ust when we thought the roads in India are choc a block with cars and bikes, comes the news that Kia Motors from South Korea is going to invest Rs 7000 crore + in Andhra Pradesh to make compact sedans and SUVs for the Indian market. Kia Motors is part of the Hyundai Motor Group. We have a report announcing Kia’s investment plans in India. In the Wheelz & Roadz section of our magazine we have drive reports on the Volvo S60 Polestar, the new Ford Figo Sports edition and two bikes from the Triumph Bonneville family—the Street Twin and the T100. In the B2B section we have a report on the Sonalika tractor plant in Hoshiarpur, Punjab. The plant is the world’s largest integrated tractor plant in the world while group company International Tractors Ltd is the third largest tractor company in India. But what is equally interesting is the fact that we spotted the world car made by Sonalika in collaboration with Italian design house Pininfarina. The car was made by Sonalika group company International Cars & Motors Ltd (ICML) along with Pininfarina. Though it was developed it never saw the light of day as the company got out of its car making business. That makes Motown India the first media entity in the world to have spotted this beautiful car!

Motown India EXCLUSIVE

Sonalika Pininfarina WORLD CAR finally spotted Report: P.Tharyan | Photography: Afsar Baig Motown India is the first media entity in the world to have finally spotted the International Cars and Motors Ltd (ICML) - Pininfarina premium world car that goes by the name of “EVO”. By the looks of it, the car is very SUV like and has got a very contemporary styling. The car must have been made more than five years back. Unfortunately, the car never saw the light of day and ICML is today almost relegated to the pages of history. With the ICML logo in front and back of the vehicle, the car was spotted at Sonalika headquarters at Hoshiarpur in the state of Punjab in north India. The car is proudly parked along with Sonalika’s current range of tractors in an air conditioned hall. This Pininfarina car was supposed to have been launched in 2012 for a little above Rs 10 lakh. The five-seater vehicle

6 | MOTOWN INDIA | MAY 2017

has the word “Pininfarina” inscribed at the bottom of the left front door. With a five spoke alloy wheel, the car that must have been conceived almost seven or eight years back, is truly contemporary in every manner with a sloping roof and projector headlamps and fog lamps along with elegant swept back tail lamps. But going by the design and looks of the “EVO” car from ICML and Pininfarina (Pininfarina is now owned by India’s Mahindra & Mahindra), it is obvious that

the two companies had indeed made a car that was global in every which way. Had the company’s car project taken off, the “Evo” could definitely have been a huge hit among the car buyers of that era. Those following the company closely know about the fact that it had brought out the Rhino multi utility vehicle (later rechristened “Extreme”) from its plant in Amb, Himachal Pradesh in north India. Around

2008, it was confirmed that the company had got into a tie up with Italian design house Pininfarina to make a world car that was targeted for sales all over the world. The late Andrea Pininfarina too had visited Sonalika’s Hoshiarpur plant in Punjab around 2007-08 to speak to the media about this development and this writer too had a chance to interact with him during that time. Unfortunately, Andrea Pininfarina died in 2008 in a freak accident while riding a Vespa near the company’s headquarters in Italy.

URUS SUV COULD QUADRUPLE LAMBORGHINI SALES IN INDIA Even though the total number of Lamborghini cars sold in India is very small, this could grow at a scorching pace once the Urus SUV is launched globally. But that would have to wait till 2018. In an exclusive interview with Motown India, Sharad Agarwal, Head, Lamborghini India stated that given the penchant of Indians for SUVs, the Urus could well have a multiplier effect on Lamborghini sales in India. In 2016, it is reported the entire super luxury car segment that comprises the likes of Lamborghini, Ferrari and Aston Martin put together sold around 70 cars of which

www.motownindia.com

Lamborghini alone sold close to 28 cars thereby grabbing a 40pc share of this segment. The company launched the Lamborghini Huracan Performante on April 7, 2017 in New Delhi and Agarwal told this correspondent that the quota for this model has almost sold out. Commenting on the Urus SUV, he said, “Yes, it is a very important model for us and it’s going to open a completely new segment of customers for Lamborghini. We are very excited about the prospects of the Urus in the Indian market. India is a market where there is more preference towards SUVs”. He said that “Though there are certain perceptions about the infrastructure we have in India, the Urus is going to be the perfect product for us. While globally we are talking that with Urus, Lamborghini is going to double its achievements over the 2015 sales, what we anticipate in India is that the multiplier effect could be 2X or 3X and given the kind of response we are already getting from our customers it could very well go up to 4X. That is the level of growth this model can bring to us.”

The Equalizer in Honda’s Combi Brake System distributes braking force proportionately between front and rear wheels simultaneously by pressing just the left lever. This results in reduced braking distance and improved balance. Powered by a 109cc Honda Eco Technology (HET) engine, the new Dio is now both AHO and BS-IV compliant.

UM MOTORCYCLES UNVEILS BS-IV COMPLIANT RANGE UM Lohia Two Wheelers Pvt. Ltd. unveiled their BS-IV complaint range of motorcycles which includes the Renegade Commando and the Renegade Sport S. Both motorcycles will get fuel injected engines which will comply to the new norms made mandatory by the government from April 1, 2017. The fuel injection technology will enable these UM motorcycles to produce higher and consistent power when compared to the previous variants. The company claims these engines have been designed specially to deliver better cold starts and will also produce less emissions. The bikes will also get a better throttle response in terms of accuracy.

he new Volvo S60 Polestar is a 362bhp road sheering monster which tears up the asphalt, going from 0-100kmph in just 4.7 seconds and draws its genes from Volvo’s performance division - Polestar. Volvo has launched the S60 Polestar which happens to be the fastest 2.0 litre, 4 cylinder entry level performance sedan in India. And to test its capability we were taken to the Kari Motor Speedway in Coimbatore! Incidentally this is also the first Polestar in India and undercuts the prices of all its competitors.

EXTERIOR DESIGN

The Volvo S60 sedan has always been a good looker. It carries sharp and elegant style cues which lend it a voguish appeal. The S60 Polestar brings more racy characteristics to the sedan. The front splitters have been redesigned to look sporty at the same time restrict the amount of airflow under the sedan. The

S60 Polestar also features skirting all around and gets a rear spoiler and diffuser which increase the down force, in turn aiding tyre grip and control over the sedan. Volvo has also added Polestar engineered rims which have been tested and developed at the Volvo wind tunnel to optimise airflow and provide an efficient braking performance irrespective of weather and road conditions. It also increases the airflow to the brake setup thus improving the braking endurance of the S60 Polestar. Other aesthetic changes to the exterior come in the form of the Polestar badges on the trunk and grille. The S60 Polestar is available in Rebel Blue and Onyx Black Metallic colours.

