together in the finest way possible. The star of our review section is the new Mercedes-Benz long wheel base E-Class. We drove this car in Goa and found that it offers pure indulgence. As for the Audi RS 7 Sportback Performance car, it’s a power packed vehicle that needs endless stretches of smooth roads. Hyundai also gave us the new facelifted Grand i10 which offers a whole host of new features. As for the Aprilia SR 150 Race we rode in Pune, this crossover two-wheeler is perhaps the prettiest and fastest little thing in its class. It’s the 75th year of the iconic Jeep and what better way than to pay tribute to it. Two soldiers who fought World War II recall their fond memories of the Jeep during the war that also found its way into the forests of North East India. The B2B cover story is on the Maruti Suzuki R&D facility in Rohtak in Haryana state. I was among a few journalists invited by Maruti to see the facility. The centre, built on 600 acres of land, is truly global in every respect. The centre has different test tracks and ultra modern crash test facilities. Around 1,400 engineers are employed here and this figure is bound to increase here as Maruti Suzuki develops another 100 acres of land at this centre. It’s truly a global R&D Centre. LAUNCHES NEW AUDI A3 CABRIOLET Audi has launched a luxury convertible - the new Audi A3 Cabriolet. The low weight, sporty four-seater convertible is the latest variant of the Audi A3 Cabriolet. The new Audi A3Cabriolet comes with a 1.4l TFSI Cylinder on Demand (COD) engine, which enables temporary cylinder shut-off when the engine is operating at partial load. The TFSI engine with 1,395cc displacement churns out 150 hp of power and develops 250 Nm of torque. This new car supersedes the industry’s benchmark of average fuel consumption of 19.20 km/l. The Audi A3 Cabriolet measures 4,423mm in length, 1,793mm in width and 1,409mm in height. It has a wheelbase of 2,595mm and comes with a short front overhang. The single frame grill has sharper contours and is wider than its predecessor. Price: 47,98,000 (ex-showroom Delhi)

NEW AUDI A4 35 TDI Audi added a new 35 TDI diesel variant to its A4 sedan portfolio, further increasing its presence in the Indian market. Audi has also managed to re-engineer the new A4 to deliver 7pc more power and economy. The 2.0 litre TDI engine now delivers a maximum power of 190hp and peak torque of 400Nm. The engine is mated to a 7-speed S Tronic transmission which enables the vehicle to return 18.25kms to a litre. Audi is also offering their Virtual cockpit setup along with smart phone integration on the new A4. The new A4 is 120kgs lighter than its predecessor. The new A4 features different drive modes -Comfort, Auto, Dynamic and Individual. The new Audi A4 35 TDI gets a top speed of 237kmph and can go from standstill to 100kmph in 7.7 seconds. In terms of safety the sedan has been equipped with 8 airbags, ABS and EBD, it also gets Audi’s Parking Aid Plus and a rear view camera. Price: 40,20,000 (ex-showroom Delhi)

JEEP WRANGLER UNLIMITED

The iconic Jeep brand rolled out a petrol powered variant of their stellar SUV, the Wrangler Unlimited in the Indian market. The V6 motor is capable of turning 280bhp and a max torque of 347Nm. More than 5 million vehicles globally are powered by this V6 petrol motor and its all aluminum construction has been designed with light weight components to keep over all weight at a minimum, delivering superior performance and capability both on and off road. The Pentastar V6 also features a new thermal management system as well as a cooled exhaust gas recirculation system which enables the SUV to deliver improved efficiency even in off road conditions. The Wrangler Unlimited in its petrol version will get Jeep’s Command Trac 4WD setup along with features like, ESC (Electronic Stability Control), a heavy duty suspension setup, automatic climate control, wash out interiors with removable carpets and drain plugs, auto headlamps, hill start control, electronic rollover mitigation, remote keyless entry and much more. Price: 56 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi)

LAMBORGHINI HURACÁN REAR-WHEEL DRIVE SPYDER Automobili Lamborghini has introduced in India the Huracan rear-wheel drive Spyder. The car comes with a new design in front and rear and is powered by a naturally aspirated V10 engine outputting 580 hp. The car does a 0-100km/h in 3.6 seconds with a top speed of 319 kmph. The rear-wheel drive Huracán Spyder features a newly designed front and rear with a dynamic but more aggressive look distinguishing it from the four- wheel drive version. The good looks of the car are accented by the large front air intakes that direct cooling air and headwind to increase down pressure on the front axle. Its Pirelli PZero tyres are exclusively developed for the rear-wheel drive. Price: 3.45 crore (ex-showroom Delhi)

LAUNCHES NEW PORSCHE 718 CAYMAN AND BOXSTER German sports car major, Porsche launched their new 718 Cayman and 718 Boxster in India. Both sports cars feature a mid engine and are small yet powerful machines. Powered by a 2.0 litre, turbocharged, four cylinder, flat engine these cars prove to be more powerful and faster than their predecessors. The engine is capable of putting out 300hp and turning 380Nm of torque, propelling these machines to 100kmph from standstill in a mere 4.7 seconds and achieve a top speed of 275kmph. The engine has been mated to a 6-speed manual transmission and both cars also get the option of auto start/ stop to improve efficiency while the vehicle is coasting. Both the Coupe and roadster are capable of delivering a fuel efficiency of 14.49kmpl which is an improvement of 13pc over the previous models. Price: 81.63 lakh and 85.53 lakh respectively (ex-showroom Delhi)

NEW TOYOTA CAMRY HYBRID & ALL-NEW PRIUS Toyota Kirloskar Motor has reiterated its commitment to hybridisation in India by announcing the launch of its two hybrid models- the new Camry Hybrid and the All-new Toyota Prius. The Camry Hybrid is India’s first strong luxury hybrid. Also being the first and the only hybrid model to be manufactured in India, the Camry Hybrid has come a long way ever since its introduction in 2013 in India. The new Camry Hybrid is equipped with Electronically- Controlled Continuously Variable Transmission. The 2.5 L Engine with an electric motor produces a total system output of 202hp, offering a mileage of 19.16 kmpl. The Prius is the first vehicle to be built on Toyota New Generation Architecture (TNGA). The TNGA platform means low-stance designs, giving the cars a lower centre of gravity than before, which in turn results in better suspension, stability and handling. TNGA and the latest in Toyota’s Hybrid technology blends the best of petrol engine and electric motor for a maximum efficiency of 26.27 kmpl with minimum emission. The all-new Prius comes with a powerful 1.8 L petrol engine. Price: 31,98,500 and 38,96,040 respectively (ex-showroom Delhi) The Camry Hybrid also qualifies to receive a markdown of Rs. 70,000 in its price under the FAME (Faster Adoption & Manufacturing of Electric cars) scheme and the benefit is passed onto the customer.

