Brute strength and technique tested at Stock Truck Pulls

Pulling fans from all around come to take in the sights and sounds, as drivers attempt to outpull their competition. Hear the engines rumble as trucks are put to the test pulling a heavy sled along the track, in hopes of taking home bragging rights and other prizes and accolades. This year’s action will get started at 7:00 p.m., on Saturday, August 3. Head down to the Action Sport Track to watch as various sizes and types of trucks compete to bring home the title of pulling champion. Known as the world’s heaviest motorsport, there’s no denying the draw of the truck pulls. High-powered machines make their way down 300-foot-long dirt track, determining the strongest machine and best driver. Unlike other motorsports, pulling isn’t about the speed you travel, but the distance pulled. The rules are simple: hook up to the sled, bare down and move the weight the furthest. The sled itself is a unique aspect of the sport, as the unit is made so that the weight progressively moves forward during the pull, creating added friction to really put a truck to the test. This year, the Stock Truck Pulls will feature five different pulling categories including 6200lb Open Gasoline, 7,000lb Street stock Gas, Street Stock Diesel, 8,000lb Open Diesel and Street Legal Semi classes. The top pullers will receive not only bragging rights, but cash prizes. Those drivers entering in the Street stock Gas 7,000lb class will compete to bring home the first-place prize of $100, the second-place award of $75 or the third-place cash prize of $50. Those daring enough to enter the competition in the Open Gas 6200lb will be competing to bring home $175 for the top finisher, $125 for a secondplace finish, $100 for third-place, $75 to the fourth-place spot and fifth place will earn $50. Diesel drivers will have two classes to enter at this year’s fair, including Street Stock Diesel and Open Diesel 8,000lb. Street Stockers will be vying for $100 to the first-place finisher, $75 for second and $50 for third. The open diesel class contestants can earn $175 for a first-place finish and $125 for second-place. The third-place puller will receive $100, fourth $75 and fifth-place will earn a puller $50. The Street Legal Semi first-place spot will be awarded $175, while second-place will earn $125, third-place will receive $100, fourth place will bring home $75 and fifth place earns $50. Any class with more than eight entries will see an increase in the prize package. Those brave enough to take part in this year’s truck pull will need to have their mean machine registered beginning at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday. There is a $10 fee to enter the competition. Get close to the action in the pits, with a pit pass for $5. For a complete list of rules and regulations, please visit the fair’s website www.tcfairgrounds.com. For more information, please call Dave Crimm at 304677-0481. -7-

Get down and dirty at the Mud Bogs Come and get down and dirty at the Taylor County Fair during this year’s ATV/UTV and regular mud bogs. This fan favorite will be returning to the fair after a hiatus, so be sure to mark your calendars for some muddy fun! Mud bogging, an off-road motorsport where participants drive a vehicle through a pit of mud or a track of a set length, is an event that you won’t want to miss. Head on down to the Action Sports Track on Tuesday, July 30 to watch as drivers put their ATV and UTV’s to the test in the mud pit. The action will begin at 7:30 p.m. Then on Thursday, August 1, drivers will be back in action, this time attempting to take their trucks and SUVs through the pit. This year, there will be five categories for participants to enter including Street Stock, Hot Street, Super Street, Modified and Open Class RWYB. Those wishing to participate in either mud bog will need to have their vehicles inspected by 5:30 p.m. on Thursday. For a complete list of rules and regulations, please visit www.tcfairgrounds.com and search mud bog. Both mud bogs are sure to have fans cheering in the stands. Both events you won’t want to miss!