The cabin of the Volvo S60 Polestar oozes sporty performance and luxury. It carries distinct elements which are found on the S60 sedan but yet has its own identity thanks to additions made under the Polestar badge. Volvo has added Sport seats and a racy looking steering wheel which gets brushed aluminum finish and does have identical styling cues to the standard S60. Even the start up image has been tweaked to display the Polestar badge, while Volvo has made minor changes under the Polestar badge such as the door panels, centre stack, carpets, door sill molds, gear knob, gear knob stick cover, arm rest and sport pedals. The cabin feels premium and rich with an exquisite blend of materials adorning the spaces inside the sedan.

WHEELZ & ROADZ A driving experience PERFORMANCE

Unlike the previous versions 3.0 litre, 6 cylinder configurations, the new Volvo S60 Polestar gets a 2.0 litre, 4 pot, supercharged, turbocharged motor. Despite having a smaller engine capacity, power and torque figures have seen a jump over the previous version. The new 2.0L motor whips up an astonishing 362bhp at 6000rpm and a hefty 470Nm of torque from 3100 - 5100rpm. The Volvo S60 sedan is by no means linear in its mannerism, it is punchy and has a keen wit to catch you off guard. The gentlest of taps on the accelerator make this sedan lunge forward. The engine has been mated to an 8-Speed AWD automatic transmission. The AWD setup is marginally biased to the rear wheels ensuring a very sporty drive. Volvo has also added a gear hold function to the S60 Polestar, thus you can push the engine in a single gear, the way it would be in a manual transmission. The Volvo S60 Polestar also enables you to turn off most driver aides like stability control and traction control, there is minimal intrusion from these control systems thus making it truly a driver’s car. The chassis and suspension of the S60 Polestar has also been rigged to be on the stiffer side, rendering more control and feel to this vehicle. On track the S60 Polestar gets immense grip and control even with the various driver aides turned off. The steering as well is on the stiffer side and has a very sporty feel to it.

SAFETY & FEATURES

While the S60 Polestar gets kit like ABS, Advanced Stability Control and Dynamic Stability Traction Control. Amongst other safety features Volvo has

chosen the S60 Polestar to incorporate its Collision Warning with full auto brake and pedestrian detection system. Other radar based safety features that have been incorporated are Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Departure Warning, Blind Spot Detection with Cross Traffic Alert, City Safety and Park Pilot Assist.

VERDICT The Volvo S60 Polestar is much more affordable than its closest rival from the tri-star stable and is just a tad bit more powerful. The other big advantage it gets is the unparalleled safety features.

hen you get a car that’s got some design changes compared to its existing model but the car comes with the same engine which produces the same power and torque like the existing one, you simply put your head up and enjoy the drive. That’s what we did with the new Ford Figo Sports Edition in the Salt Flats in the Rann of Kutch in Gujarat under a burning sun with temperatures around the 43 deg C mark. For one, I can

at least vouch on the air-conditioner, it simply did not let us down.

EXTERIOR & INTERIOR DESIGN / FEATURES

It’s the looks that have got a sporty tweak in the Ford Figo Sports Edition. Ford India is just getting better at enhancing its sporty image with the beautiful Mustang being the icing on the Ford cake. Now with the launch of the sports edition of the Ford Figo, the company seems to be saying that

it is getting better at wooing the young at heart with looks and performance. The Ford Figo Sports Edition has a sporty grille, black inset on headlamp bezel and graphics on the sides and rear with the letter “S” displayed loud and clear. The all-new black honeycomb grille has brought alive the trademark trapezoidal grille in the Figo Sports Edition. The sporty stance of this vehicle is further accentuated by the dual-tone exterior with a black painted roof, all-new 15 inch black alloys and outside

Not to miss is the new rear spoiler, which adds to the style quotient as well as ensures smarter performance from the car.

PERFORMANCE

The new Ford Figo Sports edition comes with two engine options, a 1.2-litre Petrol and a 1.5 litre diesel. The sports edition only comes in the Titanium variant. We got our hands on the 1.5 litre diesel model. Speaking of performance, though the 1.5 litre engine remains the same and the power and torque generated are like in the other Figo models, yet the car with its tuned suspension and the bigger 15-inch alloy wheels opens up a new chapter in fun driving. The ride quality remains top notch. The engine belts out 99hp and around 215 Nm of peak torque. Though the car has got a wee bit heavier, fuel consumption has gone up a tad more while the

extra weight has done no harm in the car handling. The car continues to accelerate reasonably well, though an automatic transmission version too would have been an added choice for consumers. We drove the vehicle from the city of Ahmedabad to the splendid Salt Flats of the Rann of Kutch in Gujarat. The Flats are known for the salt that is produced here and of course the wild asses that roam freely in this region. The blazing sun did not bother us a wee bit as the powerful automatic climate control system ensured that the cabin was cool as a mini refrigerator. Talking of the cabin, the Figo sports edition has an all-black interior – from inner door handles to the centre console and not to miss are the red stitching running across the edges, giving it a very premium look. The steering is leather wrapped with red stitching on the inside. Coming back to the Salt Flats, how could we not resist from stepping on the gas pedal? Off it flew like a bird in flight and handled perfectly. With ABS and EBD at your beck and call, the Ford Figo Sports Edition is prompt when it comes to braking and handling. The electric power assisted steering is quite responsive too. The car is also equipped with dual front driver and passenger airbags.

VERDICT The Figo has always been a smart hatchback from the Ford India stable. Now with the sports edition, it’s not only got a lot sportier in its appearance but is a lot more fun to drive.

Roof rails with dark metal finish and the Stepway decals help in distinguishing this vehicle from the other MPVs running around town. The Lodgy Stepway is powered by the same 1.5 litre dCi engine found on the Duster. This diesel mill however comes with two options an 84 horse power variant and a 108 horse power variant. The latter has been mated to a 6-Speed manual transmission while the

84hp output engine has been mated to a 5-Speed variant. Both engine options are quite efficient, the more powerful variant returns 19.98kms to a litre while the other variant returns 21.04kms to a litre of diesel. The major difference between both engine options is the turbo charger. While the 84hp version gets a fixed geometry turbo the 108hp variant gets a variable geometry turbo. Both engines are peppy and spirited to drive even with all occupants seated inside. There is a cruise control function that gets a speed limiter as well. Along with ABS and EBD the company is also offering a Brake Assist feature on the new Renault Lodgy Stepway. Safety has been assured with driver and passenger airbags. Adequate cooling is provided in all three rows

thanks to 2nd and 3rd row smart sense AC. The 8-way adjustable driver seat is also a boon. The steering only gets a tilt adjustment and is not adjustable for reach. Features like electrically adjustable ORVMs, central locking with keyless entry, headlight turn on reminder and 12 Volt power sockets on each row are an added attraction. A gear shift indicator assists drivers in changing gears at the right time to deliver optimum fuel efficiency. The new Lodgy Stepway gets a versatile 7 inch media Navigation console which has connectivity options for USB, AUX and Bluetooth. Now with so many new features, we have got to see whether this new Lodgy Stepway is the right step forward for the company!

