BoConcept for the city centre THE UNITY BUILDING

The established interior designer will open and manage two retail units on the ground floor of the RIBA award-winning Unity building on Chapel Street. The new store covers just under 5,000 sq ft in the building, where Elaine Cunningham Interiors has previously furnished several high-end apartments. The new store will stock a full range of high-end furniture by the global brand, in response to a demand from customers across Liverpool,

Elaine Cunningham, of Elaine Cunningham Interiors on Aigburth Road, is set to open a new BoConcept store in the city centre. Manchester, London, the Isle of Man, and the UK. Elaine Cunningham commented: “We chose the Unity building as it is a landmark in the city and fits BoConcept’s vision for a new store and is easily accessible for all our customers. There is a demand in Liverpool for the high-end brand, and I can see it quickly becoming a destination store in the city centre.” The Aigburth Road store will

continue to stock a number of high-end brands, including Designers Guild, Osborne & Little, Cole & Son and Brian Yates, and will then expand its range of products, particularly curtains, lighting, paints, wallpaper and furniture. Work is currently ongoing and the new store is set for a grand opening in September, more details of which will be announced in Your Move.

St Helens based agents Burns & Reid believe prospective buyers will be attracted to the unique style of the new build homes. The Midshires are located in the Knotty Ash conservation area and feature 13 townhouses and semi-detached properties. The cul-de-sac development comprises five different property designs of two and three bedroom homes. Burns & Reid director Stuart Reid commented: “I think it’s the design more than anything that will appeal to buyers. There’s a unique style to the development, with a zinc plate finish to each property. Each home includes gas, central heating and cloakrooms and some have ensuite facilities. The Midshires is close to the town centre and I think it will really appeal to first and second time buyers.” Prices at the Midshires range from £149,950 to £159,950. Fitting out a new vision Capricorn Kitchens is celebrating another large contract to fit out a number of rental and social housing properties. Holidaying in Britain is back in vogue, and by investing in a mobile home for the family, you can make your trips more flexible and varied and save money on accommodation as you travel.

How to enjoy a second home without a second mortgage

Home comforts While many families in Liverpool have enjoyed visiting the beaches, countryside and mountain scenery of the Lake District and North Wales for many years, the appeal of holidaying ‘at home’ in the British Isles has soared due to the current economic climate and a greater appreciation of our own assets. Modern mobile homes come with all the mod cons a family could need during a short 26 Your Move

break and are much improved on their predecessors of recent decades in terms of comfort, style and storage. ‘Glamp’ it up For this reason, ‘glamping’ has been coined to describe the picture perfect family holiday envisioned with happy children playing in front of a camp fire, accessorised (the children as well as the fireside) in Cath Kidston and big smiles. Coupled with M&S’s

recent ad campaign for its swimwear on a British beach, the traditional UK holiday is really making a comeback as families choose to save money and cut the carbon in air miles to experience the best of our own heritage and scenery. For those who already shop locally, cook organically and make do and mend, spending a week in a tent or a caravan is a welcome break, but even if you’re new to the idea of a second or holiday home with

wheels or in canvas there’s certainly a solution for you. Pitch it right Buying a tent for the family is much cheaper and therefore less of a commitment than other options when making a first-time foray into holiday home territory. As tents increase in size to accommodate four to six people, so the price increases, but two person tents can be found reasonably cheaply in

Page 27

freedom to move around the country and find cheap family holidays, and they give you a good base to explore the countryside. Caravans can be made into a real home from home. You know what you'll get when you arrive and it’s great for the children because you can leave toys for them. Because they’re self-catered they’re more relaxed than a hotel and on safe sites children can be given freedom to roam. If you’re with friends then everyone looks out for each other’s children.”

supermarkets, particularly if you haven’t camped before and want to learn the ropes. If you decide to invest a larger sum however, you can expect a good deal more for your money. Modern designs are often colourful and aesthetically pleasing, and offer better waterproofing and protection from sun and wind than those you remember from your teenage years. Consider space and as a guide view a six man tent as suitable for a maximum of four adults and two small children. John Lewis offer a range of camping products suitable for the family, including the £99 two man Gelert Quick Pitch Quest tent, and the easy to pitch Gelert DS4, a £119 family model. Carry on caravanning Mobile caravans are easily transportable to any number of caravan parks which charge a rent for the week or weekend. Other ‘static’ caravans can be bought or rented at established sites across the UK. The Talacre Beach caravan site in North Wales offers a range of new and pre-owned static caravans from £14,995, while

the Skiddaw View facility in the Lake District provides luxury properties to rent, featuring bedrooms, bathroom, kitchen and dining area, for around £300 per week. Freedom to roam Caravans are ideal for children because they’re surrounded by space for