2017 HONDA CITY Japanese auto major, Honda launched their latest City sedan in India. The new facelift of the 2017 Honda City features LED DRLs as standard along with a brand new LED headlamp setup for the top end trims. The engine and drive train remain the same but the sedan now features a moderately refreshed interior. The Honda City now also features LED fog lamps, LED rear combination lamps, new diamond cut 16 inch alloy wheels as well as LED license plate lamps and a trunk lid spoiler. The sedan now gets an advanced 17.7cm touch screen infotainment setup which features satellite linked navigation, voice recognition, bluetooth telephony, audio streaming, 1.5GB of internal memory, 2 USB slots, 2 micro SD Slots and 1 HDMI input as well. It also gets smart phone integration through mirror link and support for WiFi to browse the internet and access emails. The engines powering the new City are a 1.5L i-DTEC diesel which churns out 100ps of power and 200Nm of torque as well as the 1.5L i-VTEC which turns 119ps and 145Nm. The diesel mill is available only with a 6-speed manual transmission while the petrol motor gets options for a 7-speed CVT as well as a 5-speed manual. The diesel engine is capable of returning 25.6kmpl while the manual petrol returns 17.4kmpl and the CVT variant returns a best in class 18kms to the litre. Variant

The VXi+ variant will be available with auto and manual transmissions along with features like dual airbags, ABS and EBD. This hatchback now offers consumers more contemporary features such as projector headlamps, a stylish front grill, alloy wheels and side skirts. LAUNCHES APRILIA SR150 RACE After the successful launch of the SR150 in India recently, Aprilia is now offering its second crossover, the SR150 Race. The SR150 Race comes to the country within less than six months of the flagship SR150 introduction. ‘Designed for Racers, Built for Riders’, the key features of the SR 150 Race include RS-GP inspired body colour and graphics, red alloy wheels and suspension springs tuned for faster acceleration. The Aprilia SR Race carries the SR 150 attributes like aggressive and sporty style, distinct handlebar, the light unit included in the shield and above all the pronounced “beak” on the front wheel characterises the front end, large black 14” alloy wheels with five spokes show off decisive and sporty design drawn from Aprilia racing bikes. NEW BAJAJ BS-IV PULSAR RS200 AND NS200 Bajaj Auto has upgraded its next-generation technology Pulsars to BS-IV standard in the 2017 edition. The bikes come with ABS, fuel injection, liquid cooling, perimeter frame and twin-projector headlamps. Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India Pvt Ltd (HMSI) has launched the new Activa 125 which is India’s highest selling 125cc automatic scooter. The new Activa 125 now comes with the new striking LED position lights integrated into the premium front chrome chest and a larger 3D Honda emblem for more differentiated style. HMSI has termed these changes as “Frontastic” style overhaul. It is Industry’s first automatic scooter to meet both Automatic Head Lamp On (AHO) and Bharat Stage-IV emission norms. Powering the Activa 125 is a 125cc Honda Eco Technology (HET) engine that delivers 8.52bhp@6,500 RPM and peak torque of 10.54Nm@5,000 RPM. The vehicle will be available in five colours – (New) Mat Crust Metallic in addition to existing Pearl Amazing White, Midnight Blue Metallic, Black, Rebel Red Metallic.

Suzuki Motorcycle India Private Limited (SMIPL), a subsidiary of Suzuki Motor Corporation, Japan, has launched the popular Gixxer and Gixxer SF with BS-IV and AHO in new graphics. The BS-IV compliant New Access 125 also gets the AHO feature, and was launched in a new colour as well.

T

here are fast cars and very fast cars. And when the word “Performance” is added to them, well they sprint like nobody’s business. The Performance version of the Audi RS 7 Sportback is no different. This is a more powerful variant of the RS 7 which in a way is Audi’s way of telling the BMW Ms and the Mercedes-Benz AMGs that its arsenal is loaded too. Audi has squeezed in a lot more horses in Performance version from 560 in the Sportback to as many as 605 in this! Though the engine produces the same 700Nm of torque, it now gets an overboost function which enables the driver with another 50Nm for a temporary period. The overboost helps the engine to belt out a total of 750Nm from 2500-7500rpm, while peak power of 605hp comes in at 6100rpm and lasts till 6800 revs. The moment you hit the start button, the 4 -litre V 8 turbocharged petrol engine roars to life and you can feel the horses inside tugging ferociously at their reins to let loose. A gentle tap of the accelerator make the twin exhausts scream out to signal the beginning of a great drive. I shift the gear to “Drive” mode and floor the accelerator pedal. I can feel the mighty G forces pushing me back into my seat almost forcefully. And then all you can see is the car gobbling the road ahead with ferocious tenacity. The Audi RS 7 Sportback Performance is a dynamo with impeccable manners. It does a 0-100kmph in 3.7 seconds and can achieve a top speed of 305kmph. To get the real top speed of 305kmph one needs to purchase Audi’s Dynamic Plus package. Not to forget an unused airstrip to test its top speed too! The RS 7 Sportback Performance also gets Audi’s trademark Quattro setup. This car is wellbehaved and even when you put it though a corner at high speed it will not bring its tail out. A 4-corner adaptive air suspension caters to a very seamless ride experience which is complimented by a smart damping control setup. The engine has also been mated to an 8-speed automatic gearbox which is silky smooth. Audi has added its Cylinder On Demand (COD) to the RS 7 Sportback Performance. When needed all 8 cylinders of the engine run at optimum performance. However, while in the city or driving casually, the COD will utilise only 4 cylinders. This improves fuel efficiency, but not the way commuter cars do. This car gives you just

about 10.56km per litre of petrol. And the more you floor the accelerator indiscriminately, the worse the fuel average! Almost everything on the interior and exterior remains more or less the same when compared to the RS 7 Sportback. It is a lot about Indulgence. Where else in the world will you find in a car, a rear seat so spacious and an ambient lighting with 64 different shades for your cabin that light up areas on the dashboard, under the front seats, on the door trims, etc? I was handed over the keys to the 350d, powered by a 2987cc V6 diesel engine. The new E-Class also comes with a 1991 cc 4-inline petrol engine option. Both the petrol and diesel engines are mated to a 9G-Tronic transmission which in essence means that it’s automatic and has nine forward gears. But it’s the diesel car that performs far better on several fronts. While the peak power is 258hp in the diesel variant, it’s only 184hp in the petrol one. Similarly the peak torque is 620Nm (300 Nm), acceleration from 0 to 100kmph is 6.6 seconds (8.5 seconds) and top speed is 250kmph (240kmph).

The moment you touch the Start / Stop button the engine kicks into life. The moment you engage the gear into D mode, off goes the car like a butterfly. There are different driving modes to choose from, be it Eco, Comfort, Sport, etc. Changing these settings can be done through the scroll button on the console. The space between the dead pedal and the brake pedal was a bit too narrow for my liking. The new long wheel base is 5063mm in overall length which means it is 184mm longer than the current E-class. The long wheel base means, this car is also 205mm longer that the current model, translating into more than 50pc rear space as compared to the current E-Class. In the front you have signature twin LED daytime running lights and high performance headlamps while at the rear we have LED taillights with crystal look. There is an LED turn-signal in the ORVMs. While the car looks smart with smooth curvy design lines, a panoramic sunroof adds to the style quotient. The bold, muscular

WHEELZ & ROADZ front grille with large air intakes in the bumper as well as grille areas, along with the 17 inch, 10-spoke light alloy wheels, make the new E-Class very sporty in its appearance. Interestingly, to give the rear section a spacious feel, the rear quarter glass has also been moved into the C pillar. The diesel variant also comes with additional front door illuminated sill, apart from the standard rear door illuminated sills. As for the rear seat where the bossman sits, it can be adjusted to very high levels of comfort. For all practical purposes the big man sits diagonally behind the driver seat and that’s where all the real controls come alive to the touch of a Chauffer Package button. While the front area has two climate zones for the driver and the co-passenger, the entire rear area has one climate zone which can be adjusted with a tweak of two switches which take care of your fan speed and