T

he world of motorcycle manufacturing is a tricky business when it comes to pleasing youngsters with varied tastes. But British motorcycle manufacturer Triumph Motorcycles has done a fabulous job doing a balancing act with the Triumph Bonneville Street Twin.

DESIGN & STYLING

The Street Twin carries forward the conventional character of a Bonneville and is lot modern in its appearance. A well sculpted muscular tank with knee dents and fat KYB forks upfront give the bike a retro touch. The Street Twin also gets twin shocks in the rear keeping it in line with the Bonnie heritage. The Street Twin I laid my hands on got the Triumph’s Scrambler kit installed to it which apparently added a lot more flair to an already modern

looking machine. The Scrambler kit features a Vance & Hines exhaust, chrome finished ORVMs, LED turn indicators and an icon scrambler seat. The Street Twin also features 5 twin spoke alloys which lends it a youthful and sporty character. A drawback we did observe with the Scrambler styled Vance & Hines exhaust is its high set position which would be a real challenge for the pillion rider. But then for all practical reasons, despite the exhaust perched so high on the bike, the heat dissipation does not get unnerving and nor does it burn a hold in your riding gear! The Street Twin is available in four colours -- Jet Black, Cranberry Red, Matt Black and Aluminum Silver, all of which add vogue to this machine.

PERFORMANCE

At the heart of the Street Twin is a 900cc, parallel twin, liquid cooled engine. The motor belts out 80Nm of peak torque at www.motownindia.com

MAY 2017 | MOTOWN INDIA | 27

WHEELZ & ROADZ A riding experience 3230rpm, the rider can surge forward with ease and thanks to a well fitted ride by wire system you are not jolted around but rather have a very smooth throttle response. The engine puts out its peak power of 54.2bhp at 5900rpm and mated to a 5-speed gearbox the power delivery is quite linear with a smooth climb

up the band. The Street Twin gobbles up the first two gears but the 3rd, 4th and 5th have longer legs which show their true potential on open stretches. During out tests we clocked the Street Twin’s 0-100kmph time at 7.07 seconds while it came down from 100-0kmph in just 5.72 seconds. We also clocked a top speed of 182kmph on the bike which definitely boasts of Triumph’s engineering capability. Triumph has also made many functional additions to this motorcycle which can truly liberate the rider. You get a switchable traction control which can be accessed through the switch gear on the handle bar. The Street Twin also comes with ABS which I realised is extremely efficient in its duties. The bike experiences brilliant stability and oozes lot of confidence while

braking at high speeds. This motorcycle is on the lighter side and is fun to ride. The nimble nature is good for city riding and can be real treat on winding roads. It lends the rider excellent balance and control while inspiring confidence to push harder. Triumph has slapped on a 310mm single disc upfront with a 2 pot caliper and a 255mm single disc in the rear again with a two pot caliper. The braking is progressive and sharp with just the right amount of feedback. The bike rides on 41mm KYB telescopic forks in the front and a conventional KYB twin shock with 120mm of travel in the rear. The suspension leans on the stiffer side but is quite adept at taking corners and glides over bad roads.

VERDICT The Street Twin is not one of those bikes which you would take to the track in leather overalls as it is not built for that purpose. But rather, I see it as a motorcycle in its purest form, carrying forward the genes of the icons of yore in a very contemporary manner. In short, it is the perfect blend of the old and the new!

The rider seat height has been set at 790mm and has an adequate sync with the foot pegs and handlebars to cater to comfortable cruising even on long journeys. The switch gear as well is quite easy to operate. Triumph has set an analogue speedometer and rpm gauge on the T100 which also gets a digital display for trip meters, average fuel consumption, current fuel consumption and average speed.

The acceleration is linear but extremely thrilling right from scratch. Thanks to a well engineered ride by wire setup throttle response is crisp and accurate leaving no room for jolts and jerks. The engine has been mated to a

5-Speed gearbox. Gear shifts on the bike are crisp and neat thus adding to the pleasure of riding this motorcycle. The motorcycle rides on 41mm telescopic forks in the front and twin shocks with an adjustable preload in the rear. Both the front and rear suspension get 120mm of travel and are quite adept at taking on bad and bumpy roads. The tyres lend adequate grip on tarmac and work well with the traction control setup the T100 to

provide a carefree ride. Braking on the T100 has been facilitated by a 310mm disc with a two pot caliper in the front and 255mm discs with a two pot caliper in the rear. The braking on this motorcycle is extremely efficient and inspires a lot of confidence to the rider. Coupled with traction control and ABS, the T100 just transforms into a splendid ride with a fine tuned capability of saving your neck in sticky situations.

VERDICT While there are quite a few retro styled motorcycles available in the market, the Triumph Bonneville T100 carries the distinct DNA of iconic British motorcycles. The T100 is easy to ride and quite nimble. Be it the city or the highway, this bike is adept at providing comfort. The parallel twin engine belts out a thrilling performance and the grunt from the peashooter exhausts add to the fun. It is essentially a fine blend of a retro styled motorcycle with modern day technology to aid riders in traversing varied terrain.

Marc Marquez gets first win in 2017 MotoGP season in Austin Marc Marquez of Repsol Honda Team finally got into the victory mode in the third race of the 2017 MotoGP held in Austin, Texas in the United States. The defending World Champion sped to an important and much-needed first win of the season at the Red Bull Grand Prix of the Americas after prevailing over teammate Dani Pedrosa, who eventually ended up in third after being overtaken at the death by new World Championship leader Valentino Rossi (Movistar Yamaha MotoGP). Three-time World Champion, Marquez, hadn’t been on the podium coming into the third race of 2017 having seen in-form Maverick Viñales dominate the opening two races. But going for the hat-trick, Viñales lost control and crashed out with 19 laps to go leaving the battle to commence between the two Repsol Honda riders. Marquez had started the race on pole only to see Pedrosa come flying up from fourth to take the lead at the end of lap one. It was neck and neck between them for much of the pulsating race, with the duo making moves and overtaking each other at every opportunity. Marquez eventually managed to get out in front though with 13 laps to go and built up a healthy lead which he never came close to relinquishing. Fourth place was the fight for the First Independent Rider position as Cal Crutchlow (LCR Honda) and Johann Zarco (Monster Yamaha Tech 3) both chased the spoils, with Crutchlow eventually getting the better of the rookie as the race concluded. Sixth position went to Andrea Dovizioso (Ducati Team), with Andrea Iannone (Team SUZUKI ECSTAR) in seventh. Danilo Petrucci (OCTO Pramac Ducati) took eighth, with Jorge Lorenzo (Ducati Team) and Jack Miller (EG 0,0 Marc VDS) rounding out the top-ten with ninth and tenth respectively.