Camper vans Camper vans, sometimes known as ‘campers’ or motorcaravans are van-like to handle when driving. Affordable models appear mainly to be vans fitted out for sleeping accommodation, which is ideal if you want to visit some different sites and don’t mind prioritising travel over a luxury interior. During camping, the pop-up roof can be raised and they usually have a small kitchen with a refrigerator and a gas hob or grill. Lighting runs off the leisure battery (not the van’s battery) or AC power from the campsite and larger models may

Barges Canal barges are also appreciating a surge in popularity, with the renaissance no better signified than by the £22m Liverpool canal link project, putting the city firmly on the map as a leisure tourist destination. The extension to the Leeds – Liverpool canal passes the world famous Three Graces and has been shortlisted for the prime minister’s “Better Public Building” award. New barges start from around £20,000 and come with the costs of maintenance, license and general running costs. A better option may be to rent or time share. Barges at are available from around £700 per week. Home from home While crippling exchange rates await you on a foreign holiday, Britain is expecting a scorching summer to lift the spirits of a nation adapting to a new financial climate. So take to the open road this year and appreciate the treasures that await at home.

Regulations to stop rogue agents

Property hotspot tempts buyers

A Liverpool solicitor has welcomed government plans to regulate all lettings and management agents.

Prices have been cut on properties at the Rosemount development in Anfield. ROSEMOUNT DEVELOPMENT, ANFIELD

Developers Keepmoat Homes has reduced the price of its six remaining homes and is offering a shared equity scheme to reduce the amount buyers need to borrow. Buyers need only a 75 per cent mortgage and will have no deposit to pay. The remainder is funded by Keepmoat Homes, with no payments on the loan due for up

to 10 years. If eligible, buyers would be able to snap up a two bed apartment for £55,496, a three bedroom home for £74,996, or a four bedroom townhouse for £93,746. Matt Ellery, sales manager at Keepmoat Homes North West, commented: “These homes offer exceptional value for money. They are ready

to move into without the stress and inconvenience of redecorating or renovating that’s often associated with an older property.” The Rosemount development on Robson Street, Anfield, features 88 energy efficient homes. For more information, call 0151 480 2896, or visit

Lets go crazy Belvoir believes the demand for rental properties is on the increase. The Lettings Rental Index shows that rental incomes have been rising since March this year. Figures show that over the last 18 months the UK has witnessed a 68 per cent increase in the number of residential properties available for let. This rise was initially matched by an upsurge in the number of people looking to 28 Your Move

rent, but the demand declined after peaking in June 2008. Now Mike Goddard, Belvoir’s chief executive, believes the market could be returning to “normality”, with the city centre and West Derby branch well placed to serve it. Mike commented: “The turnaround witnessed at the beginning of the second

quarter of 2009 is certainly significant. This upturn could be the first signs of normality returning to the rental property sector. With our years of experience, market insight and local knowledge, Belvoir is well placed to ensure that both landlords and tenants continue to enjoy the many benefits of property rental.”

The government pledge follows recommendations made in the Rugg review, a national review of the private rented sector. The review, which was launched after some insurance companies refused to cover unregulated agents, called for all agents to be registered through an independent national accreditation scheme. Sian Evans, property litigation partner at Weightmans Solicitors in Liverpool, believes compulsory regulation is needed in the residential property sector. Sian commented: “The government has sent a clear message that it will now be regulating lettings and managing agents. This is good news for landlords and tenants as it will get rid of rogue agents and protect landlords’ and tenants’ money. Now, any rogue lettings and managing agents still operating in a volatile market without the protection of bodies like the Association of Residential Letting Agents will be caught out once this regulation is imposed.” For expert legal advice, contact Weightmans Water Street office, on 0151 227 2601.