A DRIVING EXPERIENCE temperature. But what are horribly missing are the controls for the 13 speaker Burmester sound system in the car which can only be controlled from the front. The dash area is made of stitched artico which find their way into the plush seats too. The dash has a smart analog clock giving the car a retro touch. The console area is of wood trim in piano black finish. The steering wheel with paddle shifts can be adjusted for rake and reach electrically and what makes this car unique is the fact that even the steering has two touch pads on either sides of it. The left one controls the display of the 12.3 inch screen on the dash while the right one controls the display in the 7.4 inches area in the instrument cluster area. Apart from this the steering has the usual buttons to adjust sound and receive, reject and mute phone calls. The larger touch pad in the console area also serves the purpose of changing the setting on the 12.3 inches screen, and so does the

large knob. Two scroll buttons on the console help to change the dynamic drive settings of the car and adjust the volume. The screen now also gets android auto and apple car play smart phone connectivity. The new E-Class can even park itself, for which it takes its assistance from the 360 surround aerial view cameras and loads of sensors. It also comes with parking sensors for front and back. Apart from its great drive abilities, one feature that stands

out with the car is the Air Body control or adaptive air suspension which once activated through the press of a button on the console, enables the car to be raised by 25mm. But then as the vehicle begins to climb to speeds above 80kmph, the car comes down by 15 mm automatically. The new E-Class from Mercedes Benz is definitely a car that offers absolute indulgence. Now we have one more thing that the Chinese have, apart from the numbers we share when it comes to population!

ity has always been the bread winner for Honda in India and globally India is the largest market for this sedan. With stiff competition from the likes of Hyundai’s Verna and Maruti’s Ciaz, Honda cannot afford to get it wrong with their CIty. They

launched a new mid life facelift for the City and in our opinion it is bang on the pulse of what the Indian consumer wants. Getting up close and personal with the refreshed Honda City, we took it for a spin through the crowded streets of New Delhi. Catching the eye at first glance is the striking new LED headlamp

setup. The City now features headlamp integrated LED DRLs and full LED headlamps which is a segment first. Its fascia gets a new, more chiseled bumper which gives this sedan a bold yet elegant look. The side profile remains more or less the same, though the biggest change can be found in the addition of 16’

rims with a wider tyre profile now on offer. The rear gets a new bumper along with a spoiler and an integrated LED stop lamp. Higher spec variants get LED tail lamps which lend this sedan a much needed contemporary look. On the inside, Honda has upped the quality of this cabin which was quite plush to begin

rue to its moniker, Hyundai’s Grand i10 facelift feels impressive in almost every aspect. A few aesthetic changes on the outside and the addition of some contemporary features in its cabin are major highlights of what’s new on this popular hatchback from the Korean major. It is poised to take on the likes of Maruti’s new Ignis. But has Hyundai equipped it the right amount of armor to leave competition in the dust? When launched, the Grand i10 took the market by storm. Chic, urban, sporty and feature rich are a few words I had used to describe it back then and that stands testament till date. The facelift is quintessential in the segment and stands out with a bold new fascia which features a

large hexagonal front grille, an ‘L’ shaped fog lamp housing with DRLs and wrap around headlamps. The side and rear profile don’t see too much change but feature sleeker plastic cladding and large reflectors in the rear that add to the practical quotient of this hatch. On the inside, the Grand i10 gets just the right amount of kit which gives it all the utility one would require from a city smart car. Features like a 7’ touch screen infotainment setup with Apple CarPlay, Android auto, MirrorLink and many other connectivity options never go amiss. It also gets voice recognition which is accessible at the simple push of a button. Speaking of buttons, the Grand i10 also gets push button start/ stop with a smart key and many other handy

functions and features to make the daily commute simply delightful. We got a chance to test the 1.2L, petrol variant which has been mated to a 4-speed automatic box. The engine puts out 81 horses at 6000rpm and can turn almost 114Nm at 4000rpm. Refinement is synonymous with this motor and its linear

power delivery is one of the best in its segment. The automatic gear box is nearly seamless in its operations and up-shifts while ambling around in traffic are barely noticeable. Floor the pedal and a surge of power is delivered almost instantly. However, on highways the lack of a fifth gear does become evident after 120kmph. In the city one does not really feel the need of that fifth gear. The Grand i10 is also very practical and seems purpose built to remit utility. It gets plenty of storage spaces along with impressive passenger comfort and welcoming interiors. While commuting in the city as well, this hatchback offers plenty of comfort for passengers with a softly sprung suspension setup which glides over bad roads and bumps. For a hatchback which offers quite a bit on the technology front and some first-in-class features like the 7’ touch screen infotainment system, Hyundai is demanding a very modest amount and seems to have got the pricing bang on! What adds to the appeal of the Grand i10 is its newfangled looks and sporty mannerisms. Along with getting the price right it would seem Hyundai has kept things true to the cars name and ensured it stays as grand as it was the day they launched it!

APRILIA SR 150 RACE

I

n the land of ‘yeh dil mange more’ it is never a bad idea to add more to what is already being offered and the Italian motorcycle maker Aprilia has learned that quickly. Their first crossover scooter in India, the SR 150 was warmly received due to its unparalleled performance and cutting edge looks. But then I guess someone somewhere said that they don’t just want their SR 150 to go fast but also scream that it does so. Thus we got the new SR 150 Race, donning the RS-GP inspired graphics. While I absolutely loved the Dark Knight styled colour scheme of the original SR 150 (I still do), the new graphics add a different kind of flair. The original was more about subtlety, while the new Race edition is the polar opposite. Even while it

is standing still it radiates the racing DNA and heritage that the company has. The bright colours are an accurate representation of the liveliness of this 150cc scooter. The 14inch alloys now come in red colour while the front 220mm disc gets a gold coloured caliper.

If you look at the spec sheet of the new SR 150 Race you will find that it is still powered by the same 154.8cc single cylinder engine putting out 10.4hp @ 6750rpm and 11.4 Nm of torque at 5000rpm. Considering the fact that the new Race edition costs only about Rs 3000 more

than the normal SR 150 you would not expect any change here but Aprilia has tweaked it to boost the acceleration even further. As if it wasn’t already quick enough! The suspension is slightly stiffer and Aprilia claims to have tinkered with the CVT transmission as well to provide

for an even quicker acceleration. While I did not have enough time and access to a normal SR 150 to test this out properly, in this first experience of the scooter, it is still safe to say that the difference is not super noticeable. Apart from these things

the Race edition shares that same pluses and minus of the normal version. The seat is comfortable and is long enough for two people. The foot board is decently long but not the best in terms of leg space. The underseat storage area is also only big enough to house some papers or a small bag. In real world performance you can expect a fuel efficiency of close to 40kmpl if you drive carefully but that is hardly going to be the case. The large tyres provide good contact with the tarmac below even while tackling sharp hairpins. The braking setup also remains the same and you get the same amount of reassurance from the large 220mm disc at the front. It feels appropriate for a quick and zippy vehicle like this. The rear 140mm drum also works decently well and when used together, they can help you bring the scooter to a halt in very short time. The SR 150 Race does not have a real and direct competition as of now, except for the normal SR 150 which begs the question, “Is it worth the extra money?” I feel that the extra amount you spend for the Race edition is totally justified because of the cosmetic changes that are exclusive to this version of the scooter and the changes make it one of the most recognisable two wheelers on the streets. The slight increase in acceleration is welcome as well. So in that case the biggest reason why someone would want to go for the normal version would probably be the colour preference. On the other hand if you are someone like me who prefers his vehicle to look a little more subtle then you could rather well go for the one without the word “Race” added to it!

