THE FIRST BMW ROADSTER UNDER 500 CC, A ‘MAKE IN INDIA’ INITIATIVE BY TVS It is official now, as motorcycle major BMW Motorrad has revealed its TVS collaborated 313 cc motorcycle at the EICMA 2015 show in Milan, Italy. The one cylinder, lightweight and powerful BMW G 310 R embodies the pure essence of a BMW roadster and according to a company release, it has neither too little nor too much of anything. The motorcycle will compete directly with the recently introduced 300 cc Mojo from Mahindra & Mahindra and even taken on the likes of Kawasaki Ninja 300, Benelli TNT 300, KTM Duke 200 and 390 and a few others. Developed in Munich by BMW Motorrad , the motorcycle has been produced in Bangalore, India in partnership with TVS Motor Company, the release added. TVS Motor is India’s third largest motorcycle manufacturer with a production volume of some 2.5 million vehicles per year. Newly conceived from scratch, the G 310 R represents

everything BMW Motorrad stands for: innovation, quality and many years of carefree partnership with its owner. Designed specifically for the world market, the BMW G 310 R can run on the most diverse fuel qualities, meets all emission standards and local requirements – and establishes BMW in the segment under 500 cc.

18 | MOTOWN INDIA | DECEMBER 2015

This new bike from BMW-TVS has an unmistakable visual kinship with athletic family members such as the BMW S 1000 R. The small headlamp mask with striking headlamp, dynamically modelled fuel tank trim elements and characteristic roadster proportions with a striking front section and dynamic rear give the BMW G

310 R a mature presence on the road. Precisely sculpted surfaces define the dynamic side view. The compact, dynamic proportions and the short wheelbase promise fast changes of direction, while the high rear conveys a lightness that is suggestive of the bike’s sporty genes. In spite of the clearly visible naked bike character of the BMW G 310 R, the side surfaces in body colour create a closed silhouette in athletic style. Highend details such as a standard upside-down fork, quality materials, supplementary fittings and excellent workmanship are best-in-class within the segment, clearly underscoring the premium aspiration of the BMW G 310 R. Innovative single-cylinder engine for dynamic riding fun and suitability The centerpiece of the new BMW G 310 R is a completely newly developed 313 cc liquid-cooled single-cylinder engine with four valves and two overhead camshafts together

The front wheel suspension is taken care of by a solid upside-down fork while at the rear there is an aluminum swingarm in conjunction with a spring strut that is mounted on it directly. Like all BMW motorcycles, the new G 310 R is fitted with ABS as standard. It combines a powerful brake system with 2-channel ABS. At the front wheel, a singledisc brake with radially bolted 4-piston fixed caliper and a brake disc diameter of 300 millimeters ensures powerful and stable deceleration. At the rear, this function is performed by a 2-piston floating caliper in conjunction with a 240-millimeter brake disc. The G 310 R instrument cluster has a large liquid crystal display that offers excellent clarity and a wide range of information. The motorcycle stands on tyres that are 110/70 R 17 at front and 150/60 R 17 at rear. It has a high-performance brake system including ABS as standard.

The striking feature of the engine is its backward-tilted cylinder in open-deck design with the cylinder head turned by 180 degrees, making it possible to position the intake tract at the front, viewed in the direction of travel. With an output of 34 hp (25 kW) at 9,500 rpm and a maximum torque of 21 lb/ft (28 Nm) at 7,500 rpm, the engine of the new G 310 R is a very dynamic partner in conjunction with the low unladen weight of 349 lbs. The new G 310 R offers a markedly relaxed seating position for relaxed, stress-free and easy-going motorcycling. As is characteristic of BMW Motorrad, all switches and controls are easy to handle. Great importance was attached to simple and safe operation, taking into account the most diverse rider anatomies. Extremely compact and with a broad spectrum of ride responsiveness, ranging from comfortable to sporty and dynamic, the new G 310 R simply opens up a whole new world of experience in its segment. TVS begins production of G 310 R motorcycle at plant in Bengaluru TVS Motor Company is the flagship of the TVS Group, which is made up of more than 90 companies in total. These include numerous firms that enjoy an excellent reputation in the automotive sector as suppliers for well-known car makers. Many of these suppliers from within the TVS Group provide the components for the G 310 R, it said. TVS Motor Company’s quality management system has been based on Japanese role models for many years. For the G 310 R, this system was extended to include the requirements and standards specific to BMW Motorrad, and within the area of quality management, there are interdisciplinary teams from both companies working in close collaboration. A dedicated production area has been set aside in the factory for production of the G 310 R. Mechanical production of the engine components is carried out on new, highquality machine tools made by

leading German manufacturers. BMW Motorrad was closely involved in an advisory capacity here and production is set up based on the model of the BMW Motorrad plant in BerlinSpandau. The engine assembly line is completely new and fitted with cutting-edge automation and testing technology for every stage of the process. All the relevant work stages are monitored and automatically recorded with regard to size accuracy, tolerances and bolt-

fitting values. The assembly is carried out in a completely sealed, glazed area which can only be accessed via air locks to prevent any dirt from entering. At the end of the engine assembly line, each engine is put through a test bench run where all relevant parameters are measured including output. Vehicle assembly is also carried out in a dedicated section of the factory reserved exclusively for BMW Motorrad. Here again, state-of-the-

art assembly technology is deployed. The final inspection is performed according to BMW Motorrad standards and includes electronic functional testing as well as a final run on the roller test bench for every motorcycle. The roller test bench is also completely new and set up according to Berlin standards. Furthermore, the staff were specially selected and trained by TVS for production and assembly. Additional training programmes were held for assembly workers together with colleagues from the BMW Motorrad plant in Berlin-Spandau over a period of more than a year prior to the start of serial production. NEW BMW R nineT SCRAMBLER: BMW Motorrad also presented the new BMW R nineT Scrambler, a motorcycle which revives the Scrambler era in a very special way. The new BMW Motorrad Scrambler features a classic air-cooled, punchy flat-twin boxer engine, which has stood for hallmark design, powerful torque and a unique sound for more than nine decades. The R nineT Scrambler is fitted with the air/oil-cooled boxer with a capacity of 1 170 cc. It delivers an output of 81 kW (110 hp) at 7 750 rpm, develops a maximum torque of 116 Nm at 6 000 rpm and, with the new engine mapping and a fuel system including carbon canister, meets the requirements of the EU4 pollutant class.

New BMW F 700 GS, F 800 GS: BMW Motorrad also unveiled the new BMW F 700 GS and F 800 GS. With the newly designed tank cover and a newly configured ignition lock cover, both models have an even more fresh and dynamic look. What is more, the elegant metallic appearance of elaborately electroplated elements is applied to the knee covers (F 700 GS) and radiator cover (F 800 GS) along with a partially engraved and newly configured model inscription, conveying enhanced high-end quality and a fascinating contrast with the painted surfaces. In order to ensure that optimum riding fun on the F 700 GS and F 800 GS is available to all riders, five possible seat heights are available for each model with four seats and the optional lowered suspension (ex works option). This makes for a wide seat height range of 765 mm - 860 mm (F 700 GS) and 820 mm - 920 mm (F 800 GS).

BMW R nineT Scrambler In both models, powerful forward thrust is ensured by the wellestablished, powerfully distinctive, liquid-cooled 4-valve 2-cylinder engine with a capacity of 798 cc, fuel injection and 6-speed gearbox. It provides an impressively spontaneous response, remarkable pulling power and a low level of fuel consumption. In the F 700 GS it has an output of 55 kW (75 hp) at 7300 rpm and develops a maximum torque of 77 Nm at 5300 rpm. In the F 800 GS, an output of 63 kW (85 hp) is available at 7500 rpm and a torque of 83 Nm at 5750 rpm.

With this fascinating new bike, Ducati enters the cruiser domain and does so in its own inimitable way, presenting a true cruiser but with all the design, technology and performance one expects from a Ducati thoroughbred. The XDiavel offers both the ‘low speed excitement’ that comes from the relaxed riding and forwardpositioned footpegs typical of a cruiser and the adrenaline rush of sports riding that Ducati has made its own. This is what the X in XDiavel stands for: the merging of two apparently separate, distant worlds on one bike, a superb combination where both are accomplished without compromise.

America’s Route 66 and great coast-tocoast trips are the inspiration for the MGX-21, a stunning 1400cc bagger, whose transposition from show bike to standard model (to be presented in August 2016 at Sturgis) has been achieved without compromise. Meanwhile, the new V7 II Stornello is firmly rooted in Moto Guzzi history, reprising the name, style and technology (colours, knobby tyres and high exhaust) of the very first Italian motorbikes to be transformed into scramblers in the 1960s and 70s, beginning with the original Stornello. EICMA saw the debut of the Aprilia RSV4 RF model year 2016, a further refinement of an already perfect motorcycle, which this year, adding to its 7 world Superbike titles, secured a double championship triumph with the Riders title (Lorenzo Savadori) and the Manufacturers title in the Superstock 1000 class.

Each piston skirt is tinned and resin coated, resulting in reduction of mechanical loss and greater combustion efficiency. Also, Low RPM Assist is adopted to help rider for smoother launching operation in low rpm range. By slightly raising engine rpm, it makes it easy to ride at low speed in stop and go traffic. Moreover, Suzuki Easy Start System, which enables the rider to just one-

push the starter instead of press-holding it to start the engine, is adopted, enhancing userfriendliness in daily usage. Suzuki plans to produce SV650 from January 2016 at the Toyokawa Plant in Japan, and start its sales in markets such as Europe and North America. Concept Model GSX-R1000: Concept Model GSX-R1000 is a concept model which has further evolved the GSX-R1000 by adopting technologies derived from MotoGP. The feature of the GSX-R series is the fundamental design consisting of running, cornering, and stopping, which has harmonized the body and the engine. It is currently being developed with aim to thoroughly review the design and balance running, cornering, and stopping in high dimension. To realise increase of power in high rpm range without detracting power in the low-tomid speed range, the newly developed 1000cc inline-four engine adopts the new Broad Power System, which takes in technologies developed in MotoGP racing such as intake VVT and Suzuki’s first electronic throttle for motorcycles. Weight reduction and optimal rigidity of the chassis is attempted through newly developed frame and swingarm. To largely reduce air resistance, cowling is also renewed. Traction control with selectable modes depending on riding condition is installed, along with quick shift system and launch control which are efficient electronics on racetracks.

