Whether your goal is to introduce your baby or toddler to the world of music, or to learn to play an instrument at age 6 or 106, the Mount Royal University Conservatory has a program for you. From advanced programs for elite young professionals to adult beginner classes to music appreciation, the Mount Royal University Conservatory’s programs serve diverse learners who have one thing in common — a love of music and speech arts.
We have played a pivotal role in Calgary’s performing arts scene since 1911, enabling people of all ages and abilities to take part in the performing arts. Now the largest institution of our kind in Canada, we are unique in the breadth and scope of our programming, serving a large and diverse community. Our mission is to nurture the artistic potential in everyone, and identify and train the great artists of tomorrow. We teach more than 4,000 students every year and welcome tens of thousands of others from our community to attend our festivals, concerts and special events.

Facilities The stunning Bella Concert Hall is at the heart of the Taylor Centre for the Performing Arts. The 787-seat venue is host to our new 2016-17 MRU Conservatory Concert Season: Music To Your Ears. It is also the new home of the Wyatt Concert Series featuring distinguished visiting faculty from around the globe. Perhaps most importantly, it is the stage where many of tomorrow’s stars of classical music will play their first public performances, experiencing the magical connection that is only possible with a live audience.

The Taylor Centre for the Performing Arts is also home to the TransAlta Pavilion, classrooms and studios to serve Conservatory students and faculty, as well as organizations that rent the facilities for meetings, performances and events.

Learn to provide an enriched environment of music and reading for your infant or toddler during these very important first years. Music with Your Baby creates a strong partnership among parent, teacher and child, where you play an important role in developing your child’s full potential. This unique program for babies, newborn to 36 months, is based on the principle that the greatest development of a child’s natural abilities takes place in an environment that is enriched by music and language. The program promotes confidence and selfesteem, increases focus and concentration, increases physical and aural awareness, and fosters a love of music, language and learning that will last throughout your child’s life.

Music & Movement Ages 3-4 Music & Movement (Eurhythmics) combines imaginative play, musical games, singing and instrument playing. Your child will use instruments and equipment such as xylophones, glockenspiels, hand drums, rhythm sticks, Orff instruments, balls, hoops and scarves. Creative movement is an important part of the program. Your child will develop coordination, concentration and self-confidence while learning the fundamentals of music. This program provides a sound basis for children who wish to continue the study of music or dance. Music and Movement is based on ideas developed by educator and musician Emile Jaques-Dalcroze. Early Childhood Programs Kodály Classes
Kodály Level 2
Kodály Musicianship classes create a playful atmosphere where children use the voice as their first instrument. Children are actively engaged as they develop music reading and writing skills that prepare budding musicians for future studies: • in-tune singing • beat, rhythm, melody, form • phrasing, dynamics • tempo and timbre Xylophones and rhythm instruments are used to reinforce concepts first heard through singing. In advanced levels, the recorder is introduced to reinforce music reading skills. Parental involvement is an essential component of the Kodály Program. Parents join their children for the final ten minutes of each class and are encouraged to share musical activities at home. Children have weekly take-home activities to reinforce the lessons.

Early Childhood Strings
This is an un-parented class for 3 and 5 year olds which introduces some of the fundamental elements of music in a playful and holistic way. The children sing, dance and play music on a variety of instruments and develop their intellectual, motor, emotional and social skills.
The Conservatory’s Early Childhood Strings Program provides specialized instructional balance. Your child will benefit by being in a supportive group setting where games and songs provide an enjoyable child-centered environment, while group classes provide you a cost-effective way to ensure your child profits from an exceptional learning experience.

Orff Ensemble For 5 year olds who have taken the Orff classes and 6 or 7 year olds with no previous music experience. The children will learn and create arrangements using un-pitched percussion and Orff instruments (xylophones, etc.). Orff Ensemble