Sonia Jain sets record riding all kinds of motorcycles

BMW Group India presented the 13th BMW Art Car created by Italy’s most renowned contemporary artist Sandro Chia. His creation was exhibited from February 2-5, 2017 at the India Art Fair in New Delhi. Sandro Chia created the 13th Art Car for BMW in 1992 with the BMW M3 GTR which is celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2017. The BMW Art Cars or the ‘Rolling Sculptures’ are original masterpieces of art that demonstrate an individual synthesis of artistic expression and automobile design. Since 1975, eighteen prominent artists from across the world have created Art Cars on the basis of contemporary BMW automobiles of their times, all offering a wide range of artistic interpretations. BMW Art Cars are an indispensable component and a core platform of BMW Group’s cultural engagement. They are unique creations combining automobiles, technology, design and art. It was back in 1992 when Sandro Chia became the only Italian artist so far to be asked to put his mark on a BMW Art Car. The artist decided to give a BMW car a distinctive look; he created a combination of BMW’s design language and the artists’ perspective of multiple gazes of the onlooker and how the car reflects on them.

Sonia Jain, a leading biker in the country, has registered her name in the Limca Book of Records along with India Book of Records (IBR) for the year 2017 for riding 100 different models of motorcycles, the highest number by a woman in the country, as of August 16, 2016. She rode each bike for a minimum of 5 km to 500 km. The motorbikes varied from 60 cc, 63 kg Sunny to 1811 cc, 360 kg Indian Roadmaster. Hailing from the capital city of New Delhi, Sonia is a competitive motorcyclist and rally racer. Her journey started right after her education when, just to be able to win a bike, she participated and won ‘The India Bike Rally’ (2009) organised by Yamaha and BIGADDA. Since then, there has been no looking back for this trailblazer. She has been a part of various rallies and professional motorcycle rides covering the length and breadth of the country aboard the meanest machines on two wheels. Some of her notable feats include riding the 1811 cc Indian Vintage from Delhi to Pune; covering 1900 kms across 6 cities in Rajasthan riding the 800 cc Triumph Tiger. Jain was also a part of MTV ‘Chase the Monsoon’ Season 4 which involved her riding 3000 km from Shimla to Ooty as part of the show. Other notable machines ridden by her include the 1811 cc Indian Roadmaster, HD Roadking, Ducati Monster, Hayabusa and Yamaha MT01 to name a few. Among Vintage motorcycles, Sonia has ridden Ariel, BMW R69, Rajdoot GTS 175/ Bobby and Triumph 1942 3HW.

My memory is fading very fast and I forget easily but I remember the heroes...all of them,” old man Yizamo Kikon says. He has a faraway look in his eyes as he sits near the kitchen window and gazes out at the deep green valley yonder. He points to my muddy boots and says “…those days were just like today, rainy and muddy. Men and machine were all caked in mud.” Sitting beside him, Lirumo Kikon, nods in agreement. He doesn’t talk much. Although they fought in the same battle but under different regiments and in different areas, they share the same stories of valour, glory, desperation, heartbreak and joy. Yizamo and Lirumo of Longsachung village in the district of Wokha in Nagaland, are veterans of World War II who fought in the battles of Kohima and Imphal and in the ensuing campaign in Burma. Talks of the war bring back too many sad memories for him but as soon as I mention ‘jeep’ in the course of the conversation, his eyes light up. He breaks into a slow deep smile and thousands of wrinkles line up his face. He is 96 year old now and he had joined the 1st Assam Regiment when he was 22 years old.

Yizamo was attached with the medics and he carried out evacuation of the wounded when he was not letting off shots at the Japanese from his Lee Enfield rifle. He transported many wounded soldiers in a Jeep that doubled up as an ambulance and was driven by a young 20 year old Canadian. The two young men formed a good team and picked up the wounded from some impossible places. The Jeep was not the most comfortable of ambulances but it did the job with aplomb and at times carried three wounded men at one go from the frontlines.

carried incredible loads, was modified for specific reasons and was agile as a mountain goat.

THE JEEP STORY On the eve of WW II, the US War Department decided that it needed a light cross country reconnaissance vehicle.... and it needed it fast. The department set some tough specifications that suited its purpose and floated the tender on July 11, 1940. The vehicle had to be 4 wheel drive, should accommodate a crew of 3, have a wheelbase of 2032 mm, a track of 1194mm, should have a fold down windshield, should be able to carry a payload of 299 kgs and must have a dry weight of 980 kilos. These were tough specifications and only two manufacturers responded to the tender...American Bantam Car Company and Willys Overland Motors, though Ford Motor Company joined in later to tide over production constraints. The manufacturers were given just 45 days to submit the prototype and a production ready model

in 75 days. Bantam was the first to deliver the prototype to the army for evaluation. It was named ‘Blitz Buggy’ and it pretty much maintained the army’s requirements. Since Bantam did not have the production capacity to deliver the vehicles in accordance to the army’s demand, the war department invited Willys and Ford to make their own prototypes....The war had already started in Europe and the army was in such a desperate situation, that it handed over the basic Bantam blueprint to Willys and Ford to expedite the whole process. The Willys Quad and the Ford Pygmy models turned out to be rather similar and they entered the competition alongside the Bantam BRC 60. Production began on March 31, 1941 but Bantam could not keep up with the demand of 75 vehicles a day and Willys and Ford were also asked to join in the production. In July 1941, the War Department decided that there should be only one supplier and Willys won the contract of supplying 16,000 MA (the name later changed to

Delhi celebrates the spirit of heritage motoring The lawns of India Gate in New Delhi came alive with flowers of a different kind in full bloom ---heritage cars and bikes of yore---- as the 21 Gun Salute Vintage Car Rally & Concours Show got underway. This was the 7th edition of the event and it showcased hundreds of rare marques in the backdrop of a grand celebration with dances, arts and culture. The event welcomed thousands of visitors from around the globe and many eminent guests, members of royal families and renowned personalities. The Chief Guest for the first day of this 3-day mega event, Vinod Zutshi, Secretary, Ministry of Tourism, inaugurated the event. “Every year, as a tribute to the golden era of the automotive industry, we organise this International Vintage Car Rally & Concours Show and this year we have received immense support from National & International Tourism Boards & the Ministry of Tourism, � said Madan Mohan, Founder & MD, 21 Gun Salute Heritage & Managing Trust.

