From Interim President

LETTER

Fr. Gregoire J. Fluet Dear Mount Saint Mary College Supporters, Alumni, and Friends

W

With costs continuing to rise all around us, it’s more challenging than ever to avoid turning away qualified students for financial reasons. But we’re able to continue offering these students a lifeline thanks to dedicated donors like you. Even that small scholarship might make the difference between getting more hours on a second job and having time to study properly.

hen I first came to Mount Saint Mary College as chaplain and director of Campus Ministry nearly seven years ago, I could never have imagined that I would be serving as Interim President – but here we are! This role is challenging as one might expect, but certainly very rewarding. From the bottom of my heart, I want to thank everyone, from students and staff to faculty and alumni, for their outpouring of love and support as I serve the college in this new role of leadership. It truly is a pleasure to present to you the 2022-23 Donor Impact Report. As you know, scholarships funded by the generous donations of alumni and friends help to bring a college education to dozens of deserving students. For many, these scholarships make the difference between attending college or putting that dream on hold. Even what might seem like a small sum of money can make a huge difference in the lives of a student, allowing them to purchase books they

might not be able to afford. Seeing the success of these students has always been one of my greatest joys at the Mount. As you will see, this Donor Impact Report reflects the legacy of the Dominican Sisters, which is still very much alive and well at the Mount. Like our founding sisters, it’s clear that our supporters have made the four Dominican pillars of study, spirituality, service, and community a staple of their everyday lives.

I can’t thank you enough for everything you do to help make the Mount such an incredible place! Of course, the publication you hold in your hands right now didn’t appear out of nowhere. I’d like to take a moment to thank the Advancement Committee of the Board of Trustees, and my talented colleagues in the Advancement office and Marketing office, who worked hard to bring you this report. Go Knights!

Advancement Committee

A standing committee of the college’s Board of Trustees, members promote a culture of philanthropy throughout the college community, the Hudson Valley, and beyond; serve as advocates of the college; ensure new individuals with interest and capacity are engaged with the college in meaningful ways; and make financial donations to the college.

I graduated from MSMC in 1967 and have continued friendships with classmates from more than 60 years ago. After spending a number of years in education as a teacher, principal, guidance counselor, and social worker, I served on the Board of Trustees at MSMC and am currently on the college’s Advancement Committee. I entered the Dominican Sisters of the Most Holy Rosary in Newburgh in September 1962 and am currently a member of the Leadership Team of the Dominican Sisters of Hope, the Wartburg Home Board, and the Board of Investor Advocates for Social Justice.

As an alum, I am very proud of my 45-year connection to the Mount. Having graduated in 1982 with a BS in Business Management and Administration, I was well prepared for my career. As a local business owner, we proudly serve our clients in the Mount’s Judeo Christian tradition, with integrity and honesty. The continued success of Mount Saint Mary College, in its mission and the values instilled in its students, is very important to me. I proudly served as a member of the Board of Trustees, and am happy to be of continued service to the college as a member of the Advancement Committee.

2 DONOR IMPACT REPORT

The Mount is my alma mater. Over the years I have served on the Board of Trustees and have attended many of the academic and social functions at the college. I have a strong sense of commitment to this institution and its mission, particularly to the service component. Giving freely of my time on the Advancement Committee gives me the opportunity to continue supporting the mission. It is a gift to be of service and share one’s time, talent and treasure.

— Sr. Joann Boneski '65

My family, firm, and I have been given the opportunities to share our talents and experience with Mount Saint Mary College for over 26 years. It is an honor and privilege to assist the Advancement Committee. In doing so, I hope to engage the many relationships and firms the Daubman family has enjoyed by sharing the mission of service and the important needed role that MSMC provides for the entire Hudson Valley Community.

— Paul Daubman Sr.

My wife, Elizabeth, and daughters, Caterina, Mira, and Elle fell in love with Orange County and are proud homeowners in the City of Newburgh. I am passionate about youth development and am a committed community volunteer. Mount Saint Mary College is a critical anchor institution here in the City of Newburgh. As a resident and active stakeholder, I want to help the Mount and our students flourish and continue to be vibrant contributors to our community. I am proud to be a member of the Mount community and happy to have an opportunity to serve the college and continue its mission.

Prior to my son applying to the Mount, I must admit that I knew very little about the college. He had several opportunities to play baseball and attend other schools, but after visiting for the weekend in the fall of 2013, he was convinced the Mount was the place he wanted to spend the next four years. Having witnessed his growth as an individual, a student, and an athlete, it became apparent that the Mount was a special place, which has led me to be a donor and now a member of the Advancement Committee to help further the college’s mission.

— Bill Fioravanti

— Peter Hayes P'18

Newburgh is home for both my family and my firm. This is such a wonderful vibrant community. To have such an outstanding college in one’s home community is a rarity. Mount Saint Mary College is the heart and soul of this community. As an employer, it is a huge advantage to have amazing students, both undergraduate and graduate, coming to our firm from such an austere institution.