After wins in Mexico and Brazil, Mercedes’ Nico Rosberg continued on his winning streak with a win at the Yas Marina circuit on November 29, 2015 to secure a hat-trick of victories for the first time in his career. Nico thus recorded six wins in 2015 and 14 in Formula One to date Lewis Hamilton, the champion of the season had to be content with the second slot. He was 8.2s behind his team mate to secure the Silver Arrows a 12th one-two finish of the year, breaking the single-season record of 11 they set last year. They also broke the single-season points record they set last year by two, despite the fact that double points weren’t on offer like they were in 2014’s finale. Rosberg incidentally is only the second driver to win from pole in Abu Dhabi, the 30-year-old having recorded his sixth successive P1 start on Saturday. If he scores pole at the first two races next season he’ll equal Ayrton Senna’s all-time

record of eight straight poles. “This is the perfect ending to the season for me - something I hoped for so much after a tough year. To finish with six poles and three wins in a row is awesome. I am so happy that I found some performance at the end of the season. I also made my peace with this track after the toughest moment of my career here last year, which is a nice feeling. Today was really a perfect race. The start, the pit stops and the tyre management were all really good and I felt like I had it all under control. Thanks so much to my team for this amazing Silver Arrow - everyone at the factories and the track has done such an incredible job all year. I would love to start the 2016 season tomorrow - but I know that´s not possible. It’s strange, I’m enjoying the moment so much - but I’m thinking already very much of next year what I could change and where I can improve. We will all now have a

well-deserved break with our families and I look forward to spending some more time with my wife and my little daughter,” Nico Rosberg said in a press statement. Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen came in for a third podium finish of the season, and along with it the points he needed to overhaul countryman Valtteri Bottas for fourth in the drivers’ standings. That’s the Finn’s highest championship finish since 2012 when he was third overall. For Sahara Force India, it was good news as Sergio Perez cemented his best ever championship finish of ninth with a fine drive to fifth place - the seventh time in the final nine races that the Mexican has

scored points. Daniel Ricciardo finished four places ahead of team mate Daniil Kvyat in sixth, but it wasn’t enough for the Australian to displace the Russian in the final standings, the duo finishing the year in P7 and P8, separated by just three points. It was a dismal year for McLaren Honda with 16 points and for Fernando Alonso it was even worse as he was out-scored by team mate Jenson Button. Frenchman unable to take up his place on the front row alongside the Julius Baer Pole Position winner Sebastien Buemi of Renault e.dams, the start had to be delayed as he was pushed to the back of the field. With no one directly alongside him, Buemi had a clear run into the first corner, and as was the case in the season-opener in Beijing, the Renault e.dams driver pulled away into a comfortable lead. But this would be no backto-back win for the Swiss, as his car ground to a halt as the race neared its mid-way point. With Buemi’s car stopped on track, the team opted to pit his team-mate Nicolas Prost as

this point, as he had also been suffering with his car cutting out. The early pitstop ensured the Frenchman took over the lead after the mid-race car swaps took place, but as he had to make his energy last for longer than his rivals, combined with his car troubles he was unable to prevent the trailing pack from passing him. Di Grassi took over in second following the pitstop phase, but only because Dragon Racing’s Loic Duval suffered an over-long stop. The Frenchman had briefly held the lead following Buemi’s troubles, but was now behind not only di Grassi but the impressive Team Aguri car of Antonio Felix da Costa too.

As Prost struggled with his car cutting out, di Grassi made his move for the lead. Behind them Da Costa and Duval entertainingly disputed third. Eventually both found a way by the Renault e.dams and Duval started to close in on the leader. But when a damper broke in the suspension of his car, his great run was ended and di Grassi was left unpressured at the front and duly collected the win. After one of the most eventful races in Formula E’s short history, the teams and drivers now have a well-earned break before the series resumes in the amazing beachside setting of Punta del Este on December 19.

Now however, they decided to build a new car as the successor to the SLS with their AMG division to take another bold step to stand in the firing line of an icon that has been refined and

perfected over 50 years and has received love and appreciation for its entire life, the Porsche 911. What they came up with is the Mercedes AMG GT S. A brand new supercar with a brand new and extremely light weight 4 litre biturbo V8 engine which only weighs 209kgs dry, producing 510bhp and 650Nm of torque mounted at the front. The turbos are mounted within the V of

A trans-axle 7-speed AMG Speedshift DCT at the rear has been carried over from the SLS, although it is more refined and has been perfected to go with the engine’s power going to a whole new rear axle with diff-lock specifically designed for this car. It has variable valves in the AMG Performance Exhaust system that open up to let you hear that gargle of the engine sound as you reach to 100kmph from a standstill in just 3.8 seconds in the loudest possible way.

So on a very busy day at the track we were all called to take a small little test drive to the Buddh International Circuit and see what all that actually felt like. However, due to a lot of people turning up, time was minimal. By the time I got into the car, it was dark. Usually they close down the track just before the sun goes down, but they made an exception if I promised to behave. They also weren’t letting people go

out alone on the track in broad day light, let alone me in the dark. So they had asked me to follow a former multiple DTM Champion, Bernd Schneider, who would be leading me in a CLA 45 AMG. At first I though it is going to be a slow lap and I will not be allowed to over take him I will have to take it easy and lift off most of the time. But with a back end of the CLA that looked so beautiful to stare at all the way, I didn’t mind at all. I didn’t have much time to understand what all the buttons do, how you use them and what they are for, we just started our journey down the pit lane with Schneider leading the way. So

Bernd Schneider, former DTM champion I left them in Race mode, the dampers in full performance setting and I wasn’t allowed to turn the ESP off because it was

so dark. I’ll tell you why I was glad that I wasn’t allowed in just a bit. I’ll take you through the lap, corner by corner around the track. With my headlights at full beam and not a single light on track to illuminate anything, I have never been so grateful for headlights, some things we just take for granted. I had a brilliant experience

of what it’s like to be racing in Le Mans at night. Seating position in the GT S is very low and you can get a sense that you’re sitting between the front and rear wheels. Ok so back to the driving. Turn 1, exit the pit lane at relative speed we turn in hard right and immediately I could feel the back starting to disobey. Turn 2, is a steep climb with a left kink where I could feel the back again trying to step out to brake into a blind right to Turn 3 which it felt quite happy and onto the back straight. Clipped the apex just and full throttle onto the long straight, the acceleration is just staggering, but unlike the SLS, it doesn’t puke all the power over the rear axle, this one is a bit more linear. I could see nothing but the beautiful tail lights of the CLA in front of me. I was closing in on the CLA as I expected so had to lift off nearly half way onto the straight, I didn’t see the speedometer to know the

exact speed I had achieved as I was busy trying not to rear end the car in front, but it was easily over 200kmph. Brake hard into Turn 4 to the 3rd straight that didn’t seem too long in this car and on the brakes extremely quick and drag the steering wheel to the left onto the challenging section of the track Turn 6,7,8 & 9. At full beam, it was so dark, all I could see were the entries up to the apex of the turns, the exit was completely blind. From turn 5, 6, 7, I nailed them perfectly because of the adaptive suspension and the feel of the steering wheel, so I gained some confidence and throttled up to the 4WD CLA to keep up, braked hard and turned in for the Turn 8 and 9. I probably clipped the sausage curb at the apex of Turn 9 and ended up having a massive tank slapper at the exit. If it was up to me without the traction control, I would have definitely spun out and hit something as I

www.motownindia.com

have seen this happen countless times in my experience in that very section of the track. Somehow me and the traction control managed to hold on and continue to fight another day, but only just. Followed by the massive tank slapper, was the long Turn 10 and 11 parabolic. I could see the CLA with its 4 wheel drive just pull away as I struggled to keep up at half throttle throughout the long right hander. I just couldn’t keep up as any more throttle would mean a full slide and I wasn’t ready to take the risk at night in anyway. I could see the lead car already at the next turn while I was still at the exit of the previous one. This time with a lot of runoff area, I went for it just one last time, and managed to hold on for the final 3 corners though thanks to the hydraulic

steering wheel I was able to manage the slides better, with an EPAS system, I don’t think id stand a chance. Near to the final corner, I closed onto the CLA and back into the pits. With this awesome experience I took away 5 major learnings. Firstly, how good that CLA 45 AMG really is with that 4WD system which I didn’t realise at first. Secondly, the AMG GT S is something truly handcrafted by racing driver’s and it truly shows how perfect everything about it is. Thirdly, the SLS would eat up its tyres in less than half the time the GT S ran on that day so the tyres have way

more grip and a longer life, though if you do treat it like a lunatic, you will shred them easily. Fourthly, the weight reduction and all the clever weight distribution done in the car is done so beautifully, it handles just so perfectly. And lastly I learnt that most people who say that Germans aren’t funny people, they are more of a serious bunch of people, have no idea what they are talking about. The Germans do know how to have a lot of fun, and how to have a bit of a laugh, the GT S proves my point. MI

Report: RAHUL KAPOOR / Photography: MOTOWN INDIA

f you remember some years ago, a chubby middle aged Scottish woman auditioned on Britain’s Got Talent, she went up on stage and the smug and pompous Simon Cowell thought ‘here comes another person who thinks she has what it takes to be a pop star.’ When she started to sing the crowd as well weren’t expecting her to sound like a power house that she was hiding inside of her. When she unleashed her voice, Simon Cowell was left with a feeling that can only be described by the sentence “A kick to the groin”. The woman went on to lose the competition only just, but released an album “I dreamed a dream” with the first song Wild Horses. She goes by the name Susan Boyle. Now, you must be wondering why I am going on about a Scottish singer when talking about the Audi RS7 Sportback. Well when I first drove the RS7, I thought it’s just a saloon with a lot of power, but too heavy to go anywhere or do anything. And then on an open road I floored the throttle and felt the same feeling that Simon Cowell felt while judging the show. The power is so immense that it was quite literally a kick to my groin. If you fiddle around on YouTube, you will find a video of the Audi RS6 Avant (which is sort of the same thing but a slightly bigger vehicle), drag racing on a damp track against a 900bhp McLaren P1 Hypercar. The Audi off the line badgered the million pound hyper expensive supercar all the way up to 4th gear because of its damn near perfect quattro all wheel drive system that thinks wheel spin is for the unintelligent. Obviously when the P1 finally found some grip, it destroyed it to the finish line, but think about it. A family estate car is quicker than a hyper hybrid car that weighs half its weight, and costs 10 times the price. The RS7 Sportback is mechanically almost the same vehicle as the RS6. It’s nothing less of a supercar that is way more practical, doesn’t draw as much attention, something you can drop your kids to school, your wife to the mall, and then you can destroy the tyres on the track later, the same afternoon. But it’s not a muscle car that just has lots and lots of power. Its way more clever, it has to be, I mean, it comes from Germany, a place where cars literally are quicker than saying the entire name of the engine and the technology kit in it. For example, the RS7 has a limited top speed of 305kmph and does 0-100kmph in 3.9 seconds because of the

