Reverend Marvin L. Gilliam, Jr. Pastor, The Mount Carmel Baptist Church Pastor Marvin L. Gilliam, Jr. is a native of Chesterfield County, Virginia. He was licensed as a minister in 2003 at Union Branch Baptist Church in Chesterfield and ordained in 2014 at Sixth Mount Zion Baptist Church in Richmond, Virginia. His ministry related experiences range from fine arts ministry to youth and young adult ministry, serving several churches in the central Virginia region. He served as the pastor of the Mount Oni Baptist Church in Ruther Glen, Virginia for over three years. In 2019, Pastor Gilliam began serving in his current assignment as pastor of The Mount Carmel Baptist Church in the Church Hill area of Richmond, Virginia. After completing his education in Chesterfield County Public Schools, Rev. Gilliam continued his education and earned degrees from Virginia State University (Bachelor of Arts, Vocal Music) and the Samuel Dewitt Proctor School of Theology at Virginia Union University (Master of Divinity). He served as a vocal music educator at George Wythe High School in Richmond, Virginia for 12 years. Additionally, he serves on the General Board of the Baptist General Convention of Virginia. Pastor Gilliam is happily married to Jennifer Gilliam; they currently reside in Henrico, Virginia. They are the proud parents of three children, Marvin, III, Jameson, and Leila. Through his life, Pastor Gilliam seeks to serve as a living epistle of God’s grace, mercy, and favor. His guiding scripture, Romans 8:28, states “All things work together for the good of those who love the Lord and are called according to His purpose.” With a goal of empowering all he encounters, he desires to be all that the Lord has called him to be, using his gifts and experiences to show a dark world the light and love of Jesus Christ.

THE MOUNT CARMEL BAPTIST CHURCH Church History in Brief – 1887-2019 In the early 1880’s a large group was baptized into the membership of the Ebenezer Baptist Church. Among those baptized were Mr. William Henry White and his wife, Mrs. Kate Garnett White. Shortly after his baptism, Mr. White was appointed to lead the prayer service of the church. Several from this group proved to be faithful helpers in the organization of The Mount Carmel Baptist Church. Mr. White, having felt the urge of greater service to God and man, launched forth on a venture, which widened his sphere of influence. On Burying Ground Hill, in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Shackelford, Mr. White started an afternoon Mission Sunday School. This Sunday School grew fast and the work accomplished in it soon won the respect of the public to the extent that as weeks passed, larger quarters were sought and the organization of a church contemplated. A council from the Baptist Churches of Richmond was called in October 1887 with Rev. Wells, the Pastor of Ebenezer Baptist Church serving as chairman, and the church was organized with Rev. White, having been licensed to preach and Rev. Wells naming the church. The Sunday School raised money for the purchase of two lots on which the first building was erected. On February 26, 1888, Ebenezer Baptist Church called a council and Rev. White was ordained. The first Sunday in October 1888 was a great day at The Mount Carmel Baptist Church with its first baptism reported to be one of the most picturesque religious ceremonies ever to be held in Richmond. In December 1889, through adversity and struggle, a new building was dedicated to God at Saint James and Fritz Streets with appropriate services. Financial aid was received from the Mother and Sister Churches. A few more years of progress and inspiration and this building became inadequate to accommodate the congregation, so the lot at 1303 North First Street was purchased and in 1904 a new building was erected. On August 19, 1913 after a pastorate of twenty-six years, the Founder and first Pastor died on his sixtieth birthday. In June 1958, we moved to 3200 East Broad Street under the leadership of Dr. E. D. McCreary, Jr. The Church has been blessed with God fearing and inspiring Pastors to lead us in our walk with God and they are: Rev. William H. White Rev. Edward D. Caffee, Sr. Rev. Berryman H. Johnson Rev. Frederick W. Black, Sr. Rev. John L. Wood Rev. Dr. Thomas F. Freeman Rev. Rosamond C. Kay, Jr. Rev. Dr. Edward D. McCreary, Jr. Rev. Dr. John S. Fountaine Rev. Dr. William E. To God be the Glory for all the marvelous things He has done for The Mount Carmel Baptist Church.

Benediction

Reverend Dr. Marcus N. Leggett

Rev. Dr. Marcus Leggett’s life is dedicated to living by example and encouraging men, women and children to live up to their full potential in Christ. He is the Pastor of Mount Pleasant Baptist Church, Chester, Virginia and Shiloh Baptist Church, Chesterfield Virginia. He has more than a decade of teaching and counseling, which enables him to reach others with humor, warmth, transparency and strength.

Rev. Dr. Marcus Leggett was born in Statesville, North Carolina. He is the son of Milton and Vanessa Mitchell who currently reside in Fayetteville, North Carolina and is the brother to one sister, Ajaya Mitchell. He is the husband, of twenty-one years, to the beautiful Mrs. Nicole Leggett (formerly Nicole Gilliam) and shares the joys of parenting three lovely children; Myles, Jada and Joshua Leggett. The family of five currently reside in Chesterfield, Virginia. Dr. Leggett is a 1991 graduate of Thomas Dale High School and continued his education at Elizabeth City State University where he obtained his Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology in 1997. It was also in 1997 that Dr. Leggett received the gift of salvation and was baptized at Union Branch Baptist Church. He was called to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ in December of 2001. In 2004, Dr. Leggett graduated with his Masters of Divinity from the Samuel Proctor School of Theology at Virginia Union University. On June 18, 2005 he was ordained as assistant to the pastor at Union Branch Baptist Church. On March 8, 2009, Dr. Leggett was installed as Pastor of Shiloh Baptist Church, Chesterfield Virginia. In November 2010, while pastoring at Shiloh, Dr. Leggett was called on and accepted the task of spiritual counsel to Mount Pleasant Evangelistic Church when they found themselves without a pastor. He assisted by preaching two Sunday’s a month. One year later in November, 2011, Dr. Leggett recognized God’s urging that he expand his territory and to the delight of the saints of MPBC, acceded to that urge and became the Pastor of Mount Pleasant. Dr. Leggett has always put the people at the forefront of his endeavors. It was with that thought and desire to better serve all those that he ministers to, that he pursued his Doctor of Ministry. In May 2018, he successfully earned his Doctor of Ministry from Virginia University of Lynchburg. Dr. Leggett likens himself to the Apostle Paul when he says in Romans 8:38-39 “For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord”.