— Philip J. DeAngelo, Chair

I graduated from Mount Saint Mary College in 2019 with a BS in Business Management and concentration in Finance. During my time at the Mount, I played on the Baseball Team for four years and served the Hudson Valley at an internship with Wallkill Valley Federal Savings & Loan before joining UBS Financial Services (NYC) in 2019. Currently, I am the editor and writer for the Huvane Wealth Management Conversations and Next Gen Investor segment, and a coordinator for the Huvane’s 198th scholarship fund, providing financial aid and mentorship to first generation high school students in the Bronx.

— Thomas Huvane Jr. ‘19

I chose to attend the Mount without ever stepping on the grounds. It just felt right and this choice has truly been a blessing in my life. So much so, that when I was choosing where to attend for my Master's, I returned there. Mount Saint Mary College gave me a strong sense of service, mission, commitment, and the desire to give back in any way possible. As a double alumna, a Dominican Sister, and now a member of the Board of Trustees, I continue to be blessed. I hope that my commitment to those who love the Mount, whether alumni or friend of MSMC, be a blessing for others in whatever way they need.

— Sr. Connie Kelly, OP '84 '95

My experience of Mount Saint Mary College through the years has been like unwrapping a GIFT – one that keeps on giving! I graduated from the Mount in 1971. Those four years gave me an excellent education, career skills, lasting friendships with classmates, faculty, and staff, and deep gratitude for the beliefs and values that I cherish and share. Now, as an alumna, a Dominican Sister, and member of the Board of Trustees, I am delighted to offer my time, talents, and treasure so that others will have the opportunity to discover and unwrap such a GIFT!

— Sr. Connie Koch '71

I am a Malcom Baldridge Executive Fellow and a passionate champion for safety, quality and patient and staff experience. A Connecticut native, I've been married for 37 years and have two grown sons.

– Joanne O. Miller, DNP, RN, NEA-BC '83

For 30 years, I have provided service to those affected by mental illness and addiction and the individuals and systems that treat those individuals. After graduating from Mount Saint Mary College in 1988, I went on to Adelphi University where I obtained my Masters of Social Work. My wife, Elaine, Vice President of Students for MSMC is also an alum, as are our children, Ryan and Kayla. Currently, I serve as the CRO of Mental Health America of Dutchess County, and strongly believe that we need to embrace change. My leadership has led to successful transitions of service, and I have been recognized locally and statewide for my compassion and leadership. In addition, I have appeared on television and radio, speaking about mental health topics in an effort to eradicate stigma.

4 DONOR IMPACT REPORT

From birth to the age of five, I lived in my grandmother’s house, directly across the street from the Mount campus. After earning my Bachelor’s degree, I continued my education in Business at MSMC, where I felt right at home. My commitment is to community service, a passion I credit to the Mount, particularly through the example of the Dominican Sisters. Working closely with local civic, business, and not-for-profit leaders, my team at Get Right Results and I identify issues of priority for Newburgh. In addition, I served as a keynote speaker for the college’s first Start-Up Weekend, and received the Mount Saint Mary College Distinguished Alumni Award in 2022.

The years I spent at Mount Saint Mary College were among the best in my life. From the moment I arrived, I knew it was (and remains) a special place. Friends, faculty, and administration had a major influence in shaping the man I am today. My days there were fun, challenging, and eye opening and gave me perspective that I didn’t have before. Above all else, I met Mary Hill (class of 1990) there...we’ve been married for 25 years. It is for those reasons and more that I try to stay as involved with MSMC as possible 30 years after my graduation. I feel a debt of gratitude and it’s my pleasure to try and repay it in some small way.

I completed my four-year degree from Mount Saint Mary College majoring in Communications with a minor in Theater and English. I started my career at the former Saint Francis Hospital in Poughkeepsie, N.Y, planning and executing major hospital fundraisers and ceremonies and building relationships throughout the community, before becoming the Executive Director of The Chamber Foundation, Inc. of the Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce in 2012. Do well by doing good Planned gifts

B

en Franklin first coined the phrase “Do well by doing good” in Poor Richard’s Almanac. What he meant by that was, when we give of ourselves to others, we often receive the benefits of our generosity in other ways. Franklin was known as a generous philanthropist throughout the colonies and often wrote about philanthropy to encourage others to be generous in their communities. Making a planned gift is a great example of doing well by doing good. You don’t have to be rich to take advantage of these giving opportunities. Even donors of modest means can make an impact on the college they love, and its students, by using these giving tools.