powertrain that consists of a 4.0 Liter-V8-TFSIMotor mit FSI –Benzindirekteinspritzung, cylinder on demand, kontinuierlicher Nockenwellenverstellung, Nockenwellenantrieb per Kette und zwai Twin-ScrollTorboladen. Try saying that ten times. Basically it’s a twin turbo charged 4 litre V8 with direct injection producing 560bhp around 5700 to 6000 rpm and 700Nm of Torque just from 1750 all the way up to 5500rpm mated to a 8-speed tipronic sporty transmission. That’s all you need to know. But it’s not JUST brute force, its clever as well. The car comes with 4 driving modes. Comfort, Auto, Dynamic and Individual. As the names suggest in Dynamic, the air suspension systems all around are stiff, gear changes are lighting quick from that sublime DSG gearbox, the steering is heavier and responds quicker and the throttle is alive. In Comfort mode however, everything becomes lazy. The steering is lighter, the suspension is set to soften down, the gear changes are lazier and to save fuel, it can even shut of half its cylinders and become a simple 4 cylinder more economical engine. In Auto mode, the car decides when to change what on those same parameters upon driving inputs and in Individual mode, you can set them up as you please. Most 4 wheel drive cars are notorious for understeer, but the RS7 has a way around with a Torque vectoring system that sends more power to the outer wheels during the corner which is why this giant beast can corner quick, hard and flat. But a car that weighs 2505kgs yet being able to do what it can is quite literally the definition of “Unbelievable”. It does things it’s not supposed to. It’s a supercar with 4 doors, 4 seats and a massive boot. The interior is laced with leather, carbon fibre and Alcantara with the sole purpose of luxury, the seats grip you up like group of sexually excited people. You get the Matrix headlamps that you didn’t with the old one. What else can you ask for? Seriously what? I’ve had some friends from the fraternity come up to me saying ‘oh I’ve driven this and that car, it’s really fast, it corners like this, the suspension is like that’ and just keep going on and on. Then when I told them to try out the RS7, which I think is better than anything out there at the moment, they come up to me these days and say I’ve driven this and that car, it’s really fast, it corners like this, the suspension is like that, But the RS7 though…’. So just like Susan Boyle, if you haven’t heard her, don’t judge her. So... if you haven’t driven the Audi RS7, well you haven’t really driven anything. MI

AUDI A3 CABRIOLET

or once I was not complaining about the smog, the smoke, the pollution, the din and crumbling infrastructure of New Delhi. The Audi A3 Cabriolet with its top down somehow has this uncanny way of waving its magic wand and casting a spell on you. Topless beauties have a certain charm, no man can ever resist, and so was the case with the Audi A3 Cabriolet that I got to drive on the roads of New Delhi. The attention you get from around is like a high that kicks into your mind like an engine turbocharger. We took the saucy A3 Cabriolet for a spin and boy oh boy was it an experience. Just like that saucy lady on the beach, the A3 cabriolet is a blend of perfection. She isn’t really roaring for attention or being blatant about her beauty. This topless A3 is graceful and subtle in her style statement. The A3 is powered by a 1.8 litre TFSI turbocharged petrol motor which makes 177bhp and 250Nm of torque. All of these numbers convert into a top speed of 240kmph and an acceleration of 0-100kmph in a mere 7.8 seconds. This engine has a sweet purr like a wild cat and isn’t very loud and obvious. The petrol motors is mated to a 7 speed S-Tronic dual clutch automatic transmission which is quite smooth and seamless. While riding around in this topless beauty I couldn’t help but admit that German engineering has no alternative or comparison. The ride just felt so smooth as if to say the road was made of butter. That speaks volumes of the perfectly tuned suspension. The A3 rides on a set of 225/ 45 R17 Pirelli tyres which provide adequate grip on tarmac and makes cornering a pleasurable experience. The tyres have been set on a McPherson Strut suspension system in the front and a Multi-link suspension setup in the rear. The A3 cabriolet performs like any other Audi on the road. It has a very no nonsense approach and every bit of engineering performs as expected. Braking has been facilitated with a ventilated disc in the front and a disc setup in the rear. The overall handling and ride comfort of the A3 cabriolet is remarkable but the only turn off was a slight delay in steering response. The A3 Cabriolet looks quite like its hard top sibling but is faster and attracts much more attention. The fabric roof can be retracted in less than 20 seconds even if you are on the move but below a speed of 50kmph. The interiors are more or less the same as the A3. The Cabin feels luxurious and plush, the MMI display is handy and easy to operate. The A3 also comes with an automatic climate conditioning, an optional Bang & Olufsen sound system, ABS, Driver, passenger and front side airbags, traction control, automatic headlamps with a follow-me-home function, cruise control, parking sensors and many more such features to make the ride safe and pleasurable. While the top was down all things felt bright and beautiful but as soon as we pulled up the covers there was an immediate drop in our oomph factor. This car is definitely a head turner and nothing can replace the pleasure of topless motoring but how practical is this car? Well most cities in our country are really polluted and we did eat a lot of dust and pollution that day. We realised that once our adrenalins stopped being hyperactive, long after we had returned the car. The fact still remains that this car is a definite eye candy and it makes you feel good about yourself. The Audi A3 Cabriolet is available at a price of Rs. 44,75,000 (ex-showroom Delhi) and makes sense to own if you really want to feel like a rock star! MI

eing a petrol head, I have never really been a fan of the Automatic transmission. I feel that if you are a petrol head, and you opt for an automatic is just like a chef whose favorite dish in the world is French Fries. Volkswagen’s Polo GT has been the closest we have had to getting to a hot hatch for a while. The diesel GT TDI is the one with the manual, while the petrol TSI is the Automatic. Volkswagen has slightly updated both the GTs and I got to drive the TSI. With a 1.2 litre turbo charged 4 pot petrol engine in the front, producing a 103bhp and 175Nm of torque that kicks in at just 1750rpm all the way to 4100rpm, the power band is very accessible. The gearbox is what makes all the difference when it comes to this car. The 7-speed DSG dual clutch automatic transmission is the most sublime gearbox there is. It has 2/3 settings, in ‘D’ the gearbox changes at 2500rpm to keep the fuel consumption down. The problem with automatics are that in stop and go traffic, they are slow in reacting to when you need the power, but the DSG in the Polo GT is pretty quick in understanding the needs of the driving conditions on

www.motownindia.com

normal traffic driving. You could push the gear lever to the left and stick it into ‘M’ manual mode with the electronic sequential setting to change gears on your own. In Manual, the car will rev all the way until you shift, or it will shift only on its own when you just about to hit the limiter. Downshifting though is all on the driver which is great. It’s probably the only automatic transmissions that is the closest to absolute perfection and I wouldn’t have it any other way. In ‘S’ sport mode, the shifts are just so instantaneous, you don’t feel a single change. It revs all the way to its max every time if you stomp on the throttle and leave it there. But when you don’t, it does shift at about 3000rpm to keep everything tidy which makes perfect sense in terms of practicality. The petrol TSI is 40kgs lighter than the diesel therefore it does a 0-100kmph in 9.7 seconds while the diesel is just under a second behind and can only match the petrol version up to 183kmph, while the TSI can go all the way up to 190kmph. Where the petrol falls behind is in fuel consumption obviously but only just. The TSI manages a 17.21kmpl, 2.2kms less than the diesel. So it isn’t that less practical after all especially now that it comes with a new cooled glove box and a rear spoiler. MI

POLO GT 1.5L TDI Report: JOSHUA DAVID LUTHER / Photography: MOTOWN INDIA

O

ne of the most popular segments of the Indian car market is the hatch back segment in which some really exciting performance hot-hatches are on offer. Most of these cars make 100 plus bhp and offer power packed performance but an obvious riddle to solve is whether to buy a car with a petrol motor or a diesel mill. The diesel cars being offered in the Indian market today can match or even sometimes beat the petrol ones on offer. So we decide to settle the dispute using two of the most exciting hot hatches available – the Volkswagen Polo GT TSI and the Polo GT TDI. I drove the GT TDI while Rahul our motorsports ace drove the GT TSI. The GT TDI is powered by a 1.5 litre, 4-cylinder, Turbo diesel mill which can make 103bhp at 4400rpm and 250Nm of torque from 1500-2500rpm. All this power and torque translates into a top speed of 183kmph and a 0-100kmph time of 10.51 seconds. The GT TSI on the other hand produces the same 103bhp of power but at 5000rpm and only 175Nm of torque from 1500-4100rpm. The petrol motor reaches its peak power a shade after the diesel and does not have the same torque output but is lighter and hence has a better top speed and is quicker to a 100kmph than the diesel. Despite this the GT TDI is quicker off the line and that in itself is a big thing. Both the GT TSI and the TDI look exactly similar from the inside and outside but are two completely different cars altogether. The reason is quite simple, while the TDI has a 5-speed manual transmission the TSI has a 7-speed DSG gearbox. Now for some people shifting a stick can be a pain but for motor maniacs like me it’s an obvious choice. You can shift as per your needs and there is no need to worry about the car’s reaction time but with an automatic there is always a lag in response to the gear shift be it in automatic drive or manual shifting modes. The DSG gear box on the TSI how ever is lightening quick yet not as much fun as the manual stick on the TDI. While the TSI offers smooth acceleration the shifts on the TDI are jerky and you feel an instant punch when you slam the accelerator after shifting. The GT TDI weighs almost 39kgs more than the TSI and is nose heavy thanks to the diesel motor in the front. The TDI however does not feel underpowered at all and is fun to drive if you don’t mind the constant grunting of the diesel engine which does seep into the cabin. One of the advantages of buying a diesel is the better mileage derived. While the petrol TSI returns 17.21kmpl the diesel TDI returns 19.91kmpl. While both cars are the same on the features front they get a new cooled glove box for chilling drinks on the move. So for me the Polo GT TDI is an obvious choice thanks to the manual stick and the fact that it is quicker off the line than the TSI. MI

After pressing the start button and setting the drive mode, I simply moved the shift paddle on the steering. Via Drive Select Mode one can choose from three different shifting characteristics: Strada, Sport and Corsa. You can either let the gearbox shift automatically, or you can select gears manually by using the shift paddles on the steering wheel. Technical specifications of the car sunk in as I stepped on the accelerator of the left hand drive vehicle. The company had brought in a handful of left hand drive vehicles to the race track for the journalists. It was a breeze and the breeze simply got better as we drove on the straights.

The digital speedometer showed speeds of 230kmph at one point. The car was rock solid and planted strong and hard on the tarmac at these insane speeds and within moments when we had to corner, it obeyed perfectly to the braking. The driving dynamics of this super sports car is way awesome. The Lamborghini Aventador LP 700-4 has a 12-cylinder (V12) engine in its centre and it weighs only 235 kg. The 6498cc engine churns out a massive 700 hp and a maximum torque of 690 Nm. The engine is mated to a 7 speed ISR gearbox and its shifting time is only 50 milliseconds.