Buemi becomes hat-trick hero in Argentina Formula E Sebastien Buemi of Renault e.dams has made Formula E history by becoming the first driver to win three races in a row. It was also his ninth win in the all-electric street racing series, and the 12th for the team. That means Renault e.dams have now won half of all the Formula E races that have taken place. The bonus point for the Visa Fastest Lap went to Felix Rosenqvist. The Mahindra Racing driver had been battling with Piquet before the stops, but his second car refused to start up and he was left with having to battle for a consolation point. Felix came

in 18th while his teammate from Mahindra Racing Nick Heidfeld came in 15th. But, in front of 21,000 enthusiastic fans, Buemi had to work hard for his victory. From his first-ever Julius Baer pole position, Lucas di Grassi (ABT Schaeffler Audi Sport) led away at the start, while Jean-Eric Vergne slotted his TECHEETAH into second place. Di Grassi was struggling with his car, and in quick succession he was passed by Vergne and then Buemi. TECHEETAH uses the same powertrain as Renault e.dams, but there was nothing Vergne could do to stop Buemi

charging by into the lead. Further back di Grassi had slipped behind the impressive NextEV NIO of Oliver Turvey and the second Renault e.dams of Nico Prost as his struggles intensified. By the time of the mandatory car change pitstop, Buemi was almost six seconds to the good and seemingly set for an easy win. But the brake balance of the second car was far from his liking, and struggling to slow the car in a straight line, his pace dropped off, allowing Vergne back into the hunt. Di Grassi too was now a contender. A slow stop for Turvey dropped him out of the podium fight, while an aggressive pass on Prost moved di Grassi back into the top-three. With the car handling much more to his liking he was closing in on both Buemi and Vergne, but the gap was too big for him to overcome. Three wins in a row has increased Buemi’s points lead to a huge 29 points. And after two

previous disappointments at the Puerto Madero track, he was delighted to take another win. Another podium for di Grassi - his 15th in total keeps him in second place in the championship, but he knows he and his ABT Schaeffler Audi Sport team will have their work cut out to overthrow the dominant Buemi. For the third race in a row Nico Prost took fourth place for Renault e.dams. Season one champion Nelson Piquet Jr. claimed his best result since his title-winning campaign with a strong fifth for NextEV NIO, while behind him waged a fabulous battle for the remaining points-paying positions. In the searing heat of a lovely Argentine summer’s day, energy consumption was at a premium, but saving energy in the midst of wheel-to-wheel combat is a tough ask, and it was Faraday Future Dragon Racing’s Loic Duval who ultimately prevailed to take sixth place. Seventh went to Daniel Abt in the second ABT Schaeffler car and eighth to Jerome D’Ambrosio, who’d indulged in a great paint swapping battle with team-mate Duval. Turvey finally brought his overheating car home in ninth, while to the delight of the crowd, local hero Jose Maria Lopez grabbed the final point for DS Virgin Racing following a fine drive from the back of the grid after crashing in qualifying. There was late heartbreak for Mitch Evans, who was on the verge of scoring the first point for the Panasonic Jaguar Racing team, only to slow in the closing stages and drop out of the top-10. The championship now moves to Mexico City and the historic Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez, where round four of the 2016/17 season takes places on April 1.

Toyota celebrates with Jari-Matti Latvala win in WRC Sweden Toyota celebrated victory just two rallies into its comeback following a 17-year absence from the FIA World Rally Championship with Jari-Matti Latvala winning in Sweden. It was the Finn’s 17th career victory, but one of his most emotional. He faced a season on the sidelines after his Volkswagen team withdrew from the sport at the end of last season, before finally joining the Japanese manufacturer in a late deal, a WRC press statement said. Latvala began the final leg with a slender 3.8sec lead over Ott Tänak after long-time leader Thierry Neuville crashed the previous night. He won all three snow and ice-covered speed tests in his Yaris World Rally Car to extend the margin to 29.2sec. He claimed maximum bonus points from the Power Stage and, after finishing second in the season-opening Rallye MonteCarlo, holds a four-point lead in the drivers’ standings. The Welshman made repairs and the car was restored to full health for the final two tests. Hayden Paddon was just 4.6sec behind in a Hyundai i20 Coupe, with Stéphane Lefebvre, WRC 2 winner Pontus Tidemand and Teemu Suninen completing the leaderboard. Neuville eventually finished 13th after restarting, just behind Kris Meeke whose disappointing weekend culminated with a penultimate stage spin. Gaurav Gill wins ‘Motorsports Person of the Year Award’ at FMSCI function Five time National Rally Champion Gaurav Gill was decorated with the prestigious ’Motorsports Person of the Year Award’ at an FMSCI function held in Hyderabad. The function was attended by the entire galaxy of racing and rallying stars in the country. Gill, the reigning Asia Pacific Champion had a spectacular 2016, winning all five rounds of the APRC to set a new record, received the Raymond Gautam Singhania Trophy from Jean Todt, the president of FIA (Le Federation Internationale de l’Automobile). The awards giving ceremony, an annual feature in the Federation of Motor Sports Club of India (FMSCI), was organised at a much more lavish scale this year under the stewardship of its recently elected president Akbar Ibrahim. As many as 75 winners were presented with trophies for their victorious efforts in the year gone by. B Vijay Kumar, owner of the Kari Motor Speedway, was also given the lifetime achievement award for his immense contribution to the field of motorsports in the country.

Record 40 entries for Force Gurkha Rainforest Challenge (RFC) India

Delhi-based Cougar Motorsport Pvt. Ltd. has successfully completed its 100th event. The organisation started operations in the year 2009 as a pioneer in the luxury self-driving experiences arena and has since then diversified into various service offerings, all of them related to motoring experiences. Sharing his happiness on reaching this milestone, Cougar Motorsport’s Founder & Director Ashish Gupta said, “I can still remember the time we were planning our first event and the doubts that people around us had about the viability of sustaining such a niche business. In these 100 events, we have dabbled in a variety of formats including rallies, expeditions, off-roading and event management. The muscular and mean looking IronScorpion HMV driven by an American driver is among the record 40 entries that have come its way for the fourt edition of the Force Gurkha Rainforest Challenge (RFC) India to be held in Goa from July 22 to 30, 2017. In total there are eight entries from Hyderabad, seven from Kerala, four teams from Mumbai, seven from Karnataka including four entries from Bangalore, three teams each from Goa, Delhi and Chandigarh, two each from Pune and Tamil Nadu and one entry from Yamunanagar. Among the notable entries is a US driver who will be driving an IronScorpion HMV, a vehicle that has replaced the Hummer in the US Army. HMV stands for High Mobility Vehicles and is used for for special purposes and recreational use. IronScorpion is a partnership between Preferred Chassis Fabrication Inc, a US based company that is the manufacturer of the Scorpion All-Terrain Vehicle, and Sarbloh Motors, an Indian company, which specialises in off-road and expedition vehicles. Pune-based Force Motors Ltd, which was the title sponsor of the event for its first three editions, has retained the title sponsorship for the 2017 edition as well. In a surprise move, Mumbai-based Fairmont Group has signed veteran Malaysian driver Mervyn Lim, who was the first runner-up in all the previous editions of Force Gurkha RFC India, to drive for them in RFC India 2017. In the earlier editions, Lim represented Force Motors Ltd.

