 ORCHESTRAS AND ENSEMBLES All orchestras and ensembles run September through May. Acceptance is by audition.

Calgary Chinese Orchestra

Founded in 1997, the Calgary Chinese Orchestra promotes and creates awareness of Chinese classical music. The orchestra performs at community and cultural events, and charity and fundraising activities, as well as at an annual concert. The group is a fun and non-competitive environment for those interested in learning Chinese music and instruments. All rehearsals are in English. Ages 7+

Calgary Youth Orchestra

The Calgary Youth Orchestra (CYO) is the flagship orchestra in Mount Royal Conservatory’s Orchestral Program. Internationally recognized as one of Canada’s leading youth orchestras, the CYO provides solid training in orchestral playing, with professional coaching from some of the best local, national and international clinicians and conductors. Workshops with guest conductors and visiting orchestras are regular program features. The CYO performs a series of concerts throughout the year and participates in the annual Alberta Youth Orchestra Symposium with the Edmonton Youth Orchestra in Banff. Since 1970, the orchestra has toured internationally and continues to do so, usually every second year. Acceptance into the orchestra is by competitive audition in May. Ages 14 – 24

Chamber Strings

This is a small orchestra for musicians aged eight to 12 who will benefit from detailed training. Members should have at least two years of orchestral training. Ages 8 – 12

Conservatory Sinfonia

The Conservatory Sinfonia is for advanced string, woodwind and brass players. In addition to weekly rehearsals, players participate in an annual workshop with a guest conductor, the Conservatory’s annual Winter Fantasia concert and other performance opportunities that may arise during the term. Ages 12 – 18

De Boeck Jazz Combo

For jazz students and enthusiasts alike, this Jazz Combo class provides the opportunity to develop ensemble and improvisational skills necessary to perform in a jazz context. Ages 16+