Named and Endowed Scholarships One of the best ways to make an impact on the students at Mount Saint Mary College is to create a named or endowed scholarship. Scholarships help students gain access to an affordable MSMC education and keep the college competitive with our peers as we build our student body. When you help cover the cost of tuition, books and other expenses, you are really enabling a student to focus on what really matters – their education. A named scholarship is an incredible way to honor a loved one; recognize a beloved faculty member; or memorialize the life of someone who has passed. MSMC has two ways to create new named scholarships: through the commitment of an annual scholarship gift of at least $5,000, or you can endow a scholarship with a minimum of $25,000. Annual named scholarship gifts are

6 DONOR IMPACT REPORT

awarded within the year the gift is received and provide students with immediate financial assistance during that school year. These scholarships can be funded in many ways, including a donation of a cash gift, a gift of appreciated assets such as stocks, or making a gift through your will or living trust. Endowed scholarship gifts support students in perpetuity. The college awards 5 percent of the principle, while re-investing any additional interest to help the principle grow in value. For instance: If a donor establishes a new named endowed scholarship with a minimum of $25,000, the college will award $1,250 in the first year. Since the college’s endowment usually earns more than 5 percent interest, that extra interest earned is then added back to the principle. Compound interest quickly grows the principle, allowing the college to award more money from your endowed scholarship each year. Imagine where your scholarship will stand in 10 or more years.

Making a Will/Estate Planning Many people believe that they lack sufficient wealth to include a charitable gift in their will. They assume that the joy of philanthropy and the tax advantages of a planned gift are privileges of the wealthy, not people like themselves. In fact, people of all ages and backgrounds are making a difference in the lives of Mount students by including the college in their will. Everyone from 18–80 needs to have an up-to-date will or a Revocable Living Trust; it is easy and necessary if you want to ensure your wishes are followed. Most of us don’t think in terms of having an estate but we all have one. Having an estate plan allows you to ensure that your possessions and accumulated wealth are transferred to your heirs while minimizing certain taxes, costs and lost time. By preparing a will and naming Mount Saint Mary College as a beneficiary you may avoid certain taxes

and probate costs while at the same time potentially transferring greater wealth to your heirs AND providing a meaningful gift to Mount Saint Mary College. Writing your will importantly offers you the unique opportunity to create a legacy for yourself by including gifts to Mount Saint Mary College. These types of gifts create long-term stability for the college and ensure that its mission carries on well into the future. Donors who make these types of gifts also become members of the Living Legacy Society. You only need three pieces of information to include Mount Saint Mary College in your will: our name, address and our tax id number – that's it! Mount Saint Mary College, 330 Powell Avenue, Newburgh, NY 12550, Tax-ID: 14-1468399. For additional assets not covered in your will, including (but not limited to): 401ks, IRAs, life insurance policies, and bank accounts, you may want to designate Mount Saint Mary College as a beneficiary. Naming

Living Legacy Society the Mount as a beneficiary may help your heirs avoid or reduce income or estaterelated taxes while the full value of the plan benefits MSMC. This kind of gift might be particularly interesting to you if you have a life insurance policy you no longer need and wish to create a legacy at the Mount. If you would like to name Mount Saint Mary College as your beneficiary, it is as simple as contacting your account administrator and filling out any necessary forms.

at the Mount, your IRA Charitable Rollover Gift (also known as a Qualified Charitable Distribution or QCD) benefits you as well.

Please don’t forget to tell us that you have included us in your will or estate plans. We want to thank you, celebrate your gift and understand your wishes for how your gift is to be used to support Mount Saint Mary students.

Note: It is necessary for the funds to pass directly from your IRA to Mount Saint Mary College. If you withdraw your money first before giving it to MSMC, it will count as income and you will be taxed on the amount of your withdrawal. Please consult the administrator of your IRA or a qualified financial expert for additional details and to discuss your unique financial situation.

Giving through your Individual Retirement Account (IRA) Donations made from your IRA are some of the most powerful and tax-smart gifts you can make to Mount Saint Mary College. That is because your gift passes tax free preserving the intended gift, while also reducing your income by an equal amount, thereby reducing your income taxes and protecting your hard-earned savings. If you are 70 ½ or older, you can transfer up to $100,000 each year directly from your IRA to a qualified charitable institution such as Mount Saint Mary College. Along with making an immediate impact on students

If you are at least 73 years old and have not met your required minimum distribution for the year, your IRA Charitable Rollover Gift can satisfy all or part of that requirement. Since this transfer is made directly from your IRA to Mount Saint Mary College it may reduce your taxes because it does not count as income for you.

Giving through a Donor Advised Fund (DAF) Donor advised funds (DAF) are growing in popularity for making gifts to MSMC. A donor advised fund is a “giving account” that offers flexibility and ease of use for donors. While not all nonprofit entities are eligible to accept gifts from DAFs – Mount Saint Mary College is and we welcome their use by our donors who wish to set up named or endowed scholarships or otherwise support the college.

