It was a dream finish in the first two races of the Formula E 201718 season for Mahindra Racing as it walked away with a race win, a podium, pole and fastest lap. Felix Rosenqvist of Mahindra Racing inherited the race win in the 2nd race on Sunday, having finished second across the line from pole after Daniel Abt’s Audi was excluded for a technical infringement. Amidst two chaotic season opening races at the Hong Kong ePrix, Mahindra Racing came away with both heartache and victory. Third place on Saturday in the first race, for Nick Heidfeld, and a non-points finish for Felix Rosenqvist (due to a technical infringement) saw a positive, but less than ideal start to the season. However, Sunday’s race saw Felix Rosenqvist start from pole position, drop to eleventh

o “stand tall” means to behave in a brave, proud, or unyielding manner. The new Volvo XC60 exhibits precisely those attributes; it’s a brave product taking on the German flotilla of SUVs, it’s proud of its Scandinavian origin and it is uncompromising when it comes to safety, driveability and comfort. We check out the car to make sure we are right in our views. Volvo Auto India is bringing in the new Volvo XC 60 in one and only one variant --- the D5 Inscription model.

EXTERNAL FEATURES This new Volvo XC60 SUV is 44mm longer, 11 mm wider and 14mm shorter than its predecessor. The vehicle has a ground clearance of 230mm. The moment you see the XC60, it’s déjà

vu all over with the all too familiar design element. The car looks sporty and dynamic and everything about its design is very bold and uber. Be it the large grille with the vertical slats and the Volvo logo bang in the middle of it, the integrated roof rails, the mesh front, coloured sills and bumpers with branded Inscription, coloured door handles which come with illumination and puddle lights and not to miss the large LED headlamps or should I call it the Thor’s hammer DRLs which become even bolder when you turn on the indicators. Not to be missed are the fog lamps at the very bottom in the front spoiler and the headlight high pressure cleaning which is standard feature in the D5 Inscription. The smart looks in the front are carried forward gradually through a sloping body

line culminating in a very well crafted rear with large and exquisite looking tail lamps. One can notice a lot of chrome finishes all around the exterior, adding to the good looks of the car. Then there is this large panoramic sun roof that brings in a sporty and fun element. The car sits on smart 235/55/R19 Michelin tyres which are wrapped around gorgeous looking 10-spoke diamond cut alloy wheels. The vehicle comes with a lower profile temporary spare wheel of 125/80R18, something which I feel is not right for a country like India. It’s always good to have a full size tyre as a spare.

INTERNAL FEATURES Once you step inside the new XC60 it’s a world etched in luxury. The quality of seats, the touch and feel of the dash area,

the design elements all speak of high levels of sophistication. Volvo has not compromised a wee bit on the comfort and practical elements and those seated inside this car can soak into a pampered world. Driftwood decor inlays, leather upgrade on dashboard and the front and rear doors, leather gear lever knob, nappa leather upholstery, ventilated front seats which are power adjustable and come with memory, power adjustable side and lumbar support, power cushion extension driver and passenger side, back rest massage for the front seats, power fold of rear seats, power fold of rear head rests, ample storage areas and decent charging points, cigarette lighter, power operated tail gate, 12V outlet in luggage area, all this go to make the car so top notch that it can put to shame some of the products its

ENGINE AND PERFORMANCE The story of the new Volvo XC 60 does not start and end with its comfort and smart design elements. The car has a lot to offer on the go. This diesel SUV is powered by a 1969cc engine which produces 235hp and a peak torque of 480Nm. The engine is mated to an automatic 8 speed AWD transmission.

in essence means that this technology reduces turbo lag to a great extent, so much so that its power output is so seamless, yet so strong and linear. This car has to be bought to be driven yourself and if you are one of those high browed unlucky blokes who has a driver to take you around in this car, then all I can say is that you are missing out on a lot of fun. This is a driver’s car and offers so much sophistication shrouded in safety that you admire its engineering capabilities. There are several drive modes to choose from like Eco, Comfort, Off-Road, Dynamic and Individual settings. Full air suspension ensures that the car soaks up uneven surfaces. The car’s body height is adjusted according to its drive mode and speed. In Comfort or Eco drive mode, the body is lowered 10-20mm at higher speeds. In Dynamic mode the car body is lowered by 20mm in order to enhance handling and road holding. I tried driving on all modes and even with the paddle shifts and the manual D mode, each had to offer its own level of excitement and comfort. And when it comes to safety and convenience, the car has to offer a whole host of support systems, besides features like safety airbags, inflatable curtains etc.

www.motownindia.com

Acceleration comes easy in this new XC60 D5 Inscription model. So does braking. Then there are things like adaptive cruise control, pilot assist, lane keeping aid, and graphic head up display, a 360deg camera, hill start assist, hill descent control, blind spot information system with cross traffic alert, etc. I was particularly impressed with the radar enabled car which assists you to keep to your marked lanes at speeds between 40kmph to 160 kmph. The moment you try to change lanes without giving any indicator, the steering shudders gently and kind of coaxes you to get back. The car is like a teacher telling you to behave while driving. I guess this is one feature all cars in India should have!

