Experience nature

You don’t have to set foot far out of the towns to experience the bounty and variety of the natural world. There are thousands of kilometres of walking and biking tracks across forests and creeks, through bush and farmlands, all linking the towns of the goldfields.

The area is rich in natural beauty, from wildflower season in the spring, to enjoying the shade on a hot summer day at Vaughan Springs, to the changing of the leaves in autumn at Castlemaine’s historic Botanical Gardens, to a brisk walk up Mount Alexander (Leanganook) during the bright sunny days and cool mornings of winter.

All year round you can mountainbike on worldclass facilities with around 34kms of single track trails on the north-western slopes of Mount Alexander.

If walking is more your speed, the Castlemaine to Maldon Walking and Cycling trail - 17kms of track running alongside the historic goldfields steam railway - is a great opportunity to get your steps up and spot native birds and animals, such as kangaroos and wallabies.

Pack a picnic to enjoy in the enchanted Oak Forest at Harcourt, along the banks of Cairn Curran Reservoir, by the popular Expedition Pass Reservoir or cool down with a dip in the rock pools at Metcalfe Cascades.

Walking and Cycling

1 Goldfields Track: a 210km journey that links Bendigo to Ballarat, while passing through the charming townships of Creswick, Daylesford and Castlemaine. The track winds through Victoria’s gold rush landscapes, with interpretive signs sharing Indigenous stories, language and art.

From Djaara stories and teachings, to the relics of a gold rush past, Castlemaine, Maldon and Surrounds has a rich and complex history for you to explore.

During the gold rush, our towns were some of the richest in the world. The evidence of the 1850s gold frenzy is everywhere - from the generous, wide streetscapes filled with heritage shopfronts in Maldon, to old heritage buildings and homesteads like the beautiful Buda Castlemaine.

Visit preserved mining sites, where the treasures and toils of the gold diggings past can still be seen today. On your journey take the time to learn about Djarra culture and understand the impact that the gold rush had on one of the world’s oldest continuous living cultures.