Income-Producing Charitable Gifts Income-producing gifts provide income for you or persons you designate. Income can be paid to you for the life of up to two beneficiaries or for a set period of years. Ultimately, the gifted assets become available for use by the college for a predesignated purpose. Examples of the type of gifts are Charitable Gift Annuities, Charitable Remainder Trusts, and Charitable Lead Trusts. While the specifics of each type of trust are different, several advantages apply to all three. • Create life income for yourself and/or someone else age 50 or older • Claim a partial charitable income and estate tax gift deduction for the value of the remainder interest in the trust • Convert low-yield securities or other property to a form of investment that has a better yield • Receive professional investment management of the assets • Reduce or avoid capital gains taxes for gifts of long-term appreciated property All trusts and annuities are professionally administered by the National Catholic Community Foundation. We are here to help work through the specifics of your donation. Helping us to understand exactly what to do with your generous legacy gift is an important step in the process. We want to thank you, celebrate your gift, and inspire others to join you in supporting students at the Mount.

M

ount Saint Mary College recognizes with profound gratitude the members of the Living Legacy Society, who have included the college in their estate plans. Their enlightened philanthropy will ensure the provision of academic excellence in the Dominican tradition for future generations of Mount students.

The Dominican Pillars A blueprint for service and success

“[James McEnery] was a genuinely dedicated teacher with a love for the Mount.” — Dr. James F. Cotter From an interview before his passing

Few could have predicted the lasting impact the Dominican Sisters would have when they arrived in Newburgh 140 years ago... But in the present day, it’s easy to see how much we owe to their hard work and dedication. On April 9, 1883 Sisters Hildegarde, Justina, DeSales, and Egbert first set foot in Newburgh. They had arrived by way of a steamship called The Mary Powell. With the four pillars of Dominican Life – study, spirituality, service, and community – guiding them, the Dominican Sisters of Newburgh established Mount Saint Mary College as a four-year institution in October of 1959. And now, more than 60 years later, these four Dominican pillars are still at the core of a Mount education.

Study

F

ittingly for a man born on the Fourth of July, there’s much to celebrate about the life and legacy of James V. McEnery, Professor Emeritus of English. McEnery is a Mount Saint Mary College legend, embodying the Dominican Sister’s devotion to the pillar of study. A founding faculty member of the college, he was the only lay person and the only male instructor during the college’s first academic year in 1960. Later in his career, McEnery was given the Trustees Award “for his love for the Mount and his humanitarian approach to life.” From the Mount’s first commencement in 1964 all the way through 2022,

8 DONOR IMPACT REPORT

only two people had led the college’s Commencement processions: McEnery and James Finn Cotter, another longtime Mount English professor. Cotter – a Mount legend in his own right – passed away in 2021 after decades of service to the college. During an interview before his passing, Cotter recalled the countless contributions that McEnery, his friend and colleague, made to help the college become the thriving academic institution it is today. “Jim loved his students and enjoyed meeting them after class,” Cotter noted. “He always had lunch with them, learned their names, and remembered them long after they had graduated. He was a genuinely dedicated teacher with a love for the Mount.”

McEnery even looked the part, dressing like the “quintessential college professor,” with his signature bow tie and tweed jacket, said Cotter. McEnery’s appearance reflected his dedication to his students. McEnery and his wife, Jane, had four children, three of whom became Mount graduates: Mary Anne ’70, Susan ’73, and Regina ’80. They also had a son named James. Mary Anne and Regina fondly remember their father. They had several classes with McEnery when they were students, but he never gave his daughters special treatment. Mary Anne and Regina both remember their father as “a tough grader,” but always fair. Regina said that for her dad, “being in

McEnery

Dominican Pillar Study the classroom, impacting students, [and] instilling knowledge was front and center.” Her sister agrees. “I would describe him as scholarly, humble, very tuned-in to his students, and always willing to make himself available to answer any kind of questions they might have had,” said Mary Anne. “He loved the English language and he loved good writing. And he also loved to see his students succeed.” The first step in helping his students succeed was making sure they had a place to live and learn. Mary Anne recalled how, in 1960, her father pulled up his sleeves and helped to put the finishing touches on the Villa Madonna, the college’s first residence hall and class space. McEnery was also a big supporter of the Mount’s Higher Education Opportunity Program (HEOP), said Mary Anne: “He put a lot of effort into trying to open doors for students from disadvantaged backgrounds. That was very important to him.” The professor’s devotion to the Mount lasted long after his retirement in 1987. It wasn’t unusual to see him at events like Alumni Reunion Weekend, Investiture, or Convocation, and of course, Commencement. McEnery was just as good a father as he was a professor. In 1976, his wife was nearing the end of her battle with cancer.