44 | MOTOWN INDIA | DECEMBER 2015

The permanent all-wheel drive makes sure your throttle input is being transferred perfectly onto the tarmac. An electronically controlled Haldex generation IV clutch is responsible for the power distribution. Depending on the chosen drive mode, it transfers up to 60 percent of the available torque to the front wheels. Everything about the car is perfectly fine-tuned and as Lamborghini says, “Our engineers make sure all suspension and drivetrain components are perfectly matched to each other.

A special suspension system, inspired by motorsports, is used in the Aventador. On the pushrod suspension with double wishbones a bellcrank is used to actuate the internal, vertically integrated spring and damper unit. This layout reduces the unsprung mass, improves the aerodynamics and leads to direct steering with minimised perturbation. The rear wing of the car has been intelligently built because at high speeds the air hits the

rear wing with high velocity which pushes the rear part of the car onto the tarmac and creates a downforce. As a result, the slip decreases, the tyres produce better grip and the engine power can be used more efficiently. A special feature of the Aventador is the integrated rear wing. It only extends when needed – at mid-range and high speeds. The diffusor on the underside of the car’s rear further increases the grip. It produces a vacuum by decelerating the airflow. car as it moves from 0 to 100 kph in only 2.9 seconds. In order to keep the weight of the car low, a lot of carbon fibre has been used. The car’s monocoque is completely made of carbon fibre. Aluminum frames, which are used to install components like engine or axles, are attached to its front and rear. These frames contribute to the overall weight reduction. Thanks to the use of carbon fibre and aluminum, the Aventador is very light and torsion-resistant. We realised this when driving at high speeds around corners, the car behaved so well. Before I could blink a few times, I had completed a few

laps. I had reached heaven and back and I was not complaining about this short journey. I had to switch my car now and drive the Huracan LP 610-4. No scissor door here, but a conventional one and once again I crouched into it to feel what it means to be rich, spoilt and carefree! Compared to the Aventador, the Huracan is simpler to look at. This too is a light vehicle made on a hybrid aluminum/carbon fibre frame. The Huracan LP 610-4 is a four wheel drive vehicle that is powered by a V10 90° IDS, 40 valves engines with a displacement of 5,204 cc. It delivers a maximum power of 610 hp @8250rpm and a maximum torque of 560 Nm @ 6,500 RPM. The Huracan has an all-wheel drive

with electrohydraulic multi-plate clutch 7-speed LDF dual-clutch transmission. I felt that the Hurcan was a bit smoother on the take and gear changes were not so pronounced as in the case of the Aventador. The car can attain a top speed of 325 kmph and can accelerate from 0-100 kmph in 3.2 seconds. Acceleration from 0-200 kmph comes in 9.9 seconds. We took a few laps around the Buddh circuit before the Lamborghini Instructor called it a day. Just when I thought I had seen and the driven the best of the Lamborghini cars, the company unveiled the Huracan LP 580-2. This is a two wheel drive and promises a lot of fun for those keen on a bit of adventure at high speeds. As I drove back to the real world of clumsy vehicles and clumsy drivers, I saw the the words plastered on one of the hoardings- “Speed thrills, but kills”. How stupid I thought, whoever wrote that does not have a clue on how the Lamborghini drives! MI

FEATURES & TRAVEL INTERVIEW WITH PAVAN SHETTY, HEAD OPERATIONS, LAMBORGHINI INDIA

“India is a strategic market for Lamborghini” The Huracan LP 580-2 was recently unveiled at the LA Auto Show. Now it’s already been launched in India. What does this signify for the Indian market and the people here? Two Wheel Drive has been a very important product even when we had the Gallardo. Around 65pc of the sales of the Gallardo range was 2WD. So without a doubt it is an important offering that we had to give when we brought the Huracan into the county. India is a strategic market, not just in the Asia/Pacific region, but also in the world perspective. A country with a high population, a country that has a lot of people who travel abroad, launching in India also has a good impact on customers worldwide where Indians are located. So it makes a lot of sense Lamborghini’s come with a lot of technical features, big powerful engines, traction control, two wheel drive, four wheel drive, are the Lamborghini customers able to understand and appreciate that? It’s a very distinct profile of customers who buy these kinds of cars. Around 85-90pc of our customers are so involved and aware that they would understand even the smallest difference. When I talk about a single clutch and a dual clutch, there is a really big difference for it to not pass through a customer. But our customers would understand and measure the presence or absence of LPI feedback through the steering. So when we talk about these cars we have to be really

opportunity to interact with customers in Asia and Europe. Primarily, I don’t see much of a difference in the customer profile. Most of them are travelled, well educated; they understand what they are buying and understand what is in the car that is going to meet their need. but I found the Indian customer a lot more indulgent in what he is buying, the kind of questions they ask are a lot more detailed. This experience I’m yet to have with an international customer.

precise on what we are talking about. In Europe and America, infrastructure is an absolute gem. So owners of these cars are able to drive them for miles and miles. In India sadly, a major part of India is not really drivable so are they able to utilize these cars like they are meant to be? If you had asked me this question in 2012, I would have agreed with you. But in 2015, I would give a different view. I know of customers who have Aventadors that have run 27,000kms. I know of customers who have driven from Chennai to Bangalore regularly in Gallardos for work. There are customers in Kolkata who drive very, very regularly, the trend is really changing. If not Pan India, but in places where people are able to stretch, they do, they drive a lot.

46 | MOTOWN INDIA | DECEMBER 2015

And for the shy ones, perhaps a day at the race tracks? I don’t think a Lamborghini customer is usually shy. It’s sometimes lack of options, but then they find their way out with track days or forming their own groups and finding a good stretch of road to drive together, have a lovely day and go back home. What is the difference that you have found among customers in India in terms of personality and involvement with Lamborghinis when compared to customers abroad? For me, I’ve had the

With the rear wheel driven Huracan here within days of global debut, can we also see the Aventador SuperVeloce and the Huracan SuperTrofeo in India soon? I’m glad to tell you that we have sold two SuperVeloces in India. One is a Coupe and the other is a Roadster. So we should have them very soon in the country. The Huracan SuperTrofeo on the other hand, is only available in Left Hand Drive at the moment, so due to restrictions, it’s not possible to get the SuperTrofeo here at the moment. MI

POLARIS PHOENIX 200 ATV

Unquantifiable Fun Report: RAHUL KAPOOR

Fitness is an important part of a person’s life. But in the modern urban world, no matter who you are and what you do to keep yourself fit, one must admit it’s an expensive affair. Any decent gym that will train you right and help you get fit, rather than help you build a muscular body to flog with no strength and substance just to flog it, cost anywhere above 50K for a yearly package. Going for a jog is healthy, but you’ll end up on a hospital bed because there is no escape from the pollution and dust in the air these days. However, there is another way. Thanks to Polaris, the makers of off road vehicles, there is now another way. They have vehicles for kids with 90cc engines all the way to turbo charged 1 litre monsters. The Polaris Phoenix 200 is a youth ATV for anyone who is above the age 15 and can manage the massive torque from the tiny little 200 cc single cylinder engine. The Phoenix is a small quad bike that weighs just 179kgs that’s just 5 feet long, 3 feet tall and 3 feet wide. It looks tiny and not intimidating at all. When you look

www.motownindia.com

at it, it seems like child’s play. So we decided to have some fun with it and see what it’s like. We went down to the recently inaugurated Polaris Experience Zone (PEZ) in Sonipat, Haryana. A small off road track designed by Polaris for Families and off road enthusiast alike who just want to have a good time and want to get a little dirty. Polaris has around 50 PEZs around the country. These PEZ’s are like your local Go Karting tracks where you can pay a nominal fee to drive around a few laps around their course. While Go-Karting is on tarmac, PEZs are more focused on offroad adventure sports. So anyone can come, pay and ride as long as you like. The PEZ in Sonipat is spread across 3 acres and we got to tear it apart to its last blade of grass. The dirt track around the compound includes slush patches, tight hairpin turns, water pits, tyre traps and small hills, a perfect blend of challenging turns and beginner friendly obstacles, but exhilarating for enthusiasts as well. The Phoenix 200 to ride is fairly simple, the throttle is like drive my wire button unlike motorcycles

and you have a few choices of brakes. A gear lever sticks out of the side which says ‘N’ (Neutral) ‘F’ (Forward) and ‘R’ (Reverse). So I stuck it into F and went for it. At first, sitting down I tried to get into grips on how to steer, throttle and brake on the move smoothly. I made some mistakes I’ll admit, but mostly because I had to get used to the controls. Not understanding how much lock at the wheels I needed, I went and hit a brick wall on my first attempt and beached it. So I got off the vehicle, and realised it was so light I could lift the vehicles with both my hands from the front tow bar. After getting the vehicle back on track me and the vehicle soldiered on. Gradually I got used to the controls and realised sitting down does restrict your steering abilities, so crouching and staying on my feet was the key to riding the ATV properly. I could corner harder and faster with more steering lock available while in the standing position and if I leaned in to the outside of the turn, I could balance the ATV better by adding more weight to the side,

and corner even quicker. The trick was to use the power to the rear wheels to turn in, not the steering itself. The more power, the better the cornering. It was just so much fun. I never thought that a 200cc engine can ever be more fun than giant car with lots of power. I’ll admit you get to do it more comfortably and luxury in a car, but on these off road ATVs, the amount of fun you can have is unquantifiable. You get such an adrenaline rush and all you muscles get pumped in just a few minutes from riding. But when the adrenaline subsides, you figure out the human anatomy very clearly with the pumped up muscular pain. It’s similar to going to a gym and spending hours and hours moving heavy things pointlessly and targeting a single point on your body. On the Phoenix 200, you work every single muscle simultaneously and repeatedly and you feel the pain for a whole week but you do it with a massive smile on your face. You can’t see the smile because of all the mud obviously, but you have a giant smile none the less!

Leather Couture with Indian Motorcycle

A

s winter begins to nudge its way into a smoggy Delhi, parties and launches too are raising their exciting heads. One such show was held at the Capital’s Select City Walk where in association with The V Renaissance (known for their bespoke art and luxury), Indian Motorcycle, part of the US based Polaris group, presented a Leather Couture fashion show. “The idea of this concept was to put motorcycling in a different level. Superbike motorcycling is all about luxury, customisation and bespoke. We found this opportunity to show luxury motorcycles with luxury brands and how leather jackets, accessories, helmets, and motorcycles and the safety that goes with riding these motorcycles, have all been gelled together in this particular show. We have showcased as many options for motorcycling, for riding, and how the two worlds of motorcycling and luxury can gel so well,” said Sandeep Bansil, Dealer Principal, Indian Motorcycle Gurgaon At the show, around sixteen different kinds of leather outfits were displayed by different models. “Of course some are very fashion oriented, yes, the helmets, the leather jackets etc are some things we would lie to associate our motorcycles with,” Bansil added. Indian Motorcycle is one of the oldest motorcycle companies in the world. Bansil said the company is doing good numbers here in terms of the quality clientele it is trying to target.