Harrison Newey is crowned MRF Challenge 2016 Champion Harrison Newey was crowned the MRF Challenge 2016 Champion after beating Mick Schumacher and Joey Mawson in the final race of the season. Newey and Mawson tied on 277 points after the finish but the British driver took the title due to having had more wins than his rival. Earlier in the day Harrison Newey took his 5th win of the season ahead of Juri Vips and Ralf Aron as Mick Schumacher spun out of the race. Sandeep Kumar beat Raghul Rangasamy and Karthik Tharani to win Race 2 of the MRF 1600 series. Starting on pole for the second time in the weekend starting February 17, 2017, Newey got the perfect start as Schumacher got bogged down and dropped down to 4th position. Newey pulled away at the front with Vips, then got passed Aron and slotted into 2nd place. Mawson again started from a lowly 7th place but moved up to 6th and set his sights on Daniel Ticktum ahead. Schumacher tried to get past Aron on lap 2 but could not make the move stick. On lap 6 Schumacher spun out of the race at the back section while chasing Aron and Vips. In the

meanwhile Mawson passed Ticktum to move into 4th place. Newey comfortably crossed the finish line in 1st place ahead of Vips and Aron. Mawson finished in 4th place ahead of Ticktum and Felipe Drugovich. In Race 2, Mawson had the perfect start and went into C1 first ahead of Newey and Schumacher. There was action in C1 as Aron and Neil Verhagen crashed, bringing out the safety car. When racing resumed on Lap 5, Mawson held on to the lead with Newey all over his gearbox. Schumacher in 3rd stayed with the two leaders, as has been the case for most of the season with these three driver fighting each other all year long. Mawson looked on course to take the title but a costly mistake on lap 11 into the last corner allowed both Newey and Schumacher to get past. Still Mawson had a 2 point lead. With 2 points being awarded for fastest lap of the race, the top 3 drivers gave it all they got. Newey set the fastest lap on lap 13 only for Schumacher to do it on lap 14. On the final lap of the race Newey went three tenths off to set the fastest lap and win the title.

India Gaming Show 2017 Report: Aakash S. Paul Hall No. 18 of Pragati Maidan, New Delhi was probably the happiest place in India from 2nd-5th of February 2017. Reason being, it was the venue for India Gaming Show 2017, the first and largest gaming show in India. Up until now fans of video games had to either spend a bucket load of money and go abroad to attend such an event or be happy by watching it through someone else’ eyes on YouTube and Facebook. But thanks to some brilliant and thoughtful minds, India finally got its own video game convention and that to backed by the government. The India Gaming Show 2017 was organised by Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and supported by Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology. Six countries took part in the event. In the talk show hosted in the Japan pavilion, the partner country in the event, experts explained how Gainax a well known anime production company has been making anime based on and around the Fukushima area and its culture to attract people to the city which was stuck by a massive earthquake and left by people in a barren state. They are trying to restore the city of Fukushima to its former glory and even used an old and broken school building as their animation headquarter. The Japan pavilion also saw some musical

performances by Japanese artists, one of which who actually spoke in Hindi and played ‘Gulabi Ankhen’ on his violin. The Japan pavilion also had a host of posters and life-sized cardboard cutouts of famous animes. Korea was the guest country in the event and hosted a lot of playable game titles like Sniper Girls, God of Soul, Heroes Will etc. Sony PlayStation India had one of the biggest stall and for a good reason. They showcased the yet to be launched PlayStation 4 Pro and eager enthusiasts got to have a go at Sony’s latest and most powerful console yet. The PS VR was also up for playing and it was a great sight to see joyful smiles of people experiencing Virtual Reality for the first time. Speaking of VR, even HTC had their Vive VR headset on their stand, where you could play Fruit Ninja and some other games in VR. One of the most interesting VR showcases at IGS 2017 however, was by Loop Reality. They had an actual Hero cycle mounted on a stand. You had to paddle in real life to move in the game. While the in-game graphics were not revolutionary, it was the way the demo tricked your brain into thinking that you were actually climbing an incline and made you brace for impacts that made it stand out from the rest. At the event I also got to get my hands on the yet to be released game Nier: Automata. A demo of the game was up for playing at the Square Enix stand. Many might know Square Enix for making world famous titles such as Tomb Raider, Final Fantasy and Hitman. But it was not all about the foreign companies and people. The first sight that one actually came to see in the hall was a big stage with gigantic LED screens where the best player from across our country battled in games like DOTA2, CS:GO, Street

Fighter and more. Zepetto Games, the maker of a very famous Counter Strike like online first person shooter game, Piercing Blow, was also having matches of its own with two teams competing to reach 100 kills (in-game) before the other. Similarly Indian game developer, PlayIzzOn had a pavilion where they showcased their celebrity based games like Being Salmaan and Sachin Saga. Samsung launched their latest curved displays with quantum dot technology as well. These curved monitors offer a wider colour gamut and higher brightness levels with a fast response time of 144Hz. Their dual hinge stand bolted to the displays was just as amazing as the display and allowed you to not only set the height of the display but also rotate it sideways. For the hardware buffs there were mouth watering overclocked systems from Republic Of Gamers, Gigabyte and HyperX. Needless to say, the gaming performance of these rigs were beyond word. I mean you don’t get to see Doom running at a steady 120fps everyday! Enthusiastic cosplayers were a common sight because the event served as the other big opportunity for cosplay showcase after Comic Con. You could also buy action figures of some of your favorite anime characters like Goku, Sabre and Luffy. Now we watch out for this show in 2018!

aruti Suzuki’s 600 acres of unique playground in Rohtak near Delhi in the state of Haryana has around 1400 engineers playing ball almost every day of their lives, not to win trophies for themselves, but to keep the cars we drive and the people in and around them as safe as possible. “More than 30 different kinds of tracks have been built into the playground which our engineers cherish..... It’s the kind and level of work we are doing here that keeps them occupied and charged up. That’s a major motivation for our engineers here,” says CV Raman, Executive Director, Engineering, Maruti

Suzuki India Limited. Raman was addressing journalists while demonstrating the extent of work being carried out at Maruti Suzuki’s global R&D Centre in Rohtak. The centre which has already seen an investment of Rs 1900 crore in Phase I, will see an additional investment of a similar amount till November 2019 when work in phase II ends, taking the total investment to Rs 3800 crore. The centre is poised to become one of the most advanced R&D facilities in India and amongst the top facilities in Asia. Also, it is not every other day that Maruti Suzuki allows you to witness a brand new Maruti Suzuki Ignis car travel through a remote mechanism at a speed of

56 odd kilometres per hour and crash into a 90-tonne concrete block with loads of sensors and cameras along with two advanced Anthropomorphic Test Devices (ATDs), a.k.a. crash test dummies sitting in the front seats, recording in the process every micro second of the test in order to collate data that would help the company build safer cars as well as ensure that people sitting inside escape without any fatal injures post a crash. Just to understand the immense capability of at least one sophisticated equipment at the centre, it is pertinent to note that the cameras installed at the centre capture the crashes at anywhere between 1000 frames per second to 10,000 frames

per second (fps). A high end camera used by auto journalists to capture speeding cars and bikes for their reviews have a capability of around 60 fps, while a DJI Osmo recording camera has 120fps capability and a Go Pro around 240fps capability. So what is this centre all about? Spread over a 600-acre campus (600 acres have been developed and another 100 acres lie unused as of now), this integrated R&D Centre has state-of-the-art vehicle testing and evaluation labs, besides a world class proving ground with 31 unique test tracks that traverse over 31 kilometres replicating real life terrains. Thus Maruti Suzuki wants to not only cherish the initiative of “Make in