HELP HONOR MCENERY'S LEGACY The Professor James V. McEnery Memorial Endowed Scholarship was recently established in his honor by his loving family. This new scholarship, given to new or continuing students in the English or Education field, is still growing and could benefit greatly from your support. more recent years, his name has been added to the award’s title as well. Thanks to the work of faculty and staff like McEnery, the college’s academic programs have grown and thrived. In only the past few months, the Mount has introduced a plethora of exciting programs, including new majors in Philosophy and Theology and Religious Studies, and a Master of Science in Nursing Education program for students who want to teach in an academic or healthcare setting.

Regina, who was a freshman at the Mount that year, recalled sitting in the college’s cafeteria, lonely and feeling like her world was crumbling around her. “I just remember Dad coming in with his tray and sitting down next to me,” Regina said. “He didn’t say anything – he just sat down and gave me that smile of his. I never felt like I was alone at the Mount again.” McEnery passed away on Christmas Eve of 2015, but his legacy lives on at the Mount. Just this year in October, McEnery’s family established the Professor James V. McEnery

Memorial Endowed Scholarship. The award will be given to new or continuing students in the English or Education field who demonstrate financial need and good to excellent academic ability. The James V. McEnery Alumni Service Award, which is given to an alum who goes above and beyond to serve the college, is regularly awarded at Alumni reunion Weekend. And a year after the passing of his wife, McEnery established the Jane R. McEnery Award for Excellence in English, given annually to a graduating senior. In

As the programs evolve, so too does the academic structure. Complimenting the Schools of Business and Nursing, the college debuted The School of Arts, Sciences, and Education (SASE) in the Fall of 2023. Bringing together six divisions at the heart of a liberal arts education under one umbrella, SASE provides more efficient and equitable management and a more consistent structure across each academic area. These include the Divisions of Communication, Art, and Digital Media (CADM); Education; Humanities; Mathematics and Information Technology; Natural Sciences; and Social Sciences. McEnery, we think, would be pleased with the innovative ways we are keeping the Dominican pillar of study alive and thriving at Mount Saint Mary College. Mount Saint Mary College

“I’m very, very proud of the Care Closet,” said Fr. Fluet. “We are family, and so we take care of each other.” — Fr. Gregoire Fluet

Dominican Pillar Spirituality Spirituality

B

efore Fr. Gregoire J. Fluet answered the call to become Interim President in the Fall of 2023, he arrived at Mount Saint Mary College by way of Holy Apostles College and Seminary in Cromwell, Conn. From his first day on the job as the Mount’s new Chaplain, Fr. Fluet has said that Campus Ministry and the Dominican pillar of spirituality are for everyone, not just those of the Christian faith. It’s a core value that Fr. Fluet has stood by unwaveringly these last six years. He reminds students each week that Confession is not only available, but open to anyone in the college community who wishes to take part in the sacrament. And for those interested in the Christian faith, Fr. Fluet is there to guide them through the process, from Baptism and First Communion through Confirmation and renewing wedding vows. Then there’s the Care Closet, which proves the old axiom that “a little help can go a long way.” Spearheaded by Fr. Fluet and established while the world was still reeling from the fallout of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Care Closet provides personal items like food, toothpaste, toilet paper, and more to students. The motto is simple, Fr. Fluet explained: “Need one? Take one.” The venture is supplied through donations from the faculty, staff, and students, as well as through the generosity of friends of the college. A satellite of the Care Closet, the

Snacks ‘n’ Stacks Cupboard in the Kaplan Family Library and Learning Center, was established in 2022. Fr. Fluet also created the Mount’s Student Emergency Fund, which has been extremely useful to students during the COVID-19 pandemic and beyond. This fund provides financial support to students who find themselves in unforeseen crisis situations that could potentially derail their progress towards graduation. It’s not surprising that Fr. Fluet is devoted to the Mount community. The Dominican pillar of spirituality, he said, teaches us to love our fellow human beings. “[The pillar of spirituality] means balance, looking to our Lord for guidance, and love – the love that we are to have for one another,” he noted. “We are called to love one another, to welcome one another, and to be present to one another, as He has been present to us.” Sharing Fr. Fluet’s sentiment is Charles Zola, assistant to the president for Mission Integration, associate professor of Philosophy, and director of the college’s Catholic and Dominican Institute (CDI). Since Zola established it 15 years ago, CDI has been promoting the Mount’s heritage of St. Dominic, advancing the Dominican charism of study and service, providing a forum for discussion of contemporary ethical issues, and enhancing Catholic and Jewish dialogue. Zola also created the Dominican Scholars of Hope (DSH), a nonacademic community for highly motivated Mount students.

