Greetings From the Principal
Dear Friends of Mount de Sales Academy,
“The greatest mistake we can make as Christians is, in the words of Saint Augustine, ‘to presume that the grace of Christ consists in His example and not in the gift of His person.’” These words from Pope Leo XIV reflect both the mission at Mount de Sales Academy and being a Christian in 2025. What a wonderful year it has been striving for this. In relationships, we share faith and charity, grow in identity, and participate in God’s life.
Since 2012, we have thoughtfully implemented our 1:1 technology program to support our mission. As a Microsoft Showcase School for ten years, we have embraced innovation while also recognizing technology’s impact on our young people. We continue to reflect on how to address this as a school and as a culture. To that end, our Parent Technology Group met several times this year. Their main takeaway: unplugging regularly is important but so is fostering real connections at home through projects together, time in the car, or simply being present. Even in silence, the gift of self speaks volumes if one is present.
We see this through Mercy Night, where students gather for Eucharistic Adoration followed by fellowship on our piazza. Our students grow academically and spiritually when they are in community. Let us continue to accept the challenge to engage with each other. Pope Leo reminds us that it is not just turning off technology, though self-discipline is essential. The ultimate answer is in relationships! Christ gave Himself: through His Incarnation, Passion, Death, and Resurrection, and through the sacraments, particularly the Holy Eucharist.
Every day offers countless opportunities to give ourselves to others. As Pope Leo also said, “Faith is transmitted in the family together with life, from generation to generation. It is shared like food on the table and the heart’s affections. This makes it a privileged place to encounter Jesus, who loves us and always wants what is good for us.”
Please know that you and your family are always in my prayers.
Sincerely in Christ,
Sister Mary Raymond, O.P. Principal
Sister Mary Raymond, O.P. and Mount de Sales students joined the Catonsville 4th of July Parade this summer!
Faith is above all a response to a gaze of love.
—POPE LEO XIV

Growth as a Sailor with Sylvia
Randle ’25
1. Considering the many roles you have held — Maryland Page Program participant, Mock Trial Captain, Sailor Scoop Editor, how have these experiences pushed you outside your comfort zone and helped you grow?
Throughout my time at Mount de Sales, I have grown confident by admitting when I need help and seeking out the guidance of my teachers and mentors. As a freshman entering a rigorous academic environment from a public middle school, I turned to my Honors Western Civilization teacher at the time, Ms. O’Friel, who taught me how to study and prepare for assessments in her classes and all my other classes. As a senior mock trial captain, I felt empowered to give my opening statement only after practicing repeatedly during lunch and receiving feedback from Mock Trial Moderator Ms. Bourassa. Understanding when to seek help formed my maturity as a Sailor, giving me the courage to speak up and pose questions.
2. Confidence develops over time. Was there a specific moment at MDSA when you truly felt you stepped into your own?
A few months into my freshman year, Religion Teacher Mrs. Harper asked me to stay behind to guard the Blessed Sacrament between classes on an Adoration Day before the next religion class entered the chapel. As a young student relatively new to the practice of Adoration, this simple offering of trust from a teacher I continue to admire helped me understand my worth as a Mount de Sales student and as a child of God. This experience jumpstarted my interest in participating in campus ministry as a lector as I began to understand the beauty and impact of group worship.
3. Mock Trial involves quick thinking, public speaking, and leadership. Did you have to overcome self-doubt and learn to lead confidently?
I participated in Mock Trial as a witness for my first two years, which I loved, but I still always wanted to try out as a lawyer. Witnessing stellar upperclassmen, who were great role models, give lengthy speeches scared me. Ultimately, I saw the great benefit of leaping outside of my comfort zone, especially as I seriously considered a career in law! I overcame my fear of serving as a lawyer by editing and repeatedly practicing my opening statement until I could recite it without notes and with my head held high. When I gave my opening statement at playoffs, I thought of all the people who had shaped my mock trial journey—hardworking and energetic Mount de Sales graduates who have gone before me, Ms. Bourassa, and fellow club members and friends who gave me constant encouragement and motivation. When I received full marks in the first round of playoffs, I felt overjoyed by my journey to Mock Trial lawyer, which would not have been possible without the encouragement of my community and a leap of faith.
4. What’s one piece of advice you would give to a younger student struggling with self-confidence?
I would tell a younger student to give herself the grace to explore by pursuing the numerous opportunities at Mount de Sales. To grow in confidence, she first must understand who she is, how she wants to spend her time, and the people with whom she wants to surround herself. Additionally, seeking active prayer time, whether that is through participation in monthly Mass, praise and worship, or spiritual reading with a group, leads to a greater discovery of her talents and gifts. In finding what motivates her and the community that empowers her, she can grow to understand her role as a unique child of God, a process of self-discovery that will continue to unfold well beyond graduating and walking through the windows.
Excellence in Mock Trial
In Mock Trial, students work collaboratively in the roles of attorneys and witnesses in order to argue an official case against another school’s team. The case alternates between civil and criminal cases and gives students the opportunity to learn about current social and legal issues, practice public speaking, and develop critical thinking skills.
Mock Trial demands a time commitment comparable to that of a sport, and the students’ dedication and exceptional work ethic have led to winning records and first-round byes in the Circuit 3 Tournament in two of the past three seasons. In 2023, the team advanced to the Circuit Quarterfinals.
Students collaborate to develop direct and cross examinations, rehearsing them extensively throughout the season. They continuously refine their performance based on feedback from teacher coaches, attorney coaches, and scorers after each match.
The team competes in person at the Baltimore County Circuit Court in Towson, MD, where matches are judged and scored by sitting Circuit Court judges and practicing attorneys. These legal professionals also provide valuable feedback, helping students deepen their understanding of the law and develop professional courtroom speaking skills.
Students have to master a tremendous amount of information provided each year in the case’s fact pattern. In past years, students have had to parse through cell phone tower location data, sequences of fictitious social media posts, and fictitious physical therapy records while understanding the nuances around legal concepts such as the First Amendment, probable cause, and liability.