ATV Drag races more than just horsepower and speed

Each year, ATV enthusiasts fill the stands of the action sports track at the Taylor County Fair Grounds to cheer on their favorite riders during the ATV Drag Race. This year, head to the track on Friday, August 2 to see whose skill is top-notch and who gets left in the dust. Hosted by the Mineral Well Drag Racing Club, in conjunction with the Taylor County Fair Board, the event is sure to draw in riders from near and far. Board members revealed that participants do not need to be a member of the club in order to compete in this thrilling event. The rules of the game are simple: adrenaline-filled riders will pair up in twos to see whose machine is the fastest and whose skills reign supreme, as they tear down the dirt track, racing toward the checkered flag. The winner of each heat will advance until there is one ATV left standing. ATV Drag Racing is more than just horsepower and speed. It tests a rider’s skills in handling their craft, along with their reaction time. All those components are put to the test when the lights switch to green. Competitors may begin registering their machines for the ATV Drag Races at 5:00 p.m., and the competition will heat up as the lights turn green at 7:00 p.m. There is a $10 entry fee, in addition to the $10 gate entry fee. Pit passes are available for an additional $5. This year’s drag race will be following the rules and regulations set by the Mineral Wells Racing Club, which may be found on their website, www.mwatvdragracing.com.

Get down with Wyatt Turner

Wyatt Turner the country music artist, hailing from Pocahontas County West Virginia, and the writer of the WV anthem “You Remind Me Of West Virginia” will be taking the stage at the Taylor County Fair, on Thursday, August 1, at 7:00 p.m. Born in 1989, Turner hails from deep in the Allegheny Mountains. His hometown is a tiny community on West Virginia’s Greenbriar River in Pocahontas Country named Stony Bottom. Wyatt’s journey in music all began on YouTube and he might be the first country artist to have launched his career on a social-networking website. And as you might expect in that media environment, it has happened with blinding speed. “But I don’t ever want to forget where I come from. I am proud of being from West Virginia,” Turner expressed. “It is so beautiful and so are its people. They are the most hospitable people anywhere, and I just want everyone to know how proud I am of my home-town folks. West By-God Virginia.” So be sure to head down to the Taylor County Fairgrounds on Thursday, and listen to one of West Virginia’s own take the stage.

Jackson Gardner brings unique sound to Taylor County

On Saturday, head on down to the Taylor County Fair to hear Jackson Gardner take the stage at 8:00 p.m., where he will be bringing a blend of country, rock, red dirt and Americana born music. Gardner was raised in Waynesburg, PA and is a singer/songwriter. At age 14 he picked up a guitar and proceeded to teach himself the craft of playing guitar and writing songs. While spending countless hours every day listening to a vast variety of artists from Waylon Jennings to Jimi Hendrix, he allowed these inspirations to mold his process. “I was raised on Country music ‘the good stuff’ like Waylon, Strait, Haggard, but I always had a deep love for rock and blues or any music that contained great guitar players and songwriters,” he commented. “I was and am still drawn to music made by artists that create and perform from a place of true conviction and I hold myself to that same standard. Truth is key” Gardner has made a habit of breaking the mold most artists are squeezed into. This habit has helped him develop a style of writing and performing that bridges genres and challenges the status quo. “I’m not sure what genre my music fits in. At the end of the day I don’t care what it’s called, I just do what feels right,” he stated. “What’s in a name anyway? As long as it’s real and honest it doesn’t matter to me.” So be sure to head down to the stage on Saturday, to hear Gardner bring his blend of music to Taylor County.

The Taylor County Fair Board believes that participation by the youth’s in these shows and exhibitions allows them to learn lessons that will be used later in life, including business and marketing skills, while helping to build their self-esteem. Support of the auctions provides recognition and incentive for young adults to earn college funds, buy more animals and receive practical training in business. Buyers can support a young person in their community by purchasing an animal, either for themselves or for the purpose of resale. Also this year, the Taylor County Fair Board will once again offer an open cattle show. Local farmers can bring in their prized cattle and compete for the Grand Champion ribbons. The open cattle show is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. on Friday, August 2. Open cattle registration costs $10 per animal and all entries need to be preregistered by July 22. Register at the fair website or call the WVU Extension Office at 304-265-3303 if you need assistance registering.
