Minors

ALTERNATIVE ENTRANCE OPTIONS

There isn’t a one-size-fits-all approach to starting university. If you don’t yet meet the admission requirements or the competitive average for your desired program, MRU’s alternative entrance options can help get you where you want to go.

University Entrance Option

Boost your grades or complete missing admission requirements for entry into an MRU degree or diploma program. With a flexible curriculum, UEO lets you start university-level courses that may transfer to your intended program while building skills and exploring your options. It doesn’t guarantee admission, but it’s a supportive way to strengthen your application and get started.

Open Studies

Open Studies lets you try university-level courses to help you find the right program or complete Grade 12 equivalent courses to meet admission requirements. With a flexible learning structure and the freedom to explore different courses and program options, you can find the right fit for you. Plus, completed courses may be transferable to your future MRU degree or diploma program.

Academic Upgrading

Improve your high school grades or pick up missing courses for a stronger application. Academic upgrading in English, math, biology, chemistry, science, social science and physics can help you meet admission criteria and become a stronger applicant for your chosen program. Our courses cover the approved Alberta high school curriculum as well as additional skills that prepare students for first-year university coursework.

Indigenous University Bridging Program

Get a feel for university life while upgrading courses or improving your grades for admission to your intended MRU program. This program combines academic upgrading and university prep with Indigenous cultural content and community connection. You’ll also receive support from the Iniskim Centre — offering tutoring, advising, social events and visits from Elders and community members.

Learn English for Academic Purposes (LEAP)

Improve your English for university admission or career advancement. LEAP offers four levels of high-quality instruction to build the academic language skills you need. Expert instructors support your transition from language learning to credit courses. A minimum of CLB 4 or IELTS 4.0 is recommended for success.

International Student Pathway

For international students outside Canada or the U.S. who are missing admission requirements for an MRU program. This pathway lets you complete the highest level of MRU’s Learn English for Academic Purposes (LEAP 4) and any needed high school courses while starting postsecondary classes toward your intended degree or diploma. You may also be eligible for a conditional offer of admission.

DIRECT-ENTRY DIPLOMAS AND CERTIFICATES

Direct-entry diploma and certificate programs combine theory with hands-on learning to prepare you for work in your chosen field. Connected directly to industry, they include significant experiential learning opportunities through practicum, outreach, labs and other work experience opportunities. Your program will prepare you for the required accreditation and/or licensing with the professional association, college or regulator in your field.

Funeral Service Education

Mount Royal offers three programs that prepare you for entry-level roles in the funeral service profession. The programs integrate online theory and experiential learning through the completion of supervised practicums and work experience. In many cases, the work experience courses can be completed in the community of your choice, however, relocation may be required.

Embalmer Certificate

Specialize in embalming and restorative arts through part-time studies. The Embalmer Certificate consists of 10 courses (465 hours) that may be completed in one year to a maximum of six years. Students are prepared for the embalmer licensing practical exam.

Funeral Director Certificate

Concentrate on funeral directing through part-time studies. Students are prepared to become licensed as a funeral director. The Funeral Director Certificate consists of 12 courses (1,815 hours) that may be completed in one year to a maximum of six years.

Funeral Service Diploma

Prepare to license as a funeral director and an embalmer through full-time or part-time studies. The Funeral Service Diploma consists of 20 courses (1,847 hours) that may be completed in one year to a maximum of six years.

Massage Therapy Diploma

Learn how to assess clients and use therapeutic massage techniques to reduce pain, support healing and improve wellness. This accredited 2,200-hour program meets national standards and combines classroom learning with hands-on training in areas like anatomy, biomechanics and client assessment. You’ll gain experience through a student-run clinic and community outreach, completing 330 hours of supervised practice. This diploma is accredited by the Canadian Massage Council for Accreditation and recognized by professional associations and regulatory colleges.

Personal Fitness Trainer Diploma

Help people of all abilities reach their health and fitness goals safely and effectively. Learn how to assess fitness levels, design personalized training programs and apply proven techniques in strength training, injury prevention and exercise science. You’ll build your skills through a mix of classroom learning and supervised practicum experiences in the fitness community. This program meets the academic requirements for national certification with the Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology.

POST-BACHELOR’S PROGRAMS

Mount Royal University's post-bachelor certificates are for individuals who have previously completed a degree at a post-secondary institution.

Your MRU application allows you to apply to two programs for no extra cost. Including two programs on your application is highly recommended as it increases your chances of getting an offer and starting on your academic journey.

Applications for MRU’s fall semester open Oct. 1, 2025. Programs in high demand can fill up fast, so we recommend applying during the Early Admission period, which runs from Oct. 1, 2025 to Feb. 1, 2026. Based on space and availability, applications for most programs continue to be accepted beyond this date.

Your admission category is determined by the Admissions department once they have received your application and required documents. Your category defines the courses and grades that will be used to calculate your competitive and final admission average. Applicants are required to disclose all previous high school and post-secondary attendance in their application.
