Palomar Family YMCA has been offering outstanding summer camps for years. Our goal is to introduce children to as many new experiences as possible and help each child feel confident and secure in a fun, safe camp environment. YMCA day camp challenges children to grow in imagination, creativity, self-directed initiative, and leadership. We’re dedicated to changing the lives of our campers by creating friendships and memories that will last a lifetime.

All of our YMCA day camps have been accredited by the American Camp Association. Our day camps exceed the highest standards in the camp industry, including health, safety, personnel, transportation and facilities.

REGISTRATION INFORMATION Registration Start Dates

YMCA members have priority registration and may begin registering for camp on March 11. Participants may begin registering on March 19.

Online Registration

To register online, members may visit palomar.ymca.org. If you know the camps you wish to sign up for, go to the “Register/Pay” tab. To browse camps, go to the camp section, and then add camps to your cart. A medical release/ liability waiver must be completed online as well.

Payment Methods

We have two payment methods to register for camp: 1. Paying in full (prices listed include a $25 non-refundable deposit per camp week).

2. Paying a $25 non-refundable deposit. Payment in full must be made 7 days prior to the first day of camp or your child will be dropped from the roster and you will forfeit your deposit.

YMCA Memberships

To receive the member rate, membership must be current at the time camp takes place.

Cancellations, Transfers, Y-Voucher and Refund Policy Before camp starts, we pay

our vendors, admission tickets, supplies and hire our staff according to enrollment. Please read our policies below.

Cancellations: If you request to cancel your enrollment before the start of the camp week, you will receive a 100% refund or Y-voucher (minus deposit). If you request to cancel your enrollment on the first day of camp, you will receive a 75% refund or a Y-voucher (minus deposit and vendor fees). A refund or Y-voucher will NOT be given if you request to cancel your enrollment on the second day of the camp week. Y-vouchers do not expire and are valid at any YMCA in San Diego County for any program, membership or service. Y-vouchers may be transferred to another member of your family or friend.

Transfers: Transfer requests may be made though the Tuesday of the camp week (space permitting).

Camp fee differences must be paid at the time of the transfer. All transfers are subject to availability, and no transfers are guaranteed.

There will be no Y-vouchers or refunds issued for missed or sick days of camp.

Medical Release Forms All campers must complete a medical release/liability waiver at the time of registration. You may obtain a copy of this form by visiting us online or in person at the Welcome Center during regular business hours.

Campers who have not completed a YMCA medical release/liability waiver will not be permitted to participate in our program until the form is completed by a parent or legal guardian. Be sure to include the names of authorized adults as they appear on their photo IDs.

QUESTIONS Parent Handbook

Please read the Parent Handbook prior to sending your child to camp. This short survival guide can be accessed online at palomar.ymca.org or picked-up at the YMCA’s Welcome Center. It should help answer any questions you have about camp.

Is camp a good fit for my child?

If your little one is at least 5 years old, potty trained and can follow directions within camp ratios, then camp is a wonderful place for your child to gain new experiences and make new friends. If you have questions about the fit of a specific camp, please feel free to contact the YMCA, and we can walk you through your concerns.

Where do I drop off my child?

Please be sure you are dropping your child off at the correct location by checking your receipts or calling the YMCA if you have any questions.

What are the camp hours?

Camp runs from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. daily. We offer free extended care from 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. where children will participate in low impact traditional camp activities supervised by counselors who may be different than those they have been with throughout the camp day. A late fee of $1 per minute per child will be assessed for children picked up after 6:00 PM.

Do I need to sign my child in and out daily?

The YMCA requires that all children are to be properly signed in by an adult and turned over to a YMCA staff person. This helps ensure the safety of your child. We do require children to be signed out by an authorized adult, even if they are participating in other YMCA programs immediately following camp.

Please note: It is our responsibility to see that your child leaves with the appropriate person each day. We will ask for photo identification daily.

Please do not be offended. This is done with the child’s safety in mind.

When filling out your paperwork, make certain that the names of the authorized adults are the same as they appear on their photo IDs. If you are going to be late, please call the YMCA immediately.

Who are the camp staff?

We feel confident that we have the best staff around! They are as diverse as our campers and have undergone at least 24 hours of training in everything from risk management, positive disciplinary techniques to how to teach and much more. All camp staff members have background checks and are first aid and CPR certified. Additionally, references have been checked on each staff member.

How many staff will be watching my camper?