Hugo & Maximus HOW THE TWO PERCEIVE A CAR RIDE

I

Report: P. THARYAN

am sure a lot of you would have watched a crazy television commercial which shows dogs driving a car. It may look and sound ludicrous. You bet, it’s ludicrous, juvenile and plain baboonery. Dogs do not drive. Dogs simply love a car ride or they simply refuse to get into a car. Motown India experimented with two fully grown male dogs. One was a Golden Retriever who loves car rides and one a Labrador, who simply hates a car ride. This is the story of Hugo, the Golden Retriever

and Maximus, the Labrador. So why do dogs love or hate a car ride? Well, we simply cannot fathom that. You can ask the dogs! But travelling with your beloved pet in a car needs to be done with utmost care, or else you can end up killing or maiming your pet. You must be wondering why pets need to be carefully transported in a car, when more than half of the Indian population drives around in cars throwing all caution to the winds. No seat belts, children seated in mothers’ laps in the front seats, no child seats, child seated on his father’s lap while dad has one hand on the steering wheel and one around his child....all these are scenes that are

50 | MOTOWN INDIA | DECEMBER 2015

witnessed over and over again on a daily basis on Indian roads. We are tired of lecturing them. So why not give a bit of advice on how to deal with your pets while driving. Pets need to be restrained while being driven around in a car. Whenever you plan a long drive, always keep a few things in mind. Your pet should be properly restrained and that too at the rear seat. Fronts seats are not for children and pets. Restraining is very important for two reasons. One, if your pet is roaming free in your car, that will lead to distracted driving. Two, in case of any accident or crash, it could be dangerous to your pet,” advices Dr Anuj Synghal, veterinary doctor in the capital who specialises in pet care and surgery. Dr Synghal goes to the extent of advising that one must always transport one’s pets in a crate or a carrier that is properly ventilated so that the pet can comfortably stand and sit in it. This carrier or crate should be further buckled up to the rear

www.motownindia.com

FEATURES & TRAVEL Your pet should be properly restrained and that too at the rear seat. Fronts seats are not for children and pets. Restraining is very important. seats by seat belts or by any other means. In India this seems too far-fetched. “The second best option is to restrain your dog in the rear seat with a seat belt. Or a person can sit in the rear seat and hold the pet by the leash or collar. Restraining is very important in the case of cats and puppies. They really do not like being in the car. Sometimes what happens is they try to hide under the control panels. This could lead to an accident,” he says. So while Hugo was all smart and energetic when it came to a ride in a car, Maximus refused to budge the moment the word “car” was mentioned to him. You find this trait among humans too. Some enjoy car rides, while others abhor it. Hugo, the moment he heard the engine of the Mahindra Scorpio come to life, he was tugging at his leash to get inside the vehicle. The scene was quite opposite with Maximus. He merely sat on the ground and refused to move at the sight of a car. “If a dog is not car friendly, then it is important that the owner of the pet makes it car friendly. You have to devote a bit of time to make the pet car friendly. For a few days you have to sit with your pet in the rear seat of your car with some snacks or toys. Without driving around, you need to spend around 20 to 30 minutes in the stationery car. Once the pet is used to the car, then you need to take the pet for a short drive, maybe for five minutes initially and then one can increase the time. Slowly and steadily, the pet will get used to the car. Once the pet gets used to the car, you can go for a longer drive,” says Dr Synghal. And in case your pet has motion sickness, there is a solution there too. “Motion sickness is very common among dogs, particularly puppies. In puppies, the equilibrium system which is in their ears is not fully developed. But as they grow, this system develops and the motion sickness reduces. Also, never take a pet for a drive on a full stomach or on an empty stomach. It is best to feed the dog three to four hours before the drive. But there are medications available in the market that reduces the motion

www.motownindia.com

sickness among the pets. They help in sedating the dogs as well as help in reducing the nausea and vomiting during car rides,” the vet concludes. Thankfully, neither Hugo nor Maximus knows how to drive. As for the dumb TV commercial, it sucks big time! MI

THE KHYBER HIMALAYAN RESORT & SPA GULMARG BY JYOTI BALANI

ach time I visit Gulmarg, I feel mesmerised at God’s ethereal creation and how nature can be so breathtakingly beautiful. Gulmarg as a destination was relatively unexplored until The Khyber Himalayan resort and Spa started three years ago and since then it has witnessed a rise in the number of travelers making it a must visit destination in Kashmir. Located at an elevation of 8,825 ft in the Pir Panjal range of the majestic Himalayas, The Khyber, Himalayan Resort & Spa,

Gulmarg, is one of the highest hotels in India. Spread over seven acres in a pristine pine valley, this beautifully designed resort, offers breathtaking views of snow capped Affarwat peaks. The Khyber Himalayan Resort & Spa houses eighty rooms, four luxury cottages and the Presidential Cottage. The interiors are designed with traditional materials and showcase fine Kashmiri crafts. Luxury balcony rooms with private balconies are perfect to sit and sip morning tea while watching the first rays of daybreak in

the midst of pine trees and snow capped mountains. Each room features a separate dressing area, leading to a plush bathroom with a sunken tub where large picture windows offer brilliant views. The resort is a foodies’ delight what with the various choices that it offers a guest. At Cloves, there’s something for everyone as this restaurant serves world cuisine and offers panoramic views from its windows. Make sure you try the Wazwan, the traditional Kashmiri feast, served by able waiting staff. The Chaikash Tea Lounge named

after the Kashmiri word for soaked tea leaves, is a space as refined as the teas, coffees, tisanes and kahwah that can be enjoyed here. The Tea Lounge opens onto a terrace which flows further down to a series of cascading terraces, ideal for al fresco dining and mountain-gazing. At Calabash, the cigar and sheesha lounge, there is a range of cigars for those who enjoy lighting up one. There is also an assortment of flavored tobaccos in the sheesha.

FEATURES & TRAVEL The sprawling resort includes the beautifully landscaped Paradeez gardens and an amphitheatre; retail outlets; ski shop; with more than 10,000 square feet of meeting, banquet and event space. In addition to skiing, other popular winter activities include snowboarding, sledding and horse drawn sleigh rides. The Khyber Himalayan Resort & Spa offers a host of spring and summer activities including trekking, golf, mountain biking and normal biking, gondola rides, horse riding, rock climbing, trout fishing, photography safaris and jeep excursions. The Khyber Spa by L’Occitane located within the resort provides an experience of Provence in Gulmarg along with stunning views of the valley. With three single treatment rooms and two couple suites, each with its own private steam chamber, the spa is an ideal place to unwind and offers a range of rejuvenating massages, body scrubs, facials, wraps, body technical treatments, area focused treatments and wet treatments. I tried The Lemon Balm Signature massage which is a blend of Balinese, Swedish and acupressure massage techniques that rebalances the skin and revives the inner energy through the senses. Swedish effleurage strokes, Chinese acupressure and Balinese massage techniques combined to stimulate circulation and ease tensions along with the use of Aromachologie essential oils such as Lavender, Tea tree and Geranium ensure complete relaxation which I experienced after going for the Relaxing Aromachologie Massage. A major tourist attraction located close to the resort is the Gulmarg Gondola, the highest ski lift in the world. It takes several hundreds of visitors and skiers per day to Kongdoori Mountain on the

www.motownindia.com

shoulder of Mount Affarwat, the highest ski point in the Himalayas at 13,780 feet. Reaching the highest ski point was a surreal experience even though it was really cold up there. While in Gulmarg, it is a good idea to drive down to the Maharani Mandir also known as the Mohineshwar Shivalaya which was built by Mohini Bai Sisodia, the wife of the ruler of Kashmir Maharaja Hari Singh (the last King of Kashmir). The temple is looked after by Ghulam Mohammad Sheikh, a Kashmiri Muslim. He decided to look after the temple after the Kashmiri Pandits left the valley

and there was no one to look after the temple. His father was the Chowkidar of the temple for almost 40 years. Other attractions in Gulmarg include St. Mary’s Church which is a century old relic from the British era and one can also visit the Baba Reshi Shrine which lies at about 5 km on the outskirts of Gulmarg. While one is in Kashmir, it would be ideal to experience a stay in a houseboat at Srinagar. A stay in Mascot Houseboats on Nageen Lake was like an icing on the

cake after a fabulous stay at the Khyber. These splendidly designed houseboats make for comfortable stays and showcase the warmth of Kashmiri hospitality. All the rooms in the houseboat were very well furnished and decorated with Kashmiri carpets, the bathrooms were fitted with modern amenities and there was an able attendant who catered to all our requirements such as meals, tea, etc. MI

t’s wakey, wakey time for the Indian commercial vehicles (CV) industry . After a long phase of sluggishness in the Indian CV market, things are beginning to look up. For the seven months of fiscal 2015-16 (April to October), production of total commercial vehicles has increased to 429,369 units from 392,927 units in the corresponding period last year, signifying a 9.27pc growth. Total domestic sales increased from 345,494 units in April-October (2014-15) to 373,191 units in the same period in 2015-16. This signified a growth of 8.02pc. Exports too showed an increase of 17.95pc from 48,736 units last year (april-October) to 57,482 units this year (April-October). So is the commercial vehicle industry in India out of the woods? Not really, if one were to carefully look around and analyse the data released by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM). The CV data includes the production, sales and exports of AMW, Ashok Leyland, Force Motors, Mahindra & Mahindra, Piaggio Vehicles Pvt Ltd., SML Isuzu, Tata Motors and VECV-Eicher, VECV-Volvo. It does not take into account the sales of Daimler

India, Scania Commercial Vehicles and Volvo Buses. According to a recent ICRA Research Services report, “In line with previous year, the recovery in the CV segment continues to be supported by the M&HCV (Truck) segment on back of replacement demand (following over two years of deferment), improving operating economics and continuation of discountled push by OEMs. In contrast, the LCV (Truck) segment has declined owing to overcapacity issues and adjustments in the financing environment (i.e. tighter lending norms). During the current fiscal, bus sales have also improved; having grown by 14.3% vis-à-vis the prior year on back of JNNURM backed orders by State Transport Undertakings (STUs) and pick-up in demand from school/colleges segment. “Our recent channel check with fleet operators suggest that operators’ cash flows are on improving trend following sharp drop in diesel prices and relatively stable freight rates even as demand for cargo continues to be subdued,” said the ICRA research. The CV market comprises Medium

COVER REPORT & Heavy Commercial Vehicles (M&HCVs) as well as Light Commercial Vehicles (LCVs). Within these segments are sub segments comprising passenger carriers and goods carriers.