Lewis Hamilton, the winner of the second race of the season had to be content with a second place here in Bahrain. Despite his late charge in the race, he could not prevent Vettel winning a a splendid victory for Ferrari. But Mercedes team had reason to smile as Hamilton’s teammate Valtteri Bottas took third position. For Force India’s drivers Sergio Perez and Esteban Ocon, it was good news as both came in the first ten standings and earned points. They finished seventh and tenth respectively. Vettel’s teammate Kimi Raikkonen came in fourth. Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo finished fifth while his team mate Max Verstappen retired early with brake failure. The last season in which four different teams won consecutive events was 1987. He grabbed the initiative on Saturday when Kris Meeke retired from the lead with engine problems and eased through today’s finale. Sébastien Ogier extended his championship lead to 13 points after passing Dani Sordo in the final test. Electrical problems slowed the Frenchman’s Ford Fiesta in the previous special stage to allow the Spaniard ahead, but he overturned a 2.5sec deficit to prevail by 1.7sec. Dani Sordo made it a rally to celebrate for the Hyundai team, picking up his first podium of 2017 with an assured drive to third place, missing out on second position by just 1.3-seconds. Amanpreet conquers the hills in JK Tyre Festival of Speed Former Indian National Rally Champion Amanpreet Ahulawalia emerged the winner of the three-day JK Tyre Arunachal Festival of Speed at the Dirang Valley in Arunachal Pradesh. The Noida-based veteran rallyist and his navigator Ajay Kumar were virtually unbeatable on each of the three days, conquering eight of the ten stages to pocket a major chunk out of the total prize money of Rs 10 lakh. On the third and final day too, he won the first three Special Stages before easing up on the last one. He finished all the stages, including the Super Special Stage on Day 1, in just over an hour to win with an impressive 27 second lead. Amanpreet, who owns one of the largest rally car workshops in India, gave all the credit to his 1300cc turbo charged Gypsy. “I worked on it for three months, and was managing to produce close to 150-odd bhp power that is pretty good for a Gypsy. I

guess that was the only good and best part of my car: the engine,” he said, flashing a triumphant smile. Coorg’s INRC regular KM Bopaiah went all out in his 1600cc Vento but still had to settle for the second place. He was barely 2 or 3 seconds off the leader in each of the stages, and even claimed the final stage, but the 28 second deficit over the first two days proved to be a bridge too far to cross. He finished all the stages in one hour and 29 seconds. “I gave it my all in the Special Stages. But I guess my car

was driving a stock car, and it was clear on the second day itself that it was struggling. “I knew I had a huge disadvantage. But I pushed myself and my car to our limits today as I firmly believe that that’s the only thing that counts, not where you finish,” he said. In the Autocross for local talent, Babit Lyngdoh continued his good run to win the last two sprints on the third day to become the local hero. They say that you should not judge a book by its cover. But boy of boy does the box pack of this motherboard look awesome. The all black material, reminiscent of the hardware inside, with the big Aorus hawk and name up-front shows that Gigabyte means business with this board. Apart from the board the box contains 4 SATA 6.0 cables, a sturdy dual SLI bridge, rear I/O panel which surprisingly had cushioning on the back, RGBW extension cable, a thick user manual and more. This ATX motherboard gets a black matte finish all around which is nicely complimented by the white and grey colour shields. I especially liked the chiseled out heatsink for the chipset complete with the Aorus branding. As indicated by the name this board comes with the Z270 Express chipset and towards the top you will find the LGA 1151 CPU socket that supports both 6th and 7th Gen Intel Core processors. Just on the right of that are the 4 dual channel DDR4 RAM slots that can support up to a total of 64GB of memory running at a 4000MHz. Coming to the list of connectors at the back, you get 5 x USB 3.1 Gen 1 ports, 1 x USB 3.1 Gen 2 port, 1 x USB 3.1 Type-C with support for Intel’s Thunderbolt technology for super fast transfer rates of up to 40GB/s, a single PS2 port, 1 x Display port, 1 x HDMI port, 2 x LAN connectors and 5 audio jacks. There is a total of 8 fan headers on the board to connect enough cooling solutions to keep your rig running at cool temperatures. Apart from the USB ports in the rear, there are two USB 3.0 headers which can be used for connecting to the front ports of your PC case. You get plenty of storage options thanks to 6 x SATA 6.0 ports, a U.2 port and 2 x M.2 ports which support Intel Optane memory. The lower left half of the board has 3 x PCI-E 3.0x16 ports and 3 x PCI-E 1.0 ports. One thing to appreciate is that all the PCI-E 3.0 and RAM slots are reinforced which is good news for gamers that own graphics cards heavy enough to crush a small kid under their weight. The RGBW LEDs spread across the board are simply gorgeous. You can change the colour that they emit, you can cycle between the various modes and even switch the lights off completely (but where is the fun in that?). There are

36 | MOTOWN INDIA | MAY 2017

also options to change the lighting behavior for some selected areas of the board. You can control all of this on your desktop by using the Aorus RGB Fusion app or by diving into the motherboard’s BIOS. The BIOS interface itself looks neat and is mostly easy to navigate around. If you have or plan to have RGB strips for your case then you can connect those to the RGB header found on the board and control them via the RGB Fusion app. What is more thrilling is the fact that Gigabyte has been rolling out news of RGB Fusion supporting various products like the Corsair Vengeance RGB RAMs. This makes the RGB bait even more luring for PC enthusiasts that love to customise the look of their hardware. There are buttons on the board itself for power, ECO and OC. Overclocking on this board is actually pretty fantastic and it comes with Turbo B-clock. We could easily make our Intel Core i7 7700k run at a stable 4.7GHz. Same was the case while overclocking the RAM with XMP profiles. There is also a Debug LED panel that can save you a lot of time by displaying specific codes that correspond to specific hardware issues. The Gaming 7 also gets dual BIOS, meaning you can switch to a backup BIOS should something go terribly wrong with the first one. Creative SoundCore 3D takes care of the audio duties for this board and provides a rich experience be it while playing games, watching movies or listening to music. The whole audio interface is shielded to avoid any electrical noise from interfering with the sound. There is also a switch on the board itself that allows you to increase the audio gain. So what is my final take on the Aorus Z270X Gaming 7 motherboard? It is certainly a fantastic board that can do all that a gamer would want and even more. The smooth and stable overclocking experience that you get with this board is as good as the various controls you get over the RGB lighting. This board scores high in the looks department as well and all of this makes the board worth the money that you spend on it.

PC REVIEW TOM CLANCY’S GHOST RECON: WILDLANDS Vast lands sprawling with lush green forests, mountains that kiss the sky, beaches with shimmering clear water for miles and miles. While this might sound like the perfect holiday getaway, it is also a narcostate ruled by a ruthless and influential drug cartel. Welcome to Ghost Recon Wildlands’ Bolivia. Ubisoft’s latest open world offering boasts to be one of their biggest maps ever and you will realise it the moment you drop in the game and look around. But is this open world tactical shooter as grand as it looks?