LESSONS FROM OUR SENIOR RETREAT Living Fully in God's Grace:
Mary Beth Zaleski ’25
I had been looking forward to Senior Retreat since freshman year. A sleepover with all 124 of my classmates? Count me in! I had high hopes for this retreat. It often takes time for people to open up to each other and the Lord, and that proved true for the Class of 2025. I remember talking to Campus Minister Ms. Bolesta about how badly I wanted my class to be open to the joy and happiness that comes from having a relationship with Him and to bridge the gaps that divided our grade.
and played games. We were ready to be “Fully Alive.” People I had not seen interact in years were hugging and crying together. Friendships were made, strengthened, and mended.
"The glory of God is man fully alive."
-St Irenaeus
At retreat, my hopes were fulfilled. Something shifted the second we stepped off the buses. Friend groups blended, people laughed, took pictures,
This retreat set the trajectory of our senior year. Looking back, I wish we had appreciated each other sooner, but I’ve come to see that God was quietly weaving and writing every moment of our journey. I’m forever grateful for those three days.
Without Senior Retreat, I believe our class would have walked into graduation as very different people. Now, we leave knowing that no matter where we go, Mount de Sales is our forever home.
Gianna Romano ’25
With our bags packed, buses loaded, and snacks galore, we were excited to head off to Camp Wabanna for Senior Retreat, the retreat we had anticipated since freshman year! Although we didn’t know what to expect, there was such distinct joy in the air. I was unaware how deeply the next three days would impact both me and the Class of 2025.
Being at Camp Wabanna, removed from everyday distractions, gave us space to grow as a class. Through laughs, tears, and powerful moments we bonded more than ever before. Our retreat theme, “Fully Alive,” became a lived experience as we opened our hearts to one another and to God.
One of the most impactful moments for me was during Adoration. After receiving personal benediction, surrounded by classmates and Christ’s presence, I felt overwhelmed by gratitude. I realized how blessed I am to be part of a school so full of love—from the sisters, teachers, and each other. I knew I must make the most of my final year by deepening relationships with my classmates.
We left Camp Wabanna not as individuals but as sisters. Since returning, we saw one another as a true family, more connected through our faith, love, and shared experiences. I realized I needed to take full advantage of everything MDSA has to offer, especially in my final year.
Senior Retreat changed my life. It deepened my friendships, strengthened my relationship with Christ, and created memories I’ll cherish forever.
VARSITY LACROSSE WINS
HISTORIC IAAM CHAMPIONSHIP!
On May 10, 2025, the Sailors arrived at the USA Lacrosse Tierney Field determined to redeem the only conference loss they had against Mercy. The lacrosse program had not been in a championship since 1994, and after finishing the 2024 season last place in the IAAM A division, Mount de Sales was moved to the B Division. Led by eight seniors with a season goal to win the championship, this team was fully prepared and ready to leave it all on the field. It couldn’t have been a more perfect night with a packed stadium, students chanting, and the Dominican Sisters cheering us on! The Sailors led 8-3 at half time and clinched the championship win over Mercy with a final score of 15-8. The team proved they were unstoppable: Grace Herman had 4 goals and 2 assists; Mackenzie Conley and Ella Powers scored 3 goals each; Mallie Mundorf made 2 goals; Sophia Cunningham, Maddie Sabatelli, and Paige Smith each scored 1 goal, and Marissa Fink rounded out the win with 1 assist! Defense never backed down, led by senior captain Caroline Spears and Mary Beth Zaleski in the goal. Every player contributed to make sure this would be the team to put a championship banner on the wall!
The Sailors finished the IAAM season 7-1, with a tough schedule playing three nationally ranked teams, Spalding, Manchester Valley, and Saint Stephens, as well as St. Agnes, Notre Dame Prep, Severn, and Severna Park. The team's grit and determination to always improve earned them a trophy and a night of memories that they will hold dear in their hearts forever. Let it be known that before every game the girls pray, “For Your glory, God, not mine.” What a beautiful testimony to His glory to hang a Championship Banner in 2025!