MSB’s HIPs package proves popular

City centre surge City Residential sales have hit new heights. The Victoria Street agents witnessed a surge of sales activity coming into the spring, with significant increases at the back end of April, throughout May and the first weeks of June. City Residential general manager Phil Hartley believes the city centre has once again captured the imagination of buyers. Phil commented: “Vendors are becoming more realistic with their prices and are prepared to take offers, but the offers are

also becoming a lot better. People had become scared to purchase while the market was so uncertain but prices have come down. Prices in the city centre had been affected more than suburbia, but now you can secure a two bedroom apartment at a great price and still have all the advantages of living in the city.” To see the range of city centre properties on offer at City Residential, visit

Developer joins government incentive Redrow is now offering HomeBuy Direct to home buyers in Liverpool.

For those eligible for the scheme, three and four bedroom properties at Redrow’s Cressington Heath development in Garston are available from £122,496. The HomeBuy Direct programme provides a five year interest-free equity loan of up to 30 per cent of the properties price, which is jointly funded by the Government and Redrow.

The programme is available to those who meet the criteria, with an income of less than £60,000 a year. Lesley Myers, area sales manager for Redrow Homes, commented: “It’s not just first time buyers who can benefit from a government-backed home buying scheme. Families in need of extra space could also

make a life changing step up to a bigger and better home for a fraction of the normal cost. This is an excellent opportunity for families to get the larger, brand new home they aspire to at a price they can afford.” For further details on Redrow’s Cressington Heath development, call 0845 676 0510, or visit

The Liverpool firm’s HIPs for £149, including VAT, package has taken the market by storm. Paul Bibby, managing partner and head of property at MSB Solicitors, commented: “We have blown a hole in the market. Customers are actually coming to us before selecting an agent.” HIPs became a legal requirement in 2007, meaning homeowners couldn’t sell their home without one. MSB Solicitors purchase the local search, water search and energy performance certificate from a search provider and compile the remaining elements of the HIP at no cost to their clients, requesting only that they carry out the conveyancing. The deal has been commended by the president of The Law Society, Paul Marsh. Locally, the scheme has proved popular with buyers. Moira Leong recently sold her flat in West Derby. She commented: “I shopped around for my HIP and found some as high as £300 to £400 before spotting that MSB Solicitors were doing them for £149. My HIP was ready in less than 10 days and the whole service was excellent.” For more information on MSB Solicitors call 0151 281 9040. Your Move 29

They met up with children from St Mary’s College, Crosby, Plaza manager Chris Halliday and Dave Turner from Rimrose Carpets for the launch of the fundraising initiative. Robin Baines from New Start, who brought along a

Superlambanana, and fundraiser Rowland Birch were also in attendance. Mike commented: “Multi screen cinemas are good but there is nothing like the atmosphere of your local community cinema. They should not be left to die out.” Refurbishment fundraisers are to take part in the Sefton Triathlon on Saturday 27 June, to raise money for the cinema and other charities. For further information on the triathlon, contact organiser John Moran at St Mary’s Sports Centre, on 0151 924 3700.

Style with substance Apartments at Miller Homes’ Bridgewater Park development are proving popular.

Two bedroom properties at the Netherley complex can be snapped up for £55,965, under the HomeBuy Direct scheme. For those that qualify, homebuyers can purchase 100 per cent of the property by paying 70 per cent of the cost. Miller Homes and the Government jointly fund a 30 per cent equity loan, which only becomes repayable after 25 years or when the customer sells their home. The development’s ‘Greenwich’ and

‘Bridgewater’ apartments feature Ideal Standard sanitary ware, tiling by Porcelanosa and integrated kitchen units. New resident Gemma Singleton commented: “I was attracted to the style of the apartment and the layout it had, which was very different from other apartments I had viewed. This apartment meets all my needs.” To arrange a viewing, call Miller Homes on 0800 840 8522, or email

The area sales manager Elaine Mounsey, Redrow Homes North West. Elaine Mounsey, relishes her position, motivating the sales team and managing every aspect of developments in the north-west. This includes Woodlands Grange, a development of two bedroom apartments and two, three and four bedroom homes on the Wirral. How did you get into property? I had always been curious about property. A friend suggested I apply for a part time sales consultant job with McBride Homes and I worked there for three years. Eventually the McBride sites moved too far away for me to commute on a daily basis (as I had two small children at the time) and I knew Redrow had a good reputation and were based in this area. I got the job of part time sales position and loved every minute of it! How has your career progressed? I worked on the sales side for Redrow in Winsford, then Chester, gaining promotion to senior sales consultant, then sales field manager and then area sales manager for Redrow North and then north-west. Essentially I have worked my way up over the space of 20 years with Redrow and really enjoy working with the team! What does high summer mean to you? Ideally it means sitting in the garden, in the sunshine, surrounded by the family with the barbeque going and a crisp, chilled glass of Chardonnay.

