Known as the “New England of the South”, Mount Dora is an anomaly in every sense of the word. Located just 30 miles northwest of Orlando and with an elevation of 184 feet above sea level, Florida’s only “Mountain top town” lives up to its official motto... “Someplace Special”. Mount Dora, nestled among nearly 1,400 small lakes, is a vibrant community that retains the authentic flavor of Old Florida. A short drive from Orlando, Mount Dora offers all the conveniences of a big city while maintaining its small-town charm and close-knit family feeling.

Local historians debate Mount Dora’s name. Legend maintains an early settler in the area, Dora Ann Drawdy, which is the reason for the city’s name. Moved by her hospitality, visiting surveyors named Lake Dora to honor their host in 1846. The town, known initially as Royellou, decided to take its name from the lake in 1883. “Mount” was added to highlight that Mount Dora resides on a plateau 184 feet above sea level, an unusual feature for land in Florida.

Starting as a popular winter retreat, Mount Dora was famous for hunters, fishermen, and boaters. The Alexandria, our first hotel, opened its doors in 1883 to serve those visitors. In a decade, the hotel changed its name to the Lake House and, finally, in 1903, to the Lakeside Inn. Listed in the National Registry of Historic Places, the hotel remains in operation. It is the oldest continually operational hotel in Florida.

Touropia Travel Experts have named Mount Dora # 1 on their list of the “Top 15 Most Charming Small Towns in Florida.” Among small American towns, Mount Dora is also one of the “10 Most Charming to Visit,” according to Travel and Leisure Magazine. Southern Living named Mount Dora one of their 50 Best Small Towns to visit in 2023.

Mount Dora has grown from its beginnings as a tiny town of under 400 people while still keeping its historic look and wondrous small-town character.

The first real growth spurt happened in the gilded era of the 1920s. Street lights, a public water system, and paved roads marked the move to modern living. Mount Dora also established its first two public parks and first community center at this time.

Walt Disney World’s 1970s arrival and population and business development explosion in nearby Orlando helped speed growth in Mount Dora. The demand for residential housing and commercial development has increased as Mount Dora continues upward.

Historically, residential property buyers have been seniors and retirees, and family buyers are now starting to obtain property in the areas around Mount Dora.

Currently, the median price for housing is around $387,943 or about $230/square-foot.

Historically, property values have increased about 15% over the last year, while the area typically has a little over 200 homes for sale at any given time.

Lake County has more than 4,300 rental units for those looking to rent rather than buy. Apartments usually rest within easy walking or driving distance to nearby schools and shopping areas.

Options range from one-bedroom units to luxury apartments or condominiums available for rent. Besides the number of bedrooms and bathrooms, amenities a prospective renter may want to check into include: garage parking, on-premises laundry facilities, community swimming pool, storage space, fitness center, residents lounge or activity center and whether or not the building is pet friendly.

Mount Dora gives you endless opportunities to experience authentic Florida. Take a walk through our historic downtown, a boat trip on one of our many lakes, or a bike ride in the surrounding area and see for yourself. You can play pickleball, tennis and many other activities in Mount Dora’s parks.

Mount Dora is a haven for water activities. We’re home to over 310 miles of navigable waterways, perfect for boating, kayaking, canoeing, or sitting peacefully by the shore. Boat and adventure tours are available on Lake Dora and the Harris Chain of Lakes. We recommend you visit the Dora Canal, described as “the most beautiful mile of water in the world.”

If fishing is your passion, you should know that the Harris Chain of Lakes is known as the Bass Capital of the World. The area is a magnet for pro and amateur anglers, with many tournaments held in our area throughout the year.

For biking enthusiasts, we offer the Mount Dora Mountain Bike Trail . Built and maintained by the Ocala Mountain Bike Association, this challenging 4-mile course offers sharp turns and fast drops. The intermediate-rated track offers speed and sudden switchbacks. The trail is shaded for most of the journey, with breathtaking trees and natural foliage to enhance your ride. 

Dozens of state parks and recreational areas encompassing Lake and nearby Orange Counties surround Mount Dora. They are all open for public use and exploration.

Closer to home, Downtown Mount Dora has an array of parks and recreational areas for young and old alike.

Gilbert Park , located at Tremain and Liberty, has recently undergone a renovation, adding two new pavilions and new landscaping, as well as an expanded Wood Wonderland playground for the young ones.

Annie Donnelly Park , is located right in the heart of downtown Mount Dora. This park also features tennis and pickleball courts.

Grantham Point Park , adjacent to Gilbert Park, is often referred to as Lighthouse Park because of its 35-foot lighthouse that helps boaters navigate Lake Dora after dark. The lighthouse, by the way, is the only inland freshwater lighthouse in the state.

If you’re a real nature lover, a visit to Palm Island Park at the end of Tremain Street is in order. The park is an 8-acre nature preserve ideal for birdwatching and outdoor hikes along multiple trails. The park includes a fishing pier, picnic shelters, and a mile long boardwalk. If you’re lucky, you might see a few alligators and otters swimming in their natural habitat while ospreys, eagles and herons fly above.

Mount Dora has long had an outstanding reputation as a a community which embraces the arts. Our city is home to a diverse collection of art galleries, studios, theaters, museums, and other cultural centers dedicated to artistic expression and creative freedom.

