Schumacher critically injured in skiing accident Michael Schumacher, seven-time Formula One world champion who drove for Ferrari and later for Mercedes, slipped into coma and remains in a very critical condition after suffering a head injury in a fall while skiing in the French Alps resort of Meribel on Sunday. He suffered injuries despite wearing a helmet during the mishap. He was conscious while being airlifted to a local hospital in Moutiers. “Schumacher was suffering a serious brain trauma with coma on his arrival, which required an immediate neurosurgical operation”, the hospital in the southeast French city of Grenoble said in a statement, MOTOWN INDIA SUPPLEMENT

adding, “He remains in a critical condition.” Currently, he is under the care of physician Gérard Saillant, who is a brain and spinal injury expert and a personal friend of Schumacher. It has been learnt that on December 29, 2013, Schumacher was skiing with his son when he fell and hit his head on a rock, sustaining a head injury even though he was wearing a helmet. Schumacher was skiing outside the marked pistes at that time. A piste is a marked ski run or path down a mountain for snow skiing, snowboarding, or other mountain sports. He was attended by two ski patrollers and airlifted within

fifteen minutes to a hospital in Moûtiers, and then on to a hospital in Grenoble specialising in head injuries. After winning consecutive championships with Benetton in 1994/5, Schumacher moved to Ferrari in 1996 and won another five consecutive drivers’ titles with them from 2000 to 2004. Schumacher retired from Formula One driving in 2006 staying with Ferrari as an advisor. Schumacher later signed a threeyear contract to drive for the new Mercedes team starting in 2010. As part of the Mercedes team, he raced at the Buddh International Circuit in Greater Noida during the F1 race. JANUARY 2014 / 5

Vredestein tyres from Apollo now in India Report: Abhijeet Singh, Photography: Mohd. Nasir Vredestein, the high performance tyre brand from Netherlands, has finally arrived on the Indian shores. Vredestein, the brand owned by Apollo Tyres, has been closely associated with Giugiaro Design developing their tread patterns adding a touch of style to this otherwise mundane perceived product. Apollo tyres acquired the Dutch brand Vredestein in the year 2009 to form Apollo Vredestein. And now these performance tyres will be available in the country for the premium range of cars and SUVs. To test how well they perform under multiple prevalent conditions, we were invited to 8 / JANUARY 2014

the Buddh International Circuit by Apollo. Different types of tyres from Vredestein’s catalogue were slapped on to Audi vehicles which were driven on slalom, offroad and track courses. The tyres perform excellently everywhere. The Ultrac SUV Sessanta fit on Audi Q5 and Q3 would be the best compromise tyre you can buy which balances on-road and off-road usage. These tyres work very well on tarmac with less tyre noise and more comfort. Bring these off-road and you notice that even in wet mud and slippery slopes, the Ultrac SUV Sessanta grip and push you forward. You have to grant a bit

of slippage as we mentioned these are the best compromise tyres, not specialised. A slalom course is a piece of cake for the lightweight sports car but becomes hefty for a heavy luxury saloon. Here we had the A6 Limousine to play around with Ultrac Cento fitted to it. Despite the heavy soft A6, the grip levels were in fact very good. Things were made difficult by a light sprinkling of water on the surface, but the A6 was not worried and stayed planted. The stylish threads on these are not just there for show, but channel out water and reduce aquaplaning. MOTOWN INDIA SUPPLEMENT

NEWS

The final leg was on an Audi TT equipped with Ultrac Sessanta for high performance use. The Ultrac Sessanta considerably reduces wheel-spin and allows the car to convert all its power into speed. The slight safe AWD under-steer of the TT was tamed further allowing you to take more speed through a corner. Now remember these are everyday tyres and are supposed to be used on normal roads as well. The soft rubber has excellent grip levels and you may take liberties by braking in late while approaching a corner. These tyres actually grip even better than a few track

MOTOWN INDIA SUPPLEMENT

focussed tyres. Overall the performance from Vredestein is more than satisfactory. The only hassle is that because of the soft compound, the rubber will wear out sooner, and then is the slightly heavy price tag they come with. The Ultrac SUV Sessanta will cost between 20,70030,000, the Ultrac Cento are priced in the 10,50014,100 bracket and the Ultrac Sessanta will

set you back by 14,000-24,300. The high price is partly down to the superb performance of these tyres, and partly to the fact that they have to be imported from Netherlands.