Early Childhood Programs Early Childhood Cello Ensemble Cello group classes are a wonderful complement to private lessons as they allow young cellists to experience the fun of making music with their peers. Children’s daily practice is inspired by sharing their weekly accomplishments through solo performance and being able to celebrate the success of their friends. Technique is improved through scale and arpeggio repetition, focus on in-tune ringing tones and maintaining fine cello posture. Beginning reading, rhythm, and music theory are actively put to use through unison, two and three voice ensemble playing. This program provides weekly performance opportunities and four Saturday morning recitals each year which feature the group and solo repertoire prepared in class. Classes include: • basic music, specific cello and chamber music skills • effective classroom, audience and performance behaviour • extended cello techniques learned through accompanied storytelling • weekly scale, arpeggio and technical bow work • important music theory and reading tools • solo performance opportunities with piano accompaniment • the inspiring experience of putting all above together while creating music with their friends All young cellists are welcome, however, in the best interest of the student, they must also have a regular private lesson instructor. Early Childhood Programs Suzuki Programs For ages 3+ All Mount Royal University Conservatory Suzuki programs are endorsed by the Suzuki Association of the Americas and the European Suzuki Association. Each program delivers musical and instrumental instruction in accordance with the proven Suzuki method instructional philosophy: • learning to play an instrument in the same way they learn to speak their native language with a step-by-step process based on listening, watching, and building their own “musical-instrumental vocabulary” • supportive atmosphere, tailored to the learning pace of each child • musical and instrumental skills gained though step-by-step learning • learning instrumental skills before learning to read music and play simultaneously • individual attention in private lessons, and group learning in a positive social environment • parental involvement

You will attend all your child’s classes and be a practice coach at home. To prepare you for this role, you will participate in Suzuki training prior to your child’s first lessons.

The first of its kind in North America and taught by the Mount Royal University Conservatory’s Natalie DeJong, the first accredited Suzuki trumpet instructor in North America, this program will pilot the use of the first Suzuki trumpet book.
Every child can learn to play the guitar at a high level. Listening to recordings of guitar repertoire, parental involvement, group classes, daily practice and encouragement are key elements of the Suzuki method. Carefully chosen repertoire will enable your child to build excellent technique and musicianship from a solid foundation of musical awareness.
The year-long program provides balance between working on musical literacy and gaining instrumental skills so that students develop the ability to read music and to play the instrument with beautiful tone and strong technique.
Suzuki Piano
To make studying classical guitar fun we play musical games and learn one step at a time. In addition to weekly lessons, your child will learn from other students in bi-monthly group classes and frequent recitals. These learning opportunities will further your child’s playing skills and motivation.
Piano students in the Suzuki Method learn music in a simple and direct way, similar to the way they learn to speak. Throughout the Suzuki growing process, your child thrives in an atmosphere of continual support and understanding. Every aspect of the Suzuki program is dedicated to the child — from repertoire, lesson length and seating at the instrument to the positive pedagogic approach. Parents participate actively, attending lessons and practicing with their child at home.

Artio Choir 15+ yrs
The Calgary Boys’ Choir has delighted music lovers with their beautiful tone and clear pure sound for over 40 years, bringing the choir critical and public acclaim. The Calgary Boys’ Choir not only enriches the lives of our members and Calgarians, but brings the music of Calgary’s youth to the entire world.
The name Artio is derived from the Celtic word for bear, and was the name of a Gallo-Roman goddess who often took the form of a bear. She represented creative, bold and emergent abundance — all qualities that describe the singers who make up Mount Royal Artio and what they do. Artio specializes in choral music that is distinct, demanding, diverse and innovative. They explore a variety of genres from early music through to innovative creations being crafted by today’s composers. They re-imagine and re-invent music of the past and embrace the avant-garde music of tomorrow as they continually seek to push the boundaries of choral music and performance.

Arietta Choir 5-10 yrs One of Mount Royal Conservatory’s youngest choral groups, Arietta provides an opportunity for young singers to begin a life-long journey in music. Using choral repertoire, vocal and musical literacy is carefully developed, while allowing our singers to build social and emotional connections as they pursue musical excellence with new friends. Arietta regularly shares their gift of music with the Calgary community, and performs with Mount Royal Conservatory’s family of choirs on Calgary’s finest stages. Arietta Choir (ages 5-10) Wednesday

