Mounties Group welcomed the Year of the Rabbit and Cat at the Cabramatta Lunar New Year, which was held on Saturday 4 February 2023. Mounties Group is the proud principal sponsor of this annual festival that celebrates the Chinese New Year.
More than 8,000 people joined in on the celebrations that included activations at Mounties Group’s Mekong venue and entertainment from local businesses and community groups.
The town centre of Cabramatta was bustling with activity with families, locals, and people from far and wide enjoying the range of festivities on offer.
Hosted by Fairfield City Council, the annual event is an opportunity for the community to come together and showcase the distinct traditional culture that is rich in our identity. Lunar New Year is a time to celebrate the year that has gone but also wish in the new one by uniting with family and friends.
Amsi is a young Year 11 student who is supported by a local small charity called the Morris Children’s Fund. Amsi is non-verbal and has severe intellectual disabilities, autism and ADHD. As he often experiences dysregulation and comes from a refugee background, it has been challenging to gain engagement with Amsi.
Children with multiple and severe physical disabilities have opportunities to maximise their potential with support that fosters community inclusiveness and ensures understanding for them and their families, thanks to the Morris Children’s Fund.
Mounties is proud to have supported the Morris Children’s Fund with its Musical Therapy Program via the 2022 ClubGRANTS program that has seen incredible outcomes for young Amsi.
“The project provides funding for a specialist teacher to deliver music therapy
to students with moderate to severe physical and/or intellectual disabilities or special needs, who attend local specialist schools,” explained Founder Garry Morris OAM.
“The music therapy program has opened a learning and engagement opportunity not previously evidenced by staff.
“Watching Amsi move in time with the music being played has been a joy for staff. Amsi is now also generalising this engagement by clearly enjoying music provided for him across the school day to assist him with his regulation, particularly when in the playground,” he added. The music therapy program enables students to practice appropriate social skills when sitting side by side with their peers, staff, and when turn-taking. Students are highly motivated and engaged in each session.
“The music therapy sessions give each student the ability to actively participate in learning, using music and musical instruments as the medium for communication, creative expression, and engagement.
“Students, regardless of their capacity have demonstrated their enjoyment and engagement in their session and they are clearly excited when they see that music is on their timetable for the day,” continued Mr Morris.
The benefits of the program extend beyond the classroom as it promotes improved communication and interaction with teachers, family members, and the community.
“Students attending these schools are from a mix of culturally diverse and low socio-economic backgrounds. There is no government funding for this program, and
the cost of private music therapy is beyond the means of most families.
“We are so grateful to receive financial support from Mounties Group. For all the children who participate in the program it is an opportunity to learn and communicate through music and to be creative, expressive, and motivated, and most importantly, to shine and enjoy life –which is fundamental to any child,” he concluded.
This year, Mounties Group’s ClubGRANTS funding has seen more than $1.2 million given back to the local community via 75 projects across Western Sydney, Northern Beaches and Central Coast.

Throughout the years, he has coached multiple national age gold medallists including multiple NSW teams.
Darren has worked as the NSW Institute of Sport Assistant Coach working with 7 Australian Dolphins while also playing a vital role in coaching and developing National Age swimmers with an annual track record of placing swimmers into the various Swimming NSW training squad teams. He has had success both in the pool and in open water and has worked with Australian Paralympic Swimmers over time.
Darren’s passion and commitment to coaching comes with his dedication and effort in his work with the NSW Branch of Swim Coaches and Teachers Australia. Darren has been selected in the Swimming NSW ETS training squad, SNSW State Teams and in 2018 was selected as a coach on the Swimming Australia Talent ID Camp. We look forward to having Darren as part of the Mounties Health & Fitness Swim Team where he aims to build a strong coaching team and develop greater Coaches & Learn to Swim Teachers.
