Sometimes knowing the benefits of regular exercise is all well and good, but this doesn’t necessarily translate into physical action. Research shows us that 50% of people who start an exercise program will typically drop out within the first six months. We also know that 60% of Australian adults do less than the recommended 30 minutes of moderate exercise per day. Could you be guilty of starting the New Year with all good (healthy) intentions, but now already struggling to keep at it? Let’s help you out here... we’ll start with some important facts: ++ Physical inactivity is one of the main causes of premature death in developed counties. It is linked to chronic illness such as cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes and obesity. ++ One of the most common reasons why people fail to keep to a regular exercise plan is because they start out too hard and soon become demotivated to even go out for a walk. ++ Participation in exercise increases as your ability to do something improves and when you feel your actions are effective. It is for this reason why it is SO important that you maintain exercise even when it feels like a struggle and you don’t feel like you are getting anywhere.

++ Generally it will take at least 10 weeks to begin to enjoy exercise. The first stage (three to four weeks) is always the hardest. This is the period where you don’t really like the thought of exercising, don’t really enjoy the exercise while you are doing it and are exhausted after. If you can get through this stage, you are well on your way, and this is the time we implore you to engage the services of a personal trainer. They can help navigate you through this stage and you can rely on them to motivate you through each session. ++ The next phase is a little easier (weeks four to eight). You don’t look forward to exercise, but are energised during it and although somewhat tired, feel good after. You would need a trainer less during this time as you are more able to motivate yourself. ++ By weeks 8 to 10, believe it or not, you will look forward to each exercise session, enjoy the session and if you can make it to this stage you are generally beginning to make exercise a regular part of your life.