GRAPHICS: The expansive geography of Bolivia makes you wander across, snow covered hills, tropical suburbs, beach side resorts, salt lake etc. The sheer amount of graphic options available to toggle or change in the menu, itself prove the amount of visual fidelity the game offers. Little details like how the night rain scatters light when it comes in front of a light source, the water colour changing as you come closer to land and the climate changes all add to making the game look spectacular. But that is not to say that there aren’t any rough spots here and there. The eyes of pedestrians and rebels look as if they would pop out of their heads at any moment, vehicles look flat and don’t get near as much detail as the main characters and the terrain.

first Assassin’s Creed game. You have an ‘X’ amount of bosses spread across the map and you must do ‘Y’ amount of tasks to get to them. Seems straightforward but Ubisoft has tried to make it as exciting as possible by giving different types of missions like planting bugs without being detected, stealing information or vehicles, scaring people and even framing some bosses. There is also a skill tree allowing you to make your character more competent as the game progresses. There are tons of side tasks to complete which reward things like extra information, or resources to increase your skills. It is not just you that gets upgrades, your weapons do too. Thankfully the missions do not have any additional objectives that need to be completed, thus you can approach missions as you please. Your friendly AI character behave well most of the time and in my playthrough I found them to be the perfect distraction/tanks while I completed the objective. Co-op mode on the other hand makes things more dynamic than they already are. With human error and stupidity added to the equation you get scenarios where serious missions can easily turn into comical massacres. One major issue I had with the missions was the amount of ease with which you can complete seemingly tough missions. Since the map is so big you do get a range of vehicles to traverse it. These include bikes, cars, choppers, boats, planes and even a tractor because why not! Saying that, the vehicles do not control as nicely as you would want but the airborne vehicles and boats handle well enough to save the day.

STORY:

VERDICT:

The story of the game is actually very simple. The state of Bolivia has been taken over by the Santa Blanca drug cartel led by El Sueno (a character that feels like it has come straight out of a Saints Row game) and the cartel has become so powerful that even the government does not want to mess with them. It is when these mobs torture and kill a DEA agent, the US government sends four of their best covert ops officers a.k.a Ghosts to replace the coke in the bodies of these baddies with lead.

All in all Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon: Wildlands offers a decent experience when it comes to single player campaign but shines when it comes to the flexible and fun co-op mode. The game in my opinion also has some replay value in it due to the freedom of playstyle you get. You could stealth your way through your first run and unleash hell on the Santa Blanca cartel during your second visit. So if you have a few friends ready to roll with you then you will have an explosive time in GRW’s Bolivia.

GAMEPLAY: At the start of the game you get to customize your character and there are a decent amount of options at available and I liked the fact that you can change your appearance anytime during the game through one of the menus. The start however can also feel overwhelming as the game throws a crate full of information at you in a very short span of time. It was only after playing for about 3-4 hours that I came to know and understand the various controls and mechanics of the game. The way you progress in Ghost Recon Wildlands reminded me of the

Motown India had reported in the past about Kia Motors plans to enter India. “We are delighted to announce that Kia’s newest manufacturing facility will be here in Andhra Pradesh,” said HanWoo Park, President of Kia Motors. “It will enable us to sell cars in the world’s fifth largest market, while providing greater flexibility for our global business. Worldwide demand for Kia cars is growing and this is our latest step towards becoming a leading global car manufacturer,” he said.

SALES TO COMMENCE END OF 2019

Kia plans to commence local sales of cars produced at the new facility towards the end of 2019, once mass production begins in Anantapur. Furthermore, the region’s fast-developing supply chain network and skilled labour force were other key reasons for the new investment by Kia Motors. India is the fastest growing major new car market and the fifth largest in the world, with more than 3.3 million new cars sold in 2016. Forecasts

SONALIKA sets eyes on high capacity utilisation of 300,000 units per annum tractor plant in Hoshiarpur International Tractors Ltd. to make tractors up to 180hp range Report: P.Tharyan | Photography: Afsar Baig

T

he Rs 6000 crore Lachhman Das Mittal and family controlled Sonalika group is on a major export drive to push global sales of its tractors, apart from consolidating its domestic sales, thereby aiming to fully utilise its total plant capacity of 3 lakh units per annum in Hoshiarpur, Punjab . According to the company’s new five-year plan, it is hopeful of exporting at least 50,000 units per annum alone to its equity partner Yanmar of Japan. Sonalika Group’s flagship company International Tractors Ltd manufactures tractors under the name Sonalika and Solis. While the family takes an active part in the day to day running of the company, with LD Mittal and his son Deepak Mittal operating out of Delhi, Amrit Sagar Mittal, Vice chairman of ITL and LD Mittal’s elder son operates out of Hoshiarpur. He is a hands on and focussed man when it comes to tractors. The Hoshiarpur plant of Sonalika is the world’s largest integrated tractor plant, while the company is the third largest manufacturer of tractors in the country. “We are currently exporting to around 80 countries...the whole of Africa, the whole of Europe, part of America, China and Russia ...Within five years we will be able to achieve in terms of sales all this number of 300,000 tractors (current plant capacity). Of this 50,000 will be exported by Yanmar to their different locations under

50 | MOTOWN INDIA | MAY 2017

their brand,” AS Mittal told Motown India in an exclusive interview. Mittal said the company plans to produce on an average 10,000 units of tractors per month at the Hoshiarpur plant beginning May 2017. In the financial year 2016-17 the company achieved all-time high sales of 81531 units with growth of 19.6pc over the previous year. Of this domestic sales stood at 69,290 units with an annual growth of 18pc over the previous year while exports increased significantly by 29.3 pc to 12,241pc. A fairly young company, International Tractors Ltd was set up in 1996. Its founder Lachhman Das Mittal had set up Sonalika Agro Industries Corporation way back in 1969 to support the Indian farmers with mechanisation technology. ITL today produces tractors between 20 HP to 120 HP. The new integrated tractor

manufacturing plant in Hoshiarpur has a capacity to manufacture approximately 2 lakh tractors. The old plant adjacent to the new one has a capacity of manufacturing 1 lakh tractors per annum. The company has strategic partnerships with Blackstone PE of Singapore and Yanmar of Japan. At the Hoshiarpur integrated tractor plant, the company makes its own sheet metal, transmissions, hydraulics, gear box and engines. Each tractor that is produced at the plant is tested for quality and build. From tractors as small as 20HP ones meant for orchard application to ones as big as 120HP Solis tractors are made at the plant here, which include both 4X4 and 4X2 tractors and some of them fitted with air conditioned cabins. The plant has its own press shop, heavy and light machine shops, an engine