VERDICT I want to emphasise that the new XC60 brings out the rich legacy of Volvo, i.e. safety and mixes it perfectly with sophistication, fun and adventure. If I had to describe the car in one word, I would simply say “Wow”. At Rs 55.90 lakh, ex-showroom, it’s great value for money.

he first time we laid eyes on the TVS Akula concept was at the Auto Expo 2016. The rich lines and aggressive design philosophy simply blew us away. Nearly two years later we found ourselves staring at a strikingly similar production ready motorcycle at the Madras Motor Race Track (MMRT) in Chennai. Not only has TVS managed to retain many of the design cues from the Akula concept but they have also ensured the Apache RR 310 is one of the most beautiful looking motorcycles this segment has ever seen in India. But is it only beauty? We check that out for you.

DESIGN AND STYLING At first glimpse the silhouette of the TVS Apache RR 310 is simply striking. In fact, TVS has managed to retain most of the design cues from the Akula concept with the Apache RR 310 getting a shark inspired design. The front sports Bi-LED projector headlamps which look mean from almost every angle you behold it. The fairing gets rich lines that

really stand out in the bike’s Racing Red colour scheme. The stance of the Apache RR 310 is quite sharp and aggressive. It is forward weight biased and gets a high raked tail. TVS has extensively tested the Apache RR 310 in a wind tunnel to finally render a shape which gets a best in class coefficient of drag. The fairing of the motorcycle also gets gill vents which we found to effectively blow away the hot air emanating from the engine. The rear sports a set of LED lamps that you will not forget easily. Every bit of construction on the Apache RR 310 boasts of a premium appeal and that is something you realise once you hop on to this motorcycle and ride it. The build quality, fit, finish and quality of materials all are exemplary and ensure the Apache RR 310 sits at the top of the table in its class. The rider seat height has been set at 810mm; the foot pegs and handle bar are all in sync to render a very comfortable riding posture and great ergonomics.

ENGINE AND PERFORMANCE Powering the Apache RR 310 is a liquidcooled single cylinder motor which is the same work horse doing duty on the BMW G 310 R. The engine has been fine tuned to produce around 33.5hp peaking at 9700rpm. The mid-range is meaty and the power delivery is linear. If you are looking for a punchy performance, it will be found in the lower gears right up to the third. The fourth, fifth and sixth render a more linear pull and opening up the throttle on a long straight sure feels delightful. The motor puts out an adequate torque of 27.3Nm peaking at 7700rpm. TVS has claimed it takes about 2.93 seconds to go from 0-60kmph and I can personally vouch for that. The RR 310 is not only deceivingly quick and can catch you off guard.

www.motownindia.com

That being said, the suspension has been tuned phenomenally well and is more forgiving. The RR 310 has been built on a trellis frame and gets an aluminium swingarm. TVS has installed KYB forks up front. The suspension coupled with the trellis frame and sticky Michelin tyres enables the rider with an exemplary amount of control on the track. The adequately rigid frame enables you to flick your line pretty easily and once you do commit to a direction, the RR 310 is able to stick with it incredibly well. Braking on the bike has been facilitated with a 300mm petal disc up front and a 240mm petal disc in the rear. The front brakes are on point and accurate while the rear feels more progressive. A little more bite from the rear brakes would have

made things more enjoyable.

VERDICT TVS is offering a very well rounded package on the Apache RR 310. We were quite impressed with this motorcycle in our brief stint with it on the MMRT. A few niggles we had with bike were small vibrations felt in the mid range and perhaps the lack of a slipper clutch while downshifting at tall revs, but this is purely nit picking and can easily be overlooked. All together each portion of the Apache RR 310 comes to form a very well engineered motorcycle and probably the most practical offering we have come across in this segment. It truly is not just a beauty to behold but also a beast to ride.