Have your say

“I agree that Penny Lane should be more of a focus for tourists, but surely it already has its own unique brand? Visitors to our city certainly think so; my Allerton Road offices overlook the end of Penny Lane, and I often see tourists having their picture taken with the famous street sign. If what Alan Binks is being proposed is a campaign to promote more visitors then I’m all for that director of HomeLets – as long as the street retains its charm and and HomeSales doesn’t turn into a tacky free-for-all of nasty souvenirs.”

“It’s a good idea as more definitely needs to be done to promote the area. Tourists often do come in here to get their pictures taken in the shop and see how it used to look when The Beatles got their hair cut here, but often the customers don’t know that that’s what we’re known for in the song.”

Does Penny Lane need rebranding? Councillors are calling for a ‘Fab Four Zone’ to be established in Penny Lane and its surrounds in south Liverpool, but is a ‘Beatles Quarter’ really a brand we need?

Have your say at

Adele Allan director, Tony Slavin on Smithdown Place

“Penny Lane deserves to be branded as a Beatles zone. Anything that can improve the area will make it much better for visitors from the US and Japan who, at the moment, find themselves coming to an area which isn’t explained and must wonder what all the fuss is about. There Ray Johnson have been complaints in the past about tours director, Magical there being too many wine bars on Mystery Tours Allerton Road but personally I think the development of that stretch has opened the whole area up.”

“Something definitely needs to be done as no one who visits really seems to be able to find much out about the area. There isn’t a lot of information in the way of signs, so unless you were a fan you wouldn’t know a lot about Penny Lane from just visiting. Anything which shows tourists what it’s all about would be sure to boost trade for all of us here and make the most of what is a really strong brand.”

“I think we should go for it so that we don’t lose out to other areas of the city, as people - even those from Liverpool – often don’t know where Penny Lane is and they don’t know much about it. I certainly don’t think we’ve made enough of it over the past forty years and the Sgt. Pepper’s Bistro could be great when it’s sorted out. Ultimately, it could help business in the area so I’m personally all for it.”

Movers What appealed to you about the apartment? I think it’s the quality and the size of the apartment that were its biggest selling points. It’s really well set out and there’s a huge balcony terrace which set it apart from the others we looked at. It also has great views of the river. What’s the layout? It’s pretty much open plan, with a large, well fitted-out living area, a kitchen and dining area and of course, the terrace. There are two bedrooms, one of which is ensuite, and a master bathroom. There are wooden floors throughout, apart from the neutral carpeting in the bedroom and tiles in the bathrooms. The apartment was furnished when we moved in so we’ve hardly had to do anything to it. What’s in the kitchen? The kitchen has white high gloss cabinets, a black granite work top surface and stainless steel appliances built in. We also have a wenge wood dining table with chrome and half a dozen black leather chairs around it. What’s your favourite item in the apartment? That would have to be the 50 inch plasma screen TV we bought from Martin Dawes. That will always come in handy!

Josh Beckett recently moved from his family home near Blackburn to a stunning two bedroom penthouse at The Reach development in Liverpool city centre. From September, Josh will attend the University of Liverpool for a degree in Psychology, and will share the apartment with a friend.

Take us into the living area... We recently went to Zen on Bold Street and bought two large canvas prints of Paul Weller and Kurt Cobain so they take pride of place on the walls. There’s a glass coffee table and a low glass side unit and I brought in two black leather sofas I got from my uncle. We’ve got a black rug from Paul Schofield Rugs in Chorley and some bright turquoise cushions to tie it all together.