#SONALIKA shop, an R&D centre, PT-CED & Robotic paint shop and a new assembly plant. AS Mittal said that as per the company’s five year plan, ITL will be selling around 50,000 units of tractors to Yanmar which in turn would be sold by Yanmar to its customers worldwide while the remaining would be sold through ITL to its own markets. Capacity utilisation of its 3 lakh capacity plant too would go up significantly in the next few years. Larger tractors with capacities as high as 180hp would also be manufactured by the company, he added. “In India, tractors up to 60 hp constitute almost 99pc of tractor sales. Earlier, it was as low as 35hp to 45hp. But in the export markets there is a lot of demand for not only the 20HP tractors that are meant for orchard applications but also higher HP tractors. We produced tractors upto 120 hp but will soon be making tractors up 180HP,” Mittal said. Uttar Pradesh is the largest consumer of Sonalika tractors. ITL sells tractors under the Sonalika and Solis brands, the latter meant exclusively for exports. “When we talk of those customers (global) and when we talk of higher HP tractors, tractors of 100HP or tractors of 120HP, the cost is equivalent to a Mercedes C class,” heinformed. With the Mittal family now putting all their efforts into Sonalika tractors, it is just a matter of time before their ‘Make in India” efforts see a speedy growth for their tractor business and an almost full capacity utilisation of their Hoshiarpur plant.

BOSSMAN SPEAKS

SHARAD AGARWAL Head, Lamborghini India Report : P. THARYAN How is your company doing with such supercars with super expensive price tags? It’s been a good run for us in India till now. Lamborghini is the market leader in the super sports cars segment in India. The segment has not grown to its full potential in the last few years in India. In fact it was declining from 2011 to 2014. In 2015 we saw marginal growth coming in. But 2016 was good and we saw a healthy double digit coming back. We have also been growing consistently over the years. While the segment sales were declining, Lamborghini was growing and maintaining its leadership position. I think it has been a very exciting journey so far. What is more important for us is the trends we are witnessing in the industry. I think India is going through a very important phase. Earlier we used to see that the demand for these cars were concentrated in the metros. Now we see more and more demand coming from tier 2 and tier 3 cities. Also, earlier we used to see the second and third generation entrepreneurs coming and buying our cars, but today we see young first generation entrepreneurs coming and buying Lamborghini cars. They have travelled across the world and have 52 | MOTOWN INDIA | MAY 2017

had an aspiration to buy a Lamborghini one day. The conversion cycles are getting shorter. In 2016 we saw the first lady buying a Lamborghini car in India. These are very exciting trends for us. That is why India is a strategic market for future growth and volumes for us. Can you name a few tier 2 and tier 3 cities where Lamborghinis have been sold? We can talk about Ludhiana, Bhubaneswar, Coimbatore, Jaipur, Surat, Kochi, Lucknow,

cars, we also organise a lot of track events. We have international platforms like the Lamborghini Academia and Esperienza where we bring the customers to a race track environment where we have our expert drivers who train the drivers how they can drive their cars better and even experience their cars better. We try to hone their skills further for them to experience the capability of a Lamborghini car on the track. We have done this programme in India and we plan to do this again this year.

rear-wheel fun to drive. The emotional experience one gets in driving these cars is different. Similarly we have the Spyders in both the versions. These not only give the customers the experience of performance but also open top motoring. How do you see the demand for the Huracan Performante which you have now launched? There are many takers for this vehicle and we are almost sold out for the year allocation. We are now looking

Lamborghini is not only about driving a car but also about the emotional experience they get when they drive a Lamborghini car. And that is how the entire technology of the car has been designed—the way the car accelerates, the way it brakes, the way it handles, etc.” etc. These are the cities from where people have been coming and buying these cars. What about your customers experiencing these superfast cars on our roads? I am not sure if you can feel the power of the car on our roads in terms of speed. These cars have a lot of emotional dimensions to the driving elements. That is what the people enjoy when driving these vehicles. But for our customers to really explore and experience their

Lamborghini is not only about driving a car but also about the emotional experience they get when they drive a Lamborghini car. And that is how the entire technology of the car has been designed—the way the car accelerates, the way it brakes, the way it handles, etc. For example, in the Huracan family, we have various models. We have a Huracan all-wheel drive which is an absolute performance car on the road and on the track, then we have a Huracan rear-wheel drive which is a performance car with a

as to how do we get our slots of production from our headquarters so as to meet the demand for the car in India. Our production plan is not unlimited production of these cars. As a manufacturer we want to manufacture one car less than the demand. It helps us to keep our brand very exclusive. There is an allocation given to every market. When we see higher demand for certain models coming in, we put in a request from headquarters to get more allocation for that particular model. If it is possible within their www.motownindia.com

#LAMBORGHINI framework, we do sometimes get it, but it is not always given. With such low ground clearance, how do Lamborghini cars manage to be driven around India’s bad roads? While these cars look very low in terms of ground clearance, these cars also come with a very good option which we call the lifting system in the car. That lifting system takes the ground clearance of the car from 135mm to 175mm. This 175mm is as good as any car a customer uses for his everyday use. There is absolutely no kind of limitation when it comes to driving these cars on Indian roads. We also took this car to the highest motorable road in Khardungla to showcase the capability of this car on any kind of roads. Lamborghini also revealed a concept SUV, the Urus which is expected to be out this year. Will this car see a huge demand in India? Yes, it is a very important model for us and its going to open a completely new segment of customers for Lamborghini. We are very excited about the prospects of the Urus in the Indian market. India is a market where there is more preference towards SUVs. Though there are certain perceptions about the infrastructure we have in India, Urus is going to be the perfect product for us. While globally we are talking that with Urus, Lamborghini is going to double its achievements over the 2015 sales, what we anticipate in India is that the multiplier effect could be 2X or 3X and given the kind of response we are already getting from our customers it could very well go up to 4X. That is the level of growth this model can bring to us. www.motownindia.com

INTERVIEW

KEVIN FLYNN President & MD, FCA India Report : P. THARYAN Since you will be manufacturing the Jeep Compass in India, besides countries like Mexico, Brazil and China, does it mean you will be expecting large volumes for this product? KEVIN FLYNN (KF): The exciting thing about this product is the fact that we are part of a global programme. The interesting thing is that this is not a car that was developed for India and that we are looking at opportunities to export it elsewhere. This is a global car built to global standards. There is consistency across the different manufacturing plants around the world. Our responsibility to the world would be the right hand drive markets. So we shall be manufacturing this car for consumption in India but also very developed right hand markets. This is great news for India because it means Indian consumers are not getting a car that is engineered for India, they are getting a global car which is part of the global programme. The car is phenomenal. It exceeds our expectations and it will really appeal to the Indian consumer and the real credibility is that we shall be exporting it to very developed markets across the globe. Can you tell us bit about the Ranjangaon plant where the Jeep Compass is being manufactured since it is 50.50 jointly owned by Fiat and Tata Motors? GURPRATAP BOPARAI (GB): It is absolutely one of the finest automobile plants that is there in India and also globally. I say this with a lot of confidence because we have had a lot of visitors from abroad who have seen some of the best facilities globally and they rate this as one of the best. Having said that we have done a lot of investment in this facility for this product and we set up a new body shop, we have upgraded our assembly line, we have upgraded our paint shop and we are ready now to make world class products. That’s not to say that our current products are not world class. The investment have been made by the joint venture partners. When it comes to the Jeep Compass, would it have its own dedicated assembly line or would it be made along with the other products being made which includes that of Fiat and Tata? GB: We have a common assembly line that will continue to manufacture multiple products. Having a dedicated assembly is not an efficient way of doing things. The plant has a 54 | MOTOWN INDIA | MAY 2017

