AREA NEWS Upshur cooks ensure kids are fed during school closure If you ask most students what their favorite part of the school day is, most will respond with “lunch” or maybe “recess!” Lunch always ranks high on the list because students get to spend time with their friends, while enjoying a good meal. Many of our Upshur County students have to depend upon these free school meals. Our school cafeteria employees provide nutritious and consistent meals for all students. Our cooks are very busy people during the school day; they prepare breakfast, a second breakfast (for those students who wish to eat later), lunch, snack and some schools even offer a supper program. Last year, Upshur County School cooks prepared and served 195,827 breakfasts and 221,812 lunches for a total of 417,639 meals to Upshur County students. Facing the challenges of the pandemic, we have one
week behind us and Upshur County cooks are still going strong, feeding more children than ever! Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Sara Stankus said, “these are no longer school cafeterias and kitchens. Our facilities are now “emergency response centers,” responding to the mandates of Governor Justice and our desire to feed our children, Upshur County has seen an increase in the number of meals served, going from 1,486 on Monday to 5,404 on Friday. Though this has been a huge burden to our system and our employees, we believe in what we are doing for our families. In order to sustain our efforts, we plan to move to a multi-day delivery system to be available one day a week. We are using our employees, but plan to reach out to community volunteers who have offered to help. We are using social distancing and rigorous