Zola

“For me, the Dominican pillar of spirituality highlights a fundamental truth about the human person,” Zola explained. “We are not merely physical or material beings, but a unity of soul and body. A mistaken view of this essential JudeoChristian perspective is what motivated Saint Dominic and his mission. Today, Dominican higher education invites students to explore and live this reality in a very intentional way.” As Zola notes, spirituality can take many forms. The Mount has no shortage of students, faculty, and staff living the spirituality pillar. For example, at the dedication ceremony for the college’s baseball and softball field scoreboard last year, the Mount honored the donors for their commitment, support, and leadership. This included the Huvane and Hayes families, whose sons, Tom Huvane Jr. ’19 and Ryan Hayes ’18, played for the Mount’s baseball team. Tom Huvane Sr. made a fitting connection between spirituality and athletics: “A Catholic education is more than just the education in the classroom; it’s also your body and your soul,” he said. “This is where we take care of the body – it’s in athletics. We learn about competition, we learn about teamwork, we learn how to lose with humility, we learn how to win with confidence, and these are all life lessons that we can learn right here on this field.”

Dominican Pillar Service Service

A

s a service-oriented college, the Dominican pillar of service has become an integral part of everything Mount Saint Mary College has to offer. The School of Nursing’s curriculum embodies this by providing students with opportunities that not only prepare them for their role in a service-focused profession, but assist people within the Mount and local community as well. Lynette DeBellis, associate professor of Nursing and Chair of the School of Nursing, says that the Mount’s Nursing program has made great strides in providing service opportunities for its students. “Service goes hand-in-hand with the profession of nursing, [just like] the Dominican pillars,” she explained. “We believe that students should engage with organizations within the Newburgh community to understand the populations they serve during clinical rotations.” For Mount Nursing students, these service opportunities include fundraising efforts, such as when students within Sigma Theta Tau, the International Nursing Honor Society, raised more than $1,000 for Doctors without Borders on behalf of Ukraine. Service in the community The Student Nurses’ Association (SNA), a club for all nursing students at the Mount, consistently runs events on and off campus, allowing students to receive realworld experience while assisting the local community. Along with medical professionals from the New York Blood Center (NYBC),

SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITIES AT THE MOUNT The college offers a variety of donor funded scholarships for nursing students, such as the Hudson Valley Hospice Annual Scholarship. Recently established by Hudson Valley Hospice, this scholarship supports Nursing students from Dutchess or Ulster County who have an interest in Hospice nursing. Other scholarships include the Bart Bilsky Family Scholarship for Nursing Excellence, the Moira Rovere Bayer ’81 Memorial Endowed Scholarship, the Elise Cuff McKenna, Sr. Memorial Scholarship for Nursing Excellence, and many more.

students within the SNA help plan the college’s blood drives each semester. Working with students, faculty, staff, and members of the local community, Nursing students spend their time assisting those donating blood over the course of the two-day event. Students within the SNA have also teamed up with the college’s Office of Health Services to keep students, faculty, and staff flu-free by administering flu shots through a series of on-campus clinics. Nursing students from the college have also participated in several flu clinics for the cadets at West Point in the past. With a focus on giving back to the local communities, the School of Nursing has hosted various community health education events throughout the years. One such event that the school regularly offers is their popular Fuzzy Friends clinics, where children learn the “bear necessities” of medical care. Led by Linda Kelly, associate professor of Nursing, the clinics feature students demonstrating how doctors and nurses use stethoscopes, bandages, blood pressure cuffs, and more to keep patients happy and healthy. The patients in this case are the children’s very own stuffed animals – ranging from traditional teddies to superheroes. “These clinics benefit both students and the children of the community,” explained DeBellis. “We are able to provide a warm and welcoming presence for children, highlight the role of the nurse, and provide opportunities for students to practice not only their clinical expertise, but also practice skills while engaging and communicating with younger clients and their families.”

Nursing Workforce Diversity With service ingrained in the School of Nursing’s curriculum, engagement opportunities were additionally extended with the addition of a $1.6 million, threeyear Nursing Workforce Diversity (NWD) Grant from the Health Resources & Services Administrations (HRSA), U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Currently in its second year, the NWD program focuses on the recruitment, support, retention, and graduation of nursing students from underrepresented groups. It increases nursing education opportunities and assists students from disadvantaged backgrounds to become baccalaureate-prepared nurses by providing academic and financial support. Throughout their first year, the NWD program took on a variety of service opportunities, including writing letters to encourage and empower women and girls through the Letter Project, as well as independent drives for the Grace Smith House women’s domestic violence services in Poughkeepsie, NY and the Mount’s Campus Ministry Care Closet. Most recently, students within the NWD program participated in the “Making Strides Against Breast Cancer” walk for the American Cancer Society, benefitting breast cancer research. Through this opportunity, the group raised more than $1,600 to be donated for the fight against breast cancer. “It is important to provide opportunities for students to understand the social determinants of health, and how these factors affect the community at large,” DeBellis said.