We operate on the following ratios, which are recommended by the American Camp Association.

What should my child bring/wear to camp?

All campers must bring their own lunch, a small snack and water bottle to camp daily. The YMCA will provide an additional afternoon snack.

Please send only non-perishable foods because refrigeration is not available. Campers should also bring a labeled water bottle, sunscreen, swim suit, towel, and a sweatshirt for campers who may get cold. Campers should wear closed toed shoes, as we are very active, and clothes in which they are ready to play hard and get dirty.

Campers are not allowed to bring toys and card games, video games, personal cd players/stereos/ iPods, expensive jewelry/watches, money, alcohol or drugs, vehicles, animals, weapons, or cell phones. The YMCA is not responsible for any items that are lost or stolen and under no circumstance will reimburse for lost items.

What if my camper needs to take medication during camp?

In order for your camp’s Unit Leader to administer medication during the day, your doctor-prescribed medication must be checked in at our camp information center. No over the counter medication will be administered. You will need to complete the YMCA Medication Release form each Monday in order for our staff to administer medication.

What will my camper be doing everyday at camp?

For each week of camp, there will be a schedule available online at our website, palomar.ymca.org.

The schedules will give you an inside look at where your camper is going and what activities they will be doing throughout the day. Schedules are subject to change. For more information or updates, please visit or call the Welcome Center at 760-745-7490.

How will my camper be transported to and from field trips?

The YMCA transports our campers on school buses routinely inspected by the California Highway Patrol. Due to the nature of the routes and multiple stops we’re making daily, our buses fall under the rules for transport vehicles that require that children must be 6 years old to ride on the bus under California Vehicle Code. A set of our bus rules are available for your review in our Parent Handbook.

Our bus drivers are CPR and First Aid certified and have completed a background check and drug/ alcohol test. Though we try to keep a consistent schedule and accomplish all of our planned activities, departure and arrival times, as well as field trips, are subject to change without notice.

What if my camper needs special assistance?

We are here to inspire kids to work together, play together, and create friendships that can last a lifetime. At the Palomar Family YMCA, we are passionate about youth development for all.

Because your child’s safety is our number one priority, accommodations for children with special needs are made based on the availability of trained staff, camps available, and your child’s needs and our available resources.

Please complete and submit an Inclusion Intake Form to our camp department prior to registration.

Forms are available on our website and at our Welcome Center. Due to high demand, please allow a minimum of two weeks for evaluation of registration materials.

We’ve made some changes this summer!

When you’re looking for your camp favorites, please keep in mind: GRADES AND AGES Children must be at least 5 years old and/or entering into Kindergarten, in order to participate in YMCA camps. Exceptions to camp age and grade requirements can only be made if within 3 months of the required age listed. Director approval is required for all age exceptions. Please note that some grade limitations are set by outside camp vendors and cannot be changed by the YMCA. Please see our Welcome Center for more information.

LEADERS-IN-TRAINING PROGRAM (L.I.T.) After your teen completes one of our training courses he or she will become an official L.I.T., and is eligible to enroll into L.I.T. Fieldwork during the remainder of the camp season. L.I.T.s will be assigned to assist our talented day camp staff with the daily operation of a particular camp.

This program provides an excellent opportunity for teens to learn handson job experience and responsibilities, while still under the supervision of our camp staff team.

Additionally, all hours completed within L.I.T. Fieldwork can be recorded as community service hours. *PLEASE NOTE: All training is based out of Palomar Family YMCA, but placement site is dependent on the camp location.

Join Y Day Camp for a week, or an entire summer of fun! New experiences, skill building, a sense of community, and lasting friendships are all part of Traditional Day Camps. LEADERS IN TRAINING (L.I.T.) Within this program, teens learn leadership, group management skills, child development basics, and policies and procedures in relation to working with youth. Interacting with campers and representing the Y requires a certain level of professionalism and maturity. For this reason, the fieldwork program is selective. Upon completion of the L.I.T. course, teens will be invited to participate in the fieldwork program. L.I.T.s are required to follow the same dress code and expectations as our camp staff; these expectations will be detailed during the training course.

L.I.T.s may also receive a letter demonstrating their 35 hours of community service for each week of fieldwork they complete!

Want to become a camp counselor? This summer program is both fun and challenging and you will gain leadership skills while working with children.

Our L.I.T. program focuses on the personal and vocational skills that will assist you in becoming successful future leaders. This one-week training session includes topics such as child development, camp leadership, group games, supervision, planning and administration, public speaking and presentations, interviewing skills, first aid, CPR certification and a variety of other useful life skills!

