watching this movie more than literally anything in the world. Now I’m a fully grown man who gave this franchise a chance when he was looking to hunt down the movies from his past and fell in love with horror genre (thanks to this movie). It was 3:38am and I was watching Halloween on October 31st. My dark room in my own house gets to help conclude my 31 Nights of Halloween marathon with the movie that was always destined to win. It’s been a fun ride this October of 2023 and I hope to see you in the next year.