Arioso Choir 9-14 yrs The choral programs at Mount Royal University allow singers to develop their musicianship from early childhood into adulthood. Arioso provides singers aged 9-14 the opportunity to pursue and experience the challenge, joy and reward of singing the highest calibre of choral music. We offer exceptional musicianship instruction, varied performance opportunities, touring, community building, social growth, and a passion for excellence. Arioso singers have shared the stage with international choirs, including the Vienna Boys’ Choir, at the 2014 World Peace Choral Festival in Vienna. Mount Royal Artio presents a final choral music performance each year that fuses music with innovative ideas and other art forms — “choral theatre” performances that draw upon the talent and imagination of their members. Kantorei Choir (Adult) Mount Royal’s Kantorei, established in 1995 by Founding Director David Ferguson, has been on the Calgary choral scene for over 20 years. Kantorei is an auditioned mixed-voice adult choir that has always championed a varied repertoire from Mozart to Whitacre. Emphasis is placed on the classical music of all periods, but focus is also placed on Canadian repertoire and contemporary works. Kantorei offers individual vocal coaching to all of their members. Through its connection with the Mount Royal Conservatory, the choir aims to strengthen both the musical and vocal skills of individual members and the ensemble as a whole. Calgary Zhi-Yin Choir The Calgary Zhi-Yin Choir was founded in September 2004 by conductor Shana Yang. This group is comprised of enthusiastic members who are not only committed to choir, but also to community service. The choir’s mandate is to promote multiculturalism in Canada through Chinese arts by enriching the appreciation of music to its members. Translated into English, “Zhi-Yin” means friends in music. Orchestras & String Ensembles The Orchestral Program at the Mount Royal Conservatory provides a quality ensemble experience for young string, woodwind, brass and percussion players from Calgary and surrounding area. With six strings-based ensembles and one full orchestra, the Mount Royal Conservatory string orchestra program is one of the most comprehensive in Canada.
Junior Orchestra Program The Junior Orchestra Program offers five ensembles for string players ages 7-15. By audition, students are placed in the ensemble that best suits their needs, at the discretion of the Junior Orchestra Program Coordinator and ensemble directors. Preparatory Strings: the entry-level ensemble for strings. All first year orchestra members will start in this group. Pre-Chamber Strings A & B: string orchestras in which members benefit from further ensemble skills in preparation for the Chamber or Junior Strings. Most players have one year of experience in the Preparatory Strings or its equivalent. Chamber Strings: a small orchestra for ages 8-12 who will benefit from detailed training. Members should have at least 2 years of orchestral training. Junior Strings: a large string ensemble investigating more advanced repertoire for orchestra members ages 10-15. Minimum RCM Grade IV level preferred.
Calgary Youth Orchestra The Calgary Youth Orchestra (CYO) is the flagship orchestra in Mount Royal Conservatory’s Orchestral Program. Internationally recognized as one of Canada’s leading youth orchestras, the CYO provides solid training in orchestral playing with professional coaching from some of the best local, national and international clinicians and conductors. Workshops with guest conductors and visiting orchestras are a regular program feature. The CYO performs a series of concerts throughout the year and participates in the annual Alberta Youth Orchestra Symposium with the Edmonton Youth Orchestra in Banff. Since 1970 the orchestra has toured internationally, and continues to do so, usually every second year. Acceptance into the orchestra is by competitive audition in May each year, and is open to students aged 14 to 24. The CYO is supported by the Calgary Youth Orchestra Society, an independent not-for-profit society which works to provide enhanced performance opportunities for the orchestra.

Conservatory Strings Conservatory Strings is an award-winning ensemble for advanced string players, ages 12 to 16. This orchestra performs music from the professional repertoire, and a high degree of commitment is expected. In addition to weekly rehearsals, players participate in an annual workshop with a guest conductor. The Conservatory Strings have produced two CDs, and have been recorded by the CBC.

We make music in a fun, non-threatening, non-competitive, positive environment. If you would like an opportunity to learn to play an instrument in a group setting, much like a school band, this is the group for you. No previous experience is required. You will start with the basics and keep learning. If you have been inactive in your playing for some time, this is an opportunity to re-learn your instrument.

Basic, Intermediate and Advanced: Learn the essential building blocks of music theory: notes, scales, keys, chords and rhythms. Also includes aural skills (interval recognition, sight singing, cadence recognition, melodic dictation).
Harmony Basic: Laying the foundation for further studies in Harmony, Counterpoint, Analysis and Composition. Intermediate: A continuation of Basic Harmony, exploring the minor mode and introducing the process of modulation (changing key) and the use of 7th chords. Advanced: Demonstrates how the Romantic composers expanded on the style of Classical composers, with special emphasis on chromatic harmony. The Counterpoint portion of Advanced Harmony hones melody-writing skills and culminates in the student’s creation of two-part contrapuntal compositions.