HEROES FOR THE

2018 HERO PASSION PRO

Report: Aakash S Paul Photography: Afsar Baig

I

ndia is the land of Gods, maharajas, temples, monuments, cultures, languages and, not to forget, the ‘common man’. Now, while the term has been used and abused a lot these days, my understanding of it is very simple and straightforward. The ‘common man’ is moved by the world around him and the world is moved by the ‘common man’. So

28 | MOTOWN INDIA | JANUARY 2018

if you have to make a mark as a brand, you have to appeal to the common man first and foremost. Hero MotoCorp knows this too well. After all, how does one stay in the twowheeler industry for so long and stand toe to toe with world class brands. Taking not a step but a whole leap in the same direction, Hero unveiled three new

commuter bikes - Super Splendor, Passion Pro and Passion XPro. Seeing the need to update, Hero refreshed two of its most prominent brands and we got a taste of what is on offer.

DESIGN & FEATURES Hero said that the design of the SUPER SPLENDOR was tinkered the least and that

was because they did not want to change the perception of the Splendor name that people have in their hearts. So there are some minimalistic changes in the form of new body graphics, a new tail-lamp and new side panels. So if you liked the looks of the previous Super Splendor, then you will be on-board with the looks of the new one as well. The instrument panel, however,

www.motownindia.com

is not as alluring as the rest of the design. While being a functional analogue cluster complete with a side stand indicator and fuel level indicator, it feels somewhat dated and Hero could have added a semi-digital panel like the Passion bikes. The 18-inch alloy wheels also fit in with the rest of the bike nicely. The seat is nice and comfortable and you get more storage space under it.

There is also a small, handy compartment under the right side of the fuel tank where you can store some additional items. The PASSION PRO has seen a lot more changes when compared to the Super Splendor. It is sleeker to look at from the side and in fact it feels as though the earlier Passion bike underwent a zero-size

workout. The bike gets flowing graphics that complement the curvy and muscular fuel tank. The automatic headlamp up front is also slightly better looking than before although the silhouette of the cowl is reminiscent of the old Passion. The instrument panel, as stated above, is semi digital and consists of a side stand indicator, a fuel gauge, a trip meter and odometer. The seat is large enough for two adult Indians and this time you have the option of adding a USB phone charging socket under it. The switchgear looks a little minimalistic but everything is within reach and feels sturdy.

the youth and the XPro manages to catch a few eyeballs. It gets elongated handlebar grips and a stylish X-shaped tail-lamp. The fuel tank gets small shrouds that enhance the looks of the bike. The headlamp unit, however, left me polarized due to its extremely swept back design. The instrument cluster as well looks the best on the Passion XPro with nice sections accommodating various metrics with the large analogue speedometer in the middle of it. Another visual addition that I like on the Passion XPro was the dual tone mirrors.

The PASSION XPRO is definitely the best looking out of the three and that is due to the company’s idea behind it. Hero wanted a version of Passion that could appeal to

The 2018 SUPER SPLENDOR comes powered by a 125cc single cylinder, torque on demand engine that has been tuned to churn 27pc more power and 6pc more torque than

before. The engine has been borrowed from the Glamour 125. Going through city streets is fun and the 11.4hp of power and 11Nm of torque feel adequate. The fourspeed transmission is pretty smooth to shift through. It is only when you switch to long and endless highways that you will notice the lack of a fifth gear and the fact that the bike starts to run out of breath around 70kmph. While the bike can touch a maximum speed of 94kmph, we did not have enough road and time to test the same. What we did have was a sand filled, uneven open ground that let us test the tyres and suspension of the bike. The telescopic forks up front and the 5 step adjustable spring at the rear do a fantastic job of soaking in some of the harshest terrains that

www.motownindia.com

#HEROMOTOCORP you will encounter in your daily commute. I felt very comfortable riding the bike through the unforgiving ground. The tyres also shine when it comes to maintaining contact with the surface below even if it is loose sand. I was able to take sharp turns confidently and the wider rear tyre helps a lot. The maneuverability is aided by the 124kg weight of the bike which is very manageable. While the braking felt decent, it was a bit surprising to know that the Super Splendor only gets 130mm drum brakes on both wheels and there is no option for a disc brake as of now. Once again the Passion bikes get the option of a disc brake and I wonder why. Buyers should also remember that the Super Splendor does not come with tubeless tyres and that is most probably done to keep the

cost low. While the company did not give any numbers related to fuel efficiency, something in the vicinity of 60kmpl can be expected from this bike and it does get Hero’s i3s (Idle Start-Stop System) which shuts off the engine when you are idling and brings back the engine to life when you pull the clutch. The PASSION PRO gets a bigger 110cc air cooled, single cylinder, torque on demand engine which you will remember seeing on the Splendor iSmart 110 as well. The unit strapped on the new Passion Pro (& XPro) has been tweaked to produce higher power and torque numbers. So the bike makes 9hp@7500rpm and 9Nm@5500rpm. Riding the Passion Pro after the Super Splendor definitely felt more calm and controlled. It can still do a 0-60kmph in 7.45seconds. The

