City annexation request denied

Cindy Rowan WESTON – For those residents wondering about the process of ballot counting for the upcoming Weston municipal election, the following information from the office of Lewis County Clerk Cynthia S. Rowan should clear up those questions and concerns. According to Rowan, WV Code provides the following, “In elections using a paper ballot, the votes are counted in the polling places by the poll workers. When the polls close at 7:30 p.m. and all of the election day paperwork is finished, then the same poll workers take the oath as a counting board. At this time, they will open all absentee envelopes and all early voting envelopes that have been furnished them by the Clerk’s office and place the ballots into the ballot box to be counted along with the election day ballots. The two poll workers with the keys will open the locks on the ballot box. With one election commissioner watching, an election commissioner will reach in and bring out one ballot. He or she will read aloud the recipient of the vote for each contest. The poll clerks, each with their own tally sheet, will tabulate the votes as they are read. The ballot is then handed off to the other election commissioner to be strung as counted. Once all ballots have been processed in this manner, then the poll clerks will add the votes for each contest. Their tally sheets need to match for each contest or that particular contest will need to be recounted. See Election on Page 2