Tell us about the terrace... We’ve got a couple of cream fabric sun loungers from home and a glass and aluminium dining table from B&Q. We’re also going to put up some large bamboo canes to screen it from next door and then I think we’ll be all set. Once uni’ starts I think there’ll be one or two parties out there but obviously we’ll have to consider the neighbours.

What’s the theme in the bedrooms? My friend’s has a black and red Japanese style. Mine is more natural with browns and white and there’s also an en-suite, with a large shower, toilet and terracotta tiles and walls. And the master bathroom? That’s done in the same style, except it has a bath, with an over the bath shower, sink and toilet.

What would be your dream buy? We’ve pretty much got everything we could need here but I’d really like a Bang & Olufsen audio system on the wall.

Leading independent sales and lettings agent Andrew Louis celebrated its 20th year in business on Thursday 18 June at its recently refurbished café style offices on Stanley Street. Liverpool’s business community enjoyed Andrew Louis branded green cocktails and music from 1989 - the year that Andrew Louis was set up. Staff from Sapporo Teppanyaki on Duke Street were in attendance with freshly prepared sushi and sashimi as guests enjoyed a sneak preview of the cool bar style reception, stone flooring and contemporary seating area.

Neil Caple Interview //// TALENT IN THE CITY

PINK Liverpool actor Neil Caple enjoyed a successful stint as Marty Murray in Brookside. Following an appearance in the popular Flint Street Nativity at the Liverpool Playhouse, Neil will star in Roger McGough’s adaptation of Molière’s “The Hypochondriac”. He took time out from rehearsals to chat to Your Move about why laughter is the best medicine. 42 Your Move

“I think the problem with a soap is that you can’t possibly keep up that standard all the time. It’s impossible.”

Page 43 Interview by Jon Kearney

Tell us a little bit about the production and the character you’ll be playing... It centres on the quack doctors that used to exist around 1673. They were students of Greek and Latin and basically made things up as they went along. They bamboozled people and charged exorbitant fees for their advice. I play Dr Diaforius, who wants to marry off his son, who is also a doctor and a complete nerd. The wealthy hypochondriac believes he can save an awful lot of money and save his health by marrying off his daughter to the young doctor. Do you ever show hypochondriac tendencies or are you pretty easy going? I’m pretty easy going but I do go to the doctor. I don’t ignore aches and pains because I’ve got a responsibility to my children to keep going! Do you find the theatre to be more of a fulfilling experience than TV and film? Absolutely. The major benefit of TV is that you get very well paid and perhaps once you’ve done it it’s in the can and you can look at it again. In the theatre you have a four week rehearsal process. In two weeks you’ll make headway and make important decisions about the character. By about the third week you’ll really have to start putting the books down and falter through rehearsals. It’s a pure memory test by that time. With TV and film it’s nowhere near as good an artistic experience.

You directed an open air community Shakespeare production on the Wirral last year. Would you like to see more ordinary people involved with theatre and the arts? The strange thing is I had never worked on community theatre before and it was the most enjoyable and rewarding artistic experience in my 30 years in the business. There were only two professionals from a cast of 35 and there was such commitment and talent on display. The standard was nothing short of extraordinary. If we can raise the funds we hope to do it again this year and then put on two productions a year from then on. What has been the proudest moment in your career to date? On TV I appeared in Bullion Boys, a production by Liverpool writer Jim

Hitchmough. I got to work alongside David Jason, which was both enjoyable and an education. The most prestigious theatre productions I have been involved with were for the Royal Shakespeare and National Theatre companies. My favourite role was that of Iago in Othello, which we took to the Globe Theatre in Tokyo. How does Brookside rank alongside those achievements? There were certain story lines and moments that I was as proud of as anything I’ve ever done. I think the problem with a soap is that you can’t possibly keep up that standard all the time. It’s impossible. I had been away from Liverpool for 20 years when Brookside came calling and I was commuting from Southampton about three times a week. I had three young children and they needed their Dad. I became too stressed to do the job and I couldn’t remember a line. I told my wife I was going to have to jack it in and then she came up with the idea of moving to Formby. Is there a stand-out talent you’ve worked with? The cast I worked with during my third year at the Central School of Speech and Drama was probably the strongest cast I’ve worked with. We had such fabulous talents at that time. You tend to admire the actors who can do things you can’t and technically I’m not as strong as others. I’m always in awe of figures like Sir Derek Jacobi and Peter O’ Toole. O’Toole’s a real life force, he has a combination of it all. What do you like to do when you’re out in Formby and Liverpool? Formby has a lot of Gastro pubs and a great Balti house