ozens of classrooms buzz with children proudly reading their own stories aloud to classmates and parents. Educators are imparting the joys of the written word to youths of all ages, and teachers in training from area colleges are working one-on-one with them to unlock their full academic potential. In the gym, children are practicing their free-throws and layups with student athlete volunteers from Mount Saint Mary College, and downstairs, young scholars are learning computer programming. It sounds like a dream school, but it’s happening every Saturday morning and weekday afternoons at the Newburgh Armory Unity Center in the City of Newburgh, N.Y. Janine Bixler and Rebecca Norman, professors of Education at Mount Saint Mary College and codirectors of the college’s Collaborative for Equity in Literacy Learning (CELL), have helped hundreds of children in the Newburgh community – and generations of Mount teacher candidates – to benefit from the free educational programing at the Armory. And all it takes to start, they note, is one Saturday morning. In the Armory’s signature Saturday Morning Enrichment Program, children of all ages participate in reading, writing,

math, natural science, and computer science programs with the goal of developing their scholastic ability, as well as their life skills and emotional intelligence. “I love that kids come to learn on a Saturday morning about topics that are interesting to them,” said Norman. “My son took flying lessons and learned how to play chess, my daughter has participated in our program as well as sewing and other programs. As a parent, I have seen how engaging these programs can be.” For the children of the Armory, the sessions afford small group and one-on-one

tutoring, and increase their literacy skills in a fun and engaging way. This is in-line with the vision of Armory founder and board chair William Kaplan, an entrepreneur and philanthropist from Newburgh who says that offering such programs will help reduce poverty and eliminate the need for educational remediation for participants. As a successful businessman, Kaplan has provided employment for thousands: at the Regal Bag Corporation, which he started in Newburgh shortly after World War II, and then at A.C. Moore arts and crafts, which he co-founded and grew from a single store to

The Newburgh Armory has been changing young lives since 2010. From accessible literacy courses to helping children explore career paths, the Armory hosts a variety of educational programs. Local students not only learn skills that will be helpful to them in school, but can also explore a litany of potential careers and vocations.

As part of CELL, Mount teachercandidates help young Armory students to explore books that reflect various cultural backgrounds and interests of the Newburgh community. “The goal is to create lifelong readers, instead of those who only read because they have to for school,” explained Bixler. For the Mount Education students, teaching at the Armory extends beyond in-school fieldwork experiences and

“We invite you to make a human investment in the welfare and education of our children,” said Kaplan. The City of Newburgh has experienced this firsthand with excellent results. And any community could emulate that success, he added. creates more effective and culturally aware educators, said Bixler. Teacher candidates benefit from out-of-school community learning experiences to develop knowledge, skills, and experiences “that nurture the whole child with the community.” Norman said that working with children of different ability levels in cross-aged classes at the Armory helps to prepare Mount teacher-candidates for a variety of situations that they may experience in their future careers. Mount students “get to try techniques that might not be available during the

school day,” Norman said. “For example, in Around the World in Stories, we pick a topic – this semester animals – and build upon it throughout the semester. They use a multimodal approach to learning about the animals with videos, a demonstration, and books. This would be harder to do in a classroom, where the curriculum is more rigid.”

Guided by the founding Dominican Sisters, the cornerstone of a Mount Saint Mary College education has always been community. The Armory is one of many places in our region where Mount students volunteer their time, effort, and skill. In addition, students regularly engage in projects such as stocking food pantries, helping with food and clothing drives, facilitating community education, and other worthwhile projects. Local partner organizations have included Newburgh Ministry; Loaves and Fishes; Catholic Charities; Food Bank of the Hudson Valley; Safe Homes of Orange County; and many more.

Kaplan sees the Newburgh Armory Unity Center as a model for other communities throughout the country, large and small. He and his team have created a blueprint for the creation of similar service centers in

December 4, 2022

F

or the Mount Saint Mary College community, the annual Christmas Vespers service of lessons and carols signals the joyous beginning of the holiday season. This was the first time that college has been able to resume the tradition since it was put on hiatus in 2020 and 2021, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The annual service features lessons and carols like “Angels We Have Heard on High.” Towards the end of the service, the audience joined in singing “Silent Night,” during which the lightswere dimmed and the chapel was illuminated with candles. The event was livestreamed by Knight Productions and the students of Merle Becker, instructor of Digital Media Production at the Mount.

Desmond center grand opening June 15, 2023

W

ith a ribbon cutting led by Newburgh Mayor Torrance Harvey ’03, the Mount celebrated the grand opening of the recently renovated Guzman Hall – home of the Desmond Center for Community Engagement and Wellness The Desmond Center provides accessible and equitable educational, health, and wellness services for community members and families in the local area. Programming began in March of 2022 in various locations on- and off-campus. Now, most programs will take place in the new space. The Mount partnered with Mid Hudson Construction Management (MHCM) to create the state-of-the-art wellness center. The updated space boasts a large

community room that offers breathtaking views of the Hudson River, and a variety of multipurpose classroom-style areas for health screenings, exercise programs, and more. The building also introduces revamped space for Desmond Center staff and other Mount offices. The new Guzman Hall also remains true to the Mount’s Dominican heritage, with stained glass from the former Founder’s Chapel repurposed and built into the new design. Other elements, such as a large stained-glass panel that tells the story of St. Dominic, have been retained in their original forms and locations. The grand opening event was sponsored by Affinity by Molina Healthcare.