NEWS Interview with Sathish Sharma Chief of India Operations at Apollo Tyres Limited Report: Jayashankar Menon You have introduced Vredestein tyres for high-end cars and SUVs in India. Do you think it is the appropriate time for your new brand to foray into the Indian market? The entry of Vredestein brand is primarily motivated by the growth in the D and E segment cars since the last three years. Secondly, the two brands -- Apollo and Vredestein -compliment each other to a large extent. How will the entry of Vredestein strengthen Apollo’s product basket in the domestic market? The introduction of Vredestein brand enables Apollo to put forward a winning portfolio of products for its consumers, which ranges from the mass market to the ultra high performance niche but growing segment. Can you shed light on Vredestein’s alliance with Audi India at the F1 Circuit in Greater Noida? Audi is a natural partner for a brand like Vredestein. This association reinforces the brand values of Vredestein and also compliments those of Audi. 10 / JANUARY 2014

The two brands came together to offer a multi-city driving experience. Have you already clinched the deal with Indian automotive OEMs for the standard fitment of Vredestein tyres? Currently, Vredestein has an OE partnership with Porsche, Mercedez Benz, Maserati, Audi and others for a unique spare tyre called ‘Space Master’. This spare tyre is a folded design, occupying only about 40pc of the space of a full-size tyre while offering weight reduction of up to 35pc. Once inflated, Vredestein spare tyre provides the same outside circumference

as a normal tyre and allows similar braking and traction controls. Apart from this, Vredestein traditionally has been an aftermarket player. So, the teams are working on the global OE strategy, as well as, expansion of the Vredestein brand globally. Will you also be planning to have separate outlets for Vredestein, both your own and franchisees? It is too early to comment on this; it all depends on the kind of demand we are able to generate for these tyres. You are introducing four different tyres in India from MOTOWN INDIA SUPPLEMENT

NEWS Vredestein’s stable. Will you be adding more in 2014? While we already have plans in place to add more products to the existing range from Vredestein, it will depend on how it is accepted by the Indian consumers and the kind of demand we are able to generate. How important is the Indian market, both in terms of Apollo and in terms of Vredestein? India still contributes 65pc to the consolidated revenues of the company, which is a 100pc contribution of the Apollo brand. What is more, with the increase in demand for high-end cars and SUVs, we believe that the introduction of Vredestein tyres to cater to this segment will help us strengthen our product offering in the passenger vehicle segment. How according to you will India benefit from the global endeavours of Apollo Tyres? Our entry into newer markets has helped us understand the different requirements that customers have in different markets, especially, the European market, which is considered to be the most challenging one. The learnings from different markets have gone into our manufacturing and R&D, which has only resulted in offering better products to our consumers across the world, including India. Can you talk about your investments in the field of R&D and marketing? In the five-year strategic planning process in 2011-12, we had identified R&D and Marketing as the two key areas MOTOWN INDIA SUPPLEMENT

to focus on for the next few years. The restructuring of our R&D was an important step towards that direction. Now, we have a Global Passenger Vehicle R&D set-up in Enschede, the Netherlands and the Global Commercial Vehicle R&D in Chennai, India. The R&D spend has also increased substantially in the last few years. Similarly, our focus on marketing led to the launch of biggest ever advertising campaign last year. Also, we will use our association with Manchester United Football Club, announced early this year, as a foundation, on which we will build the awareness of brand Apollo in India and the UK. You have mentioned that Vredestein tyres will be distributed in the country through a select few business partners in the Tier-I and Tier-II cities. What are the prerequisites you are looking at in your business partners? The first and foremost requirement for selling Vredestein tyres, for the business partner, is to be service oriented and have proper knowledge of the product. Selling in the UHP segment, unlike any other segment, needs sound understanding of various attributes of the product, which can be suggested basis the end user’s driving habits/ requirements. This, along with ambient showroom display of the product, is what we look for while selecting the right partner. If you sell Vredestein tyres from your existing Apollo Zones, will it not dilute the brand? Apollo Zones and Super Zones

are our premium distribution outlets, which cater to the high end cars and SUVs; and, in my opinion, is the only distribution channel that aligns with the Vredestein brand. What is your plan to utilise your core expertise of your robust network for establishing the Vredestein brand in India? While the team is devising the communication strategy for Vredestein tyres in India, our target would be very clearly the business partners. We believe that these business partners are key to establishing the Vredestein brand in India. Do you think that a dedicated plant for Vredestein will help you to consolidate in the domestic market much quicker? Tyre manufacturing is very capital intensive. It does not make business sense to put up a separate facility for the Vredestein brand in India, and more so, when the numbers that we are looking at, is also very small. How do you manage the pricing of Vredestein tyres, especially when you are looking at bringing these products from overseas markets? As mentioned earlier, Vredestein brand is being introduced in the UHP segment, where the margins are much higher than other segments. We plan to continue importing these tyres, till the time, we have enough demand in the Indian market to look at manufacturing the Vredestein tyres in one of our facilities in India.