capacity to make 160,000 units per annum. We are currently at 40pc utilisation levels. The Jeep Compass will be powered by a 1.4 litre petrol engine and a 2 litre diesel engine. Are these engines going to be made here at this plant? GB: The diesel engine will be made here at the plant. KF: We have obviously got powertrains that are important for Indian application that are going to fit very well with what the consumers are looking for in the Indian market. But obviously we will be exporting and we need to accommodate those external markets as well. The nice thing about this product is that we have got a nice portfolio of componentry within the plant which is also going to allow us to move the whole project forward and dig into a broader option list. This car is a real key piece in Jeep’s global growth. We are going live; Brazil has gone live, we have the other markets going live, so it’s a global onslaught in some respect. Still early days but I have got to say the integrity of the car, the depth of the car, the way the whole thing has been put together is that it is a capable car. I think the appeal is going to be huge. We are going to see significant growth of the Jeep Compass in all the markets. India continues to be a price sensitive market and prices can only be contained if there is a huge level of localisation. Has that happened? KF: We have worked hard on that and undoubtedly that has helped us. We maximised whatever opportunities were available within the Indian capabilities. I think this project for us is a huge accolade for Indian manufacturing. It is also a huge accolade for us as part of FCA organisation. We have been entrusted with right hand drive production of the cars. Locally we understand the pricing sensitivity; I believe we have got it right. I think the package we have put together and where we will be positioning the car, I think it will meet with real appeal to the Indian consumer. With the Jeep Compass, does it mean that Jeep as a brand will see the making of a lot more affordable vehicle? I am assuming here that the Compass will also be priced very affordable? www.motownindia.com

INTERVIEW ...We have done a lot of investment in this facility for this product and we set up a new body shop, we have upgraded our assembly line, we have upgraded our paint shop and we are ready now to make world class products.” - GURPRATAP BOPARAI KF: We made it clear when we came in with the CBU, we understood that with the duty imposed on them of around 180pc, we knew these cars would be brand leaders. That’s not where the bulk is going to be. It was always about bringing a local product. The beauty is that it is not a car we developed for the Indian market, it’s a global car and that is where the credibility of Jeep is coming through. It is a 75-year-old iconic brand that we have now brought to India and part of that process is a locally manufactured car to global standards. I believe that we can have the price right; I think we can make Jeep attainable by this market and we are going to find ourselves a position with great appeal and great positioning.

56 | MOTOWN INDIA | MAY 2017

Both Fiat and Jeep are two strong brands. Fiat has been struggling in India for quite some time though it’s a brand everybody recalls very fast, and now with Jeep coming in does it mean the focus shifts there or does it mean you will be taking the family together? KF: There are two elements to it. The chapter today and in a new book is the Jeep. But that does not take anything away from us what we are with Fiat. Undoubtedly the positive element in what we are doing preparing ourselves in getting ready with Jeep will have a very positive effect on Fiat. Jeep will put a very positive spin on what we are and how we are seen in this country.

BILL ZHENG Head of Design, FCA, APAC

JAMES LYIJYNEN Report : P. THARYAN

With the Jeep Compass, FCA has raised the bar on several fronts. Can you give some details? James Lyijynen (JL): Jeep Compass is a car we commonly refer to as “There no compromise with the Compass”. There is a level of refinement outside as well as inside the car. The car has been refined for both off-road as well as on-road. The feature content and materials are not consistent with those found in competitive medium size SUV segment. We are raising the bar at Jeep with the Compass, because we believe we have the right product in every way and this is a market that is continuing to grow around the world. I know it is growing in India. I think we are hitting the market at the right time with the right product. Bill Zheng (BZ): There’s a lot of design research and design clinic that were involved within various regions. This vehicle was localised in four different regions. Within every region, other than manufacturing, we communicated with the market, the planning team, with various functions to gather all the information and intelligence to put into this mid-sized SUV to make sure that we www.motownindia.com

Chief Program Engineer, Jeep Compass, FCA Global

understand the wants and needs from the customer base within these regions. We were not just designing it for America, but for the whole world. We had that mindset in place when we were designing this vehicle inside out. Can you throw some light on the small wide architecture that was kept in mind while making this product? JL: The small wide architecture is just the name of the architecture. What is very common in the automotive industry is to be able to design a flexible architecture, a scalable architecture that can spawn multiple vehicles. This is an architecture that has been used for a couple of other vehicles globally. It was the right architecture to be used for this size of vehicle. This architecture was a very important foundation for this vehicle. The Jeep Compass that we are now talking about is more than just this architecture. We are excited about everything that it delivers. Globally the other products that are on the same architecture are the Jeep Renegade MAY 2017 | MOTOWN INDIA | 57

INTERVIEW and the 500X from Fiat. Those are couple of other products that are designed, developed and sold in similar markets. As Bill said, neither has the global reach that the Jeep Compass does. The Jeep Compass has been designed in a manner that allows us to provide consistent formula but they also individualise or personalise for the local markets. The Jeep Compass has been industrialised in four assembly plants in four different regions. This vehicle also talks about two advanced 4X4 systems. Does that make the Jeep Compass a very versatile SUV? JL: Yes, it is a versatile SUV. The Active Drive System is a 4X4 system that we will use here in India and it is a 4X4 system that leverages the drive linedisconnect technology that allows us to seamlessly and automatically disconnect the rear axle so that the car can function in the 4X2 front wheel drive mode. This will improve fuel economy and at the same point of time when the traction is needed in the rear axle the driveline reconnects the rear differential module at the back and the unit at the front and allows all available torque to go to whatever wheel needs it. This is a system that provides a 4X4 capability that is synonymous with the Jeep name. There are four different modes in the Active Drive system. The Auto mode is where most people will do their driving. It is a mode which allows the vehicle do to the job for the customer. When the tyres sense slip, then it adjusts the traction and torque to the appropriate tyres. It is a very intelligent system. There are three other modes, the Snow Mode, the Sand Mode and the Mud Mode. These are all specifically designed to leverage the torque in the ways that are consistent with what is needed in those terrains. The Jeep Compass will be made in four places—Mexico, Brazil, China and India. Will there be any specific changes in the different regions in the vehicle? BZ: The Jeep Compass will have one universal look. There are some very minor adaptations. For example, for the APAC region, China and India, there is a specific Ski grade colour palette that is has been designed for this region. But overall if you look at the geometry of the exterior and the interior, majority of the finish is