World Music Mount Royal University Conservatory is going global! This year, the Conservatory is excited to expand our music programs to include: Chinese Classical Music, Raga Musici and Japanese Taiko Drumming.
Chinese Classical Music Private Lessons Calgary is a global platform for music, as the city is home to many culturally diverse communities. Eager to promote Eastern Classical music studies at Mount Royal Conservatory, we are excited to announce that students interested in Chinese classical music now have to opportunity to study Erhu, Dizi, Guzheng, and voice at the Taylor Centre for the Performing Arts. China has a historically rich musical tradition whose influence has had far reaching impact inspiring the work of composers and musicians throughout the world. Erhu A two stringed bowed instrument, it is one of the most popular and versatile Chinese musical instruments. Capable of playing lyrically beautiful melodies or high energy virtuosic works, the erhu can be heard in traditional as well as contemporary music, even being featured as a solo instrument with western style orchestras. Dizi A Chinese transverse flute made of bamboo. The dizi is an expressive instrument and widely used in Chinese folk music, Chinese opera, and is a key instrument in today’s modern Chinese orchestra. Students will enjoy exploring the energy and brilliance of the dizi under the instruction of Jiajia Li a passionate and active flute performer who plays both dizi and western transverse flute Guzheng The Chinese zither is a plucked string instrument with a rich history. The guzheng is the most commonly played Chinese classical instrument due to the instruments ability to accompany as well as be a featured melodic instrument. Repertoire for this instrument is broad and takes advantage of the unique sound and character of the instrument. Voice As with all forms of music around the world, the voice is a key musical element, capable of infusing music with text. Ancient and modern Chinese poetry has inspired composers across history resulting in a wealth of music for voice that touches on every emotion and aspect of life, making the voice the most expressive of instruments. Taiko Drumming Taiko is the art of Japanese drumming. Traditionally performed for religious, theatre, and communication purposes, taiko is developing into a popular performance art. Taiko is now seen in many countries around the world, and Canada’s first taiko ensemble was formed in 1979. Private Lessons Every person, every age, and every level of development Private lessons are available in all areas of music and speech instruction for all ages and levels of development, either on-campus or in many Calgary communities taught by highly qualified professional teachers and performers with real-life musical experience. Lessons taught in a variety of styles including: blues, classical, contemporary, country, flamenco, folk, jazz, latin, popular, rock, traditional, and much more. All tailored to your interests. Academy for Gifted Youth Entrance to all Academy programs is by audition only. Applications will be accepted starting Wednesday, February 15 and close Friday, April 14, 2017. An enrichment program providing intensive musical training of the highest quality to today’s outstanding young artists. The Academy Program offers participants a balanced, performancebased course of study, as well as opportunities to meet and perform with professional musicians and renowned teachers. Specific training includes sessions with acclaimed musicians in private lessons, small group classes and masterclasses; individual sessions with an assigned collaborative pianist; chamber music coachings; frequent recitals aimed at developing confidence and stage presence, and participation in a large ensemble for those students who play orchestral instruments. Through regular performances, participants gain valuable experience in a variety of settings for audiences that may consist of their peers, faculty members, guest artists and the public. The Academy Program offers gifted young musicians the opportunity to progress at an accelerated pace. Graduates who continue with their musical studies are much sought-after by leading post-secondary music schools both in Canada, the United States and Europe. The Academy Program’s reputation is known and respected throughout the world.
Strings, Piano, Woodwinds, Brass & Percussion The Academy’s instrumental program is divided into four levels: Junior Academy: for students ages 6-12 who would benefit from the extensive technical enrichment provided at this level. Emphasis is on developing technical proficiency and musical skills; Intermediate Academy: for students between the ages of 8 and 14 who are playing advanced repertoire, but who are still developing their performance skills; Associate Academy: for students ages 10+ who are playing advanced repertoire (RCM Grade 8 and up); and Senior Academy: students ages 10-18 who are playing advanced repertoire and are musically mature. In addition, we are pleased to offer an Honours class, which is suitable for extraordinary young talents accelerating at a pace beyond their age. New students are placed in the program based on the results of their audition, while those already in the Academy are required to re-audition yearly to maintain or move on to the next level. Students not placed into one of these levels may be considered for Academy Participant status.
Guitar The Academy guitar program is for enthusiastic, ambitious young players seeking a well-rounded music education. This cost-effective program is designed as a supplement to a student’s private guitar lessons, offering a group environment where they may further develop their playing ability, performance skills, theoretical foundation and overall musicianship. With Junior, Intermediate, Associate and Senior levels, the program includes dedicated young players as well as aspiring professionals. Voice This is a comprehensive, credit-free training program for singers ages 13-19 who exhibit a sincere desire and the vocal talent to become a classical singer. The vocal program is a supplement to private voice lessons, focusing on the educational needs of the developing singer and offering large and small ensemble performing experience. Singing in monthly recitals is required and lectures pertaining to the study of classical voice are part of this program. Wyatt Artist in Residence Program In music, as in other disciplines, artists often point to an educational encounter with, or transformational performance by a great artist as the inspiration for their commitment to a life in the performing arts. The Wyatt Artist in Residence Program strives to provide our Academy students with those transformational experiences, bringing them together with the very best mentors in their field and closing the loop between emerging talent and truly great artists of our time. This important component of the Academy for Gifted Youth was initiated by an anonymous supporter in honour of Hal Wyatt and his wife, Marnie. Since its inception, the Wyatt program has afforded our students the opportunity to hear and study with an incredible array of true international stars in intimate masterclass settings. Past artists in residence include: James Ehnes, Nicola Benedetti and Ian Swensen, violin; Laurence Lesser, Lynn Harrell and Franz Helmerson, cello; Anton Kuerti, Gabriela Montero and Yuja Wang, piano; the Assad Brothers, guitar; Susanne Mentzer, Russell Braun and New York Polyphony, voice; and the New Orford and Vogler quartets. Advanced Performance Program Applications are accepted between Nov. 15, 2016 and Feb. 15, 2017 A unique program for aspiring professional musicians who wish to intensively hone their performance technique, musicianship, and collaboration skills in an inspiring, supportive environment. In our program, highly self-motivated students, while being artistically challenged, will have the flexibility to work toward their goals and prepare themselves to succeed in future academic and professional endeavors. The Advanced Performance Program is for music students at the undergraduate, graduate, and post-graduate levels. However, exceptional students of high school age will also be considered. The Advanced Performance Program is an intensive, non-credit program which runs from September to May each year and can be pursued for 1, 2 or 3 years.