M&HCVS LEAD THE WAY For the first seven months of fiscal 2015-16, it was the M&HCVs segment that showed outright positive growth. In this segment, 25,305 units of passenger carriers were sold n the domestic market as compared to 20079 units the corresponding period last fiscal, registering a 26.03pc. Goods carriers recorded an even better growth in the domestic market with sales of 136201 units (102032), registering a 33.49pc increase. Total increase of M&HCVs translated into 32.26pc. Production in the M&HCV segment too increased by overall 28pc, with goods carriers

COMMERCIAL VEHICLES SPECIAL registering 31.44pc with 154195 units (117312) in April-October 2015. Passenger carriers grew by 12.78pc to 29,902 units (26513). As far as exports is concerned, the M&HCVs grew by 12.6pc with goods carriers growing by 17.39pc with 13289 units (11320) and passenger carriers growing by 3.63pc with 6260 units (6041). Tipper sales, according to the ICRA report, have continued to remain subdued as mining activity in some of the affected regions is yet to pick-up. In addition, overcapacity in some of the states, especially, Goa and Karnataka continues to be a dampener for new CV sales. Besides mining, demand for tippers from the infrastructure space has also been muted pace of pick-up in infrastructure projects, slowdown in the housing segment and stretched working capital cycle of contractors.

The performance of the LCV segment was however disappointing with domestic sales slipping to 211685 units in the first seven months of the current fiscal from 223383 units registered in the corresponding period last year. This meant a minus 5.24pc drop in sales. This was largely because of a 7.2pc negative growth in the LCV goods carrier segment. In the domestic market this category of vehicles sold 182,670 units as compared to 196865 units last year from April to October. But the LCV passenger carriers sold 29015 units this fiscal (April to October) as compared to 26518 units recorded in the corresponding period last year. This translated into a 9.42pc growth. Production of LCVs too dipped by 1.54pc (-). Goods carriers LCVs production fell by 2.09pc (-) to 217445 units as compared to 222078 units in April-October

2014-15 fiscal. Passenger carriers production increased by 2.97pc to 27827 units (22024) in the same period. Exports of LCVs too witnessed a growth, registering 20.90pc mainly contributed by goods carriers with 22.76pc growth. Exports stood at 35586 units (28988), while passenger carriers registered minus 1.68pc degrowth in export. Exports of such vehicles were 2347 units (2387). In ICRA’s estimates, the M&HCV (Truck) segment is likely to register a growth of 12-14% in FY 2016 driven by continuing trend towards replacement of ageing fleet, improvement in operating economics of fleet operators and some prebuying. The mandatory introduction of Anti-Lock Braking Systems (ABS) came into effect from October 2014. In the nearterm, CV sales will also benefit from gradual progression to BS-IV

TOTAL emission norms (All India coverage by April 2017). The LCV segment may remain subdued in FY 2016 (down 2-4%) as segment’s prospects continue to be influenced by overcapacity issues and constrained financing environment amidst rising delinquencies, said the ICRA

research report. Nevertheless, driven by certain structurally favourable factor, the segment’s growth prospects over the medium-term remain intact. Some of the factors that are likely to support steady demand for LCVs going forward include a) further proliferation of “Hub-

TOTAL n-Spoke” logistics model with the implementation of GST, b) relatively untapped potential in i-urban and rural areas and c) improving urbanisation levels. “With new orders placed by SRTUs (under the JNNURM programme), we expect the overall bus segment to register

a growth of 8% - 10% during FY 2016. Within the segments, the M&HCV segment is likely to outperform on account of JNNURM orders, revival in demand from Private Carriers (that contribute almost 1/3rd to M&HCV Bus Sales) and low base effect,” the report added.

If we look at the announcements in the press and the position of Coal India to double its output for the next five years, the new coal blocks or iron ore and bauxite all of that is in the right direction. It is clubbed with the will of the government to develop electricity with the new power plants and we are here to capture the momentum. The over dimensional cargo segment is also going in the same direction as there is a need of more infrastructure, equipment and we are definitely capturing that with our tractor solutions. Right now we have a well balanced setup for our production here. We will later see the opportunities to export but for now there is a lot to do in India. - PIERRE JEAN VERGE SALAMON, President, Volvo India Private Limited

hese machines move heaven and earth, when it comes to building a nation’s infrastructure. Mining, construction, infrastructure building, transporting....these massive machines assist man in his journey to progress. At the Excon 2015, there were plenty of them, vying for attention among hundreds and thousands of visitors, both from India and abroad. The largest construction equipment exhibition in South Asia, Excon 2015, organised by the Confederation of India Industry (CII), India’s premiere trade body was held from November 25 to 29, 2019 In Bengaluru, Karnataka. This was the 8th edition of this prestigious show. The Excon 2015 was inaugurated by Nitin Gadkari, Minister of Road Transport, Highways and Shipping, Government of India at the Bangalore International Exhibition Center (BIEC). So what was this show all about? Spread across 2,20,000 Sq.mts of exhibition display

area, this show saw participation from 810 exhibitors from 22 countries with country pavilions from China, Finland, Germany, Italy, South Korea, Spain, Turkey & UK. More than 200 product launches were witnessed during the 5-day show. Apart from new machine launches, there were industry conferences by CII, BAI and ICEMA and B2B meetings. International buying delegations keenly waded through crowded stalls and pavilions to strike exciting deals for their respective companies. A brief look at some of the important launches and displays:

VOLVO TRUCKS Volvo Trucks launched the largest capacity multiaxle dump trucks for Indian mining in Excon 2015. The company launched two new large capacity 5 axle dump trucks for various mining applications viz the FMX 520 10x4 dump truck with 26.1 Cu.m body and FMX 480 10x4 dump truck with 24 Cu.m body. Volvo Trucks is the only manufacturer to offer a higher

capacity 5 axle mining dump trucks in India which is based on the successful and globally proven Volvo’s FMX platform. These new high capacity dump trucks are being introduced to enhance the productivity in line with the increasing demands of coal production. The FMX 520 10x4 dump truck offers a 33pc higher capacity and the FMX 480 10X4 offers a 28pc higher capacity compared to the current 8X4 solutions available in the market. Volvo Trucks also showcased a highly customized coal haulage solution with 33 Cu.m bodies which is the largest coal haulage truck in the Indian market along with their flagship model the FMX 440 8x4I shift. Unveiling these trucks, Pierre Jean Verge Salamon, President Volvo Group Trucks India, said that he is very positive about Indian growth story and optimistic about the Government’s plans to double the coal production to 1bn tonnes by 2020. He believes that the next 5 years will open up several new opportunities in the coal mining which will redefine productivity and

efficiency demands. Anticipating a paradigm change in the mining industry, Volvo has invested significantly in bringing in these new products that are ready to take on the future demands of coal mining. Salamon further reiterated Volvo’s commitment to the Indian market and mentioned that Volvo Trucks is the No.1 preferred truck brand having around 65pc market share in the high performance mining segment. Volvo Trucks has been driving progress by pioneering in introducing innovative products and services which has set new benchmarks in the Indian mining industry. These trucks are technologically most advanced and the safest trucks to operate in the high demanding and toughest mining conditions. Talking on customer value creation, Vinod Aggarwal, CEO, VE Commercial Vehicles, said “We believe in creating and delivering value to our customers with our comprehensive offering which helps to improve their productivity and profitability. Comprehensive offering includes

There is a definite positive mood in the business environment because the coal mining industry is already out of the woods and is on the growth path. There is also a positive sentiment that the construction sector should start growing soon. Coal mining production has to go up from 600 million tonnes to 1.5 billion tonnes in the next five years both for Coal India and the private blocks which are going to open up. The government has also declared their intentions more and more that they will not cut down the planned expenditure to meet their fiscal deficit targets and GST is a very positive move which we look forward to coming through in the winter session of parliament. So we are optimistic with the infrastructure investments which are also going to happen. The construction segment should pick up. - VINOD AGGARWAL, CEO, VECV

GST will definitely be a welcome move when we look at the whole tax structure and flow of goods in the country and all the interstate movements will benefit from this. We are currently focused on the domestic market at the moment but we will explore opportunities for exports later. With the coal production increase in the country we have had a 35pc growth in sales this year and we are quite positive about increase next year. Looking at the past track record of 18 months of the current government and the steps taken to improve ease of doing business we may be able to achieve 5060pc of target set by the planning commission. - G V RAO, VICE PRESIDENT, Product Strategy, Brand & Marketing, Volvo Trucks Volvo’s best in class aftermarket onsite support with more than 130 touch points which is considered as the benchmark in the mining industry and also the recently launched Volvo Financial Services to meet the customer financing requirements”. Be it vehicles for agriculture, construction, distribution, transit buses, school , etc, Allison Transmission is in the forefront of fully automatic transmissions. Allison’s patented torque convertor efficiently multiplies engine torque and smoothly transfers it into the gearbox. This fluid coupling component provides a controlled, cushioning effect that virtually eliminates driveline shock. An Allison fully automatic transmission increases power while a manual or automated manual transmission (AMT) loses power with every shift. An Allison Automatic eliminates power interrupts so you can accomplish more, even with a smaller engine. Operators get better startability, faster acceleration, and better traction and drive wheel control. Fleet owners get reduced maintenance costs, additional driver ease, increased fuel economy and improved productivity. INTERVIEW WITH S. GOPAL, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, AJAX FIORI What are the new products you are showcasing at the Excon 2015? We have been participating right from the conception of the EXCON. We are a regular exhibitor at this expo which is one of the most significant expos in this part of South East Asia. We are playing in the field of concreting and everything we do is to enable customers to produce concrete, to transport it and to pump and place it as well. So we are a full liner in concreting equipment. The products that we make are one of our flagship products is called a Self Loading Concrete mixer. We have three sizes of this model and it is an extremely popular product amongst the deep rooted contractors and sub contractors over the length and breadth of the country in Tier 2 & 3 cities. This is a product which is exclusively to cater to Tier 2 & 3 cities and also for first time and repeat entrepreneurs. We are making this product in a joint venture with an Italian company called Fiori whose owners are the pioneers of this product. This is a 70 year old company and this joint venture was formed in 1992. That is one flagship product which self loads all the material for producing concrete, mixing concrete and transporting it to the site and placing it. So it is a 3-in-1 kind of product. We make that in 1Cu M, 2Cu M and 4Cu M capacity. We also make a mass producing batching plant. One of the features of Ajax Fiori is that every product we make has a unique feature which does not need any supporting equipment to be complimented. So the batching plant is a mass producing batching plant. Our plant is unique in terms of it being a self-loading batching plant. We also make a stationary compact batching plant. We have also introduced a concrete pump. Having produced and transported concrete we need to pump