A Midsummer Night’s Dream
For the first time in over 20 years, the Mount de Sales Performing Arts Department took on Shakespeare this spring, presenting A Midsummer Night’s Dream! Directed by MDSA Drama Teacher Mrs. Marian Newell P ’26, the students truly rose to the occasion, tackling the original script and pulling the audience into the enchanted Athenian Forest.
Outstanding performances were given by the four lovers, played by Reagan Woody ’26, June Newell ’26, Rowan Layman MSJ ’27, and Nate Thompson MSJ ’28 as they journeyed through the forest. Nat Johnson ’26 truly stole the show as the impish Puck, skipping about creating chaos with her magical flowers. The mechanicals provided fabulous comic relief, with the hilarious Megan McCaffrey ’26 as Bottom and Rebecca Knapp ’25 as bossy director Peter Quince.
Mrs. Newell’s incredible set and costume design by Anna Kaise ’25 wowed the audience and provided the perfect atmosphere, all executed by the crew under the very best stage managers, Colleen Butler ’25 and Jo Hill ’25. The Performing Arts Department was so excited to create a live performance experience of this classic play, which is currently part of the English curriculum for sophomores at Mount de Sales. The amazing support of the entire community allowed the girls to thrive and share their God-given talents with all!

Fromm
1. What do you love about teaching at Mount de Sales Academy?
The students at Mount de Sales are incredible – they inspire me every day with their thoughtful insight, generous kindness, and joyful participation. It is so delightful to see them develop their critical thinking, reading, and writing skills.
2. As a teacher, what qualities do you believe define a Sailor?
First, Mount de Sales Sailors learn grit and time management throughout their four years here. As they grow and mature in confidence, Sailors also learn to take academic risks, deepening their knowledge of content in their classes. But most importantly, they learn what faith means to them as grace-filled young women.
3. If you could share any piece of wisdom with your students, what would it be? Have an attitude of gratitude – it will illuminate the beauty, grace, possibilities, and fulfillment present in your life.
4. How do you build and maintain connections with students?
My students know that I love the literature I teach – I try to share how and why our curricular texts have inspired me (and others) throughout time. I encourage a classroom environment characterized by honesty, enthusiasm, and humor as we discuss and navigate the powerful questions and issues presented in our books.
5. What is something that students might be surprised to learn about you?
I spent a semester abroad in Rome during my junior year of college. Not only did I see countless incredible works of Western civilization and culture, but I also learned so much about how to travel on my own. It was an amazing experience!

