Withdrawal policy

Refund policy

Withdrawal from a course may be requested on or before the official course end date. A “W” grade will be assigned and recorded on your official academic transcript. No tuition refund will be issued. If you stop attending classes and do not follow the official withdrawal procedure, you will receive a failing grade.

You are encouraged to consult with your instructor before withdrawing from a course.

All refunds are subject to an administration fee of 10 percent of course tuition (up to a maximum of $50). In all cases, when a refund is issued before the course start date, the course will not appear on the academic transcript.

Note: Some courses or programs have special withdrawal policies that supersede this Withdrawal Policy. Refer to your confirmation of registration letter.

These online courses — taught by horticulturalists, scientists and marketing specialists with experience in the cannabis industry — position you at the forefront of this booming business. Gain specialized skills and knowledge designed to meet the demand for a trained workforce in the cannabis sector, which is predicted to reach $22.6 billion within five years. The curriculum has a strong focus on understanding and complying with the Cannabis Act. The Cannabis Education Program instructs producers, marketers, financial controllers, quality assurance experts and potential entrepreneurs about best practices and regulatory compliance. The Faculty of Continuing Education and Extension at Mount Royal University is offering the Cannabis Education Program in partnership with the Continuing and Professional Studies Division of B.C.’s Kwantlen Polytechnic University (KPU).

The Advanced Cyber Security Extension Certificate develops additional competencies and a more thorough understanding of the eight knowledge areas required for the CISSP designation. The certificate is scheduled to align with CISSP exam dates so graduates can write the exam while the course material is still fresh in their minds.

Withdrawal policy For class lessons, there is a no-refund policy. In extenuating circumstances, the student may file an appeal in writing to the program administrator, general programs, requesting a refund. If approved, a $50 administration fee will be deducted from the refund.

If a student formally withdraws from private lessons before the fourth scheduled lesson, a refund will be made equal to the tuition paid, less a $50 processing fee and the cost of four lessons. Withdrawals made after the fourth scheduled lesson will not receive a refund.

For all withdrawals and refund requests, the instructor will provide an accurate, correct record of all lessons scheduled.

Private lessons are available in all areas of music and speech instruction for all ages and levels of development. Lessons are taught by highly qualified professional teachers and performers with real-life musical experience. They are taught in a variety of styles, including blues, classical, contemporary, country, flamenco, folk, jazz, Latin, popular, rock, traditional and more.

Participants hone their performance skills and gain essential artistic experience in a variety of settings, including performances for audiences that may consist of peers, faculty members, guest artists and the public. The Academy Program’s reputation is known and respected throughout the world, with many of its sought-after graduates continuing their musical studies in leading post-secondary music schools in Canada, the United States and Europe.

The Vocal Academy is a program for enthusiastic, ambitious young singers seeking to enhance their opportunities and development in classical voice study. This cost-effective program is designed as a supplement to a student’s private voice lessons.

The program offers a supportive environment in which singers may further develop their vocal abilities and hone their performance skills by participating in monthly recitals and group ensembles. Additionally, the program includes instruction in lyric diction, acting, movement and overall musicianship. The program’s student body is made up of dedicated young singers, as well as aspiring professionals.

Wyatt Artist-in-Residence Program The Wyatt Artist-in-Residence Program provides Academy students with transformational mentorship experiences, from emerging talent to great artists of our time.

Past artists-in-residence include James Ehnes, The Kronos Quartet, Johannes Moser and Yuja Wang.

 ADVANCED PERFORMANCE PROGRAM Applications are accepted until April 15, 2020.

The Advanced Performance Program is an intensive, performance-based program that advances the performance technique, musicianship and collaboration skills of highly self-motivated individuals who want to succeed in future professional performing arts endeavours.

The pursuit of a music degree necessitates studies that include theory, history, composition and pedagogy, diminishing the amount of time for studying and advancing performance skills. The Advanced Performance Program fills this gap, focusing almost exclusively upon the performance element and the tools required to be a successful performer. Students have opportunities to study with national and international artists, creating invaluable experiences of learning from active performers.

 EARLY CHILDHOOD MUSIC Music with Your Baby

Music with Your Baby creates a strong team composed of parent, teacher and child, where you play an important role in developing your child’s full potential.

The 45-minute classes, held weekly, take place in an environment enriched by music and language. The program promotes confidence and self-esteem, increases focus and concentration, strengthens physical and aural awareness, and fosters a love of music, language and learning that will last throughout your child’s life.

Music and Movement

Music and Movement combines imaginative play, musical games, singing and instrument playing. Kodály classes Kodály musicianship classes create a playful atmosphere where children use the voice as their first instrument.

Children are actively engaged as they develop music skills — including in-tune singing, rhythm, tempo, melody and dynamics — through voice and select instruments.

Parental involvement is an essential component of the Kodály program. Parents join their children for the final 10 minutes of each 45-to-60-minute class and are encouraged to share musical activities at home.