Honestly speaking, when you have scooters, motorcycles, rickshaws, trucks, buses and cars fighting for space on the eternally crumbling Indian roads, it’s best to drive an automatic and let the engine and the transmission do all the driving. All you got to do is to keep your eyes on the roads and enjoy while the horses drive you without a

sweat. I got a chance to drive the automatic new Honda City. Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) unlike a dual clutch transmission is not known for its sportiness. A CVT takes care of your wallet first (returns great fuel efficiency) and then lets you have fun with some gentle acceleration. The new CVT from Honda delivers fuel efficiency of around 18 kmpl. With a new stylish look, almost fluidic in nature, this car has everything a person looks for in a premium sedan. The company says that the all new Honda City expresses Honda’s new design concept “Exciting H Design” which will be applied to all future Honda global models. City is the first model in India to adopt this new design concept. Honda always puts the human at the centre, and at the core of our “Man-Maximum MachineMinimum” philosophy. styling concept of New City is referred to as Sleek Crossmotion characterised with a “low front face “, “airy bumper design” and “advance and high class solid wing face”. The front design gets further accentuated with the smart “four head lamps”. The clear cut side panel and a powerful looking fender adds to the side charms. The rear design too is appealing, especially with the stylish rear lamps.

There is also an ECON button on the City that helps the

Also, while the width of the car stays same at 1,695mm, the shoulder room has been increased by 40mm. The front head clearance is improved by

10mm and the overall height of the new City has been increased by 10mm. The knee room is up by 70mm and the rear legroom improved by 60mm. For those who love moving with a tons of luggage, there is good news. The total capacity of under and above floor in trunk room has been secured at 510 litre. ENGINE This innovative Honda Original CVT was developed as “Earth Dreams Technology” and has been carried in City. High tension belt, CVT fluid, and efficient oil pump are newly developed based on the technology of the conventional CVT. Highly precise cooperative control “G-design Shift” with DBW delivers fun to drive performance. MOTOWN INDIA SUPPLEMENT

Honda is betting big on this transmission, especially with its new fluid. Except for that sound emanating from the engine as if it is trying to tell you that it’s getting into the next gear, the CVT performance is smooth. Knowing the three generations of Honda City charm, I can bet this one’s too going to be a rage among the achievers! JANUARY 2014 / 35

he executive saloon segment is similar to a symphony orchestra. Each one of them is a maestro. You just cannot find a flaw with any player. The only way to keep playing here is to constantly better oneself through the years. Among all these, XF, A6, 5 Series and E-Class, the sporty Bimmer went for practise and came back with more zest. The new avatar will be available with the M Sport tuning making it a more attractive buy. Looking at this gentleman everybody would say it is the same guys who sits and plays here. But no, look carefully and you notice the subtle changes. The front bumper has been changed and the adaptive headlamps now are sharper making the front look more rakish. The front now actually looks like its mental big brother, the M5. The stunning 18-inch lightweight alloy wheels have five spokes which are all split in two. The wheels get M badges on them and so do the front fenders. The rear too has been changed and is sportier rather than the previous versions elegant lines. The twin exhaust comes in black colour now. Open the door and you again notice the big M adorning the door sills reminding you the car’s sport pedigree. The interior is the definition of the perfect blend of form as well as function. What you get are simple clean lines with a combination of high quality wood and leather and carefully placed brushed aluminium inserts. The centre has a large 10 inch TFT display providing you all the information you need, maybe more than you need

actually. The instrument cluster is actually a 10.25 inch TFT screen which displays variable graphics according to the drive mode selected. Comfort mode displays the standard dials, while in Eco Pro mode the revcounter changes to an efficiency gauge. Selecting the Sport and Sport+ mode magnifies the display and turns the cluster red. The steering wheel is new and trimmer than before. Other niceties include steering mounted paddle shifters and a heads-up display. The seats are supportive for enthusiastic driving and very comfortable as well. The i-Drive controller is now bigger and features a touchpad for ease. However we think it is a bit too much as you do not actually need it, the knob is plenty easy to use. Quality is simply top notch and the fit and finish as expected is flawless. The rear cabin is well appointed as well. Two 9 inch entertainment 38 / JANUARY 2014