58 | MOTOWN INDIA | MAY 2017

of global standard. The vehicle that will be produced in India will be exported to several APAC markets such as Japan, Australia, Korea, etc. What we want to do is to have the customers across the globe to experience the same product. In order to satisfy Indian consumers, what was the work you did when it came to making the new Jeep Compass? BZ: The headquarter design studio team along with global product planning team were closely working with the Indian team and getting constant feedbacks on the Indian market. What is your take on SUV as a vehicle, are these popular the world over? BZ: My personal projection is that in the future there would be 50pc SUVs and 50pc sedans. One advantage that we have is that the Jeep brand is the one that invented SUV way back in 1942. That is one thing we shall capitalise and continue to evolve. There is also a Jeep design DNA that we strictly follow and which is the seven slat grill, the trapezoidal wheel arch, etc which are specific to our Jeep vehicle and DNA and that will continue to evolve. Assuming that the Jeep Compass will be rightly priced in India, can you give me a few reasons why the customer will buy the vehicle here in India? JL: I believe that there is a level of refinement, on road and off road, also the elegant styling both outside and inside, it is a car that has no excuses. We have spent a lot of time in its development to make sure that the car uses the right materials in the areas that the customer appreciates it. We have done a lot of testing and development work in India to make sure the ride and comfort is consistent with the road inputs that you see here. We have made sure the suspension and the chassis system is consistent with the expectations of the Indian customers. We are really pleased with the results that we have seen. BZ: I know there are a lot of different competitors and variety to be offered to a customer in India, but with the Jeep brand we are bringing something new but it is also timeless.

GM India is owned by a 50:50 joint venture based out of Honkong in which General Motors and SAIC (Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation) Motor Corporation are equal partners. The going for GM India has been tough in the Indian passenger car industry. For the fiscal ended March 31, 2017, the company sold a mere 25,823 units inthe domestic

market, a drop of 20.64 pc compared to the previous year. But on the export front the company has done remarkably well, selling 70,969 units in 2016-17 thereby registering an 88.63pc growth, according to data tabulated by SIAM. GM India President and

Managing Director Kaher Kazem said all GM manufacturing in India will now be at the company’s Talegaon facility. “The consolidation of manufacturing at our Talegaon facility is an important milestone for GM India,” said Kazem. “That said, we are mindful of

the impact on our employees at Halol. We have committed to support them through this necessary transition with generous separation payments or the option of continuity of employment at Talegaon,” he added. Kazem said a range of additional support measures had been put in place for both the employees who opted for the significantly enhanced separation payments and those who will transfer, including tax and financial advice and pretransfer visits to Talegaon. “Since we first announced in 2015 that we would cease manufacturing at Halol, we have worked with all stakeholders to ensure a smooth transition,” said Kazem.

SUZUKI, TOSHIBA, DENSO to invest 1185cr in Li Ion battery plant in India While Tesla, the US based electric car maker which has its own lithium ion battery plant, is still to decide its India entry despite an open invitation from Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Japan’s Suzuki Motor Corporation, Toshiba Corporation and Denso Corporation have signed an agreement to establish a joint venture company for production of automotive lithium-ion battery packs in India. This could perhaps be the first major step towards seeing more car makers making electric cars in India. The joint venture company will be established within 2017 and shall move to manufacturing phase at earliest possible timing. The initial capital expenditure will be 20 billion Japanese yen (Rs 1185 crore approx.). The joint venture company will be capitalised at 2 billion Japanese yen, with the planned participation ratio of

www.motownindia.com

Suzuki 50%, Toshiba 40% and Denso 10% respectively. With the Supreme Court and the National Green Tribunal getting stricter on the environment front and taking steps to curb vehicular pollution, this agreement among Suzuki, Toshiba and Denso could pave the way for building non polluting electric cars in India. Currently, Mahindra & Mahindra is the only company that has been pushing the sale of electric cars in the country. The battery pack manufacturing joint venture by Suzuki Motor Corporation, Toshiba Corporation and Denso Corporation will realise stable supply of lithium-ion battery packs in India in the course of promoting sustainable cars in the country and will contribute to “Make in India” initiative by the Indian Government, a press note from Suzuki Motor Corporation said.

Roads that honk. Incredible India! World’s first anti-collision vehicle management system for India’s national highways by HP LUBRICANTS & LEO BURNETT INDIA

World over honking by motorists is considered rude behaviour. But when your road honks for you, it could actually save your life! Yes, you have read that correctly. HP Lubricants and Leo Burnett India have together innovated for the implementation of the world’s first anti-collision vehicle management system for India’s national highways. Roads that honk, or simply put #RoadsThatHonk is aimed at safer highways across Indian roads. It is a concept that adopts SmartLife poles which are erected near sharp curves and hairpin bends. These SmartLife poles employ advanced networked devices and combine wireless technology, radar systems, and an anti-collision warning system, all powered by solar PV modules. SmartLife poles are placed on each side of key hairpin bends. And we all know that driving around hairpin bends gets your adrenalin all flowing and you love the screeching of tyres and the feel of your vehicle cornering at high speeds. But what happens if you are not able to brake in time for an oncoming vehicle being driven at equally high speeds? A crash is inevitable and you are bound to go plunging down the hill side. This is where SmartLife poles play an important role. The poles detect speeds of oncoming vehicles, then communicate with each other to caution approaching vehicles on either sides with a horn. The innovation, that has been conceptualised, designed and executed by Leo Burnett India, was launched on NH1 in North India, along the Jammu-Srinagar Highway, a relatively deadly road to drive on. The functionality is achieved by transmitting an electromagnetic wave in 24 GHz frequency range (K-band), and measuring the frequency shift of the reflected electromagnetic wave. The frequency shift is caused by the Doppler effect of the moving target on the electromagnetic wave. As the relative speed between the radar sensor and the target increases, the detected frequency shift also increases, thus enabling the radar sensor to precisely determine the target speed. Maybe this could also work for a herd of animals coming from the opposite direction. The smart pole is a unique device created specifically to reduce the risk of accidents in hilly areas, funded and executed by HP Lubricants and Leo Burnett India. The aim is to observe the progress of the device and then further amplify the scale and magnitude of the project. India is a land of multiple terrains and there are several areas where the device is applicable and can save lives by reducing the risk of accidents. The Police department overseeing the 110 km of Jammu-Srinagar Highway belt has experienced over two-three vehicular incidents daily. Post the installation of the SmartLife pole, the department believes this number has reduced significantly. So next time when you see a sign behind a vehicle which says “Horn Please”, you do not really have to get carried away and honk. Let the roads do that for you! 60 | MOTOWN INDIA | MAY 2017