Children’s Early Cello Ensembles

Cello group classes are a wonderful complement to private lessons as they allow young cellists to experience the fun of making music with their peers. This program provides weekly performance opportunities and four Saturday morning recitals each year, featuring the group and solo repertoire prepared in class.

Early Childhood Strings

This program is delivered in a supportive group setting, where games, storytelling, solfege and songs provide an enjoyable child-centered environment. After one to two years, students will be able to play with good posture, exhibit technical fundamentals, perform simple melodies and properly care for their instruments.

In addition, studies show there are many non-musical benefits for your child. These include improved discrimination of pitch, enhanced reading abilities, better memory and cognitive flexibility and increased fine motor skills.

All Mount Royal University Conservatory Suzuki programs are endorsed by the Suzuki Association of the Americas and the European Suzuki Association. Each program delivers musical and instrumental instruction in accordance with the proven Suzuki method instructional philosophy. Students learn to plan an instrument step-bystep based on listening, watching and reading while building their own musical vocabulary.

Parents attend all classes and coach at home.

Guitar

Every child can learn to play the guitar at a high level. Carefully chosen repertoire enables your child to build excellent technique and musicianship from a solid foundation of musical awareness.In addition to weekly lessons, your child learns from other students in bi-monthly group classes and frequent recitals. These learning opportunities further your child’s playing skills and motivation.

Piano

Piano students in the Suzuki Method learn music in a simple and direct way, similar to the way they learn to speak. Every aspect of the Suzuki program is dedicated to the child — from repertoire, lesson length and seating at the instrument to the positive pedagogic approach. Parents participate actively, attending lessons and practicing with their child at home.

Trumpet

This year-long program provides a balance between working on musical literacy and gaining instrumental skills so students develop the ability to read music and play their instrument with beautiful tone and strong technique.

Calgary Chinese Orchestra

Founded in 1997, the Calgary Chinese Orchestra promotes and creates awareness of Chinese classical music.

The orchestra performs at community and cultural events, and charity and fundraising activities, as well as at an annual concert. The group is a fun and non-competitive environment for those interested in learning Chinese music and instruments.

All rehearsals are in English.

Calgary Youth Orchestra

The Calgary Youth Orchestra (CYO) is the flagship orchestra in Mount Royal Conservatory’s Orchestral Program.

Internationally recognized as one of Canada’s leading youth orchestras, the CYO provides solid training in orchestral playing, with professional coaching from some of the best local, national and international clinicians and conductors. Workshops with guest conductors and visiting orchestras are regular program features.

The CYO performs a series of concerts throughout the year and participates in the annual Alberta Youth Orchestra Symposium with the Edmonton Youth Orchestra in Banff. Since 1970, the orchestra has toured internationally and continues to do so, usually every second year.

Acceptance into the orchestra is by competitive audition in May. Ages 14 – 24

The cognitive benefits of playing music has been studied for years and the ukulele fits in amazingly well. Some concepts include “hum ‘n’ strum” — singing a lot of songs, understanding a wide variety of rhythms, learning chords, reading notation and tablature. All concepts will be introduced through a wide variety of music styles in a fun environment.

You can learn to play the violin, and play it well, as an adult. A group class is a great way to start. Not only will you get feedback on your progress, you’ll be motivated to practice and have fun making music with others. At the end of eight weeks, you will play with good posture and physical set up, be able play simple melodies, develop your pitch and rhythm, and read simple music. No experience is necessary.

Mount Royal Taiko Drumming

Taiko is the art of Japanese drumming. Traditionally performed for religious, theatrical and communication purposes, taiko is developing into a popular performance art. Taiko is now seen around the world and Canada established its first taiko ensemble in 1979.

No prior musical or drumming experience is necessary to learn and love taiko. Students will be introduced to the art of taiko through games and rhythm exercises. Children will learn about basic technique, proper stance and posture, in addition to learning simple taiko songs.

Taiko: Skills and Drills

Pre-requisite: Introduction to Taiko, or previous taiko experience.

Designed for students who wish to work on their taiko technique and form, this class focuses on skill development and improvement. The goal is for students to gain a deeper understanding of kuchishoga and good beta and naname techniques to prepare for further taiko study. Each session is eight classes.

Upon completion of this course, students are eligible to register for any of the Sunday Taiko classes. * Youth aged 12+ can participate if a parent is also taking the class, but please contact the instructor prior to registration.

Taiko: Repertoire Focus

Pre-requisite: Introduction to Taiko and Taiko: Skills and Drills, or equivalent experience.

This course offers more challenging taiko repertoire with interlocking parts, special skills and new styles. Please contact the instructor for information on which pieces are being taught for each session. The Rocky Mountain Taiko Ensemble’s performance repertoire is selected from the pieces that are taught during this class. Each eightclass session focuses on a different piece.
