News that’s Fresh! By Caitlin Karrenberg, Master of Meat

Here we are in the throes of grilling season looking for some new and exciting options for outdoor cooking. We’re continuing to grow our Fresh and Frozen Meat departments and are happy to offer some assistance at the helm of your grill. In our Fresh Meat Department we’re continuing to offer local, grass-feed beef from Sweetgrass Beef Cooperative. Sweetgrass is a cooperative of beef ranchers located throughout northern New Mexico and Southern Colorado that pool their resources together to offer a sustainable and consistent product to their customers. We order from them weekly, and they cut and process the beef to order, ensuring the best and freshest product you can get. The skirt, flank, and tenderloin steaks are popular. The ground beef is a 85/15, perfect for juicy burgers. We also get chuck roasts, sirloins, ribeyes, and briskets. The ribeye steak is a perfect summer evening griller. We also carry Kyzer Farms pork. Kyzer Farms is located in Albuquerque, NM and is dedicated to raising heritage breed hogs fed local grains and vegetables, and they are never administered hormones or antibiotics. We offer their fresh bone-in pork chops and their butt roast. We also offer several of their frozen ground pork products: green chile pork sausage, chorizo, breakfast sausage, and straight-up ground pork. Check out our Local Meats section in the freezer case. You’ll also find local beef from Maynard’s, J-Six, and Gila River Ranch there. If you’re looking for something a little more off the beaten path, we have a great selection of local meats that you won’t find anywhere else: Goat and lamb from Tierra del Sol located in El Paso, TX, as well as bison and elk from Grande Natural located in Del Norte, CO. We also have Certified Organic chicken livers, an assortment of Free-Range chicken cuts, and Free-Range duck breast. Check out our website for grilling tips and recipes!

Down on the Farm

By Nicole Fuchs, Farmer Extraordinaire Pests and Weeds – We Got Em’! Most people realize that eating organic fruits, vegetables, and dairy means that they are consuming food that is void of chemical fertilizers and pesticides. MVM Farm uses organic growing practices to provide the healthiest fruits and vegetables for our customers. Growing organic takes on a whole other meaning on the farm though – it means we have lots of bugs and weeds to contend with.

“I found a lady bug in my lettuce.” Yep, we’ve heard this a time or two. Believe it or not, all the spiders, mosquitoes, and moths are a good sign, and the lady bugs and dragonflies are an even better sign. These bugs are beneficial to the farm: lady bugs eat aphids which can be very invasive, and dragonflies eat mosquitoes. We try to attract these beneficial insects by planting colorful flowers – like zinnias and sunflowers. What do we do about the bugs that aren’t so beneficial? Sometimes we pull the infected plants, use insecticidal soap, and on occasion, leave the infected crop to see if the bugs just stay put. Our crops are also rotated to decrease bug populations. Recently, we have also heard, “Wow, the farm looks great, everything is really growing, you have a lot of weeds!” When our produce is growing great so are our weeds! We’ve been asked how we control our weeds, especially the Bermuda grass (it’s quite pervasive and pulling doesn’t always do the trick). We attempt to pull our weeds frequently, especially before they get too big and start producing seeds.

Sometimes we use our weeds to mulch the crops, but when they have gone to seed, they are not good for mulching – we don’t want to add those new seeds into the field. Instead, we invited over the goats we know for a treat and packed some to-go bags for the other goats who couldn’t make it over. Weeds that haven’t gone to seed are used in our composting piles too! MVM Farm does have a lot of weeds right now thanks to a great growing season with some rain! We do try to keep on top of our weeds, but this wonderful growing season has us coming up short, or in our case tall – tall weeds! We’ve decided to put a call to action out: MVM Farm is holding a “Weed Pulling Party” on August 2, 2014 from 8 to 10 AM. Please join us as we are looking for people who want to “pull” together to help us get rid of the quickly multiplying weeds! Snacks and refreshments will be provided. Hope to see you there! BODy + Soul By Carolyn Gressit, Board Secretary MVM Farm moves to the next level! On October 1, 2011, we signed the lease for the land where MVM Farm now prospers—a historic date in our almost 40 years, for we had never before administered a farm on leased land. A food co-op having a farm is also quite unusual, but the decision to lease the farm was in accordance with several of the Board’s Ends: • The community benefits from outreach, support, and education. • The Co-op provides information and access to healthy food and health products. • The Co-op models sustainable living. • The Co-op supports local and regional production and encourages a diverse food system. Outreach, support, and education have been a mainstay of the Farm: public-school classroom tours and linkage, classes in gardening techniques, internships through NMSU, volunteer days—and just random, curious folks stopping by to see what is going on and getting an impromptu tour! Access to healthy food: What could be fresher and healthier than the veggies provided by the Farm to stores, markets, and restaurants? Sustainable living: The Farm uses sustainable practices, including drip irrigation, composting, and organic fertilizers. Encourages a diverse food system: The Farm has worked with other local efforts to deal with the “food deserts” in our area, in terms of both practices and distribution. So the MVM Farm has now reached the point at which it is beneficial for it—and for the Coop—to change its status to nonprofit. There are very important benefits of being a nonprofit: • As we know, nonprofits, or 501(c)(3)s, are considered public charities, and are thus eligible for federal exemption from payment of corporate income tax. Once exempt from this tax, the nonprofit will usually be exempt from similar state and local taxes. If an organization has obtained 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status, an individual’s or company’s charitable contributions to this entity are tax-deductible. So YOU would be able to help support the Farm with your donations! • Nonprofit organizations are allowed to solicit charitable donations from the public. Many foundations and government agencies limit their grants to public charities.

• A nonprofit organization exists as a legal entity in its own right and separately from its founder(s). Incorporation puts the nonprofit’s mission and structure above the personal interests of individuals associated with it. Now, if you have been buying your MVM Farm veggies at the Co-op, you may be thinking, “Oh, my goodness—my yummy veggies are going away somewhere else!” Rest assured that nothing is going away - all of the services and products provided, all of the linkages the Farm has established--will go forward and continue as they have been. Classes, tours, classroom visits, NMSU interns, volunteer days—all will still be available. In addition, the non-profit farm will still be linked to and assisted by the Co-op through our GM, Shahid Mustafa, who currently serves on the Board of Directors of the MVM Farm, and will continue to do so. Welcome to MVM Farm, 501(c) (3)!
