You’ve probably noticed more changes happening around your club; and here is a summary of what you will be unveiled in the coming months. Terrace Bar The Terrace Bar is currently undergoing a refurbishment, due for completion later this year. The new Terrace Bar will feature an indoor/outdoor offering of food, wine and craft beer with the comfort of contemporary décor and a relaxed, yet sophisticated atmosphere. Bingo, raffles and poker – these regular activities will be relocated during the development. Please ask one of our friendly staff for directions at your next visit. Cash Housie – has been postponed during the refurbishment Naughty Numbers – you can catch Laydee Kinmee and the girls at Mounties Bowling Club of a Thursday evening. Live Music – enjoy live piano near Humphries Road foyer on Friday and Saturday nights as well as a soloist on the outdoor Terrace Bar deck. Member Services and Box Office You can now find Member Services and Box Office in the new permanent location off the new Humphries Road foyer.

Minis Thank you to those parents for their patience during the temporary relocation of Minis. Minis has now returned to the lower ground floor. Children’s Playground As part of the new Fresh Café offering, parents and kids will be able to enjoy the new children’s playground due to be constructed later this year. New Restaurant We are pleased to announce that we will be introducing a modern Cantonese restaurant at the end of the year. This 300-seat restaurant will boast a seafood speciality and popular Yum Cha service that is showcases the best of Asian cuisine. Stay tuned for more information!

Hope is living with courage and confidence, not fear. Each year in Australia approximately 3,200 people are diagnosed with a form of Leukaemia. The fight against cancer is a difficult journey and as a result Mounties has provided funding to support a number of projects that work to create a sense of hope for patients and their families.
One such program is ‘Cooking for Chemo’, organised by the Leukaemia Foundation. The free educational program provided practical advice on improving nutrition for people undergoing chemotherapy for blood cancer, cooking through taste changes, combatting decreased appetite and maintaining weight.

LEGENDS DESCEND ON MOUNTIES OVAL Mounties junior rugby league players received the experience of a lifetime when they recently attended a training session under the watchful eye of current NSW State of Origin Coach Laurie Daley his former fellow Blues stars Brad Fittler and Josh Perry at Mounties Oval. Mounties Group sponsored the clinic as part of the NSW Rugby League’s annual Hogs for the Homeless appeal. Following the coaching clinic, the former Origin players slept under the stars to raise awareness for Father Chris Riley’s Youth off the Streets charity.

MOUNTIES SWIMMING CLUB MAKES A SPLASH! Coming together is a beginning. Keeping together is progress. Working together is success! Mounties Swimming Club has not only brought members of the community together but has celebrated a number of exceptional achievements throughout the past year. The Club had three representative swimmers competing across 12 events at the NSW Metropolitan championships. Congratulations to all representative swimmers over the last couple of months. With 17 personal best times out of 23 entered races, Mounties is proud to boast their successes. Not only does the club compete in state competitions, competing in charity events is another activity on their agenda. Mounties Swimming Club will be participating in the MS 24 Hour Mega Swim event, where teams have a swimmer in the water for the entire 24 hours and compete for laps swum and money raised, in support for people living with multiple

sclerosis. Anyone interested in taking the plunge is more than welcome to register under Mounties Swimming Club on the 24 hour Mega Swim website. Mounties Swimming Club provides opportunities for swimmers at all levels to gain experience in competitive racing. Some members are interested in gaining race experience, some may wish to compete at Metropolitan, State and National level while others join for the social side of being a member of the club. Becoming involved with Mounties Swimming Club will provide an enjoyable, safe and healthy environment to develop swimming skills and promote an active lifestyle. Sometimes knowing the benefits of regular exercise is all well and good, but this doesn’t necessarily translate into physical action. Research shows us that 50% of people who start an exercise program will typically drop out within the first six months. We also know that 60% of Australian adults do less than the recommended 30 minutes of moderate exercise per day. Could you be guilty of starting the New Year with all good (healthy) intentions, but now already struggling to keep at it? Let’s help you out here... we’ll start with some important facts: ++ Physical inactivity is one of the main causes of premature death in developed counties. It is linked to chronic illness such as cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes and obesity. ++ One of the most common reasons why people fail to keep to a regular exercise plan is because they start out too hard and soon become demotivated to even go out for a walk. ++ Participation in exercise increases as your ability to do something improves and when you feel your actions are effective. It is for this reason why it is SO important that you maintain exercise even when it feels like a struggle and you don’t feel like you are getting anywhere.

++ Generally it will take at least 10 weeks to begin to enjoy exercise. The first stage (three to four weeks) is always the hardest. This is the period where you don’t really like the thought of exercising, don’t really enjoy the exercise while you are doing it and are exhausted after. If you can get through this stage, you are well on your way, and this is the time we implore you to engage the services of a personal trainer. They can help navigate you through this stage and you can rely on them to motivate you through each session. ++ The next phase is a little easier (weeks four to eight). You don’t look forward to exercise, but are energised during it and although somewhat tired, feel good after. You would need a trainer less during this time as you are more able to motivate yourself. ++ By weeks 8 to 10, believe it or not, you will look forward to each exercise session, enjoy the session and if you can make it to this stage you are generally beginning to make exercise a regular part of your life. MEKONG AWARDS TWO $10,000 SCHOLARSHIPS Mekong recently announced the winners of its inaugural Mekong Mounties University Scholarship. Julia Nguyen and Kylie Huynh, who are both locals to the Cabramatta area. Mekong originally planned to offer a single scholarship but, as both recipients’ applications were of such high calibre, the club generously decided to award two scholarships of $10,000.

The program, aims to assist and encourage students from low socio-economic and disadvantaged backgrounds to continue with their higher education.
Julia Nguyen, who was awarded DUX at St John’s Park High School, will be undertaking a double degree (Commerce and Arts) with her goal to become a Business Management Consultant. Julia has withstood personal family hardship and recognises the value of resilience and determination. Kylie Huynh, who attended Cabramatta High School in 2015, seeks to complete a Bachelor of Speech Pathology. Kylie recently dedicated her time to organising fundraising for an orphanage in Nepal after the 2015 earthquake.

The Scholarships were open to students of Vietnamese heritage, who finished high school in 2015 and were seeking to commence full-time undergraduate studies in 2016. The applicants were assessed on their academic merit; achievements outside of school, including community involvement; financial hardship; and personal barriers that had been overcome.