which we go to. I also live close to the Freshfield Hotel. In Liverpool I like the Newz Bar, the Living Room and the bars at the Albert Dock, and I’ve had some fantastic meals in The Carraigeworks and 60 Hope Street. The kids have a big say in where we go and they love La Tasca. And finally, what’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given? I’m too stubborn to listen to advice! Probably the best piece of advice is to enjoy now, don’t keep waiting for things to get better.

Ask The Expert

Courting colour

With over 10 years experience in the interior design business, Sharon Armor is poised to answer all your design queries from DIY disasters to decorating dilemmas.

We have never really used our small courtyard at the back of the house, as years ago we built an extension for a downstairs cloakroom which took up most of the area. We have now knocked this extension down and have reclaimed lots more light into the property and some much needed outdoor space. We want to make the most of it, but at the moment it’s enclosed by brick walls! My wife has suggested painting the walls but we have no idea of what type of colour would be best, could you help? I would suggest that you use a really intense colour. Strong colour really works well in small outdoor spaces as it creates a dramatic backdrop for planting. Dulux has a paint which can be mixed to order for masonry, It’s called Venetian Blue 2. A great way to join the courtyard to the rest of your home would be to use this colour or a slightly lighter shade internally as it would create the perfect link.

Electric feel We have recently had some refurbishment work done to our property, the main building work is complete, and we are now in a position to choose a new kitchen. We want to purchase all new appliances and do not know how best to do this. A friend has suggested that we purchase the appliances on the internet, instead of ordering them through the kitchen supplier; but what would you suggest? I would definitely do some research of your own and look at all the guarantees, terms and conditions and AN ELECTROLUX MODEL WITH A FIVE installation costs for the products, before you make YEAR WARRANTY, AVAILABLE AT CAPRICORN KITCHENS any decisions. An offer that looks like a really good deal on the internet may cost you more in the long run! Many companies on the internet offer only a twelve month guarantee for electrical goods and kitchen items. However, if you buy your kitchen from a manufacturer such as Capricorn Kitchens, not only will they advise you on the complete design and installation, but they will offer you guarantees on all electrical appliances lasting between two and five years.

Stylish silhouettes I have just converted the loft into a dressing room and the storage it has created is fantastic! I am now looking for a wallpaper to use. Ideally I would like something quirky, can you help? Quick links Dulux Capricorn Kitchens Fern Living

I think the Danish company Fern Living has the perfect solution for you. The company has launched a new collection Fashion Wallpaper. The wallpaper is monochrome and features silhouettes of models holding different poses which would look incredible in a dressing room.

Rich pickings

The end of June is the time to start reaping the rewards of your hard work in the garden. Fruit shrubs will start to shed their tasty treats, allowing for a healthy growth later in the season. They won’t all drop off themselves, so thin gooseberry, rhubarb, strawberry and redcurrant plants and share the spoils with your neighbours and friends.

Build a BBQ

Indulge in delicious outdoor dining on balmy summer nights with a traditional brick barbeque. On a flat, level surface, lay out the first round of bricks around the grill tray to determine the internal width of the brickwork. Lay the bricks on a layer of mortar, ensuring the corners are at right angles. Build up the walls to around seven courses and turn two bricks side-on on each side to create a ledge for the charcoal tray. Repeat the pattern another three courses up to support the grill tray. After installing the final course, draw a length of hosepipe along each join for a neat finish.

