We are appreciative of your patience whilst we have built the new Harbord Diggers and we hope you will love and enjoy the Diggers for generations to come. The vision for the new Harbord Diggers is to deliver a community asset that combines dining, recreation, entertainment, living, fitness, aquatic, childcare and wellbeing – all in one place. To create a thriving intergenerational community hub; a new dawn for the Diggers.

We are currently preparing to welcome children into our early childhood learning centre, Explore & Develop Freshwater, and residents to their homes in Watermark Freshwater. At the same time, we are getting set to unveil the amazing new hospitality precinct of the Diggers on 30 June, combining three world class restaurants, bars, a café, kids play and entertainment options. All this under one roof, carved out of the headland and boasting magnificent views of the Northern Beaches coastline and Curl Curl Beach.

Harbord Diggers has ridden, driven and heralded change proudly. But the one thing that has remained constant throughout the club’s story are the pillars of community and mateship on which we were founded. With a friendship forged on the poppy fields of France, a group of Aussie Diggers returned home to the Northern Beaches longing for a place to meet and share their stories over a cold beer, and so on 5 June 1930, Harbord Diggers was born. Harbord Diggers has been a monumental part of the Northern Beaches and Club industry ever since. We thank you for your patience whilst we have built the new Harbord Diggers. We trust that you love the new approach to an Australian tradition.

During the Great Depression, in the spirit of mateship, club profits were returned to Members and their families in distress. The club became more than just a place to meet.
50s
Originally in an old hut overlooking Freshwater Beach, the club finally settled on its headland location in the early 1950s.
60s 80s
During the 60s and 70s, stars from around the world played the auditorium to massive crowds.
00s
Things weren’t as prosperous at the Diggers, so Mounties Group amalgamated with the club in 2006 and then came a strong vision to revamp the club.
By the late 80s, the club experienced membership growth and solidified itself as one of the most successful in Australia.

By 2010, the now weathered Harbord Diggers building was reaching the end of its life and with that came a campaign to plan a new dawn for the Diggers.

Harbord Diggers lodges a Development Application (DA) for a new precinct and in August 2013, the Joint Regional Planning Panel approves the Stage 1 DA. Diggers.

Following final DA approvals and design competitions, work starts on the new Harbord Diggers and a temporary club continues to serve Members and guests.

Stage 1 of the new Harbord Diggers is complete and the club opens its doors to a new intergenerational precinct. The Diggers legacy lives on.

Born from mateship and built to improve the lives of local people, we exist to carry on a legacy. It is our duty to contribute to the community. Each time we engage with it, we must leave it richer than before.

The new Diggers will provide more than 250 local jobs, ensuring we can continue giving back to our local community as one of the largest employers in the area. Through our whole-of-life approach, we aim to encourage social engagement and inclusion amongst all members of our community, reducing the risk of social isolation.
In the spirit of our original legacy, Mounties Group currently contributes more than $1 million annually to support local community groups and the Diggers is eager to significantly increase this contribution. With a state-of-the-art fitness and aquatic precinct and a wide range of health and wellbeing services being developed, the new Harbord Diggers is prioritising health and wellbeing. Our over 55s living, Watermark Freshwater, is changing the face of retirement living in Australia, with ageing in place facilities available to help reduce aged care admissions.

ACQUAFRESCA BY PILU AcquaFresca by Pilu is a casual Italian trattoria brought to you by renowned Italian Chef, Giovanni Pilu and his team from Freshwater. This new venture will cater for all ages – locals, families and visitors to the Northern Beaches – it resembles a beachside oasis on the coast of Italy, where guests will enjoy a unique Italian experience. The restaurant will be open to the spectacular view and includes alfresco dining and an eat in bar. The menu includes all your Italian favourites, done well. Simple, tasty dishes using fresh, seasonal ingredients divided into an extensive antipasti list, pizza, pasta, secondi (mains) and dolci (desserts). Many of the dishes are sharing plates, the true Italian way to eat with family and friends. AcquaFresca by Pilu will offer a range of Italian and local wines and of course a great selection of cocktails and aperitifs. Think classic negronis and a list of spritzes, along with local and artisan beers. The food is affordable and the value of each dish rests in the simplicity and quality of the ingredients. Rolling fresh pasta on a daily basis, baking grissini and proofing pizza dough made from organic flour for 48 hours, are just a few of the key authentic elements of AcquaFresca.

The Diggers bar will offer a comprehensive range of local, domestic, international, boutique and on trend tap and packaged beverages, as well as an exciting offering of cocktails. OCEAN TERRACE The new Harbord Diggers is also home to the Ocean Terrace. A versatile playground for adults and children alike, seamlessly transitioning from indoor to outdoors. Bathed in sunshine by day and starlit by night, the Ocean Terrace offers a variety of casual seating options, surrounded by local flora and boasting beautiful views of Curl Curl Beach and the magical Northern Beaches coastline. Our award-winning teaching program has received worldwide industry acclaim and is a legacy of our founder, Forbes Carlile – a scientist, physiologist, Olympic competitor and coach – and one of the few Australians to be inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame. Over 50 Olympians have benefited from our approach, but more importantly, we have taught thousands of children to swim well, introducing them to the joys of swimming. Our state-of-the-art facility will include purpose built pools designed to the optimal depth and length to teach your child to swim well. The latest technology will deliver the cleanest warm water and air temperature and the perfect conditions for learning to swim year-round.