VALEDICTORIAN
"We know the value of our Mount de Sales education, and we know how important it is to love God and to love others. Our diplomas have been given to us as evidence of all the lessons we have learned and of how much we have grown. But there is one more lesson we need, and it is one we have been learning throughout senior year… That is how to let go and change, as bittersweet as it may be. But I hope, as summer returns and we become freshmen once again, we treasure the foundation and wisdom that Mount de Sales has provided and use it to bring faith, hope, and love to those around us."
Marie Smith
SALUTATORIAN
"If we one day forget the Pythagorean theorem or the ending of Dorian Gray , my hope is that we always remember the truth Mount de Sales has written on our hearts: we are beloved daughters of the Father. Beyond our successes, beyond our relationships, beyond our dreams, we were created to love and be loved. When it seems like we have nothing left to hold onto, that truth will hold us. We will always know who we are. And that changes everything."
Adriana Deras
MOUNT DE SALES GIRL
"Faith is the heart of Mount de Sales…These past four years have been all about trying new experiences, discovering passions, and preparing us for life outside of these walls. It worked! We have confidence in our ability to choose the good because we have had practice at Mount de Sales. The faith we have built allows us to lean on the Lord during the trials of life, which is essential because by turning to Him, we receive His love. This makes us, once again, fully alive."

20 Things We’ll Miss
What makes student life at Mount de Sales Academy unforgettable? For the Class of 2025, it’s not just classes, uniforms, or hanging out in the piazza—it’s the sisterhood, the traditions, and growing up together in a faith-filled, fun community.
At our all-girls Catholic school, friendships spark in the most unexpected places—working on projects in the library, cheering at games, or cracking up during Spirit Day. Students don’t just share a campus— they share life.
To celebrate the Class of 2025, we asked seniors and alumnae to share what they love—and what they’ll miss—most about being a Sailor. The result? A joyful, heartfelt collection of the top 20 things that define the Mount de Sales experience.

A Morning of Gratitude
SCHOLARSHIP BENEFACTOR BREAKFAST
The theological virtues of charity and hope were abundant on February 28, as we celebrated the annual Scholarship Benefactor Breakfast, bringing together scholarship benefactors and recipients. This celebration of charity is an annual opportunity for our students and school to express appreciation and love for the generosity of our scholarship benefactors, who give us great hope.
Guests heard from longtime donors and past parents, Maureen and Jerry Gallagher P’05 ’09, who promote the dignity of life and a commitment to the unborn through the Guardians of Life Scholarship. A recipient of the Guardians of Life, Semper Fi, and St. Jane Frances de Chantel scholarships, Olivia Rydl ’27, expressed appreciation on behalf of all students:
I want to express my deepest gratitude and appreciation to all the benefactors. The fact that your generosity fuels our high school experience is truly a gift. Our school helps us grow not only in knowledge, but also in hope. It prepares us for a world outside of high school and instills the love of God into our hearts. The generosity bestowed onto us will forever change our lives and help us grow into the best version of ourselves.
Jillian Rydl P’27 delivered a poignant address to the students: Take these gifts and cherish them. Use them to promote more virtue in this world. You are being blessed with the means to grow and learn, and you are called by God Himself to lead with ambition, to be respectful, to cultivate ideas, to teach and lead by example, to create opportunities to bless others, and to leave this world a better place.
We are incredibly grateful for all of our scholarship benefactors. You enable us to fulfill our missions at Mount de Sales Academy.

SERVING OUR SAILORS
RICK & NANCY FOSTER
Did you know that Mount de Sales girls have special godparents? Rick and Nancy were introduced to Mount de Sales through their neighbors, the Finley family, and have been supporting our school ever since!
Rick and Nancy’s neighbor, Colleen Finley, Class of 2013, was a standout volleyball player and starred in the musicals throughout her years at MDSA. Rick and Nancy attended each of her games and musicals. Since many of the volleyball players also played basketball, the Fosters started attending basketball games as well. Rick, an avid photographer, takes live action photos of many athletic events and shares these photos with the girls’ parents. Nancy brings snacks to all of the games and helps with meals during Tech Week for the school plays. The Fosters continue to share their photos, snacks, and most importantly, their support for the past 15 years!
Nancy says, “There’s just something very special about Mount de Sales. The girls support each other and cheer for each other. You don’t see that with athletes from other schools. We also love Coach Trish and Coach Mike and how much they put into the school. The Dominican Sisters are so special. The girls love them, and when they graduate, they want to come back to see the Sisters and connect with them.”
What a gift Mount de Sales has in Rick and Nancy Foster!

