From the Principal…. Greetings Mounds View High School Families, I sincerely hope that you and your families had a wonderful and restful Spring Break. Whether your time was spent traveling or enjoying the simple pleasure of being at home, it is my wish that everyone enjoyed the break and your children are ready for the “home-stretch.” April has traditionally been a busy month for schools in Minnesota. This year is no different. MCA testing takes place this month and 11th grade students district-wide will take the ACT on April 19. More information to come regarding these assessments. Spring activities are underway. We have a wide array of co-curricular opportunities available for students. If you have questions related to any of our activities, have your student visit with Mr. Madison in the Activities Office. Key dates to keep in mind this month include: the annual Mustang Night Out (MNO) Dance on April 8, Communication Night on April 13, the Jazz Band Swing Dance on April 21, and our spring theatrical production of The “Three Musketeers” which runs April 27-29. Get to Know ‘Em Meet Allyson Manns My name is Allyson Manns and I teach in the English department. After spending the first 18 years of my life living in Wisconsin and cementing my love for the Green Bay Packers, I moved to Minnesota to attend Bethel University. I graduated from college in 2010 and a few months later, I moved to Guadalajara, Mexico, where I taught 7th-9th grade English at a bilingual private school for two years. Tacos were in abundance, my Spanish-speaking skills were strengthened, and I grew to love being immersed in another culture. I moved back to Minnesota and started at Mounds View in the spring of 2013. What drew me to teaching was working with teenagers, so I make a point of being involved here at MV. I’m the advisor for Student Council and also for Fellowship of Christian Athletes and connecting with students is the best part of my job. I do have a life outside of school, too! Traveling is a huge priority of mine, and I’ve visited over 43 states and 17 countries. I’ve crushed cocoa beans with my feet at a cocoa plantation in Grenada; contracted typhoid fever in Mexico; ziplined through the rain forest of Puerto Rico; and ridden a bike through the narrow cobblestoned streets of several European countries. When I’m not planning my next trip, I can be found baking, trying out new restaurants around the cities, spending time with family in Wisconsin, laughing at my kitten Nora, trying to convince myself that working out is fun, and binge watching Netflix.
Meet Stephen Sweeney Hello! My name is Stephen Sweeney and this is my first year teaching at Mounds View and Chippewa. I teach the Philharmonic Orchestra at Mounds View and the 6th graders at Chippewa. It’s amazing to see students’ growth in character and musicianship between the middle school and high school, and one exciting thing about teaching both age groups is making sure I’m in the right “mode” for the school I’m at. I graduated from St. Olaf College with a B.M. in Music Education. My time there taught me how music can build tightly knit communities. I also experienced how playing in ensembles can open doors to exploring the world! During my time there, my orchestra traveled to China, Argentina, Uruguay, and 30 states in the U.S. I was also able to teach orchestra at an all-Hawaiian school in Hawaii for the month of January, and it was breathtaking. I fulfilled my life dream of learning to surf and the rush exceeded all expectations - hang ten! I’m thankful that Mounds View provides similar opportunities for students; I had an amazing five days with the orchestra students in NYC this year, and am looking forward to our upcoming trip to London and Paris! It seems like I can never get enough music in my day. After school, I teach private lessons from my home on violin and guitar, and rehearse with my quartet that plays for weddings and gigs around the Twin Cities. I also enjoy composing pieces for guitar, voice, and violin, or writing songs for loved ones on special occasions like birthdays or anniversaries. When I’m not playing music, I absolutely have to be active! I play volleyball, racquetball, and soccer on a regular basis, and coach volleyball/soccer at Chippewa! For me, being active means being outdoors as much as possible. My goal is to visit as many state parks as possible while I camp, hike/climb mountains, and go for runs through the incredible landscapes of Minnesota (and the Pacific Northwest!).

Summer Jobs Summer jobs are an excellent way to build your resume! A summer job not only gives you the chance to earn money, but also learn new skills. Colleges and Universities are interested in applicants who identify, apply for, get, and maintain summer jobs. Summer jobs demonstrate an applicant’s willingness to take the initiative to find employment, prepare for a job interview, develop personal responsibility and accountability by showing up and completing assigned work, and work with people one may not often associate with during the academic year. All of these characteristics and opportunities make students a well-rounded applicant. New Associate Principal Announced Welcome to Greg Martin who will join the Mounds View team as Associate Principal on July 1. Mr. Martin has experience as an educator and leader in middle school, high school, and post-secondary education. Most recently, he has served as assistant principal at Elk River High School and an adjunct professor at the University of St. Thomas. Greg and his fiance Erin both live in St. Louis Park. He is excited to build positive relationships with the staff, students, and community members in our district.