Raghav is a globally recognized singer, songwriter and Calgarian. He has released 3 studio albums (Storyteller, Identity & The Phoenix) which include singles that have charted in the UK, Canada and around the world. Always creating, he continues to collaborate with world-renowned artists like Nelly, Kardinal Offishall and A. R. Rahman. Raghav performs his debut at the Bella Concert Hall with a new concert experience for his hometown fans.
One of the most versatile and soulful musicians in jazz, drummer and composer Brian Blade moved to New Orleans at age 18 to perform with Crescent City stars, Ellis Marsalis, Johnny Vidacovich and Harold Battiste. While developing as a bandleader, he formed The Fellowship Band with Jon Cowherd and Chris Thomas. In 2000, he joined jazz legend Wayne Shorter’s all-star quartet who toured the world and recorded four albums, including GRAMMY® Awardwinning Without a Net.

Since its debut in 1999, the Canadian Guitar Quartet (CGQ) has toured extensively in North and South America, from one standing ovation to the next, establishing a reputation as one of the finest guitar ensembles in the world. The CGQ has appeared with orchestras across Canada, and has recorded three critically acclaimed CDs. Their mix of dynamic original music and classical masterpieces make a CGQ concert an unforgettable experience.
Sophocles’ classic play Antigone resonates with flamenco, which is based not in any one culture or region, but on the strength of family. Noche Flamenca’s Artistic Director Martín Santangelo was inspired to create a flamenco interpretation focusing on her humanity and quest to bury her brother, regardless of the circumstances. The company’s mission is to create a diverse theatrical performance through song, music and dance that expresses a spellbinding aesthetic in the form of flamenco.

Come enter the magical world of The Queen, the Bear & the Bumblebee, based on the award-winning CD with story by Dini Petty and music by Canadian composers Andrew Homzy and Mark Goldman. This Calgary-born production led by Erin Thrall will feature new choreography by Yukichi Hattori, narration by Samantha Whelan Kotkas, special guest soloists and the Bumblebee Band and Children’s Choir.
A master of Afro-Cuban folkloric music, Pedro Pablo “Pedrito” Martinez plays the monumentally complex Oru seco exquisitely on each drum, or on all three at once. He’s also the world’s firstcall rumbero – playing, singing and dancing with dozens of groups on over 100 recordings and appearing in films including Calle 54 (2000) and Chico & Rita (2010). Pedrito has collaborated with Wynton Marsalis, Paul Simon, Bruce Springsteen, Sting, Bruno Mars, Lady Gaga and more.

Zukerman Trio
Calgary-born pianist Jan Lisiecki’s insightful interpretations, refined technique, and affinity for art give him a musical voice that belies his age. In 2013, he received the Leonard Bernstein Award at the Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival and was named Gramophone magazine’s Young Artist of the Year. Highlights include his performance with Claudio Abbado and Orchestra Mozart and BBC Proms with Sir Antonio Pappano. To rave reviews, he debuted at Carnegie Hall with Yannick Nézet-Séguin in January 2016.
A prodigious talent recognized worldwide for his artistry, Pinchas Zukerman has been an inspiration to young musicians throughout his life. In a continuing effort to motivate future generations of musicians through education and outreach, the renowned artist teamed up with cellist Amanda Forsyth and pianist Angela Cheng to offer trio repertoire to their worldwide audiences. The ensemble has appeared in Japan, China, Spain, Italy, France, Hungary, South Africa, Istanbul, Russia and throughout the United States.