6th Annual Day of Giving Sails to Success!
The 6th annual Day of Giving for Mount de Sales Academy exceeded all expectations and sailed well beyond our fundraising goal of $225,000 with $271,337 contributed by the Mount de Sales Academy community!
The all-day campaign was not only a fundraiser, but also a celebration of our community and culture. We launched with Mass offered for our benefactors. Momentum surged with matching gift opportunities. We gathered in-person and online to pray a rosary for benefactors’ intentions then had a Party on the Piazza. We were thrilled to welcome back alumnae, parents, grandparents, friends, and current students for fun and fellowship.
Day of Giving is a celebration of generosity, with gifts that immediately impact our students and the school community. Many thanks to the students who kicked things off through the Your Participation Matters (YPM) giving campaign, to everyone who gave early and helped build momentum, and to all who contributed to the tremendous outpouring of support on May 9.
Thank you, MDSA community, for the tangible demonstration of your love for our students and school!

Class of 1975 50-Year Reunion
Members of the Class of 1975 were our honored guests at the 173rd Commencement.
As these alumnae gathered in the library to reminisce, laughter and tears filled the room as they picked up right where they left off fifty years ago.
During the ceremony as the school song resonated through the Music Hall, these Sailor Sisters felt as if it was just like yesterday when they too walked through the windows.

Spotlight Alumnae
Mount de Sales was more than just the school I graduated from in 2004, it was the foundation upon which I began building the person I would become. It’s where I discovered the courage to lead, the humility to collaborate, and the confidence to believe I could create something meaningful in the world.
Among the friendships and lessons I gained during those formative years, one stands out for its lasting impact: my connection with my classmate and best friend, Emilie Menefee Vichich ’04. Early on at MDSA, Emilie and I worked together to restart the field hockey program, which had been dormant for several years. Our shared determination led to the revival of a sport we both loved, and we were honored to serve as co-captains of the team. That spirit of collaboration and leadership carried over beyond graduation. Emilie and I continued working together on numerous professional projects in the world of government contracting, always pushing each other to think critically and lead with purpose. The foundation laid at MDSA, and the powerful relationships it fostered, gave me the confidence to launch K&G Enterprises, a company dedicated to guiding businesses through the complex government contracting process. Emilie introduced me to the person from whom I would purchase the company in 2014—a pivotal moment in my journey.

"I can do things you cannot, you can do things I cannot; together we can do great things."
—SAINT TERESA OF CALCUTTA
More than a decade later, K&G has helped over 500 companies win government contracts. Just as important is our commitment to service— supporting small businesses, mentoring entrepreneurs, and providing expert guidance through every stage of the government contracting process. Beyond my work with K&G, I serve on the board of Hope Connections, which supports individuals affected by cancer, as well as on the board of Mobilize Frederick and the City of Frederick Sustainability Committee. My husband Adam and I also cofounded the Frederick Makerspace, a nonprofit dedicated to empowering young people through hands-on access to science, technology, and creative tools that foster innovation, confidence, and career exploration. At K&G, I encourage our entire team to engage in their own efforts to give back—whether through community service, mentorship, or advocacy.
Inspired by Mother Teresa's example of unity and service, I find these words capture the nature of our friendship and the many relationships that have changed my life: We all bring different strengths, and when united by purpose, we can accomplish far more than we ever could alone.
To current students and fellow alumnae: never underestimate the power of the values and connections you form here. They may one day lead you to build something meaningful and do great things, together.

High School On The Horizon What Middle School Families Should Consider
While high school may still feel far away for middle school families, the process of discovery and decisionmaking often begins much earlier than expected. Choosing a high school is an important decision, but it doesn’t have to be a stressful one. Thoughtful preparation can lead to a more confident, informed high school decision when the time comes.