Before selling your home, be aware that buyers will be looking at the property’s energy efficiency rating before putting down a deposit. The Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) grades homes from A to G, with A being the best, and recommends a course of action to save on energy usage. Tom O’Clee, of Energy Reporter on Allerton Road in Liverpool, said vendors needn’t be alarmed by the rating structure: “The average house is said to be rated an ‘E’, with 46 points, but the biggest improvements can be made with the simplest changes. Installing cavity wall insulation and loft insulation are the most cost effective ways - under £500 - to boost a property’s point score.” Depending on its size and whether it is terraced or detached (terraced houses lose the least heat) you could see bill predictions drop dramatically on the EPC by making just a few changes. Tom added: “New boilers are much more efficient today than they were ten years ago and, coupled with insulation, can make a huge difference.” See or call 0800 512 012 to ask about government grants available for energy efficient improvements and the qualifying criteria. The database chronicles around 1,700 films made in and about Liverpool over the past 100 years or so. The resource, makes up part of “City in Film”, a two year project exploring the relationship between Liverpool’s architecture and the moving image. The oldest film featured was taken in 1897 by French film makers, the Lumiére Brothers, who photographed moving picture scenes in Liverpool. Later footage, developed by local film and video makers, includes street scenes, housing conditions and theatre and arts schemes from the 1970s. The ‘City in Film’ catalogue can be viewed at alogue. HoSt on Hope Street is the most recent addition to the Manning brothers’ scattering of restaurants in the city’s popular Georgian Quarter. Serving contemporary Asian cuisine in a relaxed, light and airy setting, the new venue perfectly complements the nearby 60 Hope Street’s bistro and classic à la carte offering opposite – marked by a Superlambanana wearing the Union Jack - and The Quarter on Falkner Street. Bradley Beazley, director of Bradley Beazley Residential on Rodney Street, joins me for lunch after a series of morning appointments. Relaxing over a drink and browsing the extensive menu, which offers Thai, Japanese and Indonesian dishes among its wares, it’s the first lunch beak he’s allowed himself to take in a while. “Good customer service is what sets us apart as a business,” says Bradley. “My plan has always been to expand slowly and surely across the whole of Liverpool and Merseyside, and to keep my reputation - and that means being there to look after tenants and landlords’ needs whatever they may be. That can mean I work some long hours, but I love my work and I’m

passionate about doing it well.” HoSt offers a selection of sharing dishes to start, as well as dishes like steamed mussels with chilli jam and Thai basil on the specials menu, which changes daily to cater for the business, family and theatre crowds who frequent it. For Bradley Beazley, honesty is the USP: “If there’s a problem with the property that’s going to make it difficult to let, then I’ll be honest with the landlord – I won’t just take it on and let it sit empty. Providing professional and honest advice has built our firm a good reputation.” Since opening in London in 1995, Bradley Beazley Residential has expanded its portfolio to serve over 3,000 landlords and, since opening its Liverpool office six months ago, Bradley has found himself working on behalf of 150 clients in the area, offering a maintenance repairs and refurbishment and fit-out service when required. He told Your Move that the trick is to keep colour schemes and décor simple and classic - no Changing Rooms frills need apply: “I advise my landlords not to decorate to their own

taste, and to go for white walls and bathroom suites. Prospective tenants can be really put off by an individual style, making it difficult to let. Landlords need to see the property as it is; an investment and not their own home.” For our main courses, Bradley chooses wok-fried three pepper beef while I choose the katsu chicken dish, which offers a generous portion of chicken in breadcrumbs with curry sauce. Both dishes are beautifully presented and served with jasmine rice, while today’s HoSt special of red coconut curry with chicken, sweet potato and mangetout is also set to tempt the tastebuds at a very reasonable price including a bottle of Asahi, glass of wine or soft drink all for £7.95. The selection of coffees and Asian teas at HoSt is extensive, and over a traditional Japanese green tea, Bradley and I enjoy a discussion of his own early years in South Africa, the time he spent in London, and how he’s adapted to life in Liverpool: “People are so much more relaxed here; it’s very refreshing. I was working up here just as the Capital of

Culture bid put us on the map and to see the development at Liverpool One become such a success has been incredible. It’s certainly a city with the wow factor – just look at the street we’re on now.” As panAsian takes the Georgian Quarter by storm and the contemporary fuses with the traditional, he might just be right.

“Good customer service is what sets us apart as a business...”

“A heady mix of colours, sounds and aromas greeted all who attended the Africa Oyé” A heady mix of colours, sounds and aromas greeted all who attended the Africa Oyé festival in Sefton Park. The crowds were treated to the infectious beats and melodies of African music during the largest free African music festival in the UK and also enjoyed food, drink and dance from all over the world. The two day event also featured arts & crafts, fashion and massages in the Oyé village, with plenty to keep all age groups entertained.