COVER REPORT India”, but is also ushering in an era of “Create in India”. The centre has a 5.9 km long high-speed track with 2km straight stretches on either side. Along its periphery is a 35 degree banking track where a car can be driven at high speeds of around 190kmph. The track itself is no ordinary one, having been built by an international company specialised in such tasks. The machines deployed for building these tracks were GPS enabled and the task was carried out with utmost precision. Besides the high-speed track, the centre has several unique test tracks like Belgian Block Road, Straight Block Road, S-Type Block Road, Twist Ditch, Undulated Road, Speed breakers, water wading roads, highway road, low friction road, vehicle dynamics area, NVH roads (for testing noise, vibration and harshness of a vehicle), ABS track for endurance test, etc. The entire track area is also interspersed with 13 lagoons, some of which continue to hold water and are homes to several migratory birds! These lagoons play a critical role in ensuring that there is no water logging during rains and since they are inter connected they ensure that water is evenly distributed in these lagoons. While these open air tracks are used to test the capabilities of the car on the performance, durability and comfort front, it is the 5664 square metre Passive Safety Lab that holds the key to all safety related matters. Apart from the crash lab area here, there is a soak room, sled facility (crash tests are carried out here with the shell of a car), pedestrian lab and even a dummy calibration lab. These sophisticated Hybrid III dummies are priced in the range of Rs. 30 lakh to Rs. 90 lakh. The pedestrian testing is done with

new generation devices and products fitted with sensors and cameras that can assess the damage occurred to areas like the skull, neck and the entire leg (femur, knee and tibia) during a head on crash of a human being with a car. Here, while the car is stationary, sophisticated machines push the testing devices at speeds of 35kmph on to the front of the car in order to determine the damage. But it is the frontal offset crash test and side impact tests carried out at higher speeds that enable the engineers at the Rohtak R&D centre to determine how safe the car is post an accident, for the occupants of the car. Since the time the centre has become operational, Maruti Suzuki has carried out at least 200 such tests. Post each test, the brand new car is dismantled and disposed of as scarp. But it is the invaluable data that helps the company make better and safer cars. Crash tests of such nature carried out in government testing centres like ARAI or iCAT could cost as much as Rs 15 lakh per test which does not include the cost of the vehicle!

MARUTI SUZUKI INDIA LTD (MSIL) – STRENGTHENING ITS ENGINEERING PROWESS Way back in the 1980s when Maruti Suzuki India Ltd was known as Maruti Udyog Ltd , its engineers enhanced their skills by visiting Suzuki’s global engineering facilities in Japan for a maximum period of four to five months. So whether it was the facelift of the Zen car in 2003, the co-design of Swift with the Suzuki global R&D team in 2005, the working on the full body change of Alto in 2012, or the making of the compact SUV Vitara Brezza in 2016, each of this marked a new high for Maruti engineers. “Of course all of this was done with a lot of hand holding from Suzuki of Japan,” says Raman. The Vitara Brezza was conceptualised, designed and developed in India using Suzuki’s engine and core technology. The car became a reality using some of the contemporary facilities of this Rohtak R&D Centre. So, while vehicle design, development and testing require the most sophisticated equipment, more important is to develop capability of engineers over time to optimally utilise these facilities to ensure customer satisfaction. Over the last decade, Maruti Suzuki has systematically trained and developed engineers for R&D by giving them exposure to new model development as well as doing special projects along with the more experienced engineers at SMC Japan on design and technology. Nearly 35% of R&D engineers in MSIL have already been trained at Suzuki, Japan for up to two years, and built the competence to create modern vehicles with advanced features and high quality and safety. A visit to the company’s technical centre in Manesar near Delhi revealed a lot about the after sales and service standards that Ford maintains. We all know Ford makes robust cars which have the right amount of technology and perform well on road. But the strategy behind their after sales service is a much lesser known fact to most. Surprisingly vehicles sold by Ford are not too expensive to maintain and are

backed by top notch service standard. Ford has also got one of the most transparent systems in place when it comes to the cost of service and parts. Through the service price and parts price calculator on their website, Ford customers are able to know the exact cost of periodic maintenance and parts before even sending their cars to a Ford workshop. This does bring a sense of transparency in the system. Ford has further gone and ensured that they reduce the replacement cost of parts using a sub assembly system of replacements. Many of the auto parts used in their cars are broken down into sub components. During the event of a malfunction only a specific sub part will need to be replaced, thus bringing down the overall cost of ownership. Ford’s latest offering, the Figo Aspire gets about 850 sub assembly parts which will ensure that the overall parts

replacement cost during the tenure of ownership is reduced by changing only the affected sub assembly part. The company is also working alongside their suppliers to ensure higher levels of localisation, thus significantly reducing the cost of parts used in their vehicles. While Ford has taken care of two very critical aspects related to after sales service, these would mean nothing without the ease of availability of parts. The company has set up more than 7 lakh POS for the distribution of their genuine parts across the country. Customers can thus easily avail these parts from multi brand workshops or their local mechanics as well. Ford’s genuine parts distributors have been appointed in Delhi, Rajasthan, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Goa, Daman & Diu, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, AP, Telangana, West Bengal and Guwahati. So, what would be the cost of running these vehicles for say 1,00,000 kms? Ford has claimed that their Figo Aspire petrol model will incur a running

cost of just Rs. 0.37 per km, while the diesel models will incur Rs. 0.45 per km. But would bigger models which the company is retailing also possess such impeccable figures. The EcoSport is one of Ford’s most popular vehicles in India and comes with a running cost of Rs. 0.42 per kilometre for the petrol variant, while diesel incurs a running cost of Rs. 0.46 per km. Even their mammoth Endeavour works up a faint Rs. 0.68/ km for the 2.2L diesel engine variant and Rs. 0.72/ km for the 3.2L version. Ford has further gone and setup more than 185 outlets (Ford Assured) for purchase of multi brand second hand vehicles. The company will guarantee transparency, quality, choice, pricing and warranty of 20,000kms or 1 year. To enhance the experience of ownership, Ford has also set up a vehicle personalisation centre where customers can choose a variety of different customisations for their vehicles. Currently these options are available only for the EcoSport model. The company has a network of 376 sales and service facilities in more than 209 cities across India also has initiatives like 24X7 road side assistance.

Magneti Marelli showcases strength of Technical centre in India The Euros 7.9 billion (Rs 56,130.8 crore approx) Magneti Marelli company, part of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) Group of Italy, is confident that its India Technical Centre will grow significantly in the country and also contribute a lot more to the global automobile market, thereby expanding its footprint worldwide. The centre is currently the hub of all engineering services of the Magneti Marelli company in India and supplies components such as infotainment, instrument cluster, body computer, power train, telematics, lighting ECU advance engineering and shock absorbers to all OEMs operating in the country. These systems undergo a series of tests and evaluation alongside requirements set by OEMs before production ready models and specifications are handed over. In a letter the Indian stock exchanges, Hindustan Motors noted that the Ambassador brand (including the trademarks having application numbers 2803570, 2803571 and 2821821) and certain related rights (“Ambassador Brand”) by the Company (Hindustan Motors Limited) has been sold to Peugeot S.A for a consideration of Rs 80,00,00,000 (Indian Rupees Eighty crore). “The sale of the Ambassador Brand shall be effective upon fulfilment of the terms & conditions as prescribed in the said abovementioned agreement”, the note said.