Initially founded by a group of volunteers dedicated to supporting fine art, the Mount Dora Center for the Arts (MDCA) has grown into a multifaceted community center with gallery exhibitions and art education programs for all ages and levels. Located on E. 5th Avenue, the Center for the Arts holds monthly Art Strolls and art auctions. MDCA leads the organization of the Annual Mount Dora Arts Festival, one of the top art events in Florida.

Mount Dora is also home to multiple art galleries and studios for those looking to add to their personal collection or to browse and enjoy the art.

One of the oldest continuously operating theaters in the state, the Sonnetag Theater at the Icehouse has been delighting audiences since 1949. Newly renovated facility on North Unser Street, providing a year-round slate of musicals, comedies, and dramatic plays to patrons from all over Central Florida.

Without doubt, one of the most unique museums anywhere, the Modernism Museum Mount Dora on E. 4th Avenue is also one of the city’s newest attractions. Founded in 2013 and dedicated to displaying examples of the modernism movement that fuses sculpture with furniture making to create one-of-a-kind pieces as fascinating as they are functional.

Suppose you’re interested in the area’s history. In that case, the Mount Dora Historical Museum is located near Donnelly Park in what was once the city’s first fire station and city jail. Maintained by the Mount Dora Historical Society, the museum focuses on the significant people and events in Mount Dora from 1880 to 1930.

Any golfer worth their salt knows that Florida has more golf courses than any other state, over 1,100 of them.

Mount Dora has more than our fair share of well-kept greens and rolling fairways. In fact, in and around the Central Florida area, you’ll find more than 50 courses, many of which have been designed and played on by the biggest names in the sport.

While most clubs are open to the public, some are private and a few may have private events on their course any given day, so it’s best to check with the course you have in mind before finalizing plans for your golf outing.

Once a haven for retirees, Mount Dora has seen its population take on greater diversity. The rapid growth of the Central Florida region, in general, has attracted a wide variety of newcomers to our area.

Mount Dora’s population was only 623 people in 1920. A decade later, it had actually declined to just 612 in 1927. It’s estimated that more than 16,000 people call Mount Dora home. The median age continues to grow younger as the area gains more families with children as well as young professionals who move here for a less crowded, more leisurely pace of life.

According to the most recent census, there are 6,908 households of which 20.1% had children under the age of 18. Just under half (47.6%) of our homes are occupied by married couples, while 6.0% were single parent households. The average household size was 2.25 people and the average family size was 2.79.

Mount Dora attracts new residents and visitors of the four-legged variety too! Take a stroll downtown or visit any of our pet-friendly parks, and you’ll discover this for yourself.

As such, we have many places to stay as well as lots of local businesses that are pet-friendly. According to a recent survey, you can find more than 75 Hotels/Motels in the area that will welcome your fur babies. There are also vacation cottages and home rentals where pets can bring their humans. As always, make sure you inquire about whether or not pets are welcome and what extra charges you may incur when you’re making your lodging reservations.

Most, but not all, of our downtown businesses allow pets. But all that do require your pet to be on a leash and under control. Some require you to hold your pet in your arms. Businesses may not always have a sign posted indicating they are petfriendly, so make sure you ask before taking your pet inside.

Most of our restaurants with outdoor seating also allow pets. But again, ask first. A stone’s throw from our historic downtown area is an off-leash dog park just behind the Ice House Theater at the corner of Unser Street and 11th Avenue.

While a few merchants may have water available for your pet, it is always recommended that you carry ample water with you when walking with your best friend, particularly during the warm summer months.

Also, make sure you bring doggie bags with you so you can clean up after your pet.

While Mount Dora is very pet-friendly, you should be aware that during outdoor events requiring street closures, such as our annual Art Festivals, pets are not allowed in the closed event area by law.

As a vibrant, growing community, Mount Dora is home to many top-tier educational facilities. You’ll find everything from Pre-K through advanced academic degrees available in our area.

These schools are distributed between 4 public district schools, 1 charter school, and 21 private schools, which offers area students a wide variety of choices in pursuing their education.

Beyond high school, there are 58 colleges within 100 miles of Mount Dora, the closest being Lake Sumter State College, just 10 miles from the center of town. There are many other schools, both public and private, that offer 2- and 4-year degree programs. Many of these institutions also offer postgraduate degrees.

Of particular interest is Beacon College, a private 4-year college located in historic downtown Leesburg that caters to students with learning disabilities, such as dyslexia and ADHD.

It was founded in 1989 by a group of parents trying to provide education to their kids who struggled because of learning disabilities.

Healthcare is a vital component of any community. Residents and visitors will find multiple healthcare facilities in and around the city, including hospitals, clinics, nursing homes, and assisted living centers, as well as medical practitioners and specialists in private practice.

AdventHealth: A 269-bed facility and 24-hour emergency room located in Tavares. It is the closest facility to Mount Dora. It features a newly designed ER, nationally accredited chest pain care, and pediatric services at their Center for Women and Children.

Mount Dora also hosts great senior care options such as Waterman Village. Waterman Village is a retirement community that offers indepedent living, assisted living, nursing and rehabilitation, and memory support residences. Another great option for memory care is CERTUS Premier Memory Care Living Community here in Mount Dora. They offer short-term respite care on top of state of the art memory care and Adult Day Care.
