WESTON — Memorial Day is a day that means many different things to so many people. At Mountaineer Military Museum, it means honoring are fallen heroes. During the annual Vet-Together, held each Memorial Day weekend, the War on terror Monument was unveiled on the front lawn of the museum with great reverence to our heroes of the War on Terror. According to Barbara McVaney, executive director and co-founder of the museum, she and her husband Ron, the man behind the museum, were approached by a group of veterans interested in seeing such a monument placed on the grounds of the museum. According to McVaney, the group of veterans raised the funds for the monument over the course of two years which culminated in the unveiling of the monument. Ina first for the museum, representatives of the WV Gold Star Mothers Organization stopped by for a visit, according to McVaney, WVGSM President Shirley White led the delegation. McVaney reported the group thoroughly enjoyed their visit. The Mountaineer Military Museum is the result of “The Promise” to honor and remember those who served and sacrifice for the freedoms that we enjoy. According to their website, childhood friends were drafted into their country’s service and only one made it home. A graveside promise was made that “I’ll never let anyone forget you guys.” See War on Page 2

THURSDAY Chance of Thunderstorms 83/64

Lewis County sits at the crossroads of I-79 and Corridor-H. Group members note that while there are many things to love about the community, because it is home, there are many things that need fixed. U.S. Census data reports that the county population has continually declined since the 1970’s. In their mission statement on Facebook, the group states “We must take responsibility for our situation and do the work to make it better. There are several groups of citizens already working on projects to enhance our quality of life. We appreciate and applaud their efforts. With this group, we aim to ‘think outside the box’. We believe that having a vision and sharing it with like minds will improve our chances for progress and success. Everyone’s voice is important and worthwhile.”

FRIDAY Chance of Showers 75/56

By John Clise Editor LEWIS COUNTY – This year’s Lewis County Relay for Life is set for Sat., June 8 from 6 p.m. to midnight at the Robert L. Bland Middle School athletic field. This year’s relay event is sure to be another successful event with 16 teams registered with a combined team membership of well over 100 people. According to their website, fund raising for the 2019 one is over $36,000 and counting. One of the most popular and touching parts of relay is the lighting of luminarias in memory of a loved one who is battling cancer or has battled cancer. Luminarias honor every life touched by cancer. You can dedicate them to a loved one lost, someone currently battling, or anyone who’s overcome it. When you attend a Relay event, you’ll see the Luminarias decorated with names and sometimes SATURDAY Mostly Sunny 77/59

messages to the people they’re dedicated to. After dark, Relay participants share an emotional moment when each Luminaria is lit in remembrance of a life touched by cancer. Together, we take a moment of silence to remember the loved ones they’re dedicated to. When you make a donation for a Luminaria it helps fund the American Cancer Society’s mission to help save lives. Relay also includes many other events and observances including the opening ceremony. According to American Cancer Society, the opening ceremony kicks things off right with a welcoming all the Relay participants. As tradition goes, first the survivors take a celebratory lap, with the crowd cheering them on. Then caregivers take their turn to get recognized for all they do to support their loved ones.