Health Office Spring Safety Tips from the Health Office Spring is in the air and with that comes much excitement - longer hours of sunlight, more time outdoors, and prom is just around the corner! Here are some helpful tips and reminders for a safe and healthy spring season: Flu reminders: We are continuing to see cases of influenza in our communities. Sometimes still confused with the “stomach flu”, influenza (or “the flu”) is a respiratory illness with symptoms that include fever, cough, sore throat, headache, extreme tiredness, and body aches. If your student exhibits these symptoms, please allow them the rest they need at home. Remember to call the Health Office at 651-621-7104 to report symptoms so that we continue to be aware of cases in our Mounds View community. For more information from the Minnesota Department of Health, CLICK HERE. Let’s get outside! Many of us are spending more time outdoors as the temperatures continue climb. This is a great time for a few Spring check-ins: Sun safety: Check the expiration dates on sunscreens and start getting back in the habit of using sun protection. Be on the lookout for ticks: If you’re spending time in the woods or tall grass, be mindful that ticks may be spending time out there, too! Experts recommend covering up to reduce exposed areas of skin, wearing spray that contains DEET, and checking daily for ticks after spending time outdoors to remove them as soon as possible. Protective gear: As we get out those bikes, boards, and whatever else we may be riding as we enjoy our time outside, be sure those helmets and other protective wear are coming out with them! Are you having “the talks” with your teens? With prom just around the corner, this may be a time that parents are reminded of some of the topics that can get tricky to address with teens: setting healthy boundaries, dating safety, and expectations around alcohol and drug use, for example. Although these can be difficult conversations, teens report that their parents’ messaging is the most influential to their decision making in these (and many other areas). And what works best is to have frequent, informal conversations. Be honest, try to be relaxed, and listen to your teens’ point of view so that you have a better understanding of what information they’re receiving and where they are getting their messaging. Achievements & Awards Sophomore Wins Global Citizen Award
Mia Spieler (10) has won the 2017 Global Citizen Award through the AATSP (American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese). Last spring, she placed in the top 95% nationally on the NSE (National Spanish Exam) for level 2. This achievement qualified her to submit an application for this award. She won a scholarship, valued at over $2,000, to attend a two week session at the Concordia Language Village in Bemidji this summer! Congratulations to Mia and her current and former Spanish teachers.

Ten students from Mounds View qualified to participate in the annual Minnesota DECA State Career Development Conference in Minneapolis, MN, on March 19-21, 2017. During the school year, approximately 3,500 Minnesota DECA student members take part in the organization’s competitive events program, allowing them to compete in over 50 events focused in the areas of entrepreneurship, finance, hospitality, marketing and other related fields. The competitions are designed to simulate real-life business scenarios and test students’ academic understanding and skills development. After qualifying earlier this year, district winners put their talents to the test during the State Career Development Conference.

MacPhail Center for Music Concerto & Aria
Eliot Kim (10), a 15-year-old pianist, performed in the MacPhail Center for Music Concerto & Aria Recital in March. The Concerto & Aria Recital is MacPhail’s premier performance event for students. MacPhail students of all instruments and ages are eligible to perform before a panel of judges in two rounds of auditions with a movement from a concerto or an aria from an opera. He performed Piano Concerto No. 1 in E minor, Op. 11, Mvt. III: Rondo: Vivace by Frederic Chopin.
Junior Wins National Travel Award
Nandini Avula (11) has won the 2017 Junior Travel Award for her achievement on the National Spanish Examination (NSE) and for her excellent skills in the Spanish language. In July, Nandini will be traveling to Peru with the other winners. This national award, valued at over $3,500, is given each year to just twenty-four students from across the United States who become eligible by earning a high score on the NSE and then submitting samples of their written and oral work in Spanish to a selection committee. Congratulations to Nandini and her current and former Spanish teachers.

Around MVHS Leather Workshop A representative from Tandy Leather held workshops throughout the school day for students interested in the art of leather crafting. Students were able to use tools and supplies provided by Tandy to create bookmarks. The ILC has an assortment of tools and supplies for students wanting to explore tooling and making with leather. This hands-on experience is a great opportunity that students may not otherwise get to experience.

Around MVHS Physics Fair The Physics Fair is a long-term, open-ended group project that allows physics students to demonstrate their understanding of the physics concepts they have been studying, develop fundamental skills in the engineering of a project and gain experience in project focused group dynamics. Since 1999, the Mounds View Schools Education Foundation has provided financial support for the annual Mounds View and Irondale High School Physics Fairs.

Around MVHS AP Computer Science Principles Ms. O’Bryan’s AP Computer Science Principles class took a field trip to Target. Students who attended the field trip had a real “feel” for what iterative development looks like and feels like. Focusing on reflection was another key point Target’s team focused on. Students saw the real-world connection to their classwork by seeing that reflection is constantly part of Target’s process too. Students enjoyed sharing their project ideas with the engineers as well - it was a good opportunity for students to brag a bit and also share a bit about their work in class with Target’s team. Target’s message of “always keep learning” was spot-on for the group.