displays indulge the passengers in the brilliant Harman Kardon Surround system. What the big Bimmer packs under the bonnet is real witchcraft. Makes you wonder that with such a tower of power how can this 3.0 litre turbocharged diesel return nearly 12kmpl. Performance is just exhilarating for a 1.8 tonne

vehicle with four doors. Naught to 100kmph is possible in just under 6 seconds, and the 530d keeps accelerating to 250kmph till it runs into the electronic buffers. The 8-speed automatic transmission is electric to use and provides instant shifts. The gearbox now also features a coasting function, which essentially disconnects the

engine while the vehicle is in Eco Pro mode and sailing freely without the accelerator. Handling is the forte of BMW. This is where a BMW just plain excels ahead of its competition. The M Sport tuning has made the 530d’s handling precise and planted. In comfort mode, the Bimmer is plaint and very composed. The only bit where the 530d M Sport lags is when you select Sport mode and really have red mist on. Do not get us wrong, it is not at all disappointing, but there is something missing that makes BMWs so special. The driver does not feel very connected to the car. The steering does react to the slightest inputs, but in a vague and eccentric manner, away from how a traditional BMW should act. Putting the car in Sport mode does stiffen up the characteristics, but we suspect the 530d is a bit heavy on its slightly soft suspension. But then not many people want MOTOWN INDIA SUPPLEMENT

to push the boundaries, and there not many places you can. What you deal with everyday are traffic and potholes. The electronic steering has made life very easy in traffic conditions or difficult parking manoeuvres. And the soft suspension takes care of the comfort of the occupants. This car is very nearly perfect for what it does. Purists will

disagree and comment that it does not deserve the M Badge. But whether it does or not is a matter of perspective. It is a four-door saloon which happens to be a very capable and efficient mile muncher, can occupy four people in comfort and gobble up all their luggage, and at the touch of a button transforms into a fun driving machine! olkswagen’s replacement for displacement is in the form of their TSI engine technology. The theory implies downsizing engine capacity and adding a turbocharger would return efficient burning of petrol and more power. The mantra started with the 1.4 TSI engine launched back in 2006. Then the 1.8 and 2.0 litre units followed. And now the newest iteration is the 1.2 TSI which made its debut in the recent Polo GT TSI. We were amazed how good this hot little hatchback is. And now, Volkswagen has decided to equip the fantastic 1.2 TSI unit in the Vento saloon. Not only does the Vento get the TSI engine technology, but also comes equipped with the flawless 7-speed DSG gearbox. Adding these two together translates into an efficient, technically advanced and powerful mid-size saloon which makes the office run supremely comfortable and easy, and can be used for full bore pedal-to-themetal weekends laps on the Buddh International Circuit (BIC). And speaking of BIC, here we are for a few cheeky laps with the new Vento 1.2 TSI. The regular Vento is powered

MOTOWN INDIA SUPPLEMENT

JANUARY 2014 / 41

WHEELZ & ROADZ by a 1.6 litre petrol or diesel engine. This one gets a 1.2 litre turbocharged direct injection petrol unit, which does not sound much but does produce 103 ponies. Thanks to the turbocharger the 1.2 litre engine produces as much power as the standard 1.6 litre, and more torque. This same engine works wonders for the

The second most important reason for this turn of speed is that super quick 7-speed DSG transmission. The earlier automatic variant of the standard Vento petrol was a yawning slow 6-speed transmission. This one is a superfast dual-shift gearbox which makes the earlier one look archaic. Where the 1.6

does, but the sensation it gives makes up for that. The engine is silky smooth and even sounds nice when you give it the beans. The top speed hovers near the 160kmph mark on the gauge, which is plenty for our roads. The transmission in ‘D’ is apt for everyday use. The shifts are quick and optimised for efficient driving. However, when the

Polo GT TSI, making it one of the most exciting hatchbacks in the country. You might wonder that the combination of this engine and weight of the Vento would spoil the fun. But you’d be wrong. The Vento TSI is absolutely fun to drive. The acceleration lags a tiny bit behind the little Polo but is still very impressive.

automatic took more than 16 seconds to reach 100kmph, the Vento TSI will sprint in just about 11 seconds. This acceleration number might be a second slower than the Polo, but then here is where the weight kicks in, and do not forget the Vento is more car for your money. The Vento TSI will not pin you back in your seat as the diesel variant

mood takes you fancy shift in ‘S’ for more response and delayed shifts till the 6000rpm redline. The 7-speed DSG also gives you some control over the shifts by putting in manual, but frankly you will not need much of that. The paddle-shifts work best for this purpose, or if you have a bigger engine, both of which are not present on the Vento TSI.