The last two months have been very encouraging. All our peers have done well be it earth moving or metal handling. Last year Ajax Fiori made Rs 330 crore and this year we expect a growth of atleast 15pc over that. The Planning Commission made an estimate of USD 1 Trillion by 2017. Do you feel that that target would be achieved? It is quite unlikely, 50pc of that time period is over and those kinds of investments have not taken place so far but things will surely move up. The first half of the five year plan has not been very encouraging in terms of spending. The new government came in last year and they seemed to have put their act together. They are also trying to open different fronts but to meet the target would be difficult.

the concrete for multi-storied buildings. So it requires a lot of intricate technology in terms of the ability to handle abrasiveness. So we also make concrete pumps of two sizes. We also constantly take feedback of customers and innovate along those lines to provide new solutions. The construction industry has gone through a bad phase in the recent past, would you say things are looking up now when we see a few sectors emerging out of the woods? Certainly, the mining sector is looking up both for coal and iron ore . In terms of thermal power plants, things are looking up

76 | MOTOWN INDIA | DECEMBER 2015

and therefore it spurts growth of construction equipment. Roads and irrigation are another two major areas which basically cater to rural India. Things appear to be looking up now. For the concereting equipment industry in the last 6 months we have been fining things quite healthy and looking up. We can see new projects coming up and things are taking shape. The government’s intention of connecting roads and bring connectivity seem to be quite positive. To reach the kind of growth we were seeing in 2006-07 we probably need another year. But I think this year we have seen a modest growth of 15pc compared to previous years.

In terms of your company’s capability what are we looking at? We are currently doing 50-60pc of our current installed capacity. We have prepared ourselves in a proactive way to cater to this and this is a company which has always been investing ahead of time. We have very recently invested about 20 acres of new land and 10,000 sq. mt. Of new shop floor exclusively to make one of the products and we are always investing almost 3-4 years ahead of time. We have a pan India presence and it is one of the very few companies of our time to have the foresight to create a pan India presence at least one or two years in advance. Today we have 5 regional offices and 6 spare parts depots across the country. We have also started appointing dealers. Hitherto we were selling off the front line. Out of our total man power more than 60pc are customer facing. So we invest on manufacturing facilities, sales, distribution, stocking points and touch points for customers.

INTERVIEW WITH SALIL GUPTA, DIRECTOR – INDIA COMMERCIAL OPERATIONS, ALLISON TRANSMISSION What has been the highlight for Allison Transmission at the Excon 2015? There are two major highlights. The first being in the Tata booth, the Tata 3138 automatic transmission tipper which has now been completed and is on offer for customers. So that is probably the first 8x4 tipper truck with an automatic transmission available in the Indian market now. There are no fully automatic equipped trucks of that category and it is a leap forward in technology, performance and productivity. The second is a Groove crane which is an all terrain truck mounted crane which is also with an Allison product which is on display at the Groove stall. This sort of marks the beginning of offering fully automatic transmissions in the construction industry. The commercial space is finally showing signs of emerging out of the woods. Does it bode well for your company? It will bode well for our company and the whole industry for sure. What I do see happening this time is a greater sense of efficiency is coming in and a greater sense of equipment productivity is coming in. So whenever the market goes down and starts bouncing back up all the operators and stakeholders start looking at higher efficiencies. It is in this part of efficiency that we play a big role. If you put an automatic transmission in the truck, its efficiency in productivity and reliability takes a massive jump as much as 20pc. If you take a truck with X specifications of engine, axle, etc and if it does ten trips of a duty cycle and you put an automatic transmission in it, then do a good match on the whole truck you can get 20pc better productivity or possibly 12 trips a day. So the bottom line is you start looking at higher productivity by changing a simple

www.motownindia.com

aggregate. As much as I say it is a simple aggregate it is actually a leap forward in technology. That is the kind of change which I expect the resurgence in the industry to bring now.

there been a change in the mood of the business environment? The general economic mood is definitely up beat. This is very prevalent in the discussions at the Excon.

With the Make in India initiative becoming a major essence of Indian manufacturing, is Allison Transmission as a company also determined to promote this initiative and also be an integral part of this movement? We are already an integral part of this movement. We have a plant in Chennai, we not only make in India we also export from India. I think sooner or later every global major is going to look at investing and manufacturing in India. Allison has already done that with a plant in India. India is going to become more and more of a manufacturing centre for the whole world.

What are the new products you are displaying here? No customer buys a transmission they buy a truck. They buy it for the productivity and efficiency and improvement in their operations. So when we say do we have something new to offer we will always talk in terms of what is the new truck or bus which is available for a customer to buy with an automatic transmission. This truck then offers the customer a chance to buy operate and increase his own operational effectiveness, efficiency and productivity. So you can say that if a customer’s product does 10 round trips of a mine and then he buys this truck and starts doing 12 rounds in a

From the previous Excon has

day. Then their top line revenue growth has gone up by 20 pc and their through put to their customers in turn has also gone up by 20pc. So you are adding efficiency and productivity not just the truck but the whole value chain. At the long end of the tunnel everybody benefits down the line. Very briefly can you describe the work done and that has been done by your company to adapt newer technologies and producing more efficient products. We have a lot of R&D which goes on and our mother plant in the US. All R&D takes place over there. We are working on hybrids, tractor transmission and we have a wide range of fully automatic transmissions which starts from the 1000 series all the way to the 9000 series. We have products for the oil field service, the hybrid market, the energy segment, etc. We have recently developed Fuel

COVER REPORT Sense. Traditionally automatic transmissions have been purely hydraulic and mechanical. Over the last ten to fifteen years gradually a lot of electronic controls are coming in. So the transmissions you see today have

COMMERCIAL VEHICLES SPECIAL a lot of electronic controls. In the recent past we developed Fuel Sense which is a very advanced software based controls with which you can yet improve the fuel economy of the whole vehicle substantially. The engine and

transmission they start talking to each other in such a synchronised manner because of the Fuel Sense programs that they start behaving in total tandem with each other. The transmission is able to tell the engine and is also able to pick up

the messages from the engine and can do a lot of things together. So the fuel economy of the drive train improves further. The technology coming in today and the R&D taking place is mostly related to IT, Software and electronic controls.

INTERVIEW WITH RAJIV PODDAR, JT MANAGING DIRECTOR, BKT Your company reported a decline in volumes 26pc and 8pc Year on Year in American and European markets. Do you see a weakness in volumes globally to continue though your Indian volumes have shot up by around 26pc? You have taken a price cut of 5-6pc in the first half of this year. Do you expect to continue to take a price cut and what would be the impact on your margins if as expected the OHT players in Europe raise their prices? This has been a challenging year for markets all over the world and we are no different to that. We will not be able to keep the growth of 27pc but we are working hard. Let us see how far we can get in terms of growth. Everybody will not grow at that rate but we are quite hopeful that we will reach somewhere over last year. If you see the first half year the numbers are good and we look to continue that similar trend in the second half in terms of profitability. The mining sector is not doing well. Are you going to revive your strategy to look more in the construction segment? When you spoke of the 27 R 49 tyre, is this for the overseas market or the Indian market? Our focus is high on construction segment because there is good opportunity there. The mining segment is also in focus. We are also trying to penetrate more by improving our service and outreach to the end user so as to enhance our service to them. The 27 R 49 has a big market globally including India. In the mining sector everyone wants

to cut down cost of production and everyone is looking for high capacity equipment. So larger tyres are going to be launched by BKT and they are meant for the global market including India. Do you plan to enter the automotive market? We don’t have any plans for the short and midterm. We are quite focused on our off highway business and we want to reach our vision of global leadership in the off highway business. At least till we don’t achieve that there is no plan to enter the automotive market. Your Indian volumes grew by 26pc year on year and you also expect a deeper penetration in the OEM and mining segments once the Bhuj plant is fully operational. So is there going to be a shift considering that European and American markets are coming down. Will the focus be more towards the Indian markets going ahead? The Indian market always had a focus but unfortunately earlier we did not have the capacities to

78 | MOTOWN INDIA | DECEMBER 2015

additional capacities the products will be available for the global and Indian markets.

service but now with the Bhuj plant coming up we have the additional capacity and since two years we have been pushing hard in the Indian market on the industrial conception. For just over a year we have also been pushing our agricultural products. It is now that the European and western part of the world is feeling a crunch on supplies. We had already launched our products in the Indian market before that we were only waiting for our capacities to come up. And once we had the capacity we launched it. Now that we have the

What are the different types of tyres you manufacture across your four plants? At Bhuj in Gujarat we are making the entire product range in our basket and in addition to that we are also launching the segments we could not make at other plants which are solid tyre, ultra light giant OTR tyres, all speed radial tyres, etc. We did not have the capacities and capabilities in the earlier plants but in addition to that all the products we are now making will also be available from Bhuj. Which are the global markets in which the demand is going to rise in the future? I hope all markets have a high demand but in the current scenario it is very volatile. Europe is practically as evolved as we see. In America if the weather conditions improve as the last year saw drought and flood so agriculture was poor but we see America as a potential market for demand coming up before Europe. What is the volume you are producing in your facilities? And by when will the Bhuj facility be at full capacity? We are currently producing almost 160 thousand metric tonnes per annum and sales are at around 150,000-153,000 metric tonnes for this year. Our Bhuj facility should be fully operational by 2017 and this will take our complete installed capacity to 280 thousand metric tonnes.