The Fieldwork program is an opportunity for the L.I.T.s to use their leadership skills in the field of camp and enjoy rewards of working with the Y’s incredible staff team. L.I.T.s will experience various camp programs, assist in the daily operations of camp and receive valuable on-the-job experience that will help build a strong foundation for either a recreational or childcare career. Parental Involvement: We encourage parents to take time after class to talk positively about your child’s experience. Practice during family or swim time helps to reinforce skills learned during lessons. Parents watching swim lessons from the pool deck will help promote the child’s independence and will allow them to focus on the task at hand. Evaluations are available on the last day of class.

Polliwogs & Guppies 1:6 Adult Lessons 1:12 Helpful Parent Tips: • Do not feed your child for at least 30 minutes prior to their swim lesson. This will help prevent cramping and sickness during lessons.

• Goggles are not a requirement unless they are at the level of stroke work and swimming at distances further than 10 feet at a time. If your child is more comfortable with goggles in the water, we recommend goggles without the nose piece to ensure child will learn appropriate breathing techniques.

• Hair should be pulled back and away from the face.

• Wet suits and rash guards can be beneficial for children that tend to get cold. We keep our pool heated to 82 degrees year-round.

SWIM LESSONS FREE PARENT-CHILD LESSONS - 6-36 MONTHS MEMBER BENEFIT: This FREE class is designed for beginners and toddlers. Children will be taught comfort in a swimming pool with a focus on developing basic swimming skills such as floating, kicking, paddling, blowing bubbles, and breath control. Children will also learn how to interact with an instructor and become accustomed to a swim lesson environment. Children that advance will begin to focus on skill retention and having the ability to perform skills on their own. Children will learn paddling, kicking, breath control, jumping, and eventually independent floating and swimming. *Participants are required to wear tight fitting plastic pants or swim diapers while in the pool.

Adults must accompany their child in the pool.

PRESCHOOL LESSONS | 3 -5 YEARS OLD Pikes This class is designed for those participants with very little swimming ability.

Children will work toward accomplishing kicking, front and back floating, breath control, and independent swimming.

Eels This class is designed for children who can swim 5-10 feet independently with their face in the water. Participants will work toward accomplishing breathing techniques, coordination of the front crawl stroke, kicking on their front as well as their back, deep water adjustment.

Rays This class is designed for children who can swim on their back and who are learning to coordinate the front crawl stroke with side breathing. Participants will work towards accomplishing rotary breathing, backstroke, treading water and deep water swimming.

Starfish This class is designed for participants who can swim the front and back crawl stroke across the width of the pool. Participants will work on elementary backstroke, breaststroke, and diving.

SWIM LESSONS PROGRESSIVE CLASSES | 6 - 15 YEARS OLD Polliwog This class is designed for those individuals with very little swimming ability. Participants will work toward accomplishing front and back floating, kicking, independent swimming, and comfort in deep water.

Guppy This class is designed for those participants who are learning to swim the crawl stroke with their face in the water. Individuals will work toward accomplishing rotary breathing with the front crawl, back crawl, underwater swimming and deep water confidence.

Minnow This class is designed for participants who can swim one length of the pool performing the front crawl stroke with rotary breathing. Participants must also have a good working knowledge of the back crawl. Children will work toward accomplishing the breaststroke, elementary backstroke, endurance and water safety skills.

Fish This class is designed for those participants who can swim two lengths of the pool. Participants will work toward accomplishing the sidestroke, dolphin kick, and basic lifesaving skills. The front crawl stroke, backstroke, breaststroke and elementary backstroke continue to be perfected.

Flying Fish This class is designed for those participants who can swim two lengths of the pool. At this level, participants should be able to swim four lengths of the pool. Swimmers will begin to learn the butterfly stroke and will continue to learn lifesaving skills. The front crawl, backstroke, breast stroke and side stroke will continue to be perfected.

Shark This is the final class before participants are ready for our swim team.

Swimmers should be able to swim 4 lengths of the pool for both freestyle and backstroke. Participants will continue to perfect their breaststroke and elementary backstroke and will begin to perfect the butterfly stroke.

ADULT LESSONS | 16+ YEARS OLD For ages 16+ years old, it’s never too late to take swim lessons or to improve on what you already know! Adult swim lessons are priced out the same for progressive lessons.