The ride quality is brilliant and so is the high speed stability. The steering is straight and true. It does not communicate much to the driver but is precise and easy. You can chuck it into a corner at not-legal speeds, and you exit out of it on the line that you decided. Being front wheel MOTOWN INDIA SUPPLEMENT

drive the understeer does kick in, but way past the limits of talent or lunacy. True enthusiasts might want to look in the tyre department to extract more speed. The TSI engine and DSG gearbox have made the Vento a very attractive buy. It is extremely easy for everybody, fun to drive, light on your wallet and

probably the most technically advanced mid-size sedan in the segment. We could not test the fuel efficiency but expect it upwards of 11-12kmpl. The only thing that angers me is why Volkswagen not put the 1.4 TSI engine in it. That would have truly transformed the Vento from an attractive buy to an irresistible buy. JANUARY 2014 / 43

ver since its inception in 2003, Toyota has placed 4.3lakh Innova MPV’s on Indian roads transporting families, employees, children and their cargo for business as well as leisure. Such is the impact of this vehicle that whenever you plan a trip, Toyota Innova is the first taxi you think about. In fact in some cases you cancel your taxi provider if he cannot arrange an Innova. It is a fantastic multi-purpose vehicle transforming long journeys comfortable and joyous with family and friends. So strong was the product from the beginning that Toyota barely made any changes to the Innova. However after such long years of service and the changing market demands, Innova had to freshen up to keep the buyers attracted. Toyota has given the new one minor improvement both on the inside and outside. The front grille has been changed entirely. It is

46 / JANUARY 2014

bigger and sinks further lower down the face with chrome detailed horizontal slats. The bonnet too gets redesigned creases looking more modern. The front bumper has been changed for a sharp and rakish appeal with new fog lamps neatly tucked enveloped in chrome again. Notice the new graphics on the side of the vehicle, are only available on the top ‘Z’ variant. They look okay but best just avoid them. The side rail running

low on the side profile get a splash of chrome and run a bit lower than the previous models, probably for a sportier stance. A fat chrome strip runs through the middle of the rear tailgate and the rear tail lights also get a slight bit of rework. But apart from the splashing of chrome and tiny changes here and there, not much has changed. And frankly there is not much need to change the Innova until a completely new model arrives next year.

MOTOWN INDIA SUPPLEMENT

WHEELZ & ROADZ The interior has been designed as well. More goodies to be found here, new finish and new seat covers. Our test variant had everything you need like USB, AUX-in, Bluetooth connectivity and automatic Climate control. The built quality is as solid as a tank. The fit and finish is well put together and expect less squeaks and rattles even after years of service. The media system gets a touch screen interface sitting in the middle of the dashboard, which also doubles up as a reversing camera. The Corolla sourced steering has mounted controls for added convenience to the driver. Apart from the visual changes, the rest of the vehicle is essentially the same. The engine is a 2.5 litre common rail turbocharged diesel unit pushing a hundred ponies and sufficient

torque for most purposes. The gear ratios are short, good for everyday traffic use but insufficient for highway cruising. You do feel a need for a sixth cog or taller gears to silence the engine. Although the throws on the gear stick are long and annoying. The Innova handles nicely for a vehicle of this size. It feels easy and very car like in terms of driving dynamics. The ride quality is excellent and body roll well tamed. Long journeys are comfortable even for the third row of passengers. The tiny upgrades on the new Innova add up to add more favours for this mile muncher, but also to the price. Other competitive products are priced substantially lower, but lack on built, space and comfort. Another advantage is the fantastic fuel efficiency that it returns. Expect an acceptable 12kmpl efficiency figure from the 2.5 litre engine. The Innova is spacious, quiet efficient, built strong and the way we see it, justifying its higher price tag against the competition. It still rules the roost in the MPV segment as the most satisfying choice for a people carrier.