Volvo creates awareness on developing sustainable eco system It has been established that one quarter of the global population is frequently breathing unhealthy air. In May this year, the WHO assessed Delhi to have the most polluted air amongst 1600 cities. As per a recent survey, New Delhi ranked first at 21pc in the list of most polluted cities in India as far as air pollution is concerned. Delhi’s air quality continues to deteriorate, with particulate matter (PM) levels crossing 700 micrograms per cubic metre nearly 12 times the permissible limit. In its ongoing efforts to create awareness on creating sustainable eco system, Volvo cars organised a panel discussion in the Capital to deliberate on the ills of air pollution and make recommendations for sustainable solutions to it. The panel discussion was led by Andreas Andersson, Attribute Leader Environmental Impact, Volvo cars along with Dr. Radha Goyal, Head, Research and Development Division, Indian Pollution Control Association and Dr. Gita Gangadharan, ENT surgeon, Max Super Specialty Hospital. CleanZone is Volvo’s unique approach to controlling interior air quality and providing a better driving environment through innovative solutions for enhanced wellbeing and health. Drivers can breathe easier because most

microscopic, hazardous “fine dust” particles will now be prevented from entering the car. In cars equipped with the new improved multi-filter, the amount of “fine dust” particles smaller than 0,4 μm can be as much as 70pc less than in a car without the filter, according to a standardised component test. This is a significant improvement as studies have shown that dust particles smaller than 10 μm can cause a number of health problems, including difficulty breathing and lung infections. This multi filter has first been introduced in the all new XC 90. It features a larger design that intercepts more particulates and pollen, as well as a layer of active charcoal that effectively removes a host of contaminants that can impact the health of drivers. Tom Von Bonsdroff, Managing Director, Volvo Auto India says “Up to 45 per cent of the industrialised world’s population is now suffering from some form of allergy or hypersensitivity. Over ten per cent has asthma. At Volvo, our commitment to safety goes well beyond safety belts and air bags. It’s about making sure that every minute you and your family spend in a Volvo is as safe as it can possibly be. That includes breathing” Dr. Radha Goyal, Head, Research and Development Division,

Andreas Andersson, Attribute Leader Environmental Impact, Volvo Cars at The Pollution Solution

Indian Pollution Control Association said, “The significant sources of air pollution in Delhi NCR are seems to be vehicular exhausts, construction activities, resuspension of dust and biomass burning. Delhi is also known as India’s asthma capital. As per an estimate, 80 million deaths per year in Delhi are due to air pollution. The specific mitigation measures that can be used are ‘water spraying’ on roads and footpaths particularly in vulnerable areas to dust, artificial grass on public footpaths to avoid resuspension of dust, strict follow of regulations at traffic interactions and heavy traffic roads, thick green belt at the periphery of the city and other vulnerable places and encouraging people to use more and more public transport systems.” Dr. Gita Gangadharan, ENT surgeon, Max Super Specialty Hospital said, “Pollutants damage health is a very well known fact. Air pollutants directly invade the respiratory system, due to easy accessibility, causing myriad symptoms in the nose, throat, larynx and lungs. Further, the lung is a primary point of entry into the body for a number of toxic agents that affect other organ systems. Early assessment is important because removal of the patient from harmful exposure is often the only intervention that Tom Von Bonsdroff, Managing Director, Volvo Auto India & Andreas might prevent further Andersson, Attribute Leader deterioration or lead Environmental Impact, Volvo Cars to improvement in a

patient’s condition.” Andreas Andersson, Attribute Leader Environmental Impact, Volvo Cars, said, “All around the world consumers are becoming increasingly aware of how air quality can impact health, and are now demanding cleaner air inside their vehicles. With this increasing awareness, Volvo Cars has also implemented rigorous test programmes to monitor and control emissions. With its focus on health and well-being, CleanZone represents the spirit of Volvo Cars’ human-centric approach to its work” The filter is one element of Volvo’s state-of-the-art Interior Air Quality System (IAQS). Another element is a sensor that monitors the incoming air for noxious substances. If the level of harmful substances becomes too high (such as when driving through a tunnel), the car’s air intakes will automatically close. Together, the multi-filter and sensor keep out a number of harmful and irritating pollutants, including Nitrogen oxides, Hydrocarbons, Groundlevel ozon, Gases and unpleasant odours While unlocking the car by remote control, the remote cabin ventilation system automatically vents out the interior air within one minute, getting rid of odours and emissions before drivers enter. The work to minimize interior emissions begins long before the cars are even built, with strict controls on the substances that may be used inside the cars.

sell the car built at Pune Plant as the Polo with a 1.6-litre MPI petrol engine with five-speed manual as well as six-speed automatic gearbox. The car will be made available with 105 PS peak power in the South American Market. Dr. Andreas Lauermann, President & Managing Director, Volkswagen India Private Limited, commented: “Volkswagen India builds highest quality cars at its Pune Plant. We have been exporting to numerous markets across the continents of Asia, Africa and North America. By entering Argentina, we not only now continue our endeavour to deliver top notch products around

the world, but also establish ourselves in a new region and a market which has a strong Volkswagen presence.” Volkswagen has been the market leader in Argentina for 12 consecutive years. With a market share of almost 22%, Volkswagen has a strong presence and offers a wide range of products in Argentina. The Volkswagen Vento, which is being exported from India, will be sold as Volkswagen Polo in Argentina and is expected to attract a lot of customers owing to its sedan shape which is a popular segment in the market. Volkswagen India started

exporting cars from its Pune Plant in 2011 with the first export market being South Africa. Since then, the export operations of Volkswagen India have expanded to over 35 countries across four continents of Asia, Africa, North America and South America. The range of cars being exported includes left-hand drive as well as right-hand drive cars. Additionally, Volkswagen India also exports parts and components of its cars to Malaysia which are assembled there for the Malaysian domestic market. Volkswagen Pune Plant has produced over 156,000 cars for export till date.

Continental enhances innovative car-door access and engine-start systems Automotive supplier Continental supplies vehicle manufacturers with a wide-ranging portfolio of secure and reliable solutions for accessing vehicles and starting engines. Continental is heavily involved in the ongoing enhancement and development of innovative car-door access and engine-start systems. Continental supplied the first electronic immobiliser back in 1994 and the first PASE (passive start and entry) keyless start and entry system in 1998. Since then, PASE has been enhanced with significant improvements such as bidirectional wireless communication. Continental currently supplies the fourth PASE generation to vehicle manufacturers. Security and reliability are top priorities for Continental when it comes to locking and identification solutions. This is why only technologies with proven stability and a high level of protection are used for evaluating and developing these kinds of solutions. The engineers focus on anticipating and actively preventing possible attacks. Yet another important aim of these developments is to further increase driver and passenger convenience in the future. A system that is currently being worked on and implemented is one that automatically recognises the driver as he or she approaches the vehicle. The system can then activate the interior and/or exterior lighting, for example, to allow the driver to locate and access the car more easily in the dark. This also means that personalised

features such as seat position, air-conditioning settings, and entertainment preferences can be activated before the driver even enters the car. The Approach Unlock solution can unlock and even open the car door slightly if required as an authorised person approaches the vehicle. The same system can also automatically lock the car after the driver has exited and walked away from the vehicle. When designing and implementing new access solutions, Continental naturally also factors in the smartphone and other on-trend mobile devices such as smart watches. The Gateway Key is an example of just how the automotive supplier is combining convenience and security in these solutions. The vehicle key carried by the driver takes on the role of an intermediary here. It is connected to the vehicle via a secure wireless standard that is suitable for automotive use, which enables it to then receive commands from a smartphone or smart-watch app, for example, using Bluetooth

information such as tire pressure, the amount of gas in the tank, and much more besides. Another possibility in the future may be offered by adaptable keys -that can be used as so-called “leisure keys.” An example of this is the Shadow Key, which turns individual hardware, together with the smartphone, into a key. The smartphone display becomes a means of entry and is loaded via the NFC interface. This is a possibility for both current models and new types of vehicles. The solutions are an example of Continental’s A selection of Continental keys philosophy, which Low Energy (Bluetooth LE, also currently sees Smart known as Bluetooth Smart). Medical gloves for improved ergonomics in production at Audi Gloves too play an important role in ensuring good health among workers, especially those employed in car factories. Audi’s Production division is improving ergonomics as well as health and safety in its factories. Employees at the plants in Ingolstadt, Neckarsulm, Brussels and Győr are currently testing new medical gloves. These so called production orthoses reduce pressure stress with many assembly tasks by more than 50 percent. It is planned to put the special glove into series application this year. The employees in car‑door assembly at Audi install approximately 300 trim strips per shift. This subjects the wrist and the ball of the hand in particular to increased stress. In order to reduce this

stress, Audi has developed a joint‑friendly orthosis together with Spörer AG, an Ingolstadt company that specializes in orthopedic technology. When this special glove is used, the hand is subjected to less strain while retaining its tactile sense and maximum mobility. “With the production orthoses, we are once again demonstrating that ergonomically designed workplaces have top priority at Audi. This helps us to keep our employees healthy and effective, and also enhances the feeling of well‑being in our production areas,” stated Prof. Dr. Hubert Waltl, Board of Management Member for Production at AUDI AG. In developing the glove, Audi cooperated closely with its

production workers. The interdisciplinary development team consisting of plant doctors and occupational safety specialists as well as planning and production staff regularly made use of employee feedback to adjust the glove perfectly to the requirements. The result is a breathable glove made of Teflon. In the area where pressure is exerted, it has a shock‑ absorbent lining that reduces the forces acting on the hand. A highly elastic fastener stabilizes the wrist. At present, 1,000 Audi employees are testing the orthoses at the plants in Ingolstadt, Neckarsulm, Brussels and Győr. The pilot project is part of the

“Workplace of the Future” area of the company’s ergonomic strategy. With “We for us. Active into the future,” Audi is reacting to the large number of challenges brought by the constantly changing world of work. At the end of this year, the production orthoses will be available for all assembly‑line workers at the four Audi plants.

Bosch provides best connectivity in Suzuki vehicles Germany based Bosch Group, a leading global supplier of technology and services, has built a unit that encompasses multi‑media functions, exclusively for Suzuki vehicles. The recently launched Maruti Suzuki Baleno in the country features this Bosch unit. The unit has, apart from other functions, integrated the Smartphone via Mirror Link and Apple CarPlay. It has thus created a connected information system offering a broad range of various infotainment and assistance functions. This Bosch unit is also being introduced by Suzuki in several models worldwide. The new system ensures that passengers in Suzuki vehicles stay in constant contact with the outside world. The 7‑inch colour touch‑screen displays a host of practical and convenient connectivity options in a single device, including smartphone integration via Mirror Link and Apple CarPlay, advanced map navigation and voice control, a hands‑free Bluetooth system, and exceptional music enjoyment via audio‑ streaming or crystal‑clear radio reception

(with digital radio in Europe). “Using the smartphone connection and the easy‑to‑understand menus and symbols on the display, users of the new Suzuki system can stay connected with the outside world anytime and from anywhere,” commented Manfred Baden, President of the Car Multimedia division at Bosch. Thanks to the low‑glare 7‑inch display, voice commands, and steering wheel remote control buttons for volume, telephone, or available sound and storage media, system operation is truly easy and intuitive. Function keys and knobs have been completely eliminated. The many options available in the menus – whether choosing radio stations, selecting music titles, pulling up navigation maps, or addressing telephone lists – can be easily and safely operated on the touch screen by pinching, swiping, or sliding your fingers on the screen. By plugging into the USB slot, the smartphone can be recharged at the same time during the trip.