Keeping in mind that the country has more than 7 lakh cars and over 4 lakh trucks and buses which have reached end-oflife stage, the Indian market has a huge potential for auto-shredding. By 2025, around 28 lakh cars and 12 lakh trucks and buses will reach their end-of-life stage. Reiterating this point, Steel Minister Chaudhary Birender Singh informed that the MSTC-Mahindra Intertrade state-ofthe-art auto shredding plant is likely to be functional in 2018. The Minister also emphasised that the Indian steel industry needs to meet the entire domestic demand of high-grade automotive steel, electrical steel and special steels from domestic production. He stated this while addressing the ‘Make In Steel’ Conference in the Capital. Those present at the conference included Dr. Aruna Sharma, Secretary, Steel Ministry, P.K.Singh, Chairman, SAIL, Prashant Ruia, MD, Essar Steel and Rita Singh, CMD, Mesco Steel. The Minister informed that the government was examining the feasibility of setting up scrap-based steel plants in India. “These will be on the lines of ‘Melt & Manufacture’ steel technology in USA. Scrap-based steel plants are environmentfriendly, energy-efficient and costeffective. These will have the capability to produce special high-quality steels, a pre-requisite for Make in Steel. I would like you to deliberate on the cost-benefit analysis of setting up scrap based steel plants in North and West India. These

regions are important from the perspective of scrap-availability and steel import hubs,” he said while addressing experts from the steel industry. India imports around 6 million tonnes of scrap steel every year and is the second largest importer of scrap after Turkey. By 2025, the Minister informed, India will be able to generate 7.5 million tonnes of scrap every year. “We are capable of producing autograde, defence-grade and other special steels in India. What we need to do is to push ourselves and to come out of our comfort zones. Then and then only can we be self-sufficient and strong,” he said. Emphasising on the importance of steel industry, the Minister noted that it is important for the country because it has one of the highest economic linkages in overall GDP. Steel has an outputmultiplier effect of around 1.4 times on GDP, so if steel industry grows by 1 per cent, its proportionate impact on GDP would be 1.4 %. The employmentmultiplier effect of steel is around 7 times, that is, with increase in output, steel industry has the potential to create 7 times the job opportunities, in upward and downward industries. “In 2016, India retained its position as the fastest growing major steel economy in the world. We are all proud of it, and we are confident that India would continue to lead the growth trend in world steel industry. All of us will have to work together for it,” he added.

Gestamp `260 crore investment in first hot stamping plant in India

Gestamp, a Spanish multinational company specialised in the design, development and manufacture of metal components for the automotive industry, has launched a new plant specialised in hot stamping in Pune (India). The company has invested Euros 36 million (approx. Rs 260 crore or Rs 2.6 billion) in the new facility that will provide services for Fiat Chrysler Automobile (FCA), Ford and Tata Motors. Raman Nanda is the Country Head and President, Gestamp India. The new Pune plant will employ 130 people in 2017 and will involve the introduction of hot stamping in the country.

Bajaj Auto has announced that it is ready to comply with EPCA’s direction of neither selling nor registering any pre – BS IV vehicle from April 1, 2017. The company announced that all its two and three-wheelers manufactured from January 2017 meet the stringent BS IV norms. The company claimed that It is probably the first automobile company to completely meet BS IV norms well before the deadline of April 1, 2017. The Central Pollution Control Board had Rajiv Bajaj earlier confirmed that BS III compliant vehicles could not be sold or registered anywhere in the country from April 1, 2017. However, some automobile companies have requested that this deadline be extended. Maruti Suzuki presents 15 new vehicles to Haryana Police Maruti Suzuki India Limited handed over 15 new vehicles (13 Ertigas and 2 Eeco ambulances) to the Haryana Police department on February 13, 2017. Through this initiative the company aims to support Haryana Police department in improving road safety on the Delhi Western Peripheral Expressway / Kundli-Manesar-Palwal Expressway in the state of Haryana. hen we speak of Eicher, we talk about rugged trucks, buses and motorcycles. When we talk about Polaris, we recall immense off road capability. Combine both of these brands and what you get is the Multix, a versatile utility vehicle for your daily family and business use. It combines the utility of a LCV (Light Commercial Vehicle) and a passenger car. We got our hands on this little innovation on the outskirts of Delhi where we beat it around some very rugged terrains and found out all about the versatility of the Multix. This is not one of those vehicles which will make your heart skip a beat but is rather a product which brings unparalleled utility. It is simple and

cute to look at and despite its small proportions is quite spacious on the inside. Offered in some striking colours, this Personal Utility Vehicle also gets ample of plastic cladding and uses a patented Flexituff compound on the body panels. Flexituff can resist most bangs and is quite durable, it is also a very economical to replace. The vehicle has been built on a strong tubular frame which can keep occupants safe in the advent of

a roll over. Powering the Multix is a 510.7cc, single cylinder, 4-stroke, diesel mill which churns out 9.78bhp of peak power at 3000rpm and 27.1Nm of peak torque from 14002200rpm. This naturally aspirated diesel engine is a work horse and solves its one purpose, to lug around its cargo efficiently. It returns 28.45kms to a litre of diesel and with an 11.5 litre fuel tank the Multix gets a decent operational range. The single cylinder, however, is noisy and NVH levels for cabin occupants can be irksome. The Multix is not quick, if

that is a question plaguing your mind but can reach a maximum speed of 50-60kmph. But do remember this vehicle was built with utilitarian purpose in mind and is not meant to transport you and your girl friend wearing those high heels to the nearest discotheque. The engine has been mated to a 4-speed gearbox. The gear shifts are a bit notchy but short throws of the gear lever come as a relief. What stands out the most on this vehicle is its independent suspension setup which caters for an incredibly comfy ride. Be it broken roads, farm trails or just bumps and breakers, the independent suspension setup on the Multix will gobble all undulations and keep its occupants seated comfortably. Another salient feature of the Multix is its short turning circle radius of just 3.93m, which makes maneuvering woes of goods carriers a thing of the past. We took the Multix through a tightly knit slalom course and were pleasantly surprised by the vehicles capability.

The steering has also been weighted decently and does not wear you out easily. All of what we have spoken of so far will not make your jaw drop, but what if we told you that this vehicle comes with the capability of pumping out water from a tube well or producing 3Kw of electricity to power your house or that it can be used to power a grinding machine to churn fodder or power a fan to blow the chaff off grain. The Multix comes with an X-Port which generates upto 3 Kilowatts of power and can be connected to agricultural machinery such as the ones mentioned above to aid daily operations and combine all of these in one single platform. Like mentioned earlier, this vehicle is a workhorse, it combines multiple uses and offers them as a single product solution, which at present is not being offered by any other manufacturer in the country. The versatility of the Multix does not end there. It gets a boot storage space of 418.3 litres and also comes with a

rear cover available as optional fitment which increases the storage space in the rear to about 840 litres. If that also falls short for your needs, the back seat of the cabin can be folded down and the rear window dismantled to create a storage space of 1918 litres. The Multix also packs hydraulic drum brakes on all four wheels, which are effective but lack the right amount of bite and feel, one does need to be a wee intuitive about the stopping distance and we felt sharper brakes would enhance its performance. That being said, the Multix does not go too fast, hence the present braking setup is adequate to bring this vehicle to a halt when needed. With a high ground clearance of 225mm, the Multix is capable of clearing most obstacles with ease. We got a chance to throw it around over bumps, logs and through slush. It gets adequate torque at the wheels and cleared most of the undulations without a fuss. It is also being offered with a host of handy after market installations which

increase its utility and appeal. The MX variant which we tested comes in at a price point of just Rs. 2.72 lakh (ex-showroom). The Multix is an immensely capable vehicle which combines practicality and utility for your business as well as personal usage. The vehicle does not come with a blower and is without an air-conditioner. But then the world of commercial vehicles is all about physical labour, hard work and sweat!