Challenge of the Decades May 1 - June 30, 2023

M

ount Saint Mary College’s Challenge of the Decades campaign surpassed its goal for student scholarship support, collecting a total of $101,200 in donations from generous alumni.

Other highlights include the 1970s alumni raising the most with $32,470 (nearly $10,000 coming from the Class of 1973 alone), the 1990s alumni donating the first gift of the challenge, and the 1980s alumni donating the final gift of the challenge.

Alumni from each graduation decade competed to raise money for student scholarships. With a goal of $100,000 overall, the decade that had the highest percentage of alumni participation would win the challenge. And after two months, the alumni from the 1960s came out on top.

The Mount’s 1960s alumni were honored with an oversized Adirondack chair in recognition of their dedication to future Mount students at the 2023 Alumni Reunion Weekend.

The college’s Advancement office offered a special thank you to a pair of matching gift donors: Dr. Karen Eberle-McCarthy, professor emerita of Hispanic Studies, and an anonymous Class of 1964 alumna.

Mount scholarships provide an affordable, values-based education to thousands of deserving students, many of whom are among the first in their families to attend college. Thanks to the alumni, students who were in need of support can continue their education at the Mount. Mount Saint Mary College

Meet the new staff

Tom & Amanda

M

ount Saint Mary College’s Advancement team recently welcomed two new employees to the fold: Amanda Swan, Director of Annual Giving; and Tom Burnham, Director of Principal Gifts. Swan joined the Mount in April of 2023 and hit the ground running in her new role. As Director of Annual Giving, Swan builds relationships with alumni and the community to increase financial support and funding for scholarships essential to student recruitment and retention. In her first months at the college, she led many of the Mount’s annual giving campaigns, including the Challenge of the Decades, Go Blue, and is planning Knight Nation for the spring. “I have enjoyed working with our alumni, faculty, and staff in fundraising efforts and look forward to building on our successes this coming year,” she said. Swan has an extensive background in annual and major gifts and grant writing, with experience at national organizations such as the American Red Cross. She worked in the education field before joining the Mount’s staff, including at SUNY New Paltz as a Major Gift Officer and at Green Chimneys Children’s Services. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Anthropology from Sweet Briar College and is also a licensed veterinary technician. The New Paltz resident has one dog, Odin, and a cat, Leia.

Tom Burnham, Director of Principal Gifts

Burnham recently joined the Mount’s Advancement team in November 2023 as the new Director of Principal Gifts. In this role, he assists donors in making gifts that support scholarships and other initiatives at the college. He also supports all activities of the Advancement Office to further the Mount’s mission of education and service. “This is an exciting time to be a part of Mount Saint Mary College,” he said. “We are at an inflection point and there is a lot of positive energy around what is happening here. Scholarships are important to making an education accessible here at the Mount, and that will be a focus for me and the Advancement Office.” Burnham has served the majority

of his career working in the disability services field, primarily with The Center for Discovery in Harris, N.Y. There, Burnham spent more than two decades building relationships with families and donors to grow The Center into one of New York State’s largest programs for children and adults with disabilities and complex conditions. He looks forward to building the same kinds of relationships here at the Mount with students, alumni, families, and friends. He grew up in the Catskill Mountains along the Beaverkill River and is a graduate of Gettysburg College. He lives in Goshen, N.Y. with his wife Liz, daughter Caroline, son Tommy, and his dog Ralph. New scholarships honor pillars of the Mount

T

he Sr. Ann Sakac Endowed Scholarship and the Sr. Leona DeBoer Endowed Scholarship for Nursing will greatly impact current and future Mount students. Consider making a donation at msmc.edu/NewScholarships or use the QR code and indicate either of these scholarship funds. Sr. Ann and Sr. Leona will be notified of all gifts made in their honor. The Sr. Ann Sakac Endowed Scholarship was established thanks to a $100,000 gift from Penny Ducker, Class of 1973. This scholarship will be used to support new incoming students, with financial need and the academic aptitude to succeed at the Mount. Under her 32-year leadership at the college, Sr. Ann oversaw much of the college's expansion from a fledging institution to a pillar of the community. The Sr. Leona DeBoer Endowed Scholarship for Nursing was created and endowed by an anonymous donor to support new incoming Nursing students with financial need and the desire to serve our community through nursing. Sr. Leona was the inaugural Dean for our School of Nursing and built our Nursing program. Decades of Nursing alumni credit Sr. Leona for their stellar education; career success; and life skills.