engine is paired to a four speed transmission that I felt was the smoothest among the three bikes. The first 3 gears are where you can accelerate nicely while in the fourth the bike feels kind of laid back and is meant more for cruising. The suspension setup is similar to the Super Splendor and thus you get a largely similar experience. So if you plan to use this bike for daily city use and are not too much of an adrenaline junky then the Passion Pro can be a good option. We do not have the mileage figures as of now but a pocket friendly figure can be expected. Lastly, the PASSION XPRO feels very much like the Passion Pro because both the bikes share the same 110cc engine and you get similar power and torque figures. The suspension, brakes and tyres also remain

identical. But I did find the riding position a bit sportier on the Passion XPro due to the slightly longer distance that you have from the handlebar and the suspension being a tad bit stiffer than the Passion Pro. It is nothing gigantic and you will most likely not notice it unless you ride the bike one after the other. The rider seat height on the Passion XPro is also slightly lower than the Passion Pro but both the bikes are very accessible for riders of almost all sizes. One thing to note, however, would

be that the Passion XPro gets a 9 litre fuel tank which is smaller than the 11 litre fuel tank found on the Passion Pro.

VERDICT All three of these bikes will be launched early 2018 and thus we do not have any prices as of now. But knowing Hero, the company will pull a very competitive figure. With this lineup refresh from Hero, the company is trying to keep their beloved

and most sold products relevant and keep their sales numbers high. The Passion XPro will definitely see a lot of buyers for its contemporary looks and pocket friendly performance. The Super Splendor is very enjoyable to ride at sub 60kmph speeds but a little more refinement could have further sweetened the deal. The Passion Pro sits in the middle and will find love in the eyes of people wanting a simple yet effective daily driver.

Domestic autocomponent industry to grow 9-11% in FY2018 The Rs 2.90 trillion (FY2017) domestic auto component industry is expected to grow by 9-11% during FY2018, driven by robust growth expectation in domestic passenger vehicles (PV)s and two wheelers (2W) segment. As per an ICRA note, after considering the increasing content per vehicle due to various technological advancement as well as regulatory measures (emission, safety regulations), the growth in the auto component industry will be relatively higher than the underlying growth in the automotive industry in the medium to long term. ICRA’s sample of 48 auto ancillaries, constituting around 25% of the industry’s turnover, witnessed revenue growth of about 13.5% (revenue) during Q2 FY2018e. The same was driven by higher realization in the backdrop of steady increase in commodity prices, whereas volumetric growth was in the mid-single digit. Overall, during H1FY2018, the sample space grew by 9.5% which is in line with 9%-11% growth estimate for FY2018e. Exports which accounts for 28% of industry’s demand, with USA and Europe making up for 60%, witnessed a decline. This was sharper in the US M&HCV market during H2 CY2015 and CY2016. However, the trend seems somewhat reversed now with incremental order inflow for class-8 trucks being encouraging over the last six months. As for European markets, new PV and CV registration numbers have witnessed marginal growth YTD CY2017 and their growth outlook remains tepid over the near to medium term. Exports will also be affected by rupee appreciation.

TECHNOLOGY

Continental develops digital rear-view mirror without split screen Technology company Continental has presented the next generation of its ProViu Mirror digital side-view mirror. The new version of the camera system now has only one single image – and it’s large, seamless and intuitive for the driver. The various images from the cameras mounted on the side of the driver’s cabin are displayed on the interior displays as one single merged image by ProViu Mirror. This increases the visible area and reduces blind spots. “Instead of a one-to-one imitation of the traditional mirror, we’re now exploiting the full potential of camera monitor systems,” explains Dr. Michael Ruf, Head of the Commercial Vehicles & Aftermarket Business Unit at Continental. “Thanks to the Merged View display, the driver has an even better overview of the current traffic situation. This comprehensive visual check makes a major contribution to anticipatory driving and helps prevent accidents. One major advantage of the previous version has been retained – reduced air resistance, meaning up to two percent less fuel consumption,” he added.

In the ProViu Mirror system, two cameras are mounted on each side of the vehicle, covering the areas of the main side-view, wide-angle and close-range mirrors. The images are

transmitted to two displays on the right and left sides of the A-pillar in the cabin, so the camera images are permanently in the user’s line of vision.
